This one is mostly for fun, as guessing the next manager is nearly always wrong, but there is some logic in my final answer, so bear with me.
Let’s look at some of those suggested;
Moyes? Ha, no chance. Why on earth would he leave Sociedad when he’s doing not brilliant, but ok?
I can’t say I’ve kept an eye on things there, but am guessing he’s in the middle of a plan, where there’s no way he’d take on a poisoned chalice like the Villa, in my opinion.
Benitez? Interesting, but he’d want a boat load of money, which he has been prone to waste. Even if Fox suggested him, I’d guess Lerner would put the block on him.
Wasn’t he supposedly the manager who laughed at Lerner when he heard what the spending budget was last time? Whatever, no chance again.
Martin O’Neil? After he won an out of court unfair dismissal settlement against Lerner? Just laughable.
Alex McLeish? Stop, my sides are aching!
Back to more reasonable suggestions and we have the likes of Jurgen Klinsmann.
He’s another interesting shout, but again, why would he come?
Southgate? I don’t rate him at all, so I definitely hope not, although I’m sure Lerner would at least entertain an ex player. No, perish the thought.
Laudrup? Young and up and coming, but what has he done in any decent league? Nothing, I’d suggest.
Allardyce? Hmm, Smethwick born and I have a sneaky feeling he might even be a Villa fan at heart, but again, why would he want to move from West Ham to Villa?
That said, he hasn’t got a new contract yet has he???
Decent manager, but his footy is generally poor, hence he wouldn’t be my choice.
Hoddle? Excellent coach, but tainted, so I don’t see it.
I’ve no doubt missed some other choices, but quite frankly it’s a lottery trying to guess.
Lerner will want cheap and we have even less idea what Fox thinks.
The question is what does the club need at the moment?
While a top manager, who can make us win most of our remaining games and keep us midtable next season, while having some masterplan to build us into a European powerhouse is always the aim, the reality is we need someone who can get us out of the dire straights we are in now.
Someone who can have an immediate effect via a boot up the proverbial on a side, even if it’s only short term.
I know it’s not going to be a popular choice, but mine is to pay Tim Sherwood a right good wedge of money purely to keep us up this season. A short term contract, that he can’t refuse, in other words.
I know it seems he has far too many demands, but desperate times need desperate measures.
And for me, there’s no doubt he can fire players up to perform, which is what we need right now.
We can call for any manager you like and indeed they might prove better over the longer term, but our immediate priority is simply to survive this season. Hence I’m suggesting he’s the man.
Unless you can think of someone else who could hit the ground running, faster?

Oohah, you’re beginning to piss me right off.
There is NO way Sherwood will prove worse than Lambert, as we were 100% going down under him.
Shut the fuck up about who we shouldn’t get or what we shouldn’t do and just for once say what you think we should do, whilst being reasonable.
And no, a £500 million investment isn’t reasonable!
Badger you said lamberk would be no worse than mcleish Ffs so what do you know!! Trouble with you is ur standards are low and like most fans ur just happy to stay up. I would like laurrsen, klinsman, Benitez or even Steve Clarke over Sherwood. Lerner has left it too late and this is our only choice and trust me he will hold lerner to ransom. You say he will prove no worse how do u come to that conclusion when he only managed for a few months then got sacked!!?
Laursen? Sorry but he has very little management experience, none in England, does that help?
Klinsmann again is not leaving the USMNT.
Benitez isn’t going to drop Napoli for Villa.
Steve Clarke? Only the most defensive manager you could have. He makes a fine coach but he’s no manager.
Bar Clarke, none of them are realistic.
How about Klopp. And before u slate me beR in mind his stock is at an all time low and wants to manage in prem. Admitting my he would use us as a stepping stone but even so worth a try at least.
He’s never once said he wants to manage in the Prem and his stock is far from being low.
We have been told Villa are looking for a longterm solution… Sherwood is not that solution. If so we might as well stay with Marshall or hire Di Canio, Keane for a quick response out the players and the train wreck that will no doubt occur next season.
I know il get slated for this but as a short term solution I wouldn’t mind mcleish with Sid as ass manager. Safe pair of hands to keep us up then look again summer.
OoHah – I finally get it: you simply want to play Devil’s Advocate in every thread!
Personally I don’t think that Sid, or Kevin Mac, or anyone else who’s had a nice quiet life in the background at VP for years, are up to managing an EPL team these days. Nice guys, and in Sid’s case, a true legend. But as front-man/manager, no chance. There’s a reason why they stayed in the shadows, and it wasn’t always for lack of offers.
As for wanting McLeish back…I could have sworn you were one of those on here who were absolutely desperate to replace him – with Lambert??
Actually I wasn’t as vocal re mcleish as I was lamberk. I actually think mcleish is a better manager but fans turned against him straight as he was from Blues. Agree I suppose Sherwood is only option we’ve got but that’s because lerner left it too late. I think we will def go down now but would of gone under lamberk anyway. Let’s hope Sherwood can get us up next year but don’t hold ur breath
Fuck me ooh ahh ! McCleish would have absolutely no motivation to keep us up. The club that shafted him less than three years ago for doing the job he was paid to do.
Sid as a coach is no better than a Sunday league coach. Just another name with no substance behind him.
Probably right we need a safe pair of hands like a pullis but too late now. Sherwood is high risk sort of guy who would get you a 3.0 win one week but lose you games by big scores the week after.
If ONLY we could see Villa score 3 goals!!!
In ANY competition, against ANY team; ideally at home, but I’ll not be fussy.
I can’t actually remember when we last did that – no doubt Andrew or someone else who likes stats will be able to go back a few years and tell us…
Funny how when those that wanted rid of Lambert where asked “who would replace him” replied with “anybody is better than Lambert” are now unhappy with the prospect of Sherwood.
I wanted Lambert out as much as the next person. We have tossed the coin so now let’s get behind the new manager for the next 13 league games.
Even Robbie Savage you be getting my support if he was offered the job.
We have no got given right to be a premier league team. You have to earn it. And that goes for the fans, players and owner. Let’s go our bit and support our club. We got what majority wanted in getting rid of Lambert. So let’s get us over the line.
Your are 100% right Tekkers.
Agreed. Whoever gets the gig for the next league 13 games needs fans to support the team.
There’ll be plenty of time to shout ‘I told you so’ at the end of the season -whichever way it pans out…
Thank you Dave67. Apologies for the spelling. The alcohol is kicking in !
Well the Express says we are asking about Pulis’ release clause, so I chose to grasp at straws and hope for better options than Sherwood.
This is the same tim sherwood that brought on spurs youth players like harry kane and Ryan Mason his got my backing we need a kick up the backside his the man to do it I bet you were frinsh higher than qpr and wba your see
Oohah,
You’d have McLeish back? (post 11.01pm)
You are truly deluded mate.
He’d probably recall Grealish and play him as goalie!
Let’s remind ourselves of where we are.
We have 3 strikers not scoring.
And have one loaned out, who is scoring for fun, because the team put the ball in the area that matters.
Lambert was the biggest bag of shit manager the Villa have ever had in my 45 years of supporting the Villa, Venglos and McNeil apart. Even DOL escapes this.
Any replacement cannot possibly be worse, even if we go down.
Ok he may not be worse we don’t know but he certainly could be on a par. I said years ago Lamberk was doing no better than Mc’leish and if anything he was slightly worse. Everyone mocked me and said give him time he won’t be any worse when he’s had time etc etc. I will stick my neck out and say long term Sherwood will not be better than Lambert. Over the next ten games maybe as the new manager syndrome kicks in but he will never sustain it imo.
Come on oohah get them splinters out your arse, come down off the fence and tell us who you want as manager.
Iv already said ideally someone like Benitez but no chance of that. Klinnsman, laurrsen, Howe, would be better than sherwood imo.
For what it’s worth my short term choice to keep us up would be Graeme Souness. Oh no not another Scottish Manager ! Lol.
Jeez the players are already at an all time low, they’d be suicidal once Sherwood starts publicly slating them. Back in the Clough days players took it, they were real men and had a desire to play for the club and its fans, not like the whiny pre Madonna ££ grabbing prannys these days!!!
There’s something to be said for natural selection…
If a few of ours decide they’d rather top themselves than get paid a fortune for knocking a ball around under the direction of a loud-mouthed manager, it’ll leave the team stronger.
Haha. That’s true
Agree if a player had a broken leg he would try and play on nowadays a broken fingernail would keep them out for months
Fans wanted lambert look how that turned out fans don’t want sherwood it turn out to be the opposite if he keeps us up his a villa hero
So happy that Lambert’s gone I’ll honestly support anyone who’s given the job.
I’ve said in previous posts that if you threw a pebble into the Holte End and whoever’s head it hit make him (or her) manager in preference to Lambert would be a better outcome.
I’ll honestly accept and support whoever comes and hope they perform the necessary miracle
UTV
I get embarrassed sometimes as a fan when we talk about managers. We slate Lerner for his appointments some before they even start.
although Ellis took O’Neil on. He would not have come if he had not known he was going to get lerners millions to spend. I think houllier cud have done well if allowed to continue. B4 McLeish he tried to get McLaren and was lambasted by the fans many of whom would be happy with mclaren now. Mcleish was just wrong but the majority of fans were happy with lambert.
Most appointments are failures and end with the sack. In my opinion most the time it’s just pot luck.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2952923/Tim-Sherwood-advanced-talks-Aston-Villa-replacing-Paul-Lambert.html
A done deal me thinks.
A lot going around we could buyout Pulis’s contract. Neither I hope happens as there is definitely better, but they’re both alright-ish.
Mate I really believe this Sherwood thing was a done deal before Lambert was sacked. Now this is just my opinion but I read somewhere that Fox and Sherwood were close, so on sacking Lambert don’t you think some sort of conversation had gone on between them?
No way given Fox’s reputation for dotting the i’s and crossing the it’s he’d have not been a man with a plan, no I can’t be having that.
The t’s .
I do agree, and Sherwood was seen at Villa a few times, so this wouldn’t be surprising.
Thinking about it it’s the only option we have unfortunately. Lambert should of have gone before Xmas and we could of had a better choice. Last season saints were in bottom 3 and sacked Atkins bought in a manager that can’t spk english that noones ever heard of and look at them now. Lerner is completely clueless all he wants is 4th from bottom now especially with new deal. Iv given up its the same old bollox and unless lerner sells which he won’t now he’s sitting in a cash cow we will never be a good team ever again. Fact
We’re still hardly a cash cow, but I’d currently take 4th from bottom for this season. Next season is a completely different story, but after how far Lambert’s dragged us into the mud, 4th from bottom is what is needed right now. No matter what though I do expect big chances this summer, even if Lerner is around, Fox said he’s looking for more backroom staff and I’d suspect a fair few to come in. Interesting part is, how Fox is talking Sherwood into this. I mean we have a director of recruitment, and he wants a DOF, although a bit different to your typical DOF, Sherwood has a reputation (in his very short time) of wanting things his way, so how is Fox getting Sherwood to join if he’s not going to get everything his way?
I don’t think he’s the only option, but he’s definitely Fox’s option.
If Sherwood comes in, I’ll be a helluva lot happier than when Paul Toredo Lambert was in charge. I’d consider showing my face at VP if it wasn’t for the fact Lerner is the cause of all this and he ain’t having my sheckles.
OohAhh…very funny mate! Say something controversial and watch the hit ratio go up! Quite comical for you! Advertising revenue going up?
There is one shining light here, and love or loathe him, Fox is a motherfucker. There is no way he will risk his reputation diminishing. He is a serious, serious player. If he sees that we need more investment to increase the attractiveness of the club to any potential buyer, he will petition Lerner, and Lerner will listen.
I’m not sure if Tim is a stop gap or long term, but I’d give my dog a chance after the last three years…and I don’t even have one! Come On Tim!!!…(or whoever we get!).
(P.s. the term ‘motherfucker’ is a compliment in my canon! 🙂 )
Is this the serious player who would of kept lamberk for the next 5 years if the pressure wasn’t overwhelming to get rid of him !
He wouldn’t have stayed. I no longer believe that. Especially if we’d have gone down. Even teams used to yoyoing between divisions rarely keep managers season after season. There are a few exceptions, but the money is that important, clubs pull the trigger. Lambert had one remit – stay out of the bottom three. As soon as we dropped it was plain to see we were in a nosedive.
One thing I don’t understand, if the Telegraph are right, why didn’t Lambery walk if he asked to be sacked? Just the pay off????? The bloke was gambling with his health.
Looking forward to the game tomorrow though…the first for over two bloody years!!!!
Advertising revenue?
If only.
Whatever, just remember what state we’re in.
12 goals in 25 isn’t it?
Bum Bum, I agree, your non-existent dog could hardly be as bad as Lambert was.
badger can we have a vote just to see what the result is 🙂 sherwood y/n i don’t rate him, but i believe he might get a reaction which could save us this season, but i don’t believe hes the man for the future of aston villa.
interesting convo cloughie was arrogant and all that, in your face, but he also got his players to do the talking on the field. i don’t see today’s players rising to this type of motivation.
ali said “some say I talk too much, but anything I say I’m willing to back up” cloughie did this but sherwoods talking the talk at spurs, he had the players, at villa its polar opposite its gonna be harder to walk the walk
Poll added Nath 🙂
nice 🙂 i like democracy in action.
Democracy is an illusion! OohAah rigged the vote!
Bloody hell the bloke hasn’t even been unveiled yet, and some are saying he is shit….. If it is our CEO’s choice to bring Sherwood in lets get behind him… I do not think he is a cheap option as he has large wage demands and wants large transfer funds…
Was speaking to a (recently) ex player, who still works for the clubs old man last night, and it is known Mr Fox is now the man, Lerner is taking a back seat and there are decent funds available for players….. We will soon have 4 football people on our board and the club run by a savvy CEO with lots of sports/football experience… Let him make some decisions and then we can judge…. Things are improving at a steady pace at the club I hope… UTV
WE WILL NOT BE RELEGATED !!
i agree with your sentiments, i am expressing my views, i will be behind whoever is charged with getting us safe. i didn’t approve mcliesh, but for the duration he was manager i was behind him
So where were these decent funds in January. As the general would say total hogwash!
Saddened, I voted short term because I’m not sure, I’ve sat and read all this forums replies and have to say completely baffled me, Im thinking anyone better than Lambert, now Oohah and co are lambasted him before we kick a ball, is he going to be OK or not? so short term to find out. What done me was Helenius post showing that piece on Sherwood saying any club taking him on would be mad? And I agree with badger that was way out of order and a personal go at Sherwood, I’m praying that Villa can get out of this diabolical state of affairs and see if the right choice has been made.
That article isn’t the only one damming him. Look on vv
I’ve just read it could be Sherwood & Hoddle together now that tickles my fancy
makes more sense
Didn’t Sherwood fall out with several players which is part of the reason he left. He is that outspoken it boarders on unprofessional. He has no experience either. Oh well beggars can’t be chooser’s.
There’s some damming comments of Sherwood on vital
I like that combo too!!!! 🙂
I see colymore on talkshite says it would be a mistake to make Sherwood the New manager,I also remember him saying if Lambert becomes our manager he’d be jumping for joy so read what you want into that.
Collymore was saying villa had approached pullis b4 he went to west brom.
he pretends to know things that he doesn’t. Let him put his knob on the block and say who we should get. It’s easy to slag off all the time.
p.s. he was a massive let down when he played for us and the team spirit Brian little had built up disappeared the day he -the primadonna- came in
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31465697
finally the truth ……..will set you free
Fab’s mom for manager???? Might be worth a go 🙂
For short term I think tim will be good for villa, I don’t care if he ruffles feathers with the players or calls fans idiots or the chairman a prick, JUST KEEP US UP! That’s all I care about and hus spuds record shows he could be a short term fix! Just imagine he will stop starting gabby for being lazy and quite frankly crap! And drop the ineffective weimann or at least play him in the correct position! He played 4-4-2 for spuds so who knows maybe us too, whoever gets the job has my backing now as long as he can get 11 players who look like they care a little bit anyway!
just watched Jermaine Jenas on Football focus and he said he thought Sherwood was a good choice.
I doubt he’d say any different really, but one point he did make was that training was really good, fwiw.
Didn’t he also say Villa have some good player’s, but even good teams go down, the like of Newcastle.
He did Bill
I’d be happy with Sherwood.
Problem is, we dont have much of a choice. With sherwood you get enthusiasm and personality, somebody who is going to gee up the players. Something which I cant imagine Lambert ever having done with his dourness.
On another note, I heard Marshall was taking pointers from Lambert for the Leicester game. PLEASE NO!
I bet if there was a poll for when lambert took over it would have 80 – 90% in favour.
Whoever comes in give them a chance. It can not be any worse.
