Man Utd 4 – 1 Villa; Rubbish defending, again.

Well, what can you say about that?
Not much, apart from the usual reason, in that we defended atrociously yet again.

Which is a shame really, because I thought we mostly held our own against what is a very average Man Utd side and although the result is there in black and white, I don’t really think it was a 4-1 type of game (if you know what I mean).

Benteke could easily have had a hat-trick and his air kick that should have been a certainty, will probably haunt him for years. That part didn’t particularly worry me though. He continually gets in the right positions and leaps like the proverbial salmon. Did you see how high he got above Vidic for that header?
No, given his age, I think he’s going to be absolutely outstanding in time and his not scoring is only a temporary thing.
Of course, we wonder where he will be when he hits top form, but that’s something that’s been much discussed and an issue I won’t pursue.

Although it was nice and warm today, I was wondering if it was about 35 degrees C at Old Trafford, as the players seemed somewhat lethargic.
Indeed the first half lacked any pace or movement on both sides, something that Villa really ought to be using to their advantage, given the youthful average age of the team.

Both sides came out looking sharper in the second half and indeed Villa looked the better side in the first 10 minutes or so until some more atrocious defending let us down yet again.
I’m not going to harp on about it, as to be honest it’s just getting boring.
I don’t know what the answer to it is either, £50 million apart.
It just sickens me that we’ve always had a good defence on the whole over the time I’ve been supporting the Villa and this lot just don’t match up.

I was speaking to a Wolves fan today and he asked me what Lambert’s remit was at the Villa.

“Is it to get rid of the over-expensive deadwood, get in a load of cheap kids and just survive in the Prem?” he asked.
“It certainly seems like it, doesn’t it?” I replied.
“That’s not good enough for a club like the Villa. Lerner needs to go”

The words rung in my ears.
This is coming from a neutral and is exactly what many Villa fans seem to be thinking.

Man Utd were there for the taking today, but we just weren’t good enough. Again.
How we’re mid table, God only knows.

  1. I started getting the faith back with our defending fuck me thats out the window now, shambolic the gd is heading in the wrong direction.we might need that at the end.are there poorer teams than us in the league i sometimes question that.onwards & hopefully not downwards.im one well fucked off fan.

      1. Agree but I will say that gabby should always have legend status at villa no matter what. Why? Because of all those great derby winners and goals v the scum. The goal line clearance from agent ridgewell and popping up the other end to send us all delirious is a great moment never to be forgot.

    1. Agree I really thought defending was sorted and keystone kops defending was a thing of the past. All their goals could of been avoided IMO. I am still not happy about Bertrand and vlaar seems to be slipping again hopefully it’s just a blip. Bacuna is simply a decent right midfielder he us not good enough to defend as a rht bk. Clarke did ok and vlaar let him down for first goal. I think our players are probably on the beach now we are 99% safe. That’s the problem when u reach the last 8 games or so with fuck all to play for we just go through the motions

  2. Even though Utd beat us, i still have to say how poor they are in comparison to the Utd team under Fergie. Which leads me onto how abysmal we are as a team, the two victories against Norwich and Chelsea were papering over the cracks of how bad this team really is. Clark is not even league one. The tactics were wrong again.

Westwood and Albrighton were good and although Tonev did his usual hoof at least he had a go. Benteke is a liability and has an overall negative impact on the team as a whole. He is lazy and rarely puts opposing defences under any impression and spends most games rolling around on the floor throwing his arms in the air. Fucked off we are really shit and tbh have been all season with the odd FA Cup giant killing performance which leaves us feeling like the project is finally working. When the reality is something very different an overall glance out our performances tells me we are lucky to be where we are and we are still close enough to be dragged into a relegation battle.

    1. Agree Morgan the unexpected fluke results v man city, Chelsea and saints are what have kept us up. Incredibly unlikely we will have such a good record again v the top 4. Anyone that things will be any different next season are sadly deluded. I say to fans support the team when we are playing but not the manager or owner they are the real problem and it’s not going to get better unless someone like city owners took us over which is as unlikely as knitting fog

  3. Another Lamberk special, 8 goals conceded in 2 games. Utter disgrace. Still the sheep will be pleased when Lerner and the other muppets on the board offer him a new deal as they can continue to suck up to him.
Makes me laugh the Villa fans who wank over Gabby and Albrighton just because they are Villa fans, they are as shit as the rest of the pathetic turds that frequent our squad, lead by the head muppet Lamberk. Yet more shame on AVFC’s proud name. Disgusting.

    1. Agree belcs but tbf I thought MA played well and easily our best forward. I’m more concerned about Benteke and those misses. All Benteke apologists whinge and say he gets no service to some extent that’s true but even when he does he fucks it up more often than not. He is becoming one of those players that need 5 chances to score 1 bit like andy cole. Nothing wrong with that if you’ve other players scoring and you play for a team like Liverpool or city who create chance after chance but we don’t create much normally. The whole squad and the club itself is rotten to the core and totally clueless about what to do about it. The supporters are just as bad with vtid and just happy to stay up. The inertia of the fans and the acceptance of our position is worrying to say the least.

  4. Oohah, that’s exactly why I made the point about Benteke.
No way will he be a 1 in 5 scorer.
He’s just going through a rough patch and you need to give him a break mate.
He is going to be a 20+ goals a season striker wherever he ends up.
And he’s easily £25 mill worth in my mind.
Put him in a decent team and he’ll score for fun.

    I forgot about Albrighton.
He reminded me of Young at his best in his crossing and it seems McLeish’s near ruining of him might be close to being undone.
Class crosser of the ball and now works hard in tracking back, imo.

    1. He’s not getting 20 this season though badger. Though still the best striker we have. Pointless discussing anyway we all know he will be of next season and who can blame him

  5. we lost 41 but benteke should have got at least 2 plus penalty when vidic fell over clarke had a free header from 6 yards out, that was with only having 9 playing because dont know what gabby or wiemen where doing it would be called fraud in most other jobs need to go wih guzan lowton vlar clarke bennet albrighton westwood bacuna delph kea benteke next week 451 no point playing bertrand no better than bennet or luna gabby only for away matches get 3 points get safe get rid lambert and crew need new start 40 million spent bar benteke only good

    1. Weimann has been a massive disappointment for me Iv always rated weimann since he came on the scene but he’s just not doing it this year no idea why though

  6. In all seriousness, agree it wasn’t a 4-1 game but just had a gut feeling we’d rue those missed chances. Albrighton carried the fight for me, some positive wing play and good crosses. Actually thought Vlarr and Clark played well, but let down by full backs. Bertrand should have pulled across one for Rooneys first and he played Fellaini onside for the third. Front 3 weren’t at the races today.

  7. Im sorry but random results like beating City and Chelsea cannoy hide the fact that we are a very poor team. We lack any structure or formation. The players look like they dont know how to play together.

Lambert is out of his depth at Villa and should not be given a new contract.

  8. It’s the first touches of the front 3 that disappoint me. On their day they can click and it looks slick when we have space to counter attack. But when they’re marked tightly it just bounces off them like a pinball machine. Feel sorry for Delph who looks for the quick 1-2 and hardly receives it back.

Weimann has gone off the boil, still all huff and puff and hard working but no finesse to match the work rate. Not the answer for the no. 10 position as I feel he lacks creativity and a final product.

Gabby frustrates me so much, pace to burn yet hardly takes on the full backs or centre half’s these days. I was willing him to just knock it past Rafael and burn him off, it’s almost like he’s lacking confidence. If he doesn’t exploit that part of his game he becomes a passenger.

Benteke is still an enigma to me, the move always seems to slow when balls are played to his feet. Granted he’s good at making a nuisance of himself and anticipating crosses. Think defenders know that if they win the aerial battle with him, that’s pretty much job done as he’s not going to threaten with the ball at his feet.

    1. First match of the season Arsenal away was arguably gabbys best game ever. He seemed to have a central role behind the forwards where he had space to run at arsenal. Which he did to great effect. Since then he’s been out back on the left where is totally ineffective. Why change what worked at arsenal.

      1. Do you think he hesitates a lot more now? I just don’t understand why he’ll run with the ball for 20-30 yards when space is in front of him, but then doesn’t accelerate past the defenders when they come out to him. Much rather play the ball square or back to a midfielder which takes the edge off the attack.

        1. It’s all about confidence but he isn’t good enough to beat players. If he comes from deep then runs at pace directly at the heart of defence he will terrorise them. Despite their hammering arsenal do have a good defence esp at home and they just couldn’t cope with if.

  9. watched mod just gets worse with watching flying after westwood goal clarkes free header from 6 yards should have made it 2 then delph does what he usually does lets his man run clarke leaves rooney to cover it bang goal.gabby gives ball away runs50 yards after it but no challenge all bacuna has to do is stand up goes diving in watch penalty by way watch what bacuna reaction second half benteke two brilliant chances throw in our right back position dont have enough players covering BASIC TRAINING watch bacuna run out shocking should have had pen whenvidic falls over benteke last goaldelph tackle why does clarke not do simple mark his man WHAT COACHING ARE THEY GETTING

  10. I think the big question is how big of a miss is Kozak? He’d have half a dozen more goals than Benteke at least by now. At least if and when he goes, we’ll have a replacement for him being signed and Kozak still who would have had us safe by now.

    1. I think kozak will be class with 2 proper wingers to feed him. Unfortunately thats not gabby & weimann. I want to see us buy a strong cm and a decent winger. Along with a whole back 4 but think thats asking to much!

      1. Still going to go out on a limb and claim we don’t need a new back 4. Maybe 2 fullbacks, but having one of the worst midfield’s in the league absolutely destroys the back 4 leaving them with no chance. I mean if the 3 guys in front of you (especially when KEA’s missing) are getting opened up with a simple pass then you’re going to be screwed from the start, and the back 4 is. However Bacuna’s not a RB, and I still don’t get why Bertrand would be such an amazing signing.

But yeah, Benteke’s replacement (if he leaves), 2 midfielders, 2 fullbacks and a winger would be a brilliant summer if ever possible as I expect Luna to make a move back home so we’ll need depth at LB anyways.

  11. Good balanced view badger and your Wolves mate is spot on, it’s Lerner doing the damage at Villa, putting the club on life support in a state of suspended animation, trouble is this could do irreparable damage if it continues over a too long a period.

  12. i don’t agree that its all Lerners fault his only problem is having Faulkner having any influence on playing matters i think he missed a trick when Houlier had to be removed if he had offered him a position of director of football with thommo doing the donkey work with the players then we could of had the beginning of a dynasty and long term planning

    1. Billy a naive view. Lerner would not have funded Houllier. Lerner dictates the spend of managers HE has decided on cheap buys low wages and to recoup his money via tv gate sponsorship money. He also employes YES men who deflect flack away from Lerner. Don’t forget Lerner employed McLeish despite two relegations and protest. Lerner has also been conspicuous by his absence. Lerner OUT. By the way AGBONLAHOR awful time to sell him. He has a big ego and is lazy. As for him being a one club player. How lucky us he? Ask why have no clubs come in for him? Lazy poor control.

      1. agree to a certain extent ted but who sold these ideas to a clueless septic fully agree on gabby though he and wieman have been the root cause of midfield/defense deficiency’s for two seasons now

    2. If Lerners only problem is faulkner then it is Lerners fault for picking him and then sticking with him

    3. Well said Billy. Fully agree as he would’ve backed Houllier and most of us know that (most of us meaning obviously someone doesn’t). I just wouldn’t want Lambert as a manager as that’s his most clueless way. We’d need a good, actually good, young manager if we had a director of football.

      1. So most of us know Lerner would have backed Houllier ?????
Ok just who are ‘most of us’?
The evidence since MON left is to the contrary with RL hell bent on recouping his money back, the money that he incidentally LOANED to the club.
And why do you think any manager they interviewed worth his salt told him to stick the job where the sun don’t shine? Because you can’t run a Premier league club on Championship finances, so carry on, stick your head in the sand and blame AMC, Lambert, Gabby, the Pope and the Queen of England for our demise but the end of the day there is only one person setting the agenda at AVFC and it isn’t any of the above.

        1. People don’t understand BWS, he’s a Yank all Yanks are ruthless in businesses, money is all they think about and power, my lads business deals 24 -7 with the twats , their workers are treated like animals, do the job or get out, he’s no different over here, your spot on that some managers walked away from him and told him to take a running jump. Bill if he cared he would do the right thing and live here, he’s quite happy to have monkeys running the club. Ellis is to blame for our plight.

          1. Bill P you know what’s coming next mate, we could been owned by a Carson Yeung or Vincent Tan and various other nightmare scenarios well breaking news people – we’re in one.
And for all Randy’s ‘Nice Bloke’ persona his so called investment in Villa is actually Villa building up debt and is no different to the Glazers at Man U, to call it investment is disingenuous at best.

            1. Well said BWS I say vote with our wallets and get these clowns out. The club is going nowhere. Look at Liverpool they Havnt spent as much as mon did and they are champions elect. Joke

          1. And where’s he now?
F**ked off to Fulham that’s where so we don’t have to pay his wages.we hardly built a team around him did they? In fact they sold all the players that supplied him shoved him in the reserves and did their utmost to discredit the bloke.

Also it appears the penny’s dropped with some Villa heavyweights, this is from Villa historian John Lerwill –
“But it’s Villa that is the biggest club yet is being treated like a lame pussycat by its owner”

So Billy if you want to believe everything’s Rosy at VP carry on, see you in the Championship cause that’s where this his heading, ask any Coventry fan keep flirting with relegation and you will get dragged in it’s only a matter of time.

          2. don’t believe every thing is rosy were in trouble again but a defeatist attitude is is fatal because it soon spreads and your on a downward spiral, and there’s far to much negativity around villa park at the moment check out other sites they are nowhere as doom ridden as some posters on here. agree the treatment handed out to bent, given et-al was/is disgusting and that will come back to haunt us one day

          3. Billy mate, I haven’t got involved in the Lambert / Player slagging off for a good while but the downward spiral is a fact, it’s happening in front of your eyes, from Champions League hopefuls to relegation fodder and the buck stops with Lerner.
            .

          4. i know the buck stops with Lerner but hes supplied funds as and when required i think the advice he receives is flawed while i agree with the vision of Lambert he hasn’t the skill or experience to pull it off there’s no plan or style to our football which is why the big guns of the league cant play against us this is not going to be an easy fix whoever is chairman my opinion lamberts time was up Christmas where they should of backed him or sacked him faulkener is not ruthless enough for the position he holds and this position is the one that should be settled first

  13. Ted i think gabby probably benteke know if their fit they play, possibly going to their heads abit.if i play shite today don’t matter i’ll still be starting next match.totally wrong imo, some bench warming time wouldn’t go a miss.who would replace them though?my god we’ve really got strength & depth ain’t we now lol.

  14. Anyone of the youngsters who show some commitment. Time to sell Agbonlahor. As for Lambert after watching him hiding away, no motivation no idea. He also needs to go. One man is to blame for all this dross and that’s Lerner. Lerner out.

  15. Unless of course your boss was so awful he used his employees to deflect and take the criticism. Having a poor manager and awful chief exec. takes the fans frustrations away from Lerner.

  16. We have exciting young talent like Burke and Robinson scoring quite a few lately in the u21 league and could be our future stars and yet Weimann continues to play dreadful but still starts every game, same for Gabby he needs a rest. Why don’t we give a chance to our home grown talent? We can see if they’re good enough over the next 7 games. Liverpool did it with Sterling and WBA did it with Berahino. We are so predictable with squad selection and the way we play it’s just so boring being a Villa fan.

  17. Please please would someone be so kind as to explain WHY the press still refuse/decline to give any coverage to how poor Lambert is or How Lerner is destroying the club? Why no articles calling for sackings Lerner out?why no articles publishing the frustrations of a Villa fans? What happened to a free objective press. If the club are being obstructive and censoring reports surely any journalist worth their professional ethics would exploit this to their own gains. Where are the journalist who want to report the fans views? And expose what’s happening?

    1. Ted at least it seems John Lerwill has had the balls to come out and nail his colours to the mast – “But it’s Villa that is the biggest club yet is being treated like a lame pussycat by its owner”

  18. ted as much as you want Lambert/Lerner gone as of most people on this site, your still a minority im afraid and news papers media only report what they have meddled with e.g. benteke to any team other than villa the so called bomb squad the p.r. at villa needs a massive overhaul as does everything else

    1. Billy I think the majority voice now want Lerner and Lambert gone. No longer can cheap buys awful quality be addressed by the club response “transition period” it’s now obvious players aren’t good enough manager can’t motivate and lacks tactical awareness. More importantly an owner who is only interested in making money for himself at the clubs expense an owner who has no interest and no support for the club and no understanding of fans. Treats fans with contempt. An owner who measures success finishing 4th from bottom. An owner who employed Alex McLeish. Surely it’s an article journalists should print?

  19. we have the under18s plating some really good skilful football with scouts coming from all over the globe to watch them then we have the ultra successful under 21s steamroller but hang on arn’t they playing a different style to the first team maybe this is why no one can step up and end up out on loan we keep hearing were in transition but this needs to start at the bottom up with a definite style of football that all grades of the club can identify with so no matter who is suspended/ injured a ready made replacement are within the ranks

  20. Ted – write the article and submit it to wherever you’d like to read something like that.

  21. ted im not saying everything is right mate but i think hounding Lerner out would be a major catastrophe with possible fatal results for Aston villa if you think Lerner in it for money then i think a tenner on euro millions would of been a better investment

    1. Do you think for a minute Lerner (a hard nose Yank who started off as an an investment analyst) bought AVFC as a act of philanthropy?

        1. I think they buy them for status, or to as a reason to stop in the country (if you’re a dodgy Russian that scammed thousands of people out their oil shares (allegedly)) but that was in reply to Billy’s assumption the RL didn’t buy it for the money.
If you hold with Billy’s view then would you care to share with us the reason(s) you believe RL purchased AVFC?

          1. Haven’t got a clue and I’m not having a go at you. I also haven’t got a clue if Lerner is going to keep Lambert, if he’ll get money in the summer, if he’ll ever invest again in Aston Villa, if he’s going to move the club to a nice field he owns near Burton and turn Villa Park into a giant water park or what colour socks he put on this morning.

I do know, however, that Lerner isn’t screwing up the club, he has invested in the academy, he hasn’t sold the club to a bunch of chancers or asset strippers (which, frankly, he has every right to do whether anyone likes it or not), we haven’t been relegated, there’s no evidence to suggest he is going to asset strip the club himself and the world isn’t going to end tomorrow.

Yes, some matches in the last three years have been dire beyond belief and we’re only going to know what’s going on in hindsight in five years time. There are going to be much much worse owners out there although I don’t believe there are many PL managers past or future out there worse than Lambert.

Maybe debt is being cancelled out and finances are being sorted. Perhaps the academy received investment and we’ll be buying in more interesting new young talent aged 16 or 17 because the penny pinching has been planned for a few years and we’re going to be relying much more heavily on the likes of Grealish and co. I don’t know, I don’t think many on here know. I still believe we have a basis on which to add two or three £10million players every season, mixed in with the best of the academy players.

I don’t go to many matches because I can’t afford to go and invariably am on my own when I do. I’m trying to get to away matches when I can get tickets and I’m close to London and when I have tried to come to VP this year TV schedules have twice screwed it up so I’m in Birmingham but there’s no bloody match on. If I was paying to go every week I suspect I’d be even more pissed off than I already am. I think though that the summer will give us a very good idea of what’s going on, and I think if there isn’t some decent investment there are going to be a lot fewer bums on seats next season. That’s going to determine Lerner’s direction, if attendances and shirt sales drop that’s when he’ll pay attention. Probably.

        2. Foxy I didn’t think you were.

Invest in the academy? Just how do that? Run trials , give kids a chance if they’re good f**k em off, hows that equate to investment? Kids that you mention aren’t getting look in.

Asset stripping definition – The activity in which a company buys an unsuccessful company cheaply and sells its assets separately at a profit.

          Barry – Miner – Young – Downing – Benteke?

Proof of the pudding in the eating and all that?
