No doubt we’ve seen the story where Tim Sherwood’s job is on the line and he has two games where he has to win one of them.
It seems a very plausible story, given our very poor start, but I’m not convinced I agree with it when it comes to the secondary part which discusses who will replace him.
For me, the problem is would these managers actually want to come to the Villa?
I’d like to see Rodgers, as he tries to play the game the right way, but is he proven during a relegation struggle?
Moyes is a good shout and I’ve long felt he’s destined for the Villa, but I just get the feeling that even if he wants to come back, his thinking will be that there will be better propositions sometime in the season.
And surely these sorts of managers will want big assurances and big money to spend?
Can we really see that happening under Lerner?
I personally doubt it, as the whole club seems to be playing these “moneyball” tactics, when you consider what our net spend has been this season so far.
It’s a pretty basic fact that if you spend nothing you’re going to struggle and it’s the under-investment that’s gone on far too long that is causing our problems, in my opinion.
Let’s not forget we were pretty happy with our signings, but they needed to be able to have been dripped in amongst more proven (read expensive) players, which is where Sherwood does have a point.
That said, I’m happy to concede that Sherwood has made some costly errors with his tactics and substitutions; but I still wonder what any new manager would do to change our direction and instil a new winning mentality, something that Sherwood seems to have lost already.
Putting it simply, the story is probably not far off the mark, in my opinion.
But I don’t expect a decent, proven Prem manager to come in.
Rodgers for one is against a football committee, which seems to be the way we’re operating now, isn’t he?
As is Moyes, I believe.
No, I’d be keeping an eye more on foreign coaches, who will look at the Prem riches by European standards as a way of bringing players in.
And it’ll be the same old way of thinking, in that most of them won’t be ready for the way we play footy.
Face it, Lerner, you need to spend and spend big time, if you want to get us out of this one, as relying on stats is a joke.
After all, I’ve just seen the headline where Villa and Newcastle defenders are top of the stat tables in one area.
And we all know where both clubs are currently at.
Perhaps more importantly though, is, if the stories that Sherwood didn’t approve of the moneyball approach were leaked by him (which seems very likely, when you read about how he apparently undermined Villas-Boas by leaking to the press), I suspect it’s this alone that will lead to his demise more than anything else.
You might be able to stab a manager in the back, but it won’t work against the owner and his Chief executive.
Although it does at least raise the issue and perhaps Sherwood already knows his days are numbered?
I mean, would anyone want to highlight the problem, if he thought his job was safe?

Moyes more or less has a footballing committee, he doesn’t make the decisions over there and would he leave Spain for us? Of course not. I don’t get why people even bring his name up. Of course the rumours of Rodgers is around, and his style is one that he doesn’t change and might be more suitable to us, but I truly hope we go foreign for once. Honestly would look into Lucien Favre, was a huge reason for Monchengladbach’s revival in Germany. From relegation struggles to CL football. He did have a poor start for them this season, then resigned but lasted 4 years and did incredibly well. Think he’d be a great choice.
He would be a safe pair of hands I guess. Problem is we could get Guadiola as manager and we’d still only finish bottom 8 as that’s all Lerner wants. Sick of supporting this regime
We’d get top 6 with Guardiola. We have a good side, plagued by poor management. Ridiculously poor management at that. Who continues to play the same crap players and not even start the new ones brought in, or our actual good ones.
Top 6 with Guardiola? We do not have a good side, mid table quality at best. Not even Pep could get them playing decent football
But after 8 or 10 games if we are still in the bottom three and not any better, then everyone will say he has to go, after all sherwood was the new messiah last season, now look.
i am not saying sherwood should stay or go, its just that keep changing managers is just not going to bring you success, villa need to find a manager they believe in and come relegation or poor football and results for a season or two you need to stick with him, but the fans will never put up with that and because of the money in the premiership now lerner wont put up with it either.
Whats the answer? to be honest i don’t think there is one, so just get used to annual relegation battles every season, until we finally go down and end up like blackburn or forest or leeds.
Sherwood should never have been taken on in the first place except as an interim manager at best. How does someone with a few months experience with a better squad than ours get a job as manager of a great club like outs in the first place. It’s a complete joke
We all fell for the five card trick by getting rid of Lambert, we at the time we was so desperate when Sherwood’s name came into the play, yes please, now we are back where we started. Fox the savours called for him, and questions should be asked what have you done Fox. To be honest I’ve no idea who the hell can put a Villa shirt on and say I’m the man. They all are after an easy life and money, to me at the minute thinks we are down and out! A foreign manager with good reference should come in at least they would be looking for English honors. How many more people are taking us for a ride?
I will be very surprised if Sherwood lasts the season. Not just because of results but as a result of the two stories recently appearing the press over transfers. Now TS may be right but going public just isn’t going to work.
Rodgers actually has a good track record in the Prem and is the main reason Swansea are in such a strong position. Was never supported by the Liverpool fans who reckon they’re ‘bigger’ than Rogers. I reckon he will appeal to Fox and he won’t let this poor run of results carry on for much longer – learnt his lesson last season.
FWIW I think missing out on Cambassio was a massive mistake – I would also have taken Townsend but Lennon – do me a favour!
Rodgers is another Lambert. Can’t organise a defence to save his life and we havnt got quality strikers like Suarez that will out score opposition. Expect Joe Allen and lovren as jan signings.
Lets be honest, we all knew Sherwood was an unknown quantity. In fairness to him, he managed to get enough out of the players last year to keep us up, so bringing him in hasnt been a complete disaster. Sadly, I just think he is out of his depth in the PL. His recent comments have been farcical and hard to defend even for Villa fans.
If the rumours are true that we must win against either Chelsea or Swansea, then we better be lining a replacement up already. Rogers would be my first choice, but there are other outs there. I’m glad Allardyce has gone to Sunderland though.
The problem with Rodgers is that he struggles to organise a defence and loves playing players out of position……..i thought we’d had enough of that. I also think he’s a tit.
That said, Sherwood can’t continue.

Rodgers isn’t the answer, although he’d be a decent shout and about as good as we could expect.
My problem is I don’t think there is an answer when it comes to managers.
They’re all doomed to fail, whoever you care to name, imo.
And it won’t change until something at the very top does.
Lambert said as much as he could dare, in saying the club’s policy was wrong and I very much suspect (if this story is anywhere near true) that Sherwood is doing the same.
While Lerner is in charge, we’re in perpetual trouble.
It’s as simple as that, for me.
Spot on badger Rodgers is about the same as Lamberk but would just about keep us up. We could get pep Guadiola and I still think we would struggle to finish mid table. The problem us the way the club is run Lerner us rotten to the core and like I keep saying until he sells we will always be a bottom 6 team

I also think Rodgers is a bit of a tit but he is a half decent Prem manager. I like Sherwood but he has bitten off more than he can chew, we have not played well since the FA Cup semi final.
Sherwood has to go and i dont believe i am being irrational. We sold two players who were apparently our best players but in fairness both spent a lot of time out injured, Sherwood has signed a lot of players and they look the part but they dont seem to know what they are doing.
Nothing he could do re Benteje and Delph as both had escape clauses
Rodgers would be okay as long as he isnt allowed to sign anyone from Southampton…and given our transfer budget, that shouldnt be an issue!
The Club is a shambles, Harry Houdini could not get us out of this mess, yet another manager who we hang out to dry, because our owner is a spineless hello belly.

I still can’t believe why nothing has happened yet, 2 games to save his job, we already know the results – a complete demolition job vs Chelsea where their defence suddenly looks tighter than a you know what, and a shambolic mistake vs Swansea leaving us with 0 points from 2 games – all wrapped up in head scratching tactics, shabby up front, Lescott at the back and a few useless floated corners from Westdud.

Sherword kept us up and we’re all grateful for that. Nice cup run then the wheels came off in the final. But from the games just before the final, where we got walloped by Swansea and beaten at home by Burnley, who were all ready demoted, the warning signs were there. Sherwood stuck to the line up of those last 2 sad league games for his choice of players for the FA Cup final and we were a joke in that. Why he couldnt bring Gil in for those last games, heaven only knows.
Sherwood started off as a good motivator. We all loved the deserved win over Spurs. He even squeezed the last drop of footballer out of characters like Nzogbia and made Cleverly looked classy by the time he left. However, it’d started to dry up, before the end of last season, and who could sit through watching our FA Cup final again?
He’s now at a stage where he doesnt have confidence in his own grand plan. Against Stoke he didnt field the more creative combo of Gil & Grealish until they came on as subs in the second half. Perhaps with good reason he’s reluctant to give Traore more than 30 minutes. We should have been on the front foot against Stoke, right from the beginning, its Villa Park for Christ sake.
These days I struggle with his line up, and nearly always scratch my head over his substitutions. Yes, he has to get a result with at least one of the next two games. He’s made it hard upon himself.
Moyes?! Haven’t we learned our lesson with Scottish managers?! Our Head of Recruitment or whoever is responsible for signing players clearly hasn’t got a clue! And Sherwood clearly hasn’t got a clue who his best players are or what his football philosophy is. Overall, Villa is a club in a complete mess. I’d also like to point out that our style of play is very much in the mould of Ray Wilkins – pass it backwards!
