A Time To Stay Positive

imageWell a great summer transfer window in my opinion with 7 great value for money good signings.Paul Lambert is no mug when it comes to buying players as you now know.
So now we have bought Okore,Luna,Tonev,Bacuna,Helenius,Steer and Kozak this summer.I think we will find we have some right good gems in that bunch of 7.They all look to me like they want to wear the famous Claret and Blue shirt with pride, work hard and give their all.
Lambert has bought to AVFC a new way of playing which is exiting, attacking and of goal scoring nature.Isnt this what we all wanted after the last few baron years.Lambert has bought in players which he thinks are the ones to suit AVFC and suit him.I think he will live by this young squad and back them to the hilt.Im sure Lambert and the coaching staff will all work hard together with the team to make us a hell of alot better than we have been recently over the past 3 or 4 seasons.I mean how many teams go to Arsenal and win let alone stand firm at Chelsea.
We have had a hard first 3 games close together and 3 points from Arsenal,Chelsea and Liverpool is not to shabby coupled with good performances it is a good start.
Onto Newcastle on the 14th this is a game I will be attending with my son (get in you beauty) and one I think we will be victorious.Newcastle do not look to good at the minute and i think we will do the business. We will have had a chance to practice and work hard on the training ground to bring a better performance to VP on the 14 th.
I really feel we can push on this season and I’m sure all of you do to.It will be fantastic for me and I’m sure you to to see us on the up.It will mean we have made the right choices, bought the right manager and coaching staff in,along with the right sort of players.Lambert looks to be a good coach/motivator plus in my opinion has a good eye for a player.
This is not time to think oh why didn’t we buy this player for that position. This is a time to be happy, positive with the good start we have made and good players we have bought in.Be happy with Lambert sing our hearts out at VP and feel happy we are moving forward.
Finally Paul Faulkner and Randy Lerner they have avoided relegation, got our great club financially stable again and backed Paul Lambert in the transfer window. Our great club now looks well run,has a great foundation and looks ready for the bright future we think we the supporters deserve…UTV…

I do believe the signings are good…I’m glad the calculated risk of blooding youth last year came good (just!) and I hope we can stay clear of the dog fight this year. 10-14th would be acceptable for me with a decent cup run. I still think we need some spark breaking from midfield, but I also believe Lambert’s faith in Delph is like another new signing…the boy is finally getting his chance to show why everyone thought he was a diamond at Leeds.

The one player that will a massive difference this season is our captain marvel Ron Vlaar. After a season bedding into the EPL I firmly believe he will now establish himself up there with the finest defenders in the Premiership if not the world and fully expect him be crowned the PFA player of the season and who knows with a little luck European player of the year.

“Three cheers for Concrete Ron” Hip Hip Hooray!

    (Good post JD).

I’m afraid that I’m not at all impressed by Lamberts transfer window dealings. IMO the squad has only improved slightly (if at all) on last season. Lambert has been extremey naive in not addressing problems that are clear to see! The spine of the team starts at the back with an experienced and efficient back four….Vlaar is nowhere good enough for the premier league whilst Okore and Luna will struggle initially in the Premiership. We desperately needed a central defender with a minimum of two years experience of the PL. the money spent on Kozak would have been better spent on the defence. Failing that, the purchase of a very experienced DM was IMO essential. We are etremely poor in protecting our (already) rocky defence. We create plenty of chances BUT as we seen against Liverpool teams will just be happy to nick a goal against us and then defend their lead. We had no answer to this against Liverpool. Therein lies our problem. If we havent scored a minimum of 2 goals we will, just like last season be unable to maintain our lead on most occasions.
The costcutting has gone too far and we will find ourselves in another relegation scrap this season. We could have prevented this purely by investing the extra sky money (where is it Randy) on two quality signings in the defence and midfield. The club has become a laughing stock and the piss is being taken out of loyal fans bigtime. The fans will be voting with their feet by the end of November….mark my words. The transition bollocks has run its course and is no longer acceptable. A club of our stature should not be embroiled in a relegation fight year after year. Randy and the club have no ambition and are now just content to try and survive in the PL year after year. What hurts most is the pisstaking that Randy seems to think will go unnoticed. Where is the extra sky money…. Where is it.? We have a right to know! We are the backbone of the club. Without us, the club is nothing and is fast becoming a joke. I’m not asking to spend fortunes like MON did. But we are entitled to know why the extra sky money has not been invested. FFS Cardiff, Swansea and Southampton are showing more ambition than us. Its a fucking disgrace. The club I love (and will always do so) is failing us bigtime. Another relegation this season beckons.
    UTV…….
****** message for Randy********** GIVE US BACK OUR PROUD CLUB AND STOP TAKING THE PISS…enough, is enough!

Absolutely spot on Rotterdam at last someone else with a brain that can actually see what’s going on as opposed to the brain washed idiots that think midtable is the holy grail. The only thing I don’t agree with is comment about Okore as he looks to have settled in already and makes vlaar look even more if a useless twat considering he’s our captain and most experienced player. Take a bow Rotterdam great post mate

Oohah… Agree that Okore looks decent. But is it fair on him to be thrown in at the deep end alongside the shit that is Vlaar. I’m concerned that it will affect his confidence bigtime. He should have been introduced slowly with an experience premier league player to bring him on. He is only a younster and desrves a better partner than Vlaar who is well out of his depth!

Agree Rotterdam but with Clark and baker injured there is no one else which is why Barry would of been a great loan signing as he can play left side centre back a well. We missed a trick there imo. I think lambert does throw people in the deep end and hopefully when Clark and baker are fit then okore can be used a bit more sparingly. Everyone thinks that vlaar was poor last season because he had to look after the youngsters well I think it’s the other way round the youngsters were poor because of vlaar!

BWS… i feel sadly that we will struggle again for the reasons given. WTF didnt go in for Caulker who would have only cost slightly more than Kozak? Moreover, an experienced DM would have helped the defence no end by putting out opposition threats and allowing our more attack minded midfielders to flourish. CB and DM is definately my major concern. I feel we will finish about 13th or 14th agter a struggle… Simply NOT good enough IMO.

I do appreciate your point and you are probably right about expectations being lowered, after all who in their right minds buys a football club and expects to make money? But I honestly believe there is an experiment going on down at VP, a ‘Moneyball’ type thing and how it will pan out long term is anybodies guess so lets just enjoy the ride.

So you claim. Owen and Rooney have both gone on record claiming they loved playing with Heskey because he created a lot of space for them, flicked on headers, has actual decent passing accuracy and could hold up the ball. Especially in his prime. We unfortunately didn’t get him in his prime so he couldn’t do that for us.

Heskey was crap in his prime the only time he looked good was when he was a youngster at Leicester and never really fulfilled his potential. As for Owen and Rooney they needed a scape goat for when they didn’t produce and heskey was the ultimate fall guy.

Rotterdam, I quote “The club has become a laughing stock and the piss is being taken out of loyal fans bigtime” and “What hurts most is the pisstaking that Randy seems to think will go unnoticed”.

Ambition? Look at Ireland and Bent, two incredibly expensive players on massive wages. Are they what we want at the club? The manager is buying in hungry young players and turning them into players who want to play for Villa. A few of them won’t cut it but what about Benteke? And Villa’s determination to hold onto him? There’s piles of ambition there, were the owner and manager happy to keep the club in constant relegation battles with dwindling seat and ST sales then they could just populate the club with more Bents, Irelands and Bannans.

Why not give the team a chance, maybe up to Christmas and if things are wrong that aren’t sorted in the January window then that’s the time to get angry. The players all look so much better than the start of last season, and Luna and Okore have slotted straight in and claimed their starting positions.

There seem to be two ways of succeeding in the PL, either dump a few hundred million into a squad of top class players (plus the millions upon millions in wages you’ll need to pay them) or develop your players into something special. Lerner has tried the first way and is now trying out the second.

I tell you what, I’d much rather support Villa than Newcastle, Sunderland, Wigan, QPR (they did well with their millions), Stoke, West Brom, even Southampton, West Ham, Everton, Swansea and Norwich. And really I’d rather poke skewers in my eyes than support Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool or the Manchester clubs.

No problem with buying young hungry players and not spending £80m on bale but surely a couple of signings on loan in the Barry mould wouldn’t have been to much to ask for

I only hate loans when we are just polishing up a young player simply to go back to their parent club the finished article eg Kyle walker. Iv no problem with older players that are always professional coming to the end of their career that can make a difference. Eg robbie keane was a master strike from mcleish and his goals were probably the reason we stayed up. He was the ultimate pro while he was here and did the business for us. Barry would have done the same IMO

            Andrew September 4, 2013 at 5:50 pm . Reply

I get it, but loans tend to have a set fee to buy them. Few don’t. Walker however despite him always going back was a needed player and we then signed Lowton cheaper who’s probably just as good as Walker.

    Nice original post BTW JD.

One thing I’ve been wondering, wouldn’t it be good if the same scouting approach was applied to the academy. I know it’s not so easy to bring in anyone under 17 or 18 because of school etc (there was a 16-year-old coming in from Torquay this transfer window and he decided to stay there) and it can’t be easy moving away from your friends and probably family. But it would be great if we could be bringing in people at the same level as Grealish from abroad. A friend of mine lives in Southampton and says the flat below his is rented by Saints and they put two or three junior players in together and do a certain amount of mentoring on top of the football side of things.

And Rotterdam, talking about this no longer being a transitional period, what a load of complete bollocks. Everything is still being turned around, especially the team. You can’t just click your fingers and have a team there ready to go out and thrash people. You need a settled team, with players who know how to work with each other and where each others strengths and weaknesses are. Once the core is there you can fine tune it. Players like Lowton, Benteke, Westwood and even Guzan came on in leaps and bounds throughout last season, from the shaky start to properly gelling by the end of the season. They’ve mostly hit the ground running too this season. No, they’re not perfect but the owner and manager aren’t stupid. They have to reduce debt and costs, bring in players they can develop and strengthen positions where they need strengthening. It’s going to take time and really, it’s better to move slowly up the table over a few years than get fed up after a season and demand the owner dump all his money into the club when everyone already knows that didn’t work the first time.
