Shay Given is set to join Liverpool on loan, reports BBC’s Ben Smith:
“Liverpool are increasingly hopeful of adding winger Victor Moses on a season-loan long as talks with Chelsea continue. A deal to take goalkeeper Shay Given on loan from Aston Villa is, however, likely to go to the wire on deadline day.”
Aston Villa have tried to ship out a host of players and haven’t had much success, but it appears as though Given, Aston Villa’s oldest player is set to leave the club on a season-long loan. Given is earning massive wages at Aston Villa and I’m not sure whether or not Liverpool will pay all of it. Liverpool is looking for a keeper to play as understudy for Mignolet. This is to insure that Mignolet will be under a little bit of pressure.
I would’ve liked to see Given move to a club permanently, but wages have been the usual stumbling block.
There’s no chance Pool are going to pay the rumoured £56k a week that Given is on.
I can’t even see them wanting to pay half of that for a backup keeper!
Which means we’ll be paying a large wedge.
It doesn’t make sense to me.
If we’re not going to use these players (and it’s plainly obvious we’re not), just do a deal and pay them off. Obviously not at what it would cost to pay off the contract, but surely at a price where we save some money. The players would then be able do sign for another club for less wages, so they don’t lose out, but get regular footy.
I mean, we’re going to lose a fortune on them anyway, imo.
I think Aston Villa were waiting for a desperate club that would be willing to take them off our hands.
Loan moves are the best we can get.
