POLL; Simple question; Bruce, yes or no?

bruce

Ok, I’ve stuck my neck on the block and said that I believe Steve Bruce is the man that we should appoint as our next manager.
But I’ve also seen some disagree vehemently, which is of course, fair enough.

We can go into the ins and outs of what he’s done in the game, but what it all boils down to, is can we swallow another ex Blues manager managing our club?

Yes, you can cite reasons why we might go with someone else, but I’m more interested in the specific question, as in the headline, because I believe it’s important in that the fans’ views might swing opinion.

Please base your vote on the assumption that he’s the only option we have and whether you’d give him a fair chance, as opposed to turning on him and calling him a Bluenose as soon as we lost a game or two.

  1. Just off topic Rooney already up Southgates arse I wonder why he thinks so highly of him it wouldn’t have anything to do with the captains armband & still be selected.your days are numbered knobhead.

    1. Got a feeling it’ll be some time before Fat Sam is in the dugout for anyone…

  2. Don’t underestimate Round’s position. It is still a big unknown as to how the club will move forward or how the club will conduct itself. Considering how Sherwood had such a tantrum about recruitment panels, how would a Big Sam or Bruce (safe experienced option or not) handle not having the final word on Villa’s future purchases? Probably not well.

    1. Good point Marvin.
Round will have a big shout and he might indeed want one of the new breed.

But I suspect he’ll be out-voted and have to swallow it.
Xia’s the decider and we shouldn’t make any bones about it, imo.
Which means it’s going to be a proven type, who’s been there and promoted clubs to the Prem.

And there is no better candidate than Bruce, who has done it 4 times, simple as.

The Birmingham Mail poll shows a majority, but I wouldn’t trust that as far as I could throw it. You only have to look at how the noses troll the replies on any Villa subject, in their sad way, to see why.

Meanwhile, the poll on here, fwiw, shows a 2-1 majority in favour.
How that compares to any other genuine Villa sites, I really don’t know, as I haven’t looked. But I suspect it might be similar.

In which case, I’m not sure why we’re messing about, but guess it’s about making it look like we’re doing due diligence.

If I was a betting man, I’d put a grand on Bruce being the man, because no-one else comes anywhere near if you look at this logically.

      Get it done Tony.

      1. Or to put another way Badger – One third of Villa fans who responded don’t want Bruce. A few bad results and that proportion would increase significantly.

The Blues connection doesn’t worry me, but it will worry plenty of others. i think he would do a job, but I do have concerns about his ability to take us to the level we want to be at. That said, we need to turn things around quickly, and an untried manage would be a massive risk.

I don’t know how many people remember the 2004 Euros in Portugal when England lost to France 2-1 with Zidane scoring twice in the last few minutes. Emile Heskey came on near the end and conceded a free kick that Zidane scored from. After the match everyone was slagging Heskey off, and suddenly Bruce appeared alongside us saying he thought Heskey did well. Then he bought him for Blues. Just saying!

        1. DS – doesn’t matter who we appoint about one third of fans will be against it and again, if they start losing then their position will fast become untenable. Actually 66% support is pretty conclusive.

Why hasn’t the Doc acted – perhaps the England situation means that Bruce is not prepared to commit – in that case we should be interviewing other potential candidates …… but not Cotterill or Jones thank you.

          1. True. Not saying we shouldn’t appoint him by the way. You could be right about the England job as he seemed close to it before. I just don’t see him as a long term manager for the club, but not many managers are long term.

It’s not an inspiring choice, but it may be what we need right now.

          2. Agreed mate but we do need a period of stability and Bruce seems the best option to bring that. Wagner might be an exciting choice but I think that’s too early for both parties

  3. Nathan Jones??? Come on just because Luton knocked us out of the league cup that’s the only reason for this link.I see Cardiff moved sharpish take note tony

  4. The media has use linked to every Tom, Dick and Harry. I would like the new manager in before the weekend, if not I can see Clarke taking control, I hope not.

It Doesn’t matter if Bruce was employed by the bluenose, any manager that loses a few games will be under pressure. The majority of fans will except Bruce they know what he can bring to this league.

  5. Sir rons still a villa legend he went to the scum or is it only when the manager comes in the other way???That’s selective criticism in my book

  6. See our mate Tim Sherwood is gaining traction in the race to become the next holder of the ‘poisoned chalice’. Some people never learn 🙂

    1. At least with RDM we managed to draw games,I believe aswell as Dr x believes re past tweets you never make the same mistakes twice .I’d say this one is pure speculative & a non starter

    2. I’d rather have Sherwood than Bruce. Sherwood was never given a chance and nobody could do well under the last regime. New players new owner I think he could flourish. He would 100% go for the kill too should we go 1-0 up. None of this sit back on the lead rubbish. He is a motivator and gets involved during games I personally like that trait.

      1. I have sympathy with that Nath, but think he would struggle with solving our excess of forwards/imbalance in midfield issue. Whoever comes has to solve that one and motivate the team. It’s a really tough task.

      2. Oh behave Sherwood was the reason we’re in this mess in the first place. Remember when we lost 6.1 to saints under him and that cup performance v Arsenal was humiliating he was clueless

        1. No he isn’t at all. Your just using him as a scapegoat. We have terrible results every season no matter what manager you can’t single out two results means nothing.

    3. Why sack him, pay him a load of compo and then reemploy him 12 months later? If we’re going down that line how about Remi Garde for his assistant? Lambert under 21’s? Mcleish s**t house cleaner?
The return of Tiny Tim? Somehow I think not.

  7. in May (before the play offs) it was between Bruce and Pearson for the job and that Bruce was definitely leaving Hull. I posted this at the time. The people making the decisions then were Hollis, Bernstein and King.
Xia and Wynesss came in went for DiMateo.
I am pretty sure Bruce wants the job and I would go for him.
But if Villa go for him is this an admission from Wyness (say) that he was wrong the last time round. Is he prepared to admit that he was wrong.
Wyness (say) ego could be the reason Bruce does not get the job.

      1. Xia’s way or the highway. I’m sure he listens to others and then makes up his own mind.

    1. Take Bruce but only for a year. If he takes us up we Def don’t want him managing us next season

  8. Giddy, I’ve just read in the Mirror that we’re going to interview Bruce this week and he wants to bring Keith Bertschin in with him.

    1. Keith Bertschin, that’s a blast from the past. The Noses pin up boy of the 70’s.
(He had lovely hair you know)

      1. He was only a legend for the scum because if that header he scored against us at VP. Did nothing before that it since typical!

    2. No way he’s a bluenose what’s he ever done in terms of management and coaching. Il never forgive him for that header he scored against us!!

  9. Is it just me or does Villa park seem like a graveyard for aspiring managers? Lambert was the biggest thing since sliced bread not really worked other than a short spell at Blackburn.
Garde Highly rated young coach, not presently employed.
Sherwood the next big thing?? Ain’t worked since.
Mcleish rated for what he achieved at the sty now managing Egyptian Premier League club Zamalek.
Gary McAllister what happened to him?
Who’d want the job? It’s the death knell for managerial careers.

    1. Even MON struggled. He went to Sunderland and was found out for the overrated manager he’s always been and jumped before pushed. He’s doing ok at ROI but international football is easier imo

      1. Curse of the poisoned chalice; graveyard of managers. There must be a book in there somewhere

  10. Brum mail saying interviews starting next week ffs take advantage of the international break,I can see Clarke being in charge for the wolves clash with our manager in the stands.

    1. We all know it’s Bruce and he wants to come so what exactly are they waiting for

    1. Bill he’s still favourite mate I think we’re narrowing down the shortlist, the way it’s looking it’ll be a very small shortlist

  11. According to the BBC there are 10 short listed candidates but they only name 5 (including Wagner who has allegedly ruled himself out) and then proceed to name more than that, that are not in the list! You couldn’t make this cr*p up!

So 5 anonymous – are you one of those Bill?

    1. Should have added the most interesting name on the (claimed list) is Sean Dyche – for me over Bruce but why would he be interested?

  12. Yes mate, fed up with all this speculation thought I’d throw my hat into frame, my interview is at 15.30 pm, told them I’ll do it for £300 a week. and be in the top 3 by March. think that might sway it.

  13. Forget dyche he seems quite happy where he is,remember after our list of axed managers & the timeframe it’s not a job for the feint hearted job stability will be on any candidates mind.

    1. So the BBC say there is 10 on the list, name 5 of which two are non starters, miss Bill completely and then name 8 not on the list! And these guys get paid for writing this cr*p 🙂

  14. I’ve heard no attached managers have been given permission to speak to us by their clubs which normally you do here.the media are still mentioning managers who have snubbed us to me Bruce is possibly the only candidate & any other unattached manager who comes into radar.

  15. Xia said a couple of weeks ago that he hadn’t been going to the recent games because of business commitments in China running into October.
He will presumably finish his business then come over and meet the potential managers. He is not going to appoint anyone until he meets them.
Next week although frustrating makes perfect sense.

  16. I see Cardiff have guaranteed Championship safety by appointing Neil Warnock, a great manager at this level, what he did at Rotherham last season was amazing. Make no mistake, we aren’t in the promotion race, not even the play-off race, we are in a fight for survival and Cardiff have played their ace card. If you want someone for a short term fix I’d have no complaints with Bruce, but for the long term….please no.

    1. Bruce could be long term with a few pound behind him. He has never got that opportunity yet.

  17. I can understand if Dr. Tony wants to interview all the managers himself, it’s his train set after all.

Just wondering though if they are creating a little window for Clarke to have a go, say 2-3 matches, and if he does okay then perhaps they’ll keep him on.

If not then they appoint a new manager. Might be worth trying as Clarke is already there and knows the players.

    Interesting times ahead anyway.

    1. Pat that crossed my mind earlier on in this search for new manager, give him a few games & see how he fairs. But I think that idea fell on its head but in saying that I understand he’s one of the candidates so give him a trial period unfortunately if it don’t work out & all other avenues are closed were fucked

      1. Clarke is like Sherwood he may do well for a few games but will never sustain. Let’s face his training methods have hardly helped RDM

        1. @Oohaah
Not saying you’re wrong but I’ve worked for bosses who who I thought were doing all the wrong things. I did my best to suggest better strategies but they just couldn’t see it.

Sometimes as Number 2 you can only do so much.

          1. True but Clarke was useless elsewhere as number 1. Caretaker managers very rarely if ever last long. Even Tony Barton and RDM were short term and got found out

    2. No stuff Clarke what’s he been doing all the this time nothing that’s what.
