Southampton 6 – 1 Villa; Guaranteed safe, but back down to earth with a bump

This was another game that I didn’t get to watch because of work, so I can’t comment on the match, but by the sounds of it, it was probably a good one to miss.
Having had a very quick glance around, it seems that the defensive part of the side had a total shocker and this wasn’t helped by some very gung-ho tactics that didn’t get changed, at least in the first half.

I had a quick look for the score after about twenty minutes of the game and was stunned to see that we’d conceded a hat-trick in just three minutes. At any level you care to mention, that is absolutely awful and I find myself wondering what on earth happened?
Roll on Match of the day.

Still, with me not having seen the game, I’m not in a position to comment, so I won’t.
Hence this one is about the positive side of things.
While it’s easy to rant and rave after a bad performance, we have to bear in mind that the players who lost today have done pretty well over the last few weeks.
Whether today was a result of a side that was over-confident, I really can’t say, but I was talking to a workmate earlier today and his opinion was that Southampton were about due to give someone a thrashing. He certainly called that one right.

So what’s the good news?
As we all know we’re safe, which at the moment is the main thing.
And Benteke scored again, albeit an absolute token gesture goal. It could have been worse, in that we might have got none at all, is the point. I suspect I’m perhaps clutching at straws there, to be honest.

Ok, it’s scant consolation and doesn’t bode particularly well for the run-up to the cup final, especially when we face a tough Burnley side, who although relegated, will not lay down and die for us.
But Sherwood said we’d win some and lose some. The problem is I didn’t see a 6-1 whupping being part of that.

While today is very disappointing, there may be something good to come out of it.
There’s no way we will be complacent against Arsenal in the final, after this result.

Trying to be positive; this was a reality check.

Rather now than against Arsenal in two weeks time.

And I do remember when Sherwood arrived many people reckoned we’d get the occasional real stuffing from time to time, as the down-side to the scoring and winning games.

Dalglish went to see Walker with a view to signing a young player making waves in France, the player a young Zinidine Zidane. Walkers reply – “Why do we need Zidane when we’ve got Sherwood”.

We stayed up and Sherwood deserves a medal.
I was at todays game and our defending in the first half was poor.
But remember this is not his team he has not been able to make one addition.
He galvanised a bunch of players that were destined for the drop and somehow managed to get us enough points to stay up by playing well when many on here (including myself) thought we were doomed.
Plus to the F.A. cup final.

Why worry about the result, one off shocks like this happen, Chelsea lost to Bradford 4-2 and the next day nobody cared. We move on and prepare for Burnley. we’re safe that was Tims objective and he completed it nothing else really matters. We will 100% give Arsenal a game and I personally believe we will beat them.

None of us like losing; and 6-1 would normally be a humiliation that could get a manager sacked!
But in the context of the last few seasons at VP, all that matters is that we don’t have to even think about the Burnley game now as a relegation decider; Villa will still be in the big-time for another season, so no more of the ‘cup or stay-up?’ dilemma.

Just looking back to February, I think we were dead in the water with Lambert, and would have been in the same position as Burnley or QPR are in today if the club hadn’t made the change then, and there’s no way we’d have a cup final to anticipate as a bonus.

On the whole I really like sherwood, got us playing with some flair and will drop players, well done to him and thd team coz if lambert would have been in charge we would already been down. Go for it in the cup final and can start to prepare for next year, can’t wait to see what sherwood can do with a full pre season and his own signings, bright future ahead!!

TS hasn’t moaned about the injury list, he has got on with playing the fit players and slotting them into the roles that needed filling. Success comes of playing to your strengths and disguising your weaknesses. The starting point is too look at your opponents and the players you have and assess those weaknesses. This is where TS failed today – ignore the individual errors, the setup and tactics (a high back line, Hutton as left wingback) were wrong against 3 fast forwards.

Our back line is held together with duct-tape. Clark is quick, Richardson and Sissoko are quick, and Sanchez does cover his back four. Today none of the first three I mentioned were available and I am not sure if Sanchez is crocked, but he wasn’t chosen. The rest of our defence including Vlaar Senderos Ocore Hutton Lowton and Baker are slow. The only way to play Southampton with today’s line up was to sit right back on our 18 yard line and wait for Saints to push forward leaving space on the field between their back line and keeper. Instead as you will see on MOTD the space was between our back three and Given.

Outside of the defence the other major flop was NZog, nowhere near partnering Benteke up front he had one of his anonymous away-days. We cannot afford no-show-away players like him.

So who’s fault is it dropping Gil out of contention completely. Also the players that are injured are no better than what we’re out there today. He’s kept us up but so did lamberk and mcleish means nothing. Your spot on re them should of defended 18 yd line that’s exactly how we will play v arsenal. Next weeks game should be Sherwoid experimenting for cup final. The whole defence is a joke and pray that we sell vlaar in summer

Agree with Originallondonlion. We played a flat defence too high up the pitch with no pace. Suicidal against a team like the Saints with speedy forwards. Would be equally suicidal against the Arsenal with their speed merchants up front, but hopefully we’ll not make the same mistake! (Incidentally, seem to remember the Gunners scoring three rapid fire goals against us in similar fashion earlier in the season).

I think we can all breathe properly again but what’s going to happen through the summer with these supposed bids. Will Sherwood get to stay as he’s proven he can rally the troops properly to compete in games and win I hope he stays. Will the club get a new manager, owner ect ect.We have had so many uncertain years it would be nice to get a decent season behind us without having to worry about shifting ourselves again with relegation.Im going to be optimistic about what’s to come as it’s better that than the opposite. On the game it’s one to forget WTF was going on out there nobody knows we were lucky Spurs beat Hull.Im sick and tired of us letting ourselves down at the moment we should be taking our chance to go forward.I know same old Villa it’s about time AVFC decided we are not for the taking and do the taking.Thank god that’s over and on to the part of the season that I really like which is the transfer window and players coming in lets hope there good ones.If we win the FA cup that will shine up what can go down as a poor poor season until Sherwood turned up and he turned things around.Phew UTV

if hull would of won we would have had a panic next week. if we would of lost by one or two fair enough but to let in six should really be a result that takes ages to get out of our system.
remember chelsea 8-0 it took about two months to get over.
and dont say thats lambert, once any team gets a hammering its hard to get over. so hopefully hulls result has helped that and i expect changes or rests for next week.

Right, just back in from a day on the lash that involved the lows of getting battered by Southampton and the highs of being safe – I’m delighted. I like Tim Sherwood, he has a can do attitude and if we lose a few while trying to win I’ll be happy.

OohAah, you’ve become a parody of yourself. I know your “role” on here is to be the moany / negative one bit quite frankly you’re painfully transparent and I suspect you are a closet Liverpool / Arsenal fan and would hate it if we won the FA Cup as it would distort your big (Sky) vs smaller club complex.

And winning the FA cup is nothing to do with sky 4 even Wigan and Portsmouth have win it in recent years winning the FA cup does not define you as a big team.

Fair play – however, confirming premier league safety was a massive positive (it’s disappointing that we are having to celebrate that), as I said there were highs and lows yesterday. There is an air of optimism around our club that hasn’t been there for a good few years and I genuinely believe we can give anyone a game – what a contrast to a few months back.

I’m very interested to see what Sherwood will do in a transfer window, and how he performs at the start of a season when it’s not about galvanising the squad in adversity. You can say the jury’s out, but I for one am more than prepared to believe for now.

So we got beat 6-1; embarrassing yes but looking at the last 13 games under TS it’s the first one where we failed to compete and can honestly say we deserved nothing. Sh*t happens but I can’t suddenly change from being positive under TS anymore than one good result under Lambert meant we had ‘turned a corner’.

Nobody remembers yesterday’s results so just enjoy that we’re safe and have an FA Cup Final to look forward to.

After that of more importance is the ownership of our beloved club, who will be our manager; what funds will he have to invest in the team and how they are spent.

Watched the game yesterday from sunny Bulgaria, which was an utter shambles, very embarrassing, the players should be ashamed of themselves. The managers comments after the game summed it up when he said the whole playing and coaching staff plus management let the club down. It would be a nice gesture if all staff and players donated their weeks wages each to ACORNS because they certainly did not earn it. I hope this gets some air time and the pressure is put on them as it is a small snip-it from their vast wealth.
