For once, I actually called something correctly and Tim Sherwood has been confirmed as our next manager.
I gave my reasons as to why I thought he might be the choice in the previous post, so I won’t go over that again.
What’s surprised me though, is how fast the deal has been done and I’m actually quite impressed.
There are two options as to how we’ve gone about things, in my opinion.
We’ve either panicked and done it all in what? two days?
Or this has been planned for a while and Fox has been negotiating with Sherwood quietly behind the scenes.
I suspect and hope it was probably the latter, although I can’t say I’d be pleased if that’s the way we go about business, ie doing a deal behind Lambert’s back. But this is Football and the whole game seems to have a different set of rules, doesn’t it?
So there we go, Sherwood it is then.
It’s good that we’ve appointed him before tomorrow’s game against Leicester, as I was quite prepared for us to lose, so we could concentrate all our energy on the league. Now that we have a manager though, my attitude has changed and I want us to go all out to win the game.
I won’t say it’s a stunning appointment, but I do think it’s a decent one, given our current requirements. Let’s hope Sherwood can hit the ground running eh?
I think we can expect some fireworks in the next few weeks, as it would seem he doesn’t mince his words, which is probably why some people dislike him with a passion.
Personally, I think this is exactly what’s needed, as many fans, even neutral ones, think that our team ought to be performing better than it is in reality.
Which to me says that certain players are far too comfortable.
I really don’t care who he falls out with, as long as he keeps us up.
Survival this season is all that counts for me and if he proves overly troublesome, we can sack him at the end of the season, even if it costs us three and a half year’s wages.
It’ll be pennies in the scheme of things. As long as we survive relegation.
Welcome aboard Tim and good luck.
I suspect you’ll need it.
Will he take over the reigns tomorrow?????
Likely to be in the stands with the Marshall’s too take over for tomorrow. Which I’m not looking forward too after Scott Marshall’s comments he’s going to be asking Lambert for consultation. I’d sack him solely for that too.
Agreed, he’ll probably be in the stands, taking an overview, although Markham’s comment below is interesting.
Either way, I’d expect him to have some input.
Also agreed about Marshall. If he has similar views to/takes notice of Lambert, he’s part of the problem and should be sacked.
Andrew, you’re spot on about Marshall; what a cop-out for his only game in charge to ask the guy who’s just spent the whole season to date proving that he didn’t have an answer [in fact didn’t even seem to know what the question was].
He really should be sent a P45 just for that crass statement.
Kinda explains why he’s been at the last 2 home games
Really?
I didn’t know that.
It does sound like we were dealing behind Lambert’s back then.
Although, having thought about things, I wonder if Lambert knew all about it and was just holding the reins while we got a new manager in?
Funny that. I was in the Trinity Rd for the Chelsea game, quite close to the press-box, and somebody near me in the crowd said at half-time that they thought that they’d seen Sherwood in the ground.
Couldn’t see him myself, but now that you mention it, it does make a bit more sense.
Badger, In any industry if you have an employee on a performance plan, which probably means they will ultimately be fired, then you start reviewing candidates well in a advance of the trigger being pulled. This is normal business and not going behind Lamberts back. If the club were being proactive then that is a good sign regardless of whether or not you agree with the appointment.
Besides, Lambert has claimed he asked Lerner twice this season to fire him (he didn’t have the integrity to resign and lose out on a big cash pay off of course).
Welcome to the real world, and let’s all welcome Tim Sherwood to Villa and hope he can fulfill his potential over the short and long term.
Cheers
SMJ – I think you’re right. All these little snippets of information now coming out [particulalry Lambert’s claim that he asked to be fired/relieved] start to fall into place.
If you have a manager who apparently wants to be let go [once would be enough for me], then as a director you’d really have to make contingency plans to bring someone else in to replace them.
Lerner has ruined this club now there’s no way bk he is taking us all for mugs imo. If we stay which I think we will as new manager syndrome will get us extra points I expect to be roughly in this position next year. Lerner is toxic to the club and if football didn’t have relegation he would have kept lamberk for the end of his reign.
You’re probably right Sammy.
I’m just too nice a person 🙂
I’d sound people out, but wouldn’t do a deal, until I’d got rid.
Totally agree about the proactive point; much better than being reactive and kneejerk.
Sorry guys it doesn’t quite work like that. I had a problem with my Board when I was a senior manager and suggested that they remove me (with a sensible financial arrangement); they declined. Why should I resign? In the end it cost them a lot more to get rid but that’s their problem not mine! So I think Lambert was within his rights to carry on if Lerner decided his offer.
*declined his offer – predictive text!
lets give him our backing and hope can keep us up before we call for his head
Was wondering who he will bring in as his assistant . Im thinking an older head . I was hoping for someone else but all in all im happy enough to give him time and see how things go. anyone is better than depression on legs lambert .
Yes, important point, that.
I’d like to see Hoddle, who is supposedly a brilliant coach.
you must have read my mind iv been thinking hoddle would be a good fit as assistant .
Well I for sure not really happy with the appointment of Sherwood not much managerial experience as yet and couldn’t get best out of a good spurs team.
Am so pissed off we didn’t try Glenn hoddle as he has vast experience and tactical knowledge of the game and will have a few contact abroad as he has been around Europe running coaching schools!!
I only hope he get the assistant manager job or coaching roll at the mighty villa!!
But gonna back him and hope he proves me wrong and keeps us up.
Then I’ll hold my hands up and apologies!!!
Does anyone know what contract he had been given!??
Summer 2018, from the press link that I saw.
Yep, Summer 2018.
Marv, no, he hasn’t much experience, agreed, but Fox knows him and must think he has something about him. I’d expect he’ll probably advise Sherwood, so it’s not all bad.
Getting Hoddle in as the 2IC and coach would be a really good move.
I think this appointment is a big gamble, but that’s what was needed, imo.
We were definitely going down under Lambert and we need to shake things up, big style.
Sherwood will do that, at least.
Whether he can turn around what looks a sinking ship, is the big question.
But I really believe any of the managers who are available/would come to us would find things challenging.
Sherwood will be either brilliant or total rubbish for us, imo.
I hope it’s the former and am backing him.
Huge gamble this mate, but at least “Triffic Redknapp ain’t the one!”..anyway, keep us up, win the FA Cup and that’ll more than do! All the best Ardent.
Hi Sasa.
Agree – any appointment is going to be a gamble. Even if we’d persuaded SAF to come out of retirement and give us 3 months of his time, there’s no guarantee he’d be able to change this lot around after so many dispiriting non-performances.
I have no idea how Sherwood will do, but can he really do worse than Lambert’s last 4 or 5 months?
Hoddle was actually running an academy in Spain, where he took kids from clubs in the UK who had been released at 18, without earning a contract. His goal was to try to find them opportunities in lower league clubs abroad because they didn’t make the cut in the UK. Not much help to a premier league club other than maybe some contacts with lower division clubs in Spain. I think the benefit of having Hoddle involved would be his coaching pedigree.
Interested that you say TS couldn’t get the best out of a strong Spurs squad. He has the best win ration in the Premier League of any Spurs manager.
I for one think he is a good manager and is about as good as we could get so lets all get behind Him. I do hope Hoddle can be brought in too.
Precisely, its no good moaning and groaning now like Oohah, get behind the man, hey after that twat Lamdert what more worse can it get. Its given me a brighter outlook on things. Welcome Tim Sherwood.
Yep we all said it couldn’t get worse after mcleish and look what happened there ffs
OohAh you’re part of the problem. You need a big dose of reality
That’s real scary having all supporters behind the manager. We might as well have the director’s give him a vote of confidence, oh hang on they did. Now he is in real trouble.
The other good news is that Stoke and West Ham are out of the FA Cup, and Liverpool are losing at Palace. Good year to make the quarter finals of the FA Cup, so hopefully we will put on a good show against Leicester tomorrow. UTV
Not quite all Gerry.
The poll on the previous post shows about 20-25% against appointing Sherwood.
I’ve seen similar figures on other sites too.
Although many of the 25% dissenters are probably willing to give him a go, I’d say.
My stance is give him a few games at least and if he doesn’t start doing the business, the knives come out.
Probably harsh, but it’s all about results isn’t it?
And that’s why they get paid the totally stupid amount they do.
Me? I’d take dog’s abuse for six months, if it meant I was going to walk away with a couple of million quid, but I digress……..
If Jose had come [& brought Costa with him] I daresay that there’d have been a few Villa fans who’d have said that they wanted someone else [Oohah would probably declare again for McLeish…].
We’ll never get 100% agreement on the ‘right’ manager unless we win the EPL and give Barca or Real a good hiding in the Champions league.
I don’t believe that many would have put Sherwood top of their wish-list, but he’s here, and it’d be hard for him to set as many unwanted records as Lambert’s just broken.
Now we just have to see what he can do in the next 2 1/2 months….
Yawn no if mourinho came I would be a happy clapper with more good reason then anyone else creaming over Sherbert
That’s the problem with you OohAh – you twist things to suit your warped view of all things Villa. Where on this blog has anyone been ‘creaming’ themselves over Sherwood’s appointment? You, my friend, need to get a grip on reality
Most posters on here spouting the usual tripe oh he must be better than lamberk, let’s give him time, Oohah is negative because he dosnt agree with the sheep. It’s pathetic no ones allowed to have an opinion unless we all agree with Badger and co. This site has gone like other sites eg consistently burying our heads up our arses pretending everything is great if we finish 4th from bottom. Nobody wants to face the reality of having the worst owner in the clubs history. This club will never never thrive again under Lerner and anyone that thinks differently really are living in cloud cuckoo land.
That’s the typical naysayer way. They make up a lot of garbage that no one’s said or no one’s done to prove (and fail) to make a point.
“It’s pathetic no one’s allowed an opinion if it doesn’t agree with badger and co.”
-Goes on to call people sheep for having the same opinion.
Hypocritical much?
Also at least learn to back up your opinions with facts instead of making up garbage like he didn’t get results at the end of his season than when he started as that was completely false.
Ooh ahh i don’t believe 95% of your comments are actually heartfelt, I have long assumed that your purpose is click/reply/comment bait on this forum,
The reason being is there is no logic or continuity or lucidity in your opinions, they conflict and contradict each other. They sensationalise.
The latest and greatest is now your stance on sherwood, who hasn’t managed a game yet.
If you criticise his lack of experience if you thought his tactics were lacking if you didn’t like his gillet, It would be something of a genuine comment but instead i see a reference about how we thought it couldn’t get worse after Mcleish (who had a worse win ratio than Lambert believe it or not)
I don’t think it could be worse than mcLeish, what more .. how many times have you said that it couldn’t be worse than mcleish but there you go, thats that opinion turned on its head.
but Incredibly, Sherwood is an awful appointment, and we are as good as relegated.
I can understand the criticism but not coming from you. I have seen you post numerous times about firing Lambert as nothing could be worse?? (even though Mcleish was in fact statistically worse but lest forget about that for now,
the first thing on the forum is it is worse or just as bad and now we are certs for relegation,
another 180 turn there.
but to top it off there is the sense of targeting, the incitement, the sensationalism, them vs us, happy clappers as you put it, or sheep or simply the crass nature of it,
its so so tabloid, .. its basically click bait, comment drivers, traffic generation, it doesn’t really add anything. of course no matter what i put on here its all just one persons opinion as well!
and that is the beauty of forums! its the ultimate equaliser, I don’t get to say what is right or wrong or who should post not .. I can only state what i think – support it as best I can and let people read it or ignore it!
so read it or ignore it, you constantly undermine your credibility as a genuine poster .. or that you indeed honestly believe anything you post yourself! from my possibly very flawed point of view!
Ok if lamberk win ratio is better than mcleish that’s because he’s been here longer and spend more money his net spend is higher. Also point tallies are the same or worse and don’t get me started on goals conceded and GD. Lamberk has given us the most unwanted records in our history and that is a fact. To say Lambert is a step up is ridiculous. At best they are the same at worse mcleish shades it. As for driving traffic you couldn’t be further from the truth me and Badger don’t make a penny on this site in fact we are both still out of pocket from buying of Ian. The ads we inherited from Ian pay something like 0.15p-0.25p per thousand views hence we no longer use it. The odd five to ten pounds we have made just pays for hosting this site that’s it. This is a true labour of love me and Badger get sweet FA for doing this other than loads of abuse from some ungrateful posters!
It is appreciated but you do put yourself up to be shot down.
LOL gerry yep its the curse of death… he is the last throw of the dice lets hope its a double 6 🙂
I’m quite hopeful this might work. Let’s not forget where he is picking up the squad and that will not t be easy for anyone. One thing is for sure with Tim is he will not except anyone who’s heart and head is not in this relegation battle and who’s heart and head is not in aston villa and playing for us fan. He will put a hard working and committed team out.i just hope he has the tactics and game plan to go with it.
Good luck Tim
Tim sherwoods claret and blue army!!!!!!!
Hope he can do the business but I can’t stomach the guy. Pfttt, 3.5yr contract, he’ll be off the minute we’re relegated!!
Agree Helenius don’t like him at all from what I hear of Spurs fans they were glad to get shot as he was toxic to the club behind the scenes
Wasnt keen on Sherwood but will give him a chance and fingers crossed im completely wrong. Wouldnt want Hoddle anywhere near the club though with his strange spritual ideas and vues on the disabled.
There is an interview with Sherwood on Youtube where he is responding to critisim from Glenn Hoddle and Sherwood says “its a long, long time since Glenn last managed and the game has moved on”.
He won’t be coming as number 2 by the sounds of that!!!!
That’s why I wouldn’t want Hoddle as manager.
But he is highly respected as a coach, so if he kept himself in the background, I think he’d be a great appointment.
Was nowhere near my first choice. Don’t really understand what he’s done to merit such rave reviews, yes though, his short stint down south was decent enough.
Let’s hope he does a job. Supposeldy he is a man-lanager type which we need terribly right now so that’s a good point. If he can do with Benteke what he did with Adebayor we’ll finish 8th.
As I said, alhtough not my first choice I’m happy the board have amoved fast to secure someone, time is running thin and I’m glad we have someone in to get his ideas across.
The most intriguing thing of all is to see how someone else can do with our squad because I feel with the right man (hopefully sherwood) we are a top half side.
UTV
Spot on I don’t honestly get why everyone raving about him. A lot of mates in the media helps bit like mon. Even qpr and. WBA wernt desperate enough to get him. With qpr thinking his assistant is a better bet and after their first away win who can argue. Though like I keep saying any new manager usually makes a positive impact for first 6 games then they get found out. Expect Sherbit to get at least 12 points from next 6 games
Not seen anyone ‘raving’ about him on here; most say same, i.e. we could all think of someone else we’d probably have voted for if it had been our choice.
But he’s here now, and 12 points from the next 6 games would be very good news after the dirge we’ve suffered in the last few months.
I didn’t mean on specifically on here Ardent Villain, I was more speaking about the media pal!
New Regime – Sorry – my comment was really a response to Oohah’s wind-up!
Ah okay! No probs pal.
Semms oohah is always winding people up on here lol
Ever thought his demands might have been too much for them? Like asking Peace for money to make the baggies anything more than a yoyo team? That he might have wanted a plan to forward the club? And perhaps now Fox has given him that commitment and those assurances that he couldn’t get at WBA and QPR.
And that’s a bad thing he’s ambitious and wants guarantees?
I’m have to say oohah, I’m with you on this.
I don’t think he’ll cut-it. I really hope I’m wrong, but I at least think he’ll do the businss keeping us up. I expect a solid start and a fade off toard the end of the season, as you say, when he gets found out.
Let’s hope we’re wrong though
lol Serhbit!
You both could be right but come lads lets drop the negativity before the inks dry on the contact, give the guy a chance to show us what he’s about.
BWS don’t get me wrong pal I will definitely give him a chance, I’m right behind him. There can only be positivity right now and I am positive, I just have a feeling it won’t be for the long run! I could be wrong I really don’t know but I am chuffed and I think we could of done a lot worse!
Of course in the long run virtually all manager appointments end in tears – possible exceptions of Fergie and Wenger – usually a sacking.
But let’s just see what this guy can do.
Thanks New Regime glad someone has woken up and smelt the coffee. Yes he will keep us up and start of well like all new managers. But next season he will be found out as results go against us and we are back in bottom 5-6 fans will be applauding it saying we are not in bottom 3 and we are playing better football so everything’s great! And Lerner keeps fans happy running us on the cheap with no ambition for another few years. It’s a disgrace imo.
Done
Long time reader first time poster. Not overly enthusiastic with Sherwood but I agree with everyone who says to give him a chance. I think any chance of Hoddle coming in as coach is pie in the sky to be honest, the guy that Sherwood loves is Chris Ramsey, all the stuff I’ve heard and read about this guys coaching ability is extremely positive. He’s contracted to QPR till the end of the season but it wouldn’t surprise me if he leaves and joins Tim at Villa in the summer, hope so anyway. UTV.
Welcome aboard Tim, may this be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Tim Sherwoods Claret and Blue army.
Always hear good things about Sherwood bringing through young players and the ability to help them find their potential from.his managing youth division days. So lets hope Grealish and Robinson can thrive under Tim and we might just start to bang in a few goals. Welcome to the club and I hope you bring some good fortune with you.
was it he or Pochetino that gave Kane his start, or mason or bentaleb, ? or who did he bring anyone through to the senior team while he was manager at spurs? I know he may have done a lot more with them while the youth coach, but just wondering about his ever so short record as the head honcho and what was his policy on youth playing time.
I would love to see gardner recalled and given a go, I think he should be fit enough now
Wasn’t Les Ferdinand his no. 2 at Spurs? Not sure if he is still ther but don’t be surprised if he comes to Villa. At least he knew where the barn door was! LOL
Ferdinand has just been appointed QPR’s Director of Football so he won’t be coming.
Thanks Gareth – didn’t know that
The truth is I don’t really know Sherwood’s history, but it seems he surrounds himself with good coaches, who, at the end of the day are just as important.
I’d expect him to get another good one in, hopefully Hoddle.
Oohah, you’re at it again.
We simply aren’t going to get a top manager and half a billion to spend, so you need to get real and look at what we can do.
No-one will be good enough for you, that’s obvious and it’s why your opinion doesn’t matter to me anymore, I’m afraid.
That said, 12 points from the next six?
I’d take that, as it’s miles better than we would have got under Lambert.
Harsh but true badger. Oohah you need to embrace the change and that times have a changed or alternatively get on your bike with the previous owner of this blog.
Hope Robin of Loxley does well he better anyways or were in the shit best do it Sherbutt Goodluck to Ya.
LOL JD love the Robin of Loxley twist – all we need now is a Maid Marion – at least the guy knew how to score!
Does that make Gabby Friar Tuck?
I am not massively keen on Sherwood, however I look at his record at spurs and how he got improvements out of people like Adebayor and think he is probably the best option out there.
He is also a man with a point to prove after leaving spurs…he is definitely driven and I can see him not letting some of the players get away with mediocre performances as they have been doing (Weimann, Sanchez etc still getting praise from Lambert “I thought we were excellent today” after poor displays)
I know he likes putting in youngsters too…Maybe he will give Grealish the belief and confidence then an extended run in the team he needs.
I look at it like this…do I think we are more likely to pick up points with Sherwood than Lambert?
Yes.
That’ll do for me. (For now!)
