POLL; Simple question; Bruce, yes or no?

bruce

Ok, I’ve stuck my neck on the block and said that I believe Steve Bruce is the man that we should appoint as our next manager.
But I’ve also seen some disagree vehemently, which is of course, fair enough.

We can go into the ins and outs of what he’s done in the game, but what it all boils down to, is can we swallow another ex Blues manager managing our club?

Yes, you can cite reasons why we might go with someone else, but I’m more interested in the specific question, as in the headline, because I believe it’s important in that the fans’ views might swing opinion.

Please base your vote on the assumption that he’s the only option we have and whether you’d give him a fair chance, as opposed to turning on him and calling him a Bluenose as soon as we lost a game or two.

  1. We could take a punt with any of the younger managers but I feel if we go for Bruce we are more or less sure to be in with a chance of promotion… Only it will be next season as this one is lost already. Only a miracle would see us promoted this season and Villa don’t do miracles ! Let’s give him a chance .

  2. If the search criteria is only limited to out of work managers, maybe. Even still I would hope the club would try to be more ambitious.

Swansea may have signed Bradley but according to the press Swansea were also considering Paul Clement and Marcelino García Toral… both would be a better choice in my mind than appointing Bruce.

  3. The brief was previously experience getting a team out of the Championship. Either that would have to be abandoned or we have a very short list of unemployed managers, or a handful still in a job.

It will probably be Bruce. How long he keeps the job even if we get promoted is another matter.

  4. I think the former Blues connection is being overplayed in relation to Bruce. I think it’s fair to say the McCleish’s appointment fell in the same category as Maclaren – no fan wanted him in any event and the Blues connection just made it worse.

Brum Mail poll has Bruce way ahead at 33% with Sherwood (yep old TS) second at 20%. I would hazard a guess that a greater % of fans will be in favour of Bruce than were supportive of RDM’s appointment.

Dr T – stop messing about and get him in – we need him working with the team soonest.

    1. Yes I hope this doesn’t become some long dragged out saga & gets someone in sharpish loads for the new guy to sort out the clocks ticking.

    2. Forget Sherwood why is everyone forgetting how bad he was he took us into the bottom 3 to start with! Yes we all love him he’s a good character but not good enough for us

  5. Couldn’t agree more Hitch, please don’t waste time Dr T time is at the escent for them lads getting to know his way of performing, Bruce will do me and won’t even think about where he’s from, he’s an ex Man player and learnt his job.Get him in now.

  6. I wonder, if Bruce was currently managing in the Prem or Championship, whether he would be the majority first choice? It seems to me he is the first choice because he is the biggest name in the dole queue. I don’t care a jot for any connections with Blues or Baggies if the man is good enough.

What Bruce would bring is an ability to look the owner in the eye and tell him where money needs to be spent urgently, he won’t be grovelling from day1. I guess he comes across well to the players too.

The problems are the same. You build teams from the back and our keeper is a flapper, Baker is too slow and a hole has appeared again at right back. Midfield is farcical, and we don’t appear to have a right-winger. which means despite the Gunslinger department being well stocked, they are short of bullets.

    1. Fair point OLL although I think there was a fair number of fans that were in favour when Dr T appointed RDM and Bruce was still at Hull.

What I think is important is the need to appoint a new manager quickly and preferably before the end of the international break. Even more discontinuity if Clarke starts a number of games in a temporary position.

    1. Saw that Giddy – seems the broadly favoured short list (in the media) is Wagner, Bruce and Dyche which might suggest Bruce is the ‘gettable’ fallback position. Ah well it’s something to discuss other than how cr*p we are 🙂

  7. WM saying Wagner about to be announced.
I f**king love a good opera, me. Just hope it’s not a tragedy or a farce!!!!

  8. Bruce should only be a back up option at best, its worth testing the water to see if Wagner or Dyche would be interested first. If they are, then its a no brainer.

      1. Wagners only being linked cus he’s presently manager of the top team in our league he’s a novice & far too risky hasn’t this club fuck up too many times already???

  9. Just wish they’d get on with it though. The new manager is going to need as much time as possible with the team.

Next game is Wolves and I’ve got a feeling that this could be a very important match.

    1. Sky sources = Made up nonsense. Never in a million years would this board appoint Steve Cotterill,

    1. Just read his wiki page and to be fair he’s done a decent job at every club he’s been at but Cheltenham Town, Notts County or Bristol City ain’t Villa are they?

      1. We’d be seriously desperate if Cotterells an option he’s supposed to be bookies favourite for the sky blues job & he recently turned down the Newport job wow.come on villa set some fucking standard for an appropriate candidate ffs

  10. Ex Bristol City…and loads of others……he won promotion and that silly cup against Walsall 2 years ago.

  11. As soon.as a bigger job came along (i.e. England or prem), Brucie boy would soon be off. It’s got to be Hodgson for me

  12. We might well be interviewing Cotterill, but it won’t be for the manager’s job.
As for Giggs, well you have to laugh don’t you?

      1. Giggs should learn the trade from grass roots I’m sure he’d be welcome at kiddy harriers.if wagner comes in I’ll be doing an Ooha

  13. This is now getting silly in the press.

Times are saying we will approach Bruce (with back ups in the wings) but give Clarke the chance to prove himself. On the other hand the mirror says Dr T. Is worried about fan reaction to Bruce and has now added Nathan Jones (Luton manager) to our ever lengthening short list because they beat us in the EFL Cup.

We need to think Newcastle not Brentford, Huddersfield or Luton (no disrespect); they got Benitez whilst we penny pinched with Sherwood (rookie) and Remi Garde (who had no experience of English football)

Dr T made a mistake with RDM by not looking further than his two successful seasons (or half seasons!) – let’s hope he’s a quick learner (no pun intended!) Expectations at Villa are massive; pressure from fans, media and opponents, who would like nothing better than reporting on the next ‘Portsmouth’, is immense.

I can’t see who else (who might be available or come) better suited to the job than Bruce with all his playing and managerial experience.

The fans will have no problem with him if he is winning games and losing will be untenable for any new manager.

    1. @H60
Have to agree. Bruce was far from my first choice at the beginning of the season but a safe pair of hands might not be a bad thing now. If it is going to be him I just wish they’d hurry up.

I’d still be delighted if Rowett was unveiled but if not him then Bruce is probably the best out there at the moment.

As I said in an earlier post Bruce has managed clubs that were pretty much cash strapped up to now and he’s done okay. Given a bit of money who knows?

      UTV

  14. The Blues connection means absolutley zero, as far as I’m concerned. Any manager should be a proper pro and it doesn’t matter what other clubs he’s worked at.

Bruce would probably do the job for us – i.e. promotion, either this season or next; he’s also shown that he’s no ‘yes-man’ as far as owners are concerned.

My only real doubt about him is what would happen if the FA were to ‘invite’ him to apply for their post sometime between now and the New Year – would he [or Villa] be able to tell them to stuff it?

I don’t think Steve Bruce is ever going to be a ‘sensational’ appointment wherever he goes; but he seems to have done a lot of hard work at many clubs that usually ended-up punching above their weight, at least for a few seasons. So I think that Villa could do a lot worse than appoint him.

The other names being bandied-about [e.g. Wagner] seem to be one- or early-season wonders who’ve not had that much experience of tough battles yet.

  15. Like others, I don’t think he will be the most exciting appointment, but may be the safe pair of hands we need to steady the ship. Hopefully he’ll also get us organised. Whoever comes in will struggle to get results with the likes of Westwood, Hutton and Bacuna still lingering, and no decent keeper.

    1. its crazy to think nearly 200m spent since hutton came to the club and he still gets a game, last 2 summers we have spent roughly 120m less sales yet we still have bunn hutton bacuna westwood cissko in our 18 man matchday squad

  16. RDM parting statement was a nice ending to his short reign. i think hes right the players will click into gear soon. he has assembled a fairly decent squad, well capable. iam sad to say, only thing missing was the manager, getting the team to preform for the whole 90minutes. his failure to get early points, was down to his negative ways, after getting in front in games, not building on this. eroded the confidence.

bruce and wagner still top two. strange that as both managers are completely at the other end of scale in terms of experience. iam off the fence and all in on steve bruce. i think the villa fans will get behind whoever is chosen. don’t under estimate the power of the ON THE LINE lmao with our owner a tweeter is it called, i think he will be listening this time around judging the vibes before he hires our next victom

    1. TBH, I’d prefer the Board to take a rather more professional approach to selecting a manager than bothering with what’s on Twitter.

If memory serves, RDM was Dr Xia’s choice, not the outgoing directors’ etc., – so having had his fingers burned already, I’d hope that he’ll be listening to people in the business, rather than fans or just noise on ‘social media’!

      1. i can’t believe that he wouldn’t involve round and little more. i am hoping this. cause RDM was always gonna be a none starter. most fans agreed this and its not often we agree
