Fabian Delph has been hugely impressive for Aston Villa so far this season, many tabloids believe he is THE under-rated Premier League player so far and many are still staggered that he hasn’t been called up to the England side. None-theless, Delph is performing very well for Aston Villa and is high on statistic charts such as number of interceptions (16), dribbles completed (15) and successful tackles (25). As a result, Paul Lambert has hinted that he may offer Delph a new contract sooner, rather than later.
“I’ll look at it (contract extension) in due course,” added Lambert. “Eighteen months is still a long time. But the way he’s playing I think that’s down the line. If he goes to the World Cup then we’ll be in trouble – I’m sure he’ll be knocking my door!” – Paul Lambert
Delph was signed by Martin O’Neil for 6 million and in-fact he is the last O’Neil signing to remain at Villa Park. Delph’s contract does expire at the end of 2015, but I think it’s important to offer him a new contract because I don’t want him to signed by another team. Having Delph in midfield in the long-run will provide Villa with experience and in my opinion our future captain. He is very vocal, has a great work-rate and contributes to the team on a high level.
I’d be happy to see him get a few more years, really has shown a great attitude towards the game since Lambert’s arrival and I think that we would now sorely miss him.
He’s always going to be in the good not great category due to his lack of goals, but his performances this season have been a highlight.
I’ve always liked Delph, but let’s not forgoet he was very poor at times last year. So much so that even I resorted to slating him.
He did get better though and this season has played very well up to now, being head and shoulders the best mid for me.
If only we could see some more of those barnstorming goals that he was known for at Leeds, then I’d have no qualms.
As it stands, I’d say let’s see how he goes for a while, but overall, yes, I’m minded to agree we should be looking to get him signed up.
Got to bear in mind that he was scoring those goals against third division defences, his goal at the Bescot was a cracker pre-season.
He has the ability clearly, he just doesn’t seem to have the confidence at the top level, and has had some shocking misses.
That said though, rather than pay to bring someone in, just extend the contract of someone who is settled and has shown his worth.
Yes, fair point about 3rd div defences.
I was gutted for him though when he hit the post a few weeks back.
I’d love to see him bag us a few goals, as let’s face it, we could do with some more input from the midfield on the goalscoring front.
his improvement this season so far has been brilliant, a real 110%er ive been very impressed with him. when you’ve got a player like that in your team, a real grafter, fighter and ball winner he’s crying out for the midfield creative CM we all so desperately want to partner him.
Great to see him starting to reach his potential. Does anyone else think he looks like Dion Dublin’s “mini me”?
