LISTEN: Tim Sherwood “It’s a game we should’ve won”
First let me say that I don’t think anyone can fault the effort today.
Sherwood said he’d be picking what he thought was his best side and there’s no doubt whatsoever to my mind that they ran their hearts out for the manager.
Indeed, we looked by far the better side in the first half, although we lacked what was required in the final third, which was only the same as per usual.
We even came out the stronger side in the second half and my thoughts were turning to how long it would last before Sherwood had to change players purely because they were burnt out, having given everything.
And then on the hour, after some really nice play, Jordan Ayew provided a careful, neat header to give us the lead.
1-0 it was and the crowd were absolutely buzzing and the atmosphere fantastic.
But as much as the players tried, it ultimately wasn’t good enough was it?
The lead only lasted a few minutes and Richards, who I thought had had a pretty decent game until then gave away a needless freekick just outside the area, pretty much right in front of the goal.
Guzan positioned himself and I’m sure I’m not the only one who was filled with trepidation.
How often has Guzan just looked like he’s totally in the wrong place from a free?
I’m know nothing about goalkeeping, but even I can see it and it’s been worrying for a long time.
And there was the reply for the equaliser.
Sigurdsson curled one over the wall and Richards, who jumped well, couldn’t stop it.
I’m sure we all knew where it was going and so it proved.
Don’t get me wrong, it was a great free kick, but a better goalie would have saved it and it’s simply a mistake that Guzan has made too many times. I really worry about him now.
After he’d done so well up to that point too.
The game opened up and Grealish came off for Gil.
Gabby had a chance or two, as did Lescott in the dying minutes, but in the 86th minute, Naughton crossed and there were three Swansea players ready to receive, all pretty much unmarked.
Andre Ayew got there first for a fairly easy close range shot to make it 1-2.
And then, that was it.
All over.
So Sherwood played his best side and said that this was a cup final and that we’d win it.
He’s been proved totally wrong on both counts and now I really don’t see where he has left to turn.
We needed the win today and simply didn’t get it.
He has to go, as although I still like him and think he’s been somewhat unlucky, he’s committed Hara-Kari with his statements.
It’s just a matter of if he walks or will the board act now.
I’ll put a poll up to see what you think, but I suspect I already know the answer.

It doesn’t matter how much you say it, it doesn’t make it happen. We went through this in the sixties and seventies and it nearly destroyed the club – and now again we have an inept Board led by an inept owner and chairman who doesn’t even bother to come to Villa Park anymore.
We slipped two divisions then, mark my words we will slip two divisions again but this time it will be many years before we return (if we return) to the top such has become the gulf in finance between the Prem and the rest – and next season it gets worse.
I really fear for our great club but until Lerner goes and we get new owners and management nothing is going to change and, frighteningly, Lerner will probably get the sale completely wrong as well.
Maybe I’ll feel better in the morning but I doubt it.
Agreed and ironically rekegation may mean Letner goes as he wont get as much sky money and crowds will be much lower. He deserves to go down and do do the fans for supporting this shit for so long and not voting with their wallets.
I understand your point OohAh and to be fair you’ve been consistent in your views even though many of us disagreed with you – you probably wish you hadn’t been so right. The majority of fans support their club with blind optimism (and I Don’t mean that as a criticism) and I’m one of them – it will always get better is the view so they keep going and supporting – that’s what fans do. In any case most revenue flows through the TV deals.
H60 – the most frustrating part is that only Lerner can actually sell the club or give it extra funding.
There’s no way of forcing him to do it [and we’ve seen what US owners can do to UK subsidiaries if they decide to ‘walk’ away…] and as far as any of us are aware, there’s no secret consortium of wealthy Villa fans out there to make him a realistic offer.
And so many used to moan about Deadly…
Deadly was crap as well and he sold to Lerner. Lerner has officially got the club for up for sale to appease the fans unofficially he has deliberately priced the club out the market imo. Once we go down we will probably never recover and if we did it could take up to 20 years Leeds are a classic case b
Deadly was the reason we failed to build on winning the league and the European Cup. Nottingham Forest is another good example OohAh.
And so many still moan about Deadly!
C’mon, when, after William McGregor, have we ever had owners who were any good??
how much will lerner lose by us going down all new players will be discounted to get rid off,all new contracts hutton westwood gabby its frightening ,and with mighty fox in charge we will drop like a stone hard to believe its only 6 springs ago cheating ref cost mon a cup win
seen interesting stat it took lambert 28 games to lose 14,sherwood managed in 22
Dicanio after the baggies mauling he made his own way home.
The above is a reply to Andrew don’t know now why it landed here
I took time to watch MOTD, the free kick I’d say on Cuzan 50-50 he lay blame by saying I couldn’t see the ball, the wall did jump high and have to say excellent kick, Cuzan positioning was wrong to far over and unable to get at the ball, as for the players no wanting ,no passion, no belief in themselves as footballers, they are lost to what to do, all that is down to Sherwood, he had the Gaul to make excuses in an interview by saying clubs in a hole not him, looking at Sherwood I’d say he knew its over for him and tried to talk the talk by saying I can hold my head high, he’s a broken man.
It’s simple, we haven’t had a proven premiership manager since houlier – as one with this experience would not stand for the way the club is run. If we sack Sherwood and get Moyes we should all try and be happy, as I cannot see anyone else want to blemish their CV with this pile of shite at the present time.
We can mention European managers, but they would need time to adjust, time we just do not have.
True enough Saddened, you would have thought Sherwood had more sense before taking the job on, bet he thought I’m the man? have to say done himself no favour up till now,but them player’s are lost in football know how, its coming on in five mins having another look.
You’re a glutton for punishment Bill – I can’t watch it once let alone twice!
Hitch, you know what? I’ve just noticed someone who use to work on turnstiles sitting in the dugout, they wouldn’t do that would they? recruited internal staff.to be honest we would get better coaching from the council parks games, well that’s it for me spending my £sd on gardening and allotment, even going out to get drunk today for a change, we are down and out.
I think I actually feel worse this morning and couldn’t/can’t bring myself to watch MOTD as it’s all too depressing.
When we get relegated (and that’s seriously how it’s looking), can anyone see Lerner putting in the serious investment that will be required to get us straight back up?
The team is far too lightweight for the championship and I find the thought incredibly worrying 🙁
Have a lie down Badger you’ll feel better mate 🙂 lol
Last year PL managed to get us 10 points in the first 4 games and we squeaked relegation by 1 place. This year Tim has got 4 points in 10 games. Enough said.
However, I fear Randy won’t sack him, not because he is hopelessly out of his depth, or out of loyalty, but because of the run of fixtures we have got. Put a new man in now to face City, then go to Spurs Everton and Saints and he would be finished before he starts.
I expect Tim to get another month, then we will try to bring a miracle worker in to get us back from the dead before Christmas. Will it be too late?…. Probably
What’s the difference – we’re finished before we start that run of games anyway. Might be better to bring in a new manager ahead of a run of games where fans will have zero expectation anyway. Looks like we’ll be stuck on 4 points for quite some time – at least I’ve got a month in the sun to look forward to 4,000 miles from Villa Park with plenty of rum.
I do believe we’re now the worst team in the league Sunderland now have a 12th man in fat Sam.we fluked it last season & tbh should of been relegated.it feels like a slow & painful death but I’m now prepared for the worst.
Giddy it wont be slow , as i think we will be almost gone by Xmas…. But it could be painful !!
Painful is being relegated on the last day after living with hope for 38 games. I’m with you, reckon we’ll be gone long before the end if the season in which case I suspect most of us will have stopped bothering.
Death by a thousand cuts
The Mail are reporting that William Hill have suspended the “next manager to go” market after 4 bets totalling £2k going on Sherwood.
I hope the hierarchy have done their job for once and have actually got someone lined up ready to come in.
Probably Lerner trying to recoup some of the payout 🙂
I guarantee you Badger that if it’s any of the names being bandied about it will make no difference. That Sky report was spot on Lerner is letting marketing people buy players and choose managers we need proper football people not learners cronies.
Your probably right Hitch reported some Yank put 10 grand on Villa to sack their manager,
Good debate on $ly;
http://www.skysports.com/watch/video/tv-shows/sunday-supplement/10042996/sherwood-situation-ridiculous
William Hill have suspended betting that Sherwoid could be sacked today.
They forgot to mention that Lerner pulled the plug as mom failed miserably and that was without Spurs and man city in the picture. Once man city became super rich it was game over anyway. From learners PoV why spend tens of millions for a top 4 spot when he can keep us bottom 4 on a shoe string and make millions in the process. As a businessman I’d do the same as a villa fan it stinks
He’s gone mate http://m.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/34631549
NEW POST UP SHERWOOD SACKED

He’s been sacked just announced http://m.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/34631549
How many managers are we gonna go through, before we look further into the club. to see its rotten to the core. when a football manager isnt consulted in recruiting his playing staff and a non football person does the recruiting. alarm bells must be going off.
last season and years before we have had a bottom 5 finishes, reasons are either poor managers or poor finances handed to the managers. but for the board or who ever is running the show, to hand over just the money recouped in transfers only and not replace the players that left properly. all the summer signings had one thing in common. COULD be a good signing in the long haul, but not instant.
finally whos next ???? do we really care anymore. i really cant see this current squad as it stands surviving, true it will improve as players settle and get up to speed. but a football person would have known this and not made this amateur mistake.
oh and heard brad guzan is getting blamed for the first goal. i think sometimes you have to applaud the freekick. brads position looked spot on for me. the wall jumped, so hats off to the taker
back to the stone, i crawled from under 🙂
