The state of Midlands footy

Ok, the truth is it’s a bit of a nothing post, just something aimed at reminding you that we are still actually here.

We’ve got the World Cup to talk about and it has indeed been brilliant up until now, the disgraceful Hondurans apart; but apart from Vlaar playing a blinder the other night (disregard what Oohah says, although that’s just my opinion), there’s nothing really going on at the Villa to talk about.
Even the papers are struggling to find anything of interest to comment on, which given their propensity for printing utter rubbish says it all.

So I thought I’d expand things a little bit, seeing as where I’m working, there’s a good mix of club supporters.

While the Wolves fan I speak to is understandably quite happy, he has been asking what’s going on at the Villa, the (spit) and the Baggies.
Even the Stokey I regularly chat footy with, has stopped trying to wind me up, as I think he’s realised this joke isn’t funny any more.

It’s a sad situation all round, isn’t it?

We appear to be stuck without an imminent buyer for the club, regardless of all the rumours and judging by the signings we’ve made up until now, we aren’t going to be buying any players that I want us to sign.
IE, mid twenties, up and coming and more importantly PROVEN, at some decent level. Far too expensive that, when we have an owner who’s looking to get money back in, let alone invest.
So all in all, more than depressing.

But then, just where we think things are bad, the (spit) are way worse off than us.
They’re signing players at levels even below them, on loan and it’s all doom and gloom.
The sadistic part of me thinks it’s quite funny, but when I put my sensible head back on, I just see the parallels.
We’re both seriously struggling.

And then there’s Albion’s latest appointment.
What’s that all about?
A manager who hasn’t managed since 2011 and failed abysmally in the lower leagues?
How does that even get him in the running for a Premier league club?
And on a rolling 12 month contract, at that?
It hardly inspires confidence, does it?

And we thought Lerner was bad!

Watched the USA v Ghana match last night..

Bradley has kicked on after his brief spell with us.. he wasn’t spectacular for them last night but has been playing well for Club and Country..

Also Jermaine Jones who we were linked to ( albeit paper talk ) looked a decent player too.. someone who would improve our midfield..

there are bargains to be found at World Cup.. shame we have next to no money what so ever to manoeuvre..

Agreed Lionhart and as much as I find it difficult to say, the Yankee doodle dandees have come on leaps and bounds as a team. They look a decent side. That match was non stop start to finish and they ore than held there own against what the majority thought would be a comfortable Dana victory.

Alejandro Bedoya looks proper decent, plays at Nantes in France, someone we should be looking at to be honest, if Le Nouveaucastle don’t get there first. As you say, bargains a plenty.

        Le Nouveaucastle..

        LOL… 🙂

Diamond never suits Bradley, he was our worst midfielder for 70 minutes because he likes the space and to spray passes to his team, not these 3-4 yard passes because there’s 4 midfielders right next to each other. He’s simply so much better when it’s just him and Jones in midfield. I’d love him back, his time in Italy did wonders for him.

We were terrible for the most part last night, well you know, the usual, used to it mainly because it was a Lambert style of play, but the defense did quite well.

  2. http://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/topics/ron-vlaar-quizzed-on-aston-villa-drink-culture-says-he-had-to-ign bit of an unusual comment here wonder how true and at what stage the drinking culture is at

Yeah I read that BB. Couldn’t make up my mind what it meant. The language suggests it may be a misinterpretation but its a bit worrying.

      OohAhPaulMcGrath

True mate. Have you watched vlaar making his usual clanger today. Very luck oz didn’t score from it. Must be great for him to play with Rvp, AR as eider etc instead of agbonlahor, wrimann and kae ffs. Hopefully he will be of to utd. Btw what a goal by Cahill

  6. Andrew avatar

We were supposed to be relegated every season for 4 seasons now by Christmas… So I highly doubt we’ll again be relegated by Christmas.

        1. Andrew avatar

Oh, alright. Realistic. Claiming we’ll be relegated every summer makes you realistic. Laughable at best.

            OohAhPaulMcGrath

Come on Andrew wev not been far of for past few seasons eventually it will happen and luck will run out

          2. Andrew avatar

No such thing as luck but if that’s what you need to believe to have a clueless negative view on everything, no one’s gonna stop you.

        2. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

So true villa 1996 eventually it will catch up with us. Lerner bs is still fooling fans I’m still not convinced we are really up for sale officially we but unofficially we are not. Makes sense means Lerner can rape the club on the cheap for another season and keep lamberk in the process. Genius

        3. I have to agree with you there villa 1996, your bullshit is all your own!

  7. Badger123 avatar
    Badger123

    I don’t get you Oohah.
Why would Vlaar be off to Utd, if he’s as shit as you make out?

    1. Andrew avatar

Funny thing is, is out of every Dutch CB, Vlaar’s the least likely. I mean Van Gaal likes a young player still, yes Vlaar’s been very good, but we have a very good chance of keeping him, unless Atletico sell Miranda/Godin and decide Vlaar’s worthy of La Liga champions. Maybe Spurs, but other than that, I have no fear of losing him no matter how good he plays.

      1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
        OohAhPaulMcGrath

I think send-dross was bought as his replacement. One useless twat for another makes sense

        1. Andrew avatar

Hahahahaha, oh. Yes, Senderos to replace Vlaar, makes sense. Not that Lambert wanted experience, we’re replacing Vlaar.

          No, you never make sense.

    2. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Because of van gaal old pals act. He would be ok as a squad player on the cheap for them. I’m not saying he’s shit necessarily I’m saying he’s very average

      1. Andrew avatar

And that just proves how much you know. “Very average”… Lol. Yes, so average.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

so you think vlaar is above average

          1. DSVilla avatar
            DSVilla

Of course he is. You and I are nearer average than Vlaar. Vlaar may not be the best in the world but he is an excellent defender. To argue otherwise is ludicrous. As for “Van Gaal would want Vlaar because of old pals act” that is even worse. Oh yes, top manager puts his reputation on the line at one of the world’s biggest clubs and signs average players just because they’re mates.

I don’t mind that you are negative. You have a perfect right to be given the demise of the club. At least make sense though.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

I just don’t rate vlaar he does play ok at times but you just know he’s going to drop a bollock at some point just like dunne

          2. DSVilla avatar
            DSVilla

Thats a problem with being a defender. Make a mistake and concede a goal or at least a chance. Name me a defender who doesn’t. Cahill dropped a clanger last night. Is he crap?

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

That’s not the point. Yes every defender makes a mistake even kompany, Cahill, Terry etc. The difference is our defenders make unforced errors and make mistakes more regularly than most other defenders

  8. Badger123 avatar
    Badger123

Bloody hell, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea in September and the same three in the same order in January?
That’s a bit of a scary fixture list, if you ask me.
I hope we’re in a decent position come April, as we might have the stuffing totally knocked out of us in that month.

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Don’t forget city and Everton. Makes no difference we have to play all teams at some point and we always seem to get at least one or two bonus wins v these teams as we can play them on the counter home and away

  9. Chile looking so impressive again. what I would give to have medel bossing our midfield next year . Proper leader.

    1. Andrew avatar

Medel would be amazing. He’s even proving to be incredible at CB tonight.

I’d want their manager too, he just allows them to play, they’re showing some incredible passion and they don’t look like stopping.

      1. Thats a tad naive Andrew, RW

scilachii, the various Dioufs from Senegal etc etc, playing for national pride in a world cup in in your native continent or climate is not a definitive guide to buying a player.

Bossing our midfield? like he bossed it for Cardiff all season before they got relegated?
no thanks .. I seen him play 3 times in the Prem last season, one of those was against villa, and sorry nope .. he is the typical angry south american “enforcer” .. undisciplined tactically and in the tackle, as likely to get sent off than save a game.
He also just ill-equipped for the premiership pace. he is just not a premier league player.
He cost Cardiff 11m all he enforced is the notion that he is far from amazing.

        1. Andrew avatar

I’ll admit I didn’t watch him more than twice at Cardiff, and he was okay at best, but I watched him a lot at Sevilla and was a big fan of his. I try not to judge big signings at failing clubs too heavily when they get relegated because the rest of his team bar their goal keeper was AWFUL and I’d be willing to get him the chance at Villa Park. I mean we have a lot of undisciplined midfielders, in fact all of them are, so why not get someone better than what we have?

        2. Andrew avatar

Plus, they beat Spain and Australia (who the latter have impressed everyone) and did very well, bar beating Cahill in the air, which no one does anyways. So it wasn’t some random Diouf’s of Senegal. And he’ll no doubt play well against the Netherlands.

        3. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

Sounds about the right standard for us then

        4. Surely naïve is writing off a player who has just starred in the world cup and shut out Spain playing out of position. And your judgement is based on 3 games – were you really watching him that closely? – and by stereotyping him based on nationality and blaming him for Cardiff’s relegation.
Likely to get sent off? 0 Reds last year, despite his reputation, and less yellows than at least 5 Villa players,
Most Cardiff fans I know rate Medel, Marshall and Caulker as the only reason they weren’t relegated months earlier – Cardiff went down due to a crack pot owner who sacked a good manager, appointed a YTS as head of scouting, brought in an untried manager and a dozen new players.
Over priced at £11m definitely, but will fetch about the same again and will end up leaving for a much bigger club than Cardiff – and Villa sadly.

  10. are we sold yet

I’m hearing by August 1st…. Arison’s still the strongest linked.

      1. ifiruledtheworld avatar
        ifiruledtheworld

It’d be amazing if Arison was the new owner.. although I feel he wouldn’t be completely focused on the Villa with his current venture in sports..

        1. Andrew avatar

Same was said about Liverpool’s new owner. I think he’d work well for Villa. Was told we won’t sign anyone till the World Cup’s over, and a few of our targets are playing there now so hell, we might even have money before the sale.

          1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
            OohAhPaulMcGrath

Yep I can see Messi and Ronaldo flying over my house en route to VP on a flying pig!!

          2. Andrew avatar

Typical stupid response I’d expect from you.

      2. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
        OohAhPaulMcGrath

Yawn no chance we are unofficially not up for sale Andrew. It’s all bs to sell STs and run the club on a shoestring for another year without the fans hassling him or lamberk genius

        1. Andrew avatar

          Complete garbage as per usual.

          1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
            OohAhPaulMcGrath

why is it garbage because i dont agree with you!!

        2. Andrew avatar

Now lets think about this LOGICALLY. Randy Lerner comes out and claims we’re up for sale. So what you claim he officially did, is not put us up for sale, and in fact is trying to get people to buy season tickets, despite most people I’ve talked too who weren’t going too before he put it up for sale, said they still won’t buy one until it’s officially sold. So what you’re claiming is, the what, 1000 at most season tickets sold because he “put it up for sale” is really the only reason he put us up for sale? Season tickets that pay for absolutely notta anymore? Maybe pay for a couple office people’s salary AT MOST that 1000 season tickets, at most, but probably not. He’s going to LIE to the fans, for a few season tickets? If that actually makes sense to you… Then I bloody quit reading what you type.

          1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
            OohAhPaulMcGrath

I take your point but dont forget it will help merchandise sales and also they still want fans at vp supporting the team empty seats is depressing. I think we will still end up selling 20,000 or so Sts which is about normal and still average 36,000 imo. Which is a lot more fans than the club deserve.

  11. VillaAwayInDiv3 avatar
    VillaAwayInDiv3

Yes Man Utd in Dec and Swans around Xmas break……..no such thing as crap fixtures as its just 20 teams playing each other twice…..not us having to play the top 4 about 9 times……

Dont eye any defenders from the world cup as they are all crap….thats why the matches are generally good to watch….some crap shooting as well…lol

Spain looked as likely to score tonight as we did at West Ham in the opener the other year…..talk about no plan B….no passion or guile …all they did was pass pass pass.

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

So true most teams in wc don’t defend well but are good going fwd. much better for the neutral. Even England looked good going fwd. good job mourinho isn’t an international manager he would park the bus even if they were 5 nil up with 10 secs left!

      1. You certainly know how to wind them up Oohah, I’m not a Lambert fan but I think he knows now he has to Change the way he’s been thinking of late, hard games to start and his jobs on the line. Time will tell two windows to go , and none of us knows what the hells going on, ho happy days.

  12. lol 🙂

i once thought like oohah my pint pots always half empty 🙁 ,lerner does want out and will sell, keeping villa ticking over to collect tv sound ideal, cos he can lower the blow on his own loses and the guys stands 2 lose a fortune.but i believe the guy does care, hes just has made bad decisions, anybody makes a decent offer with good intentions and he’ll be well rid of us.
i hope the 1st of august is correct cos we don’t want the uncertainty to drag on through our new campaign

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Agree Nath he wins either way if he can keep us up on the cheap and sell next year that suits him fine. Though he has to be careful if we go down then he will lose money big time. I actually think next season will be a carbon copy of this one so pointless even bothering

    1. For you Oohah, pigs might fly. 🙂

Ha ha good one Bill. Prediction for tonight I say 3.1 or 3.0 to England. Should be a formality

        1. I’ll go for that Oohah, I’m in for 3 -1 England, just seeing what Rooney going to do he’s been shit for a while would you say.?

  13. What a prat of an England manager we have, playing 3 glory hunters up front a man out of form, two backs that make idiotic mistakes, and tells us they know what they have to do, he’s as bad as Lambert. Knows sod all about the game. I said 3 -1 England, changed my mind 3-1 Uruquay.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

Well I really thought we’d do it Andrew and were hot favourites. Fair play to Suarez he was the difference without him I think we would of won

          1. Andrew avatar

Probably would’ve. Can’t say England were hot favorites, but favorites nonetheless. I’m gonna laugh if Italy and Costa Rica draw tomorrow. Italy winning will be huge, though Costa Rica’s goal difference would be a problem for England, as will Uruguay going full steam ahead v Italy.

Honestly can’t see England staying in it anymore.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

What are the odds on us finishing in top 2 now Andrew?

              OohAhPaulMcGrath

So we are 250/1 against qualifying?

          3. Andrew avatar

I know Skybet has it at 5/1, so I honestly think he was a bit off. Italy’s I believe 1/11, Costa Rica are 5/6 and Uruguay are 1/1

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

Blimey odds well stacked against us. I think we can beat costa and more than likely Italy will beat both teams imo

  15. Badger123 avatar
    Badger123

We took it to Italy and did well.
So why go back to playing our usual rubbish, where our defence is constantly caught out?

Gerrard is finished and how many times did Rooney fall over/slip?
Totally disgusted with Hodgson, who I thought might have more balls.

It seems we might still be able to qualify, after losing two.
    That’s so bent, it’s a joke, imo.

    1. My argument is that we have forwards that are glory hunters and don’t bring other players into the game, Sterling is two in experience a player to be considered as a first pick, I want to win on my own player, Welbeck, Sturidge , all players that cannot pass when they should, as for our Rooney he’s on a bad patch, Yes Gerrard had his day so why are we running with has been, tells me we are being conned with talk like the player’s know what they have to do, and the don’t. That to me was a disgrace of an England team.

    2. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

You have to remember the advertisers/sponsers put those 2 jokers in their ads etc so they have to play dosnt matter who’s manager we always pick the sky 4 players who have won us precisely nothing

          OohAhPaulMcGrath

Ps also u can’t legislate for Gerrard making 2 clangers

        3. Andrew avatar

Actually gonna agree with Oohah, not English and not a fan, but Hodgson has little to nothing to answer for. Bar maybe subbing Rooney off far earlier or pushing him central against Italy as he couldn’t handle two quick players in Candreva and Darmian who were never even tested defensively, he picked England’s best players and I don’t think any manager would’ve done any different or better. Maybe not bring Lampard and bringing someone else, but the thing England needs is either 1. To play like Liverpool and press, press, press really hard when they lose the ball, which neither Gerrard nor Henderson did and they were largely at fault for England being awful, or two, ask every single EPL manager to try and develop an actual English DM. A real DM, a De Jong DM with a little better passing. Maybe like an Inler or Behrami type, Vidal, De Rossi, something similar. Probably won’t be as good, but they need one as that defense is good enough maybe bar Johnson, but they had NO cover whatsoever.

          1. Andrew avatar

And honestly, he made England far more entertaining than any manager in the past decade.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

Agree going forward we look a lot better to be fair.

Agreed. And as I see Gerrard and Lampard retiring from international duty after the World Cup, be interesting to see who they bring in their place. I mean England have like 4 DM’s, Barry (aging but I’d have him back at Villa instantly), Noble, Parker (aging) and Cork who I wouldn’t mind at Villa, if he could replicate his Southampton form, but midfield could be a worry for England unless the likes of Barkley, U-25 English midfielders don’t look promising, other than Chalobah. Neither do CB’s too be fair. The likes of Terry, Ferdinand, Carragher, even Lescott are above what England are producing right now, maybe bar Cahill. I mean England’s future CB partnership could be Smalling-Jones, although I see it as Jones-Stones, but they have no depth there either.

  16. Andrew avatar

And as sad as it makes me, Cahill has been England’s best player this World Cup. He’s learned a hell of a lot from Terry and he’s become one of the best CB’s in the EPL.

Agreed great decision by MON to sell him and keep zat shite!! You couldn’t make it up

      1. Andrew avatar

One of the many jokes of MON.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

MON is a joke makes you wonder about certain alleged stories about him

          1. Andrew avatar

He’s doing no better for Ireland than anyone else did either.

              OohAhPaulMcGrath

True he did worse than Bruce at Sunderland to. Complete myth he ruined our one and only change of cracking top 4. Could be another 30-40 years at least before we get a chance again

    2. DSVilla avatar
      DSVilla

Cahill has been tremendous but he was caught out by that second goal for Uruguay. Selling him was one of many mistakes MON made. Just goes to show that even good players make mistakes – Like Vlaar for instance.
As for England, i have been pretty relaxed watching them as I didn’t expect us to get out of the group. It’s hard to see us beating Costa Rica. The team has performed well in bits, but Sturridge is a legend in his own mind. Not a team player IMHO. Plenty of talent but is too selfish and keeps making the wrong decisions. We lack a bit of real quality, and certainly don’t have anyone “world class”.

      1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
        OohAhPaulMcGrath

Agree about Sturridge thought he did well v Italy but was awful at times yesterday. Though to be fair you and me would look good if we had Suarez playing alongside us!

        1. DSVilla avatar
          DSVilla

No he would look even better because we would be so bad!

Im not sure what is more depressing, the thought of england going out in the first round or having to start thinking about Villa again!

Both not looking fwd to next season one bit

  18. Andrew avatar

Excited by next season, but then I personally think we’ll get taken over, though I don’t think we’ll spend too much in the summer, Lambert will be given till January and we’ll see then. Or maybe that’s my dream.

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

That’s why I can’t get excited knowing that lambert will still be here. He plays awful football just as bad as mcleish yet everyone says give him a chance etc whereas mcleish could of win the league and we would of been on his bk

      1. Andrew avatar

I agree, I dislike Lambert too, but I still am excited. Unfortunately he will stay till at least January.

Not looked here all week and reading that oohah now thinks Lerner falsely putting the club up for sale is a huge ploy to sell season tickets……I’m rolling around laughing here….Funniest fan site ever.

On another note, Jefferson rumour back out as apparently we’ve told Bendtner £14k PW or F-Off …… And of course he thinks he’s worth £400k pw…!!!….So goodbye Nicklas.

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

No it’s not just to sell STs it’s so he can run the club on a shoestring for yet another and get away with it. Get ur facts straight

      1. Andrew avatar

That’s not a fact though, that’s an opinion.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

Well first of all send dross couldn’t start in a poor Swiss defence. He comes on at 0.0 and it’s now 2.0. He even look like Ron vlaar

          1. Andrew avatar

He wasn’t at fault for the 2-0, Djourou was, their RB was, he wasn’t. He was hardly at fault for any of the goals tonight, Djourou was at fault for every goal, as was their pitiful goal keeper.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

He was for their 4th he looked totally lost and the fact he wasn’t first choice for a defence as shit as that says it all. Dross by name, dross by nature

          2. Andrew avatar

Other than their 4th goal, but much like our problem, their midfield got overran with said ease. Although that is why Napoli want rid of all 3 of Behrami, Inler and Dzemaili as they’re not near top class. Our midfield’s even worse.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

So he will fit in nicely with us another shite player to add to the shite we already have. My mate an arsenal st holder still can’t believe we signed arsenal celebrated when they sold hi,m

          3. Andrew avatar

And I have an Arsenal mate that thought he was quite good on his day, and if his mentality’s correct, he’ll do very well for us, but if he has another break down like after the game v Drogba, we could be in trouble. But then I don’t think he’s first choice and it’ll be Vlaar and Okore.

          4. Andrew avatar

Being first choice doesn’t mean a lot. They picked Djourou to be first choice, and he’s worse than Senderos. That simply means the manager has his own favorites. Hell, Schar is the best Swiss CB going (and one I’d love at Villa) and he wasn’t even picked, which is garbage.

  21. New Regime avatar
    New Regime

senderos is shite swiss defence has let in 3 bloody goals since hes beeen onthe field and he’s gonna be the stronghold of our defence. vlaar will probably be off to pastures new because villa are a selling club. so we will have senderos clarke baker and an unroven okore brilliant stuff to look forward to. we will be bottom of the table after 6 weeks of the new season with 0 points

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Spot on send putting the dross back to villa

      1. New Regime avatar
        New Regime

        the dross never left pal

  22. i repeat the question who has villa sold that hasn’t asked to leave

    1. New Regime avatar
      New Regime

albrighton because were poor and the rest are unsellable because they cant kick a football properly in the right direction vlaar will go because hes on the big stage and looking okay there will be buyers and well sell him

    2. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Bowery, Albrighton. Just because a player asks to leave dosnt mean we have to let them esp if under contract

      1. Andrew avatar

When you’re offered big money though and they push for the move, you either tell them no and they have a giant hissy fit, start crying and causing problems, or you sell them off.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

Fine then let them rot in the reserves especially in World Cup year when they need to be playing.

          1. Andrew avatar

No business man’s gonna do that… Nor should they, if they don’t wanna be here, you sell them. Simple as that.

Man oh man, it’s June 20th, we haven’t had an official bid (although I’ve heard differently, and it got turned away but then the media knows very little if anything) and we’re already screwed. Never knew the media was be all end all. There’s only person I’ll ever believe on news, and that’s IncogAVFC, not the BirminghamMail.

      1. You haven't heard differently avatar

Well Andrew IncogAVFC is after tweeting that there is no sale in sight, pretty much agrees with the Birmingham Mail..

        1. Andrew avatar

Ah, okay. I personally don’t have him followed on twitter as I don’t have twitter, so didn’t know, facebook pages tend to post his tweets and finally got a friend to follow him but he didn’t mention that yet.
