John Terry signs, Official

So footy’s worst kept secret has happened then and we welcome John Terry to the Villa squad.
Tony Xia has been up to his usual tricks and posted it on Twitter, which I’m not convinced is the best way to go about it, but it does seem to be popular with the fans, so I’m not complaining.

It’s an interesting signing, if not mostly because if the rumoured £4-5 million (including promotion bonuses) is true, we’ve shattered our wage structure, in going from a previous cap of around £56k a week to nearer £100k.
That’s massive money for any player, let alone a Championship player, although it could easily be said that Terry is still easily good enough for the Premier league.

I feel quite good about this signing, as it’s a massive coup, when you consider the likes of Swansea, Bournemouth and I believe WBA were interested in him too.

But his signing is also quite a big gamble, in my opinion.
His leadership and authority in the game are beyond question and I’m sure he’ll offer both to the team/squad, but my bigger concern is more about his actual ability to play.
Will he be able to cope with the rigours of Championship football?
Steve Bruce must think he’s up to it (or maybe he plans to use him selectively?) and it seems the player has been keeping himself fit, having undergone fitness sessions even while he was on holiday. You can’t say he isn’t committed to looking after himself, but will that committment carry over to Aston Villa?
You have to think or at least hope that it will and Terry certainly seems to be the type that puts everything into his job.

The player is questionable in other areas outside of football, but I’m going to concentrate more on what he can actually bring to us, which is a fair amount.
Hence I look forward to him leading us on a charge, which will ultimately see us get promoted.
If that happens he’ll have been worth every penny and I won’t begrudge him any of it.
But if it goes boobs up, it’ll just be the latest in a long list of desperately poor signings on big money.

One little thing that’s been bugging me in this saga.
What’s that rubbish about, where apparently the player didn’t want to have to face Chelsea?
Surely he could have just had a clause put in his contract, where he didn’t play against them?
Oh well, no matter.

In short, welcome, John Terry!

Yeah but Keane proved he can’t manage, he was so god awful at Sunderland and he’s useless for Ireland. Incredibly different. Keane tries to bully people and can’t handle anyone who won’t take it, Terry doesn’t seem like a bully.

But he was an assistant manager. Which is what he is for Ireland. He again tried bullying players that wouldn’t take it. No one respects Keane, and for good reason. Most United fans don’t understand why he can’t keep his mouth closed, and they’re in love with the guy. Keane is far and away different to most, because he’s an idiot who thinks he knows everything and will try to beat it into you, and when someone stands up to him, he gets scared.

Hard to destroy teams when your team plays such negative, defensive football. You’re right he has so much talent but you need to build the team around him, and that includes, quick passing, attacking football, something Bruce has never and will never play.

Just cant post without adding negative shit, can you?

    1. Its not our money, its the owners and he can spend it any way he sees fit! Which part of that can’t you grasp? Moreover, where can we spend £4 and get a guaranteed world class defender with the leadership qualities we have needed for such a long time? Nowhere is the answer to that! For £4 mil, you will, at best, get potential…..we’ve been that road too many times in recent years. Yes, he’s 36, but he is extremely fit! And yes, he didn’t play too often for Chelsea last season. FFS, think outside the box as that is a ‘positive’ for us (the definition of positive is readily available, just buy a dictionary or google it)! He will be fit, relatively fresh and raring to go!….all very negative indeed!

    2. He plays out from the back so expect the end of ‘hoofball’. Both JT and Chester are very comfortable on the ball and are very decent passers…a must for all decent defenders in this day and age. Moreover, it will help our more ‘skilful and forward thinking midfielders’ more time on the ball and allow them to express their attacking attributes better! Expect far more goals from midfield this season! Get a decent keeper in and we will have the best Championship team, no doubt!

    3. Your point about not wanting to play against Chelse is both pointless AND irrelevant. Its pointless, because he plays for us and therefore irrelevant as well! I’m sure your point of having ‘a clause in his contract’ to not play against Chelsea would have gone down really well at Bournemouth, Swansea, and Albion who may have needed a point or 3 to stay up,, qualify for Europe or progress in a cup….just another laughable attempt to find something negative to say about our club…..some of you deserved Lerner, he did, after all give you lots of negative ammunition….boy, how you must have loved his reign! Sorry, you cant break my positive outlook….negativity is NOT for me, I just cannot live my life like that!

Welcome Dr T, welcome Steve Bruce and welcome JT …..dont let the ‘negative haters’ get you down!

We now have a great owner, a very good championship manager and a real leader of men on the pitch……it is, indeed, a very negative time to be a Villan!

Langford – love your positive outlook and your contributions on here were one of the main reasons I opted for this blog. I’m sure Badger can defend himself but to be fair I suppose he has to post a view that reflects a spectrum of Villa support which as you so rightly say includes a lot of fans with negative views. Overall I thought Badgers post was reasonably well balanced and asked some fair questions.

What I detest is the repeat negativity just for the sake of being negative – in other words there are those who will be negative whatever we do or achieve as a club. Unfortunately we seem to live in a society that breeds off negativity but then I’ve been accused of being a ‘happy clapper’ on here so, on that basis, I obviously no sh*t about anything.

Initially I was concerned about JT coming but more about us giving him too long and too expensive a contract. A one year contract is a good strategic move and the bonus for promotion seems a very sensible arrangement. Fwiw, I think he will be a huge success both on and off the field.

Just to add to your post, we also now have a shrewd and experienced football man in Wyness and I think Luke Organ will also prove to be an excellent addition as marketing (commercial?) director – he certainly has an impressive CV.

All in all the massive and good ship Villa is finally turning around.

With respect H60 ‘a balanced debate’ would likely include some of the positive points I posted! You said ‘what I detest is repeat negativity just for the sake of being negative’….exactly what this post is! The owner shows ambition, puts his money where his mouth is! The player signs because he wants to win, rather than just taking ‘easy money’, showing ambition! The board have clearly worked extremely hard to get this over the line, showing ambition! We beat several clubs to capture his signature, again showing ambition…..no mention of these points whatsoever!

Fair enough mate and I am now very much in the positive camp over JT’s signing. I think it’s a real coup and whilst I understand concerns arising from previous experiences with signing players at the latter end of their careers I truly believe this will be different.

if JT wanted a fat payday he (apparently) had a number of more lucrative ‘showboating’ type offers. No he’s a winner and he will not accept second best either from himself or from his team mates – unlike some that have come to Villa for a lot more money given the length of contracts offered! Apart from the football he will definitely bring in revenue on the commercial side.

Well done to Bruce, Steve Round (who probably won’t get the credit he deserves in this deal), Wyness and Dr.T. for backing the manager.

Other than Okore, what center back have we signed that was for potential? Do we need to run down the list of recent center backs? Richards and Lescott, the two center backs at fault for our relegation? Or how about Senderos, he was a huge hit, wasn’t he? We’ve hardly gone for potential in recent seasons. Bar Lambert’s very first season at the club, for the last decade we’ve been an experienced/well past it home grown signing club. We need to go the potential way.

I’ll give you that on Terry. He does like to pass it into midfield instead of hoof the ball. But that’s down to Bruce, and what he wants, which is usually hoofball.

Except, he didn’t want to play against Chelsea, or he’d have signed for a Premier League side. It’s not negative, it’s incredibly simple to understand.

Well no duh Oohah, did you really think his goal in life after retirement was to manage us? Of course it’s to manage the team he played for his entire career. We’re a stepping stone for most, very, very few managers ever stick it out for 1 club, or 2 clubs their entire career. And let’s not forget, players/managers often use other clubs to be a stepping stone to our size club, before making the biggest jump of their career to a United or City.

Increase in merchandising, ticket sales and Sky will be all over us (is that good or bad?) and at ast we seem to have learned how to strategically structure the contract so that we are not over committed.

I am very pleased at this signing. Though I think it will take him some time to regain match sharpness, and I doubt he is good for 180 minutes per week. Still he has flogged his house in Oxshott already, netting £10m in profit, so he should be able to afford a decent pad in the midlands, none of this commuting stuff which rings alarm bells.
I suspect Terry’s presence will bump us up the queue for a Chelsea loanee or two, which can’t be bad.

The Terry signing will either prove to be an inspired move or backfire. I have no idea how this will play out. Hopefully it will improve leadership on the pitch if nothing else. I’m not concerned about the cost. If Xia is happy to pay it fair enough. If Terry is fit and not past it I would prefer to pay him that amount rather than Gabby.

I hadn’t heard the Walters rumours but would love that signing. Great attitude and decent forward of a type we don’t have. I thought we should have gone for him last season.

I still don’t see where the game changing improvement will come from last year to next season. Bruce is simply the wrong manager, but he is here. The fact that even his supporters are talking about 10 to 12 games next season tells me they aren’t convinced either. For anyone who says we can play crap football and get promoted you’re deluded. The only way to do that is to fluke it through the play offs. We should be walking this league, just like Newcastle and Brighton did last season – not by playing crap football in case anyone didn’t notice.

DS…some good points you make IMO. Good balance to your argument too. None us know how will turn out……but thats the same for any player. Can you recall how good Sasa Curcic was for Bolton and yet so poor for us? But, we have to give JT a chance, dont we? And I do think the standard of football will improve with two ‘comfortable on the ball’ CBs, I said as much above! Our midfielders (talented for the championship) IMO will gain strength and confidence with the arrival of JT paired with Chester! I am convinced our GD will be greatly improved next season! Completely agree with you about Gabby too…..JT has got to better ‘value for money’ IMO again. Also agree on Walters, good forward and another with a great attitude and winning mentality! But that would propably mean selling a forward….who do you suggest, and you cant say ‘Gabby’ lol 🙂

I remember being deeply disappointed with Curcic. Yes we give JT a chance. He has had some class players next to him at Chelsea. This is different but I would still hope that he can have an impact. Chester is class IMHO. I wouldn’t let Gabby anywhere near the first team. Stick him in the canteen and then we can all be happy, especially him.

20 games next season for Bruce? OK but if we are 10 points adrift (and I am worried that we will be that far back after 10 games) then we are stuffed again.

I really hope he proves me wrong but I look at the fixtures we start with and I can see as many defeats as victories. I’m not negative (normally). I’m just calling it as I see it. I think we have one of the best squads in the division already, if not the best. I don’t know the answer to the management question, and I freely admit that. I have nothing against Bruce personally and actually admire his honesty. I just wish we had better.

      i cant wait lang 🙂

i agree about goalie. i recall this garbage all started with me saying villa will win the league, i am just waiting to see who we buy as goalkeeper.before i place my wager on um.

then i was answering questions, the 12 games or 10 was to response from badger asking how long will bruce get if we dont get off to a flier. i recall answering i don’t know how long he will get. i agreed a bad start won’t be tolerated by the owner. guessing it will be under 10. but i also posted 100 more saying villa would be top or worst second. depends how bro cope with relegation

Yep, 10 games to drag us away from another relegation scrap and 10 ganmes to try and gel a team with several new players!

And the last remaining 15 games were for what Langford? Losing? Drawing? Proving he was reliant on a big man striker to fit his overly defensive, awful tactics?

He he, keep it up Oohah your sure to upset someone, Joe Hart I cannot forget the cockups he’s made in the past, don’t think at the minute there’s a decent goalkeeper on the cards, my main want is a midfielder that sprays the ball about, a winger to cross balls, still I reckon Bruce will change his tactic on the off and go all out to frighten the opposition’s.

It shows how crap Hart is that Pep is happy for him to go to UTD. That says it all. How could we afford £20m anyway and he’s on £125k a week ffs.

Just it, no one is even coming close to offering that. Premier League sides are going for other keepers. Hell, Everton spent more on a 1 season wonder so far in Pickford, who got relegated nonetheless. He cost Torino a Europa League spot, because he’s crap. And while maybe good enough for us, because he’s English, he’s being vastly overrated on here.

I am going to take issue with Oohah, as per.. Firstly JT is a free transfer so has not impacted our transfer budget. His salary is a current account cost.

Secondly Joe Hart may not be good enough for our CL teams but he is a better keeper than any currently in the Championship – and that is what counts. For that matter – Citeh won nothing and slipped down the table following their change of keeper, so I see no evidence they made the right call.

Finally a pun for our resident Jeremiah “A marquee signing shows intent. Two marquee signings shows intense commitment to a promotion drive.”

And he cost Torino a Europa League spot with at least 10 errors. He’s not good enough for a CL spot and clearly top flight teams aren’t in any hurry to rescue him from City. Leicester want Kalinic, Everton signed Pickford, not even the likes of Stoke or West Ham are ponying up for him, which says a lot.

OLL…..completely agree with your post. Joe Hart would be an amazing coup for us. Easily good enough for the PL, let alone the championship. Ooha hasn’t got a clue mate. BTW, dont underestimate the part that JT can play in encouraging decent players to join us….yet another positive that didnt make the post

Savo’s post is at least borderline too, fwiw, but I’m trying to imagine it said in a pub setting, where the other person could rebutt it.

Calling someone “a negative p***k” is a different level.

How can we possibly afford him Langford. We’ve only got a million or so to spend and we’ve spent 4 x that amount already just on Terry’s wages. City want around £15-20m for him and he’s in about £125k plus a week. A loan deal is possible but remember in World Cup year he’d want to play in the premier. Ruddy is no worse than Hart same age and as cheap as chips so why would we waste all that money on Hart. We would need to raise around £25-30m in sales to finance hart and Terry to satisfy ffp or we will be docked points

        Andrew July 5, 2017 at 4:38 am . Reply

You’re reading way too much into that 1 million or so to spend article from HITC, they’re far more wrong than right on anything. We’ll have a bit more than that to spend.

You gotta remember, Hart has no competition, at all, for England. Maybe bar Pickford. But he needs to play, and he has no offers. No Premier League side wants him, or an Everton would’ve signed him. West Ham would’ve already made an offer. Any number of teams would’ve tried already, because he’s been readily available for over a year.

Ruddy is awful, he’s not even at an average at best Hart. Ruddy shouldn’t be thought of.

Hart is average, he’s arguably a lower Premier League keeper, which would equate to being the best in the Championship Ruddy isn’t an above average Championship keeper. He’s mediocre. Doesn’t even reach the average at best because he’s not good.

IV nothing against Hart coming but surely we can get someone just as good for half the money. I do agree with Badger though I’d rather have him than Johnstone. We are 4/7 to sign Johnstone so looks like Hart won’t come anyway

    Morning all,
    Whelan latest

Steve Bruce is optimistic Glenn Whelan will be Aston Villa’s next signing following John Terry’s arrival.

But Villa still have plenty of work to do to strike a deal with Stoke City for the midfielder.

An offer believed to be in the region of £500,000 was rejected last month by the Potters who are understood to want twice that amount.

Bruce believes the 33-year-old Irish international will add the “steel, determination and aggression” Villa have been lacking. I see we are still in pole position with Johnson man utd have not yet sorted out their problem on goalkeeper, that might resolve this week.
