Villa in for Jonas Olsson to replace Vlaar; Seriously?

So the Mirror are saying we’re going to do the above;

Olsson is 31 and according to Wiki, signed a four year contract in October 2012.
So unless we get incredibly lucky, given our record of over-paying for players, we aren’t going to get him on a free transfer.
Or are we? I’ll leave you to debate that, but I’ll bet he’s on top wages, even if we do get him for nothing.

So what am I getting at?
Well, quite simply I can only see this as another way of Randy Lerner pocketing a couple of million quid.

I don’t have anything against Olsson. He’s a decent, experienced defender, who’s being kept out by Lescott.
But is he on a par with Vlaar?
Or, more in line with what we should be looking for as fans, is he an improvement?
I suspect we’d all agree that he’ll be nothing of the sort.

Of course, it could be that we’re bringing him in purely as backup, given the crocks that we already have.
Which would be fine if that’s all it is.
So why do I suspect that he’ll be expected to go straight into the team?

Hmm, £4-5 million in for Vlaar and Ollson will cost around £1.5 million. It’ll be “undisclosed” of course, as most of our transfers are these days, so we’ll never know the facts.

So that’ll be another few quid in Lerner’s pocket, while he throws us the usual bone of around £5 million to spend in the winter window (which was par for the course years ago, remember).
In the meantime, it depresses me to think some will be praising him for it, because of how “times are hard” etc.
Yes, incredibly hard, if you haven’t received an extra £30 million a season from Sky: which the club has.

Even if this deal doesn’t happen, you can bet your last couple of bob that something like it will, in my opinion.

And still the fans don’t complain.

  1. I see we’re going to have a role call of the victims of the pub bombings at the game.

    Some are saying this is a good resolution to the issue.

    I totally disagree.

    Regardless of mine/anyone’s politics, this was the biggest disaster/loss of life for Birmingham since WW11, as far as I know.

    We have a minute’s silence for all sorts, but to not have one for this particular incident, is scandalous, imo.

    If I’d have known about this in a timely fashion, trust me, I’d have posted complaining strongly.
    Disgraceful and just shows what the club knows about the fans.
    Ie nothing.
    Which is why we are where we are, imo.

    1. Badger am I missing something here. Iv no problem with a minutes silence as pub bombings were horrific. However, I don’t ever remember the club having a mins silence before not even after 10 or 20 yrs etc. Why has this suddenly become an issue as club now all of a sudden!

      1. Nothing to do with not having a minutes silence in the past. More to do with there was an international break so your regular posters haven’t had any reason to spit there dummies out.   5. Anyways, according to the BBC, seems Lambert confirms he’s talked to Vlaar and his agent and the consensus is, his agent has said thanks but no thanks on extending his contract. So do we try to sell him for what we can get, basically because he’s always injured? Or do we keep him until the summer, hoping he comes back as he is still our best defender, when fit, which does seem rare. And do we trust Lambert in finding a replacement for him?

    1. If we can get a fee for him in January sell him……. Then Randy can keep the money as he is a bit short this month…… Then watch Delph go and Cleverley trot off to Everton…Clubs a joke

    1. I had high hopes of Foxy getting the club in better shape….. But realise now his worldwide contacts are probably just being used to find a buyer for Randy… And by the time we are sold we will have no premiership level players left, 30-40% lower attendances and a manager that holds the worst records in our history…….   8. Rats leaving a sinking ship, would be harsh to call them that. Club has no ambition cannot blame anybody that wants out. We need Lambert out ASAP, someone in to try and steady the ship.   15. Burnley seem to have a bit of fight in them and have as many prem quality players as we do – not that many – so why wouldn’t they fancy three points? They also have a manager who appears to be well respected in the dressing room and the wider football community. We will be in the bottom three by the time the kids are taking the first chocolate out of the advent calendar. Going down without a bit of fight.

  16. with our problems at the back, i would move cissokho into a back three, along side clark and okore, hutton returning as right wingback & richardson as the left wingback.this will add more to the attacking threat down the leftside. this might help having more cover at back, plus both cissokho and okore have pace so we can push up further, than of late with sendros or baker who haven’t’ any pace

    burnley will fight and fight, but they will lack goals, granted they will face a weak out of form villa,lacking confidence but with benteke, next so it could be a hat trick of wins for the clarets.

        1. Problem is, is Villa fans can protest Lerner out all they want, he doesn’t have to go, if no one wants to buy. Lambert can be sacked tomorrow and bam, gone, Lerner’s not in this position. He probably wants to leave but he can’t.

          And I do agree, here, other forums, hell just read the Official Aston Villa Football Page, no matter the post, there’s at least 75% of the comments are about Lambert out, anything about Lambert doing interviews, over 90% are about him out and the majority of the last 5-10% is spam. Yet there’s no protests to get Lambert gone.

  25. Lambert slates Switzerland for not being careful with Senderos injury and yet at West Ham he played Baker who got injured early on for most of the game when he should have been taken off and is now out for 2 months.
    Lambert does not have a clue.
