I said that before Sherwood’s appointment, I wasn’t too bothered about this game, but after his appointment, I thought we should go for it and do everything to win the game.
We got the result, but I don’t think we did everything to win the game, particularly in the first half, which was frankly really poor.
In fact it was the same old, where we didn’t have an effort on target.
The only points of note were the penalty shout, where Vlaar could have been pulled for leaning on a Leicester player, but for me, it would have been harsh.
Then, there was a cracking shot from James, which Given did really well to save.
We played way too narrow for my liking, with a tempo that was way too slow and predictable.
A typical Lambert scaredy-cat approach, which is just awful to watch.
Marshall out, in my opinion, if that’s what he has to offer and indeed he had better be brushing up his CV, as I’ve no doubt he’ll be getting the bullet.
So, poor overall and Leicester looked better value in the first half.
Sherwood made his way to the dressing room at half time and his team talk definitely had an effect in my opinion, as we immediately looked better.
I want to mention the pundits and commentators here, as I believe they all had it spot on about where our problems lie.
It probably isn’t rocket science and I’m sure that anyone who watched the game would have seen it, but they demonstrated perfectly why Benteke seems to have been so poor lately.
It’s because he often has no support and no one to give/knock down the ball too, because the mids are too scared to get forward, for fear of not being able to support the defence.
It’s no wonder he has looked uninterested and it’s why I haven’t slated him much.
The midfield quite simply do not support the strikers, a fact backed up by a quote that the midfield has one assist between them in a stupid amount of games.
Anyway, it was obvious that Sherwood saw the problem straight away and called for a change, which resulted in players rushing forward when they had chance.
What a refreshing change from the Lambert tactics, where the mantra was safety first and nothing else.
While of course being too gung ho will see us concede, we will at the same time at least score goals, which is what the game is about.
I’m instantly upbeat over Sherwood’s appointment, just for this alone.
Back to the game then and after actually applying some pressure, we looked the better side.
Balls were going into the box and do you know what the single biggest memory from today’s game will be?
I saw Benteke smiling. Not once, but twice!
I suspect he’ll be relishing Sherwood’s appointment, as he knows he’s going to get chances. This can only bode well.
Bacuna scored a nice goal, which was just as well, as he was about to be hooked.
And then Sinclair got the second, which should have meant that we were comfortable.
Only for Leicester to pull one back via a really good header.
Which actually made it a bit of a nail-biter for the last few minutes.
Summing up then, a load of rubbish in the first half and more like a cup tie, in the second.
MOTM? Without a doubt, Given, who kept us in the game.
Ok, £56k a week for a no 2 goalie is daft.
But when you have his quality to call on, it doesn’t seem quite so bad, does it?
Would Guzan have made that save? I’m not so sure.
Anyway, we’re in the hat for the quarters draw, which can’t be bad.
I’m an extremely happy bunny today.

I hope there’s a backroom overhaul.
Very impressed with TS press conf today. I feel more positive already.
who’s got a link for this press conference ????
more i hear sherwood speak, more i am impressed. only hope hes not all mouth i am sure hes not.
At least you can understand him.
There’s five minutes on the bbc website.
i just seen it on ytube lol i hope it was same 🙂
shame that win yesterday wasn’t 3points, i hope we get at stoke and win this weekend i hate being in the bottom three.
no mention of the coaches or assistants, i also think this hungry clean slate will help us, things had gone stale , brown bread DEAD lol
On the Telegraph website, asked about his inexperience, he basically said there’s some very experienced poor coaches out there! Lol!!! I really think we’ll get the Stoke win. I didn’t this time last week!!!!
no i totally agree, i have been in denial all season, but from the leicester away game i realized we were in shit, this guy wasn’t close to my first choice, but he certainly breathing belief into fans and if hes doing same to the squad, we have a very good chance indeed
I was talking to a Stoke workmate of mine today.
He said they have no defence, as they’re all injured.
I replied “that’s ok, we have no attack!”.
But seriously, he was worried about the game and gutted that we’d got Sherwood in.
He was hoping we’d hang on to Lambert until after this game, which says it all.
New manager influence about time another team got stuffed can’t wait til Saturday.
Villa v Albion
Villa V West Brom in the cup.
That has to be a great draw!
Bring on the fucking yam yams Wembley here we come.
Baggies!!!!!
That will be a tough game. Pulis doing a great job already.
Should win but will get knocked out by pool arsenal or utd we all know we rarely beat those teams the best of times. Plus we will meet one of those in semi and another one in final. Think utd will win as no CL and LVG will want a trophy
Nah. Man U or Arse go out in quarters. The winnrrs of that go out in the semi whilst Liverpool go out too.
Have you ever thought of anti-depressants OoAhh?
Rubbish Utd and arse are playing each other
OohAh the point is we could avoid all three in the semis. Assuming ManU beat Prston then either they if Arse go out in the QF. Either could then be drawn against the Bindippers in the SF – but you are right it’s likely we will have to beat at least one to lift the cup. Unlikely -OK but when did we last get drawn at home in every round and its 55 years since we were last drawn at home in the QF.
True like you say we will have to beat 1-2 of these teams. No chance just can’t see it. And if we play utd we will just get cheated out of anyway. Fa cup more liked fixed cup
It’ll be the clash of the newbies.
Tough quarters…was hoping for Reading. Anything can happen in the cup oohaah, ask Bradford!!!
Home tie vs the baggies, yes please and thank you! We’ll give them a fucking hiding! Walk in the park, I can see Wembley already utv
Surrounded by baggies at home and work . I’m well up for this . Let me do the team talk. We must beat them . No one gives a s**t about the blues now.We need to shut tescos up once and for all. We are the pride of Midlands and always will be.
OoooAAAA you are amazing 1-0 Preston
It didn’t last typical
Come on Preston!
I think I finally found a more boring team than Villa under Lambert. United… Oh my god they are dreadful to watch.
Callum Robinson is now on! Come on Robinson!
Should’ve made a better choice at 2-1 down to take on the defender instead of shooting at first sight as he could’ve drove past him.
So offside goal, a foul that lead to a goal and a dive gives United the 3-1 win. Booo
Fa cup needs utd in it. So they will get all big decisions. Not on CL so lvg will want to win his first trophy. That’s why we’ve no chance. Would rather get 3 points of wba than beat them in a cup competion we can never win
We can definitely win it. I suspect Arsenal are going to beat United. Despite United only losing 1 in the last 19, they look absolute garbage and United should be winning the game.
hate to be bringing up past comments. but i said robinson needed this time with preston, when he was recalled. you said he won’t learn anything down in league 1, well yesterday he made bad decisions in the game, like you pointed out. so if hes got anything about him he will learn from these. so loaning him was the right thing.
isn’t Robinson cup tied i thought he played earlier in the cup
my bad it was Johnston who was cup tied
West Brom will be very difficult don’t know why people think were already through. They’ve been better than us this season and with pulis always seem to play solid.
Hodgson the Fucking fanny saying Rooney didn’t dive!??? I cant stand that man.
Of course it was a fucking dive! Is he mental! The ManU bias was appalling tonight…
Didn’t watch game as obvious they would win. They are still cheating c***s though
We got the scum Mark 2,in the next round they will come in their thousands parading their gypsy clogs and gypsy dress hollering at the full moon enayyy old eyeyon. With their unwashed faces grubby with the black cuntray mud. They have their Tesco bags as football tops with crayon scrawled albyon on the front. Hand in hand they come husband & wife (brother n sister) 3 eyed,15 toed, eyebrows a meeting straight across gypsay Albyon.
Brilliant if somewhat politically incorrect LOL 🙂
I’ve just seen that we let Daniel Jonson go for £50k;
http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2015/02/16/aston-villa-sold-daniel-johnson-for-just-50k-reveals-preston-man/
That seems dirt cheap????
Makes me wonder if the academy pays for itself, let alone make any money.
What do you expect half a million ? He’s done nothing in the game.
I don’t have a clue what young players fetch these days tbh, but given that nobodies were fetching £50k donkey’s years ago, it just seems cheap.
I must have cost way more than that to train him, I’d have thought.
Did well enough at Chesterfield and Oldham to fetch at least a quarter million.
unwanted players from our academy like johnson. should have sell on clause, instead of low fees like 50k some players develop later than others. the quality of our academy needs sorting out, we are definitely not getting the most from it.
For some reason this is the cup draw I wanted. With TS being in charge for a couple of weeks I think it’s very winnable. I definitely didn’t want a lower league team as we’ve proved vulnerable to these before.
Unlike some of the others who’ve posted I’m not going to slag off the Baggies. I remember catching the bus up to West Brom and having to walk from the city border where the buses terminated and seeing the great Jeff Astle play amongst others. Saw some great games between us and the Baggies and I never felt about them the same as I did about the bluenoses (pure hatred basically).
I think this is a sort of bonus game for us, a time to get excited and if we win great and if not then it’s been a long time since we made the QF of the cup.
However all games being drawn at home just the Baggies between us and a trip to Wembley, makes you think doesn’t it?
I was 6 when Villa lifted the cup last and I remember Johnny Dixon going up to get the cup. Is this the year we do it again?
The best part of changing managers is that we can dream at last.
Villa for the Cup! (and staying up of course)
Pat, I was an involuntary Albion supporter, for a short while as a young kid (couldn’t get anyone to take me to VP) and I had the pleasure of watching Astle. Great player, as you say.
Hence, same as you, no major dislike of the Albion.
Same. Always had a soft spot even though they were always jealous of us. But Birmingham City…don’t get me started…
Agreed not the same as the scum but still want to beat them. Remember going to watch villa at Abion in the league cup and getting hammered – 6-0 I think it was (although my memory could be playing tricks with me) on a mud heap of a pitch. It belted down all night so at least you couldn’t see the Villa fans tears
Your name reminded me of another match I went to at the Hawthorns. Just looked it up and it was 29th October 1960 at the Hawthorns and we won 2-0 with Hitchens (of course) getting a goal.
I probably remember this more because of the 6-2 total tonking we gave the bluenoses in the game before with Hitchens getting a wonderful hat-trick.
I’d take either of those scores against the Baggies 🙂
Hitchens was my first football hero and the first game I saw at Villa Park -1960 v Blackpool. We drew 2-2 and Hitchens scored two brilliant headers first half. The great Sir Stan Matthews played in that game as well and I had the honour of meeting him many years later at a cup game at Port Vale – a real gent. Happy Days.
Don’t like the baggies fucking hate the SCUM.
Just been talking to a baggies fan, he said he hasn’t been so excited since he married his sister.
Corker 😀
you should be on stage for sure, so funny
Yes nath the first one out of town! (The old ones are the best).
. we need humor around here 🙂
I love the positivity Sherwood has brought back with his appointment and our style of play could be very exciting next season, as for now he has said planting his own methods won’t be necessary. However, looking at his interview again yesterday a few things bothered me..
For one, he still seems hung up on Spurs. When asked what he would say a year ago if someone told him he’d be here managing the mighty Villa, his reply was simply “Well I fully expected to be managing Spurs at that time” and he seemed to refer to them as ‘we’ at times. Now I could have been just hearing things.
But someone did post online that when talking about Villa he was referring to the team as “they” and not “we”. Now granted this is a small thing, he hasn’t really managed the side yet but still it would’ve been nice if he had referred to us as a tight unit and shown togetherness.
Anyway, that’s just me picking at very small points! Loving the positivity it was greatly missed, let’s make the rest of this season a happy one!
UTV!!
He was saying ‘they’ pal, but in his defence he hasn’t met any of the lads yet on a personal level so I wouldn’t read to much into it. The Spurs hang-up I don’t agree with, he was asked questions about Spurs and he answered honestly. Looks an honest bloke, rubbed a few up the wrong way with some comments while at spurs, might another little we need around the place right now. utv
Yeah, I suppose he can hardly say “we” after a 15 minute talk halfway through the game. Otherwise love what he’s been saying and implying, seems to be all the right things and it’s brought a lot of supporters back who had given up under Lambert. Long may it continue.
One of my old gaffers who I keep in touch with is a Spurs supporter. He reckons we will be alright with Sherwood.Likes to play attacking football and plays 2 up front a lot. Also he says he’s good with youth development…
Scott Marshall has gone utv
Like the quotes from Sherwood today, said no players will be played out of position. So no more seeing Weimann wasted out wide hopefully!! Scott Marshall has officially left the club, rumours on Twitter that Sherwood’s coaching team will be revealed later today. Sounds like hope more than anything though, as our coaching staff now consists of just one goalkeeping coach!
Weimann wasted out wide….. Think he’s more wasted as a footballer!!!
His goal record when played off Benteke centrally would suggest he’s not a bad player though.
