Olof Mellberg; The Viking retires

Well, I quite simply couldn’t let this one pass without a comment.
It’s as in the headline which says it all really.

Mellberg has retired and it’s a shame to my mind, as he strikes me as the last of a dying breed, in that he really loved the club.
Yes, you get that sort of attitude when you’re winning plenty, but did Mellberg actually win anything at the Villa?
I don’t recall, but whatever, his attitude to the club was never in doubt.
Who can forget his comment where he said he’d never go to Birmingham City?
Absolute class, from a Villa fan’s point of view and something that had already sealed his place in my top whatever chart of all time top Villa players.
And then, to top that, he bought a boat-load of shirts for the away fans at his last game for us.
How often do players think of the fans like that? I can’t recall another example.

And if you add the fact that he was a very, very good defender, it’s all gravy.
While many ex Villa players have been touted as good options at coach level or whatever, he is one that I genuinely would like to see come back.

Quite simply a top man and a top player from a Villa fan’s point of view.

I salute the Viking.

One of my VP heroes and I wish him all the best.. I hope we can sign him up as a Scandinavian Scout. Petrov sent us Tonev, so Mellberg has a very easy target to beat with his first recommendation.
