Gus Poyet and Christophe Galtier Become New Contenders

With Remi Garde’s move to Aston Villa beginning to stall a little, Aston Villa are starting to look at other managerial options. The two names that have surface in the media is Gus Poyet and Christophe Galiter. Poyet is out of a job since being sacked by Sunderland, while Galiter currently manages French side Saint-Etienne. Some sources also believe it looks increasingly unlikely that Villa will have a new manager in time for Villa’s Premier League game against Tottenham.

Let’s start with Gus Poyet, Skysports reported that Aston Villa are going to consider Diego Poyet because of his attacking style of play. But honestly, his recent managerial record has not been great. Poyet isn’t greatly experienced and was sacked from the Sunderland job. Poyet was managing Sunderland during a Sherwood’s Villa 4-0 at the Stadium of Light. Prior to the Sunderland job he did manage Brighton. But his win% isn’t too impressive. He managed to win 44.33% of games in the Championship, which is rather mediocre, while at Sunderland just 30.67% of games. I don’t know how likely this could happen but it appears as Villa fans would be furious if he was brought into the club.

Secondly, is Saint-Etienne manager Galiter. Galiter has managed Saint-Etienne since 2009 and in the process won the Couple de la Ligue in 2012-13 season. He has also managed Marseille for a short time period and Aris Thessaloniki (Greek club). His win ratio is 42% so slightly better than Poyet’s overall. Galiter has earned a good reputation at France by developing the likes of Matuidi, Payet, Sako, Kevin Miralles, Aubameyang, Zouma and Max Gradel during his stint at the club. One draw back for Villa would be that they’d have to pay compensation for Galiter, while Garde is a free agent.

If the Galiter rumour is true, it seems as though Villa’s board will continue to look at France for player and staff arrivals as Villa look to bed in some of the many French league players brought in this summer.

Just what exactly did his gross misconduct sacking from Brighton entail?

Poyet wasn’t in the running, made up story by Sky Sports, going to Greece.

I’d take Galtier over Garde, but two wonderful managers that would be incredible. It’s just tough seeing Galtier coming in and leaving Saint Etienne so early into the season. He’s been there 6 seasons now so he’s gotta have more respect for them than that. But I’d love him in at Villa.

True, we do usually pay managers well. Be interesting if we could get him or Garde, does definitely seem we have an interest in quality foreign managers.

Off subject but according to the Telegraph Shabby is the second most injured player in the PL since 2010 with 32 separate events – he has been absent 7 times due to illness! Need I Say any more?

FWIW Garde still favourite with bookies but Galtier now second favourite followed by Pearson and Moyes. Poyet has dropped off (in the betting I mean 🙂 )

    Just seen tonight’s team news,
Guzan Hutton Richardson Agbonlahor, Westwood Gestede Crespo.
Mac Donald’s having a laugh disgraceful
None of these players would get into any other prem side. Majority would struggle in a championship team absolute disgrace

I think that is the most defensive squad I’ve ever seen? 5/6 defenders and two defensive midfielders. I assume it is a 4-4-2 with Richardson and Bacuna covering on the wings?

I made the mistake of listening to the phone in the other day and had to turn it off because of the Moyes love fest going on – every caller made him sound like he could walk on water. Now there are a bunch of loons on Sky calling for the club to appoint Pearson and slagging off Garde before he is even here. I have to wonder about some supporters at times.

It’s because fans are delusional about what Pearson “did” at Leicester and what Moyes “did” at Everton. They legitimately have no clue that much better football exists outside of England and by far smarter/more tactically aware managers do as well. We need to get into the 21st century or we’ll be screwed more than we are now.

Pearson will never be able to replicate what he did at Leicester. Might has well appoint Keane, both are thugs and a liability.

Off topic – but there was an interesting piece on the BBC website the other day by one of their recently-retired player pundits [forget who the player was] about why VP had become a great place for visting teams: if they can keep Villa subdued for the first 20 minutes, they can almost guarantee that our fans will start to turn on the team before half time.

Today there’s a comment from Lambert about ‘excessive expectations’ at VP…

Sometimes do wonder wonder whether ‘we’ fans aren’t part of the problem with the club.

All I can say is that I’ve had enough with McLeish and Lambert, so certainly don’t want a third helping of the same with Moyes. Not sure about Pearson; found him quite entertaining at Leicester, but he’s a bit like Pardew – could just lose it altogether at any time for the smallest of reasons.

Excessive expectations – Lambert should keep quiet but if finishing above halfway is excessive in the eyes of our recently departed but not lamented manager then no wonder we’re in the sh*t

A little truth to the subdued part, but under a new manager it is a fresh start again. Keep it entertaining and the supporters will be right behind the team – sadly McLeish, Lambert, Sherwood eventually all lost their way and became extremely defensive, hence the abuse.

Because he’s exactly what’s wrong with British managers and the reason I don’t want a single 1. Because he’s still using the bunch of failures like Hutton, Richardson, Gestede and Agbonlahor, 4 players that are the epitome of who’d start under them and what’s wrong with this football club. Far, far better players than them and they’re starting.

Absolutely atrocious team selection. Has McDonald been instructed to ensure this cup competition must not interfere with Premiership survival?

In fact I am that cross I will swear. FFS what is going on at our beloved Villa. Why isn’t Vertout given a chance to obtain more experience? Why is Richardson picked over Sinclair? Why is Kozak not given a chance to gain fitness?

Sorry everyone, I hustled twigged. Our movement towards a French flavour and intention to be better than last year can be described in one French word “farce”.

Sid I think you’re right – bit like the team MON sent to Moscow and look what good that did us. They’ve given up on the cup for survival in the PL – I’ve been open minded about matters at the Villa up to tonight but now I’ve had enough of the way we’re being treated as fans.

What a complete waste of time that line up is – what’s he doing playing for penalties. I’s a cup game and we should be going for it with Gil, Grealish and Ayew playing CF. Shabby starts again – aargh don’t get me going. Off to find the whiskey bottle.

H60 – that sounds like the only ‘sensible’ way to interpret the team selection; I hadn’t thought of it, but you’re probably 100% correct: we’ll just park 10 players in front of Guzan all night and then hope we can screw Saints on penalties… brilliant!

Normally I would say not a great line up, but when you remember this team beat us 6-1 I see what k mac is trying to do. 442 with attacking defensive players could work. Only time will tell. Kozak must be injured not fit or does not fit into the squad personality wise
