Villa 2 – 0 Albion; rubbish first half, loads of talking points and WEMBERLEY!

What a bloody roller coaster that was!
I’m totally elated, so am struggling for words, but I’ll give it a go.

Ok, the first half was basically shocking. There were far too many players who quite simply weren’t performing in my opinion, but even if we’d lost this game, I’d got it in my head that I wasn’t going to name them, as for me, it just isn’t the right time to be slating the players about a cup game.

Contrary to the commentary I was listening to (the Beeb), I thought the ref was awful from the off and he gave a bad decision against both sides in the first five minutes. Ok, keep the game flowing but when they’re not fouls, just get it right.

Getting to the point then and it’s more about Sherwood again.
There’s no doubt whatsoever from the overall game that he knows how to motivate the players in my opinion.

The fact is we were rubbish in the first half, but came out a different team and scored within five minutes. Surely this can’t be a coincidence, can it?

I could rattle on about how Sherwood made attacking subs and compare him to Lambert, who would have tried to hold the game, to no avail. But I won’t bother, as surely anyone can see it now.

More important than looking back on Lambert’s disastrous reign, is those two shocking sending off decisions.
Even more important is, what were those fans thinking, in invading the pitch before the game was over?

And even more important than that is if we can avoid the winner of the Man U-Arse game in the next round, we have a very serious chance of actually winning the FA cup!

Hard to salgg-off the team for the performance in the first 20-30 minutes [I actually thought we’d started to turn it before half-time..] since they were clearly missing Hutton and Benteke.

Presumably Sherwood had a few choice words at half-time, with the appropriate response. Job done.

The ref was poor: I heard the MOTD people praising him and wondered what they were watching; he looked out of his depth and managed to get both red cards completely wrong.

As for the morons who invaded before the end – said it on the other thread and repeat it here -actually half the ground could be heard shouting the same at them : “What a load of wankers…”

    1. Badger123 avatar
      Badger123

We definitely missed Benteke, imo, as he proved the link in moving the ball from our half to theirs on Tues.
But surely Prem players should see this and adapt? We just didn’t and it was back to the same crap as under Lambert, imo. We played far too safe.

Agreed, the half time team talk was job done and this is what he brings to us, imo.
You don’t need to be brilliant tactically for us at the moment; just make the players play to their best. I think Sherwood has demonstrated he can do it.

As for the fans on the pitch, I can understand it.
      But before the game’s finished?
Utter madness in this day and age.

Just shows how starved of sucess the bloody club has been though (take note Lerner).
Even on Tuesday, you’d have thought we’d won the league!

Begs the question since lamberk we always play one good then one bad half. Of vise versa. Let’s hope Sherwood sorts this asap

Badger – I just don’t buy the “starved of success” line. Imagine a sex-starved middle-aged bloke telling that to the magistrate after he’s been caught groping the scantily-clad girls on Broad Street tonight!!

Seriously – they tarnished the club’s image badly; our fans just another lot of yobs, not much different to Chelsea’s recent image problem.

Like you I’m old enough to remember just how ‘unpleasant’ some grounds could be in the 70’s and 80’s, and I never wanted to see that sort of behaviour again – and certainly didn’t think that Villa fans would be so stupid – 5 minutes from the end of a game we were WINNING, FFS…

Apples and oranges there…. Comparing rape to a pitch invasion is as extreme as saying the fans are like the racist Chelsea fans… The fans were idiots for running on the pitch before Ft and it shouldn’t be encouraged but none of it was violent.

Thursday morning I had an email from VP saying:

“The Holte End and North Stand are now sold out but plenty of tickets remain in the Trinity Road and Doug Ellis Stand wings….Supporters can buy up to six tickets per transaction but all sales must be for supporters with a varied booking history.”

So are the club ignoring their own rules on ‘booking history’?

        1. apparently the club were surprised by a rush for tickets on Saturday morning

The first half performance was still better than most of our full performances all season, but the second half was what the fans know we capable of doing and it was great.

Been saying for a while, I think we are a better team with Benteke not included. The midfielders get involved, the line striker gabby plays his heart out. An inform benteke is a different matter, but how long do you keep including?

Interesting mr cheeses are we better without benteke debateable

      1. Mr_cheese avatar
        Mr_cheese

As highly rated as benteke is, he is nowhere near the shadow he was last season and the only reason he is being played is because we haven’t the alternative option. In form, he would be started 11.the form he has maintained all season is not worth putting him on and.building the team around.
You pointed it out earlier, gabby has picked his form up and seems to increase game on gamE with him as the line forward, the midfielder have stepped their game up in this new attacking style and it is paying ofF.

Shearer unfortunately made some good points on gabby about his lacking instinct to run before the ball is kicked. I have no doubt that he can build on this thougH, especially with the impressive passes and crosses starting to be producEd

I’m hearing seats ripped up at VP???!!! Radio 5L reporting ‘several pitch invasions during the game’…It was just the one FFS!!!!!

    1. Ardent Villain avatar
      Ardent Villain

      BBC website report
” An already powder-keg atmosphere was ignited when West Brom’s Claudio Yacob was harshly sent off for a second yellow card just before Sinclair wrapped up the win with Villa’s second.
Some Albion fans ripped out several seats and hurled them on to the pitch while Villa’s supporters prematurely invaded the playing surface in a victory celebration before referee Anthony Taylor had sounded the final whistle”

  9. All’s well that ends well!

Apparently according to Stan Collymore, Sherwood threw the cups and saucers around at half time and what a response. Good on you Tim Sherwood, I like your approach and stuff those who don’t like positive people.

More over. Look at this season, it took two thirds of the season to sack Lamberk. We now have someone who is getting some results – I can live with three wins to two defeats every five matches.

Last match two strikers scored. This match two midfielders scored. What odds would we have been given six weeks ago on four goals in two matches and this combination of scorers..

Finally, lets hope for a kind draw and win the semi. I want us to win the cup, but a final performance against Manure or Arse should see us in Europe next season. Now lets not do what the blue noses did and compete in the Championship in Europe.

Ps QPR have blown a two game in hand advantage this week. If we win time-out at Sunderland there will be a number of other clubs starting to feel the pressure of relegation.

  10. To me questions have to be asked on the stewarding side, first they seemed to be led by a guy that just came out of the nick, why was they standing out of the seats in groups ? where was the police and stewards to ward them off, OK it was expected after the whistle for the crowd to come on, but also idiots on the cross bar , not on, bad ground control even knicked the corner flag before the game was over.

    1. Ardent Villain avatar
      Ardent Villain

You’re right – the stewarding looked very odd. There were lines of police just standing in front of the Albion fans and not moving, but somehow all the Villa stewards just seemed to vanish when the shit started in the Holte/ Witton Lane corner. Where did all the orange hi-viz jackets suddenly disappear to?

I missed it, but why was Benteke out? If it was out of choice, it was a good time to experiment, and eventually it worked. Although we clearly had no Plan A under our predecessor, it’s good to have alternatives…Also, just heard one of the early pitch invaders on the radio. He said they were all there awaiting the final whistle, and when the ref blew for a corner they thought it was the end of the game…a genuine mistake from clearly excited fans…fair enough…So chuffed!!!!

Still hyped up – great atmosphere and support. There was 40,000 fans in the ground and once again a handful of mindless idiots tried to spoil what still is a brilliant day. I don’t care which team they ‘claim’ to support we don’t want them in our ground.

The game – I thought we stood off too much in the first half although I agree we were starting to come into the game more towards the end of 45 mins. Second half we played a higher tempo, a higher line and really pressed Albion. Thought we were missing Beneteke as a target man first half but second half changed our style pushing the midfielders up and played with more width using the speed of Sinclair (in particular) to good effect. Delph defo my MOM although thought Sinclair, Westwood and Cleverley all played well. TS may just start to get the absolute best out of Delph by freeing up to play a box to box game.

I also thought the ref was poor giving unwarranted cards yet missing a blatant tackle from behind in the first half where the Albion player went straight through the back of our player. Couldn’t tell on the Yacob sending off although over the two games he probably earned enough points for a red 🙂 We left early (cos of the the young grand kids) so missed the Grealish sending off. Look forward to watching MOD – bet they show more of the 0-0 draw!

Nice to be happy again being a Villa supporter.

Was shouting at the TV all match that the ref was crap…,..almost as crap as the total rubbish from Shearer and co……..
No sending offs needed at all……embarrassment.
Pitch invasion before end also an embarrassment……but as I said on FB…….
” Some people are on the pitch…”they think its all over – it is now”…..if Germans excepted it then a bunch of yam yams and the FA should belt up……even Robbie savage said its called excitement and passion and everyone excepts and wants it in the earlier rounds.”
We will be punished though as the suits are worse than Shearer and the ref.

Morning my optimistic friend. Great day in the Holte yesterday – Villa Park was absolutely rocking. Not since the great SF win against Tranmere can I remember an atmosphere to beat it.

I tell you it’s down to one man – TS seems to have motivated everyone nit just the players but dans as well.

Only downside – why is it that just lately our great performances and results are overshadowed by controversy – poor refereeing and mindless behaviour by some idiots yesterday so all the media will talk about is that and who gets the headlines – Pullis!

Albion should also be sanctioned for their fans ripping up seats and throwing them at Villa fans – disgraceful!

The referee was an embarrassment from start to finish. Both sending offs were ridiculous. The Yacob one it looked as if he wasn’t going to give a foul at first and then reacted to the Vila bench overreacting, or got a call from his linesman. Either way it was an awful decision.

A lot of us were sceptical about Sinclair, but I have to say he looks a really dangerous player when he is running at the opposing defence.

I think there should be enough positivity about the place to see us OK come the end of the season. If we can get a good result at Sunderland we can really push on from there and start moving away from the bottom.

What a difference a couple of decent performances and results make.

  21. Thought the whole team were great in the second half but throughout the match they looked like they were really trying.

Just want to say that the best player on the pitch IMHO was Sanchez when he came on (great substitution by TS).. He was a ball magnet in mid-field and held the ball really well but his passing was superb at times, all forward and all positive. He was positioning balls so that players would have to run for them. The player he reminded me most of was Pirlo and that’s a hell of a compliment.

Wonder if his problem under Lambert was that he was trying to pass positively while no-one was running.

Anyway we’re looking like a real team at last.

Fully agree OohAh; should have mentioned before. I thought looked really motivated. There was one run he made in the second half when Gabby took the ball and sprinted off. I thought no ones going to be up in the area when Gabby gets there but no there was Zog sprinting like a demon from the halfway line ready for the ball from Gabby. Impressive or what?

Tabloids trying to slate Villa fans but it was the Albion fans hitting people with chairs.Supporters should of waited till the game was over before running on to celebrate with the boys as both players & fans alike have had a rough time of it.Nice to see supporters and players celebrating together. The moon paper if you get my meaning reporting about Villa fans when it was the Albion fans that were violent but no word of that.Onto Wemberleeee good chance of getting to the final be nice if we could win it and stay up utv

    1. Have a look at the Mail site, some lad had his head split by a flying seat.
Villa will be in the shite cause imo they failed in their duty of care. Don’t think we’ll be thrown out, they’ll probably be hit hard with a massive fine.

      1. Not a chance we’ll be chucked out remember 2010 at the stye?the villa fans made some renovations to the away end after the SCUM invaded the pitch.that was more hostile no banning action was taken the SCUM progressed to the next round unfortunately heavy fine.

      2. BWS, do you remember in the 70s -80s the skum at Villa park? The whole of the north stand was given to them, that very same thing happened seats ripped up and skimmed at the Villa Fans, my point is they never learn, the law state that the pitch is private property anyone going on the pitch is trespassing, god knows if that young lad can claim, I hope so ,but its down to the club to have dealt with that disruption, police and stewards should be ashamed.

        1. They should Bill, it seems there were no where enough stewards given the occasion.

  24. i don’t think that we will get away Scot free for the pitch invasion it all depends on the refs & police reports and as from the footage we have seen they were all made to look a useless it could result in a poor opinion of events with the penalty ultimately being thrown out of the cup

Let them get in with it. If they did ban us so what. No other club would take our place and wouldn’t be the same. If Liverpool win today they will be kept apart from utd/arse as London media want that as a final. We won’t win against those teams anyway the ref will make sure of that imo. As for semi being played at wembley it’s ridiculous football fans should boycott semi imo until they start having it at neutral venues. Wembley us sterile stadium with the biggest rip of prices ever
