I’d like to say I’m glad.
But the truth is I’m not.
We now have to pretty much start from scratch, with a new manager having to get to know the players and all that involves.
That said, Roberto Di Matteo had to go, because it simply wasn’t working.
And I have to doff my cap at how quickly Dr Xia and the board have reacted.
Which tells me that they’d already done the background work in implementing a plan B.
And I’d expect the announcement of a new manager very shortly, which tells me it’s going to be Steve Bruce.
Unless we’re going to use the international break to negotiate with another club as we pinch their manager.
All interesting, but sadly, still turbulent times.
Here we go again then.
Let’s hope we make the right choice this time, eh?
Poaching another clubs manager could be time consuming aswell as expensive time we certainly don’t have.
When will this end, it seems we are in a spiral of despair and instability !!! The Dr chose RDM and that decision was wrong, will he get the next appointment right…. God only knows !
Interesting statistic on the BBC Sport website -:
The last 19 months since Lambert’s exit have proved particularly severe:
Marshall/Marshall: 7 days, P1 W1
Sherwood: 250 days, P28 W10 D2 L16
MacDonald: 9 days, P2 L2
Garde: 148 days, P23, W3, D7, L13
Black: 65 days, P7 W0, D1 L6
Di Matteo: 124 days, P12, W1, D7, L4.
I say put Scott and Andy Marshall in charge !!!!!
Steve Bruce has got more experience than this lot put together.
I know he is ex blues but we have to put this behind us he knows what he is doing and is a good manager.
I would be surprised if they don’t have a clear idea who they want and Bruce would be the ‘easiest’ option. Say what you like about him he’s a decent manager who would get these players performing better than RDM.
RDM says things were worse / more complicated than he thought….can’t see this….new owner…billions of cash…new manager…mostly new players…his players…new coaching staff…his staff….so should not have been a surprise to him.
Please not Bruce!! on a hiding to nothing from the start. The fans will hate that appointment. We should learn from the appointment of McLeish. No ex blues! Think we’re going to struggle now this season through instability alone. Bottom half unfortunately.
If we went for Bruce or Rowett, the moment they’d lose a game or two, they’d be called bluenoses and the whole mcleish debacle would be repeated.
Get someone fresh and enthusiastic in. Best choice would be David Wagner IMO, though I think Lee Johnson from Bristol City is a good option too.
That’s my bet, Johnson. and not a bad shout.Bruce if was to be him that wouldn’t bother me he is a good manager, problem being the hate game over Villa and Blues would no doubt come into play with fans, but having said that glad Di Matteo has gone never the man for Villa.
Lee Johnson’s a good call V1 but please Dr Xia none of the usual suspects (Bruce, McClaren, Keane, Curbishley etc.)
I’d quite like Gareth Southgate, not sure he would come to us now he’s the interim England manager
Not for me mate.
Nor me.
Yeah he wouldn’t be many peoples cup of tea granted! I really have no idea who we might get in to be honest.
Mccarthy??
Can’t see him getting on with our chairman he’s a bit of a mad one isn’t he, like Pearson.
Flores for me
Saying that he’s only just joined Espanyol
Isn’t he at Espanyol? Still if he was willing I’d be more than happy to give him a go.
Still like Rowett personally
Rowett’s a great shout and with the added bonus of really hurting them noses.
Sorry can’t see this need for Lee Johnson who in managerial terms is a novice with no promotions to his name Oldham,Barnsley under his belt, I think he’d be out his depth his still in a learning curve.if he came to us he’d have to hit the ground running the blokes still learning to walk imo
Totally agree.
Well it’s going to a very interesting appointment, a barometer of the Doc’s true ambitions and intentions for AVFC.
Like him or hate him I see Bruce being the man, unless he’s holding back waiting to see if he gets a call from London.
Gabby has seen off yet another manager !
Bar ayew & amavi I hope the new manager doesn’t use the rest of last seasons flops not just shabby
Looking at the news today sounds more like Bruce the favourite for the Job, i won’t loose sleep over that. we do need to make it soon and not later so fans can carm down.
It is right that Lee Johnson is still learning, but he’s learning fast, and not just at Bristol City. He turned around Oldham’s fortunes in a very short period, going from relegation favourites to league one safety. He then went to Barnsley who were struggling, he turned them around, and, although he’d departed for Bristol before the end of the season, it was basically his Barnsley team that won two Wembley finals, the Football league trophy and the league one play off, and that Barnsley team are still punching above their weight. Also don’t forget he comes from good management stock, his father Gary is a decent manager.
All that being said, compensation could be a stumbling block!
Bristol City are probably negotiating an improved contract with him as we speak.
Darren fergusons dad Alex was a good manager but Darren was/is crap!! Silly point to make
If you took the time read Dave.C’s comment instead of typing from the hip you’d see your just how lame your comparison is.
Dave.C’s obviously done homework and knows his subject matter unlike others.
Ridiculous comment.
I wouldn’t lose sleep if it was “Spud-face” Bruce, although personally would prefer Mick McCarthy or even “mad-dog Pearson”; just think that the players really need a hard-man [-or at least a real motivator] to get things moving.
Ordinarily I’d have said that RDM wasn’t there long enough, but his apparent lack of concern when things clearly weren’t working suggested that he really didn’t see what the problem was – and the lack of any apparent ‘urgency’ on his part made me suspect that he wouldn’t have done anything much differently for weeks to come.
Of course we look more of a shambles than ever after this quick reaction from Xia & the Board – although at least the owner does look as if he won’t let anything or anyone get in the way of his ambitions…
Plan B is already enacted with the appointment of Clarke. Temporary or not, he is a proven manager (unlike Marshall, MacDonald, Black) and I wouldn’t be surprised if the club takes their time with appointing someone new.
We have to remember Round was just appointed Technical Director and the club is set up very differently than it was even this summer. So who are some realistic names for managers who are accustom to working with Technical Directors and being part of a system? The usual names (Bruce, Pearson, etc.) would not be a good fit.
Good point, with the new set up we’re probably looking for a head coach as opposed to a manager. That would (hopefully) rule out the old tired names ike Bruce
As long as he don’t get it full time, sacked by Reading, sacked by the Baggies managed just win 38 out of 113 games the bloke is totally uninspiring – Thanks but no thanks!
He does have a poor record, but let’s give him a game or two to see what he can do. At this stage it is the best way forward without completely rocking the boat. It should be said though Lambert, Sherwood, Garde, RDM all had good records before taking over Villa.
RDM’s P45 must have been sitting on the Doc’s desk for a couple of weeks and I can’t imagine they’d have been sitting on their laurels during that period, they’d have putting the feelers out, sounding out managers drawing up short lists etc. I’d expect someone in post sooner rather than later.
I agree mate abit like Swansea they didn’t hangaround but knew of a replacement beforehand.
Giddy it’s been pretty much common knowledge he had two games to save his job.
Nor I, I’m sure there has been many internal discussions about how to go forward in the event RDM is sacked, although I do doubt how quickly Villa will be able to get in a replacement. I could be wrong, but by the sound of it there is not many, if any, managers who tick all the boxes and is currently without a job. Which mean the club will be looking to poach a manager from another club, and that will take time. Even the appointment of RDM, who was unattached, took roughly a week to complete once he was identified as the likely candidate.
Clarke is part of the problem no thanks
Savage is recommending Bruce so we definitely shouldn’t be going for him.
Would it be worth giving Clarke a go while negotiations go on? If we could see some rapid improvement over 3-4 matches then who knows?
Just a thought.
No not Clarke! Not only his he woeful he’s also the recipient of the worlds first successful charisma bye pass operation!
😀
Agreed
From what I’ve seen Clarke was sat on his bum on the bench with his arms folded while we produced some dire performances. We need someone who can inspire the team and he just doesn’t look the right man to me.
Agree completely. One of the things that disturbed me about RDM and his fellow coaches whenever I’ve seen them this season is that they were not ‘touchline’ people.
I was waiting for a bit more of a reaction from one or other of them at lots of things that weren’t going right, but they seemed to sulk – just like some of the players.
Oh what the hell lets get Kevin Mac as well and go the whole hog of employing more useless Cretans
No Clarke is a lazy unambitious option forget it
Looking at whats on offer Bruce, Wagner could be good but is still learning the ropes as a manager. The bluenose connection with Bruce was a long time ago now, Big Eck went straight from the Blues to us after relegating them, he is notorious at playing negative football.
Bruce will get us to the Prem but i am not sure he will keep us up, should be given a one year contract and big bonus if he gets us up
If RDM was turning to the chairman for motivational videos I’m sure he would of turned to Clarke for ideas possibly a case of the blind leading the blind sooner a new managers in place the better another couple of games we could be bottom of the pile if things aren’t sorted
bloody hell things move quick in football. swansea sack and hire in same day. we sack RDM which everybody knew would happen. ANY NEWS on the replacement. i aint even gonna suggest anybody. i just hope the man responsible for hiring RDM isn’t on the panel this time.
by the way on swansea sacking of the italian. i watched their last two games which they lost but they played really well. that sacking might be alittle harsh, also they must have been talking badley before they sacked the italian. dog eat dog tough business
That would be Dr T then as RDM wasn’t on anyone else’s list – allegedly
just reading the three men talk sport claim are top of list. smith bruce and clarke not the best list to start with. i haven’t a clue i know who i don’t want more than i want. how about you. which is your choice
Hasn’t dean smith ruled himself out already??? He probably knows it’s a job too big to take on
i am just catching up on whats happened, reading this sites views and newsnow
so if hes ruled himself out, does this mean the list is down two. i will check the bookmakers thats usually a good indicator
It’s far too big for him from what IV heard
