    I know the fans have a positive mood at the moment, but I’m going to be contrary, given my neutral head that likes a debate;

First, all that matters to me is our league position.
    Where did we finish?
We just about scraped survival; hardly successful, but the minimum expected, I’d say.

Ok, you can say that we’re in transition (again).
and fwiw, I’d agree we genuinely are, this time.

But would you say we have genuine quality that can compete at the top end of the prem?
Or are we just good enough to keep swimming?

Bent, imo, should never have been frozen out the way he was, for example.
Poor management or ownership, imo (depending on who you think made that decision).

We can’t comment on the new incoming players, as none of us have seen them in the prem, but in keeping with the feelgood factor, I hope they come good for us.

That still doesn’t make it a case that we should reward Paul Lambert just yet though.
If he believes in our cause (which I think he does) and improves us league-wise this season, he can be rightly rewarded next year.

Badger you make some interesting points mate.

Firstly, yep we just scraped survival, we finished 14th on the same number of points as the team in 12th and only 3 (I think) behind 10th. Tbf it’s easy to look at where we finished but if you look at the bigger picture, I think we done fantastic in the 2nd half of the season which only bodes well for the future. We had a practically new team out there when the season started and over time it’s a team that got better and better. Although I think we should be aiming higher i also appreciate what Lambert has done so far and it will take time. I don’t personally think we have the quality to be challenging at the top end of the prem yet but what I do think is we have the foundations of building something really good that in 2-3 years we could see European football back at Villa Park and that will also help us to sign better quality players. I personally don’t think we’ve been much of an attraction over the past few years and besides, money doesn’t guarantee nothing, Lerner found that out the hard way. I totally agree with the way the club is now being ran regarding transfers.

Bent may of been treated harshly and I agree he could/should of been treated better but in the same breathe non of us lot know what goes on behind the scenes. I heard a rumour a while back that after he got caught or found out about (edited, as it might be deemed to be slander or defamation) No one really knows what goes on and maybe he could of been treated better but Lambert obviously froze him out for a reason, We just don’t know.

Again I think the bigger picture needs to be looked at regarding a new contract for Lambert. If it was down to me I’d give him one now (and a contract). He’s completely rebuilding the club. I’ve already, in my post, said why I think he deserves a new contract. We’re not all going to agree but he’s certainly, in my opinion, the best manager we’ve had in a while, simply by looking at the bigger picture.

Agree badger and contracts are worth nothing anyway. If utd want him in a years time (as unlikely as that is) he will be off like a shot with Benteke in tow. The juries out on lambert IMO I think he has created a top 10 forward line, a bottom six midfield and a bottom 2 defence. I still don’t think he has done enough to address defence and pre season friendly s are proving that ie still conceding from corners ffs. I really can’t see us doing better or even equaling last season tbh unless he surprises us eith a couple of quality signings. On the same note it was lambert and lamberts team that got humiliated at Chelsea and Bradford and gave us arguably the worst run of results in recent history. We havnt kept a clean sheet for months an this has continued into friendly s and it was lambert and his team that took us into the bottom 3 in the first place. If Wigan had not had the cup run I think it’s fair to say we would of dropped and I expect same again next yr and the yr after under lambert and Lerner. Sorry I said this last yr as was proved right hope I’m wrong for this yr. btw thought it was shameful the way bent was treated no need for it and think we would be stupid to sell him IMO

What he means, of course, is that had Wigan not been on that cup run Sunderland would have beaten us at VP and Newcastle would have been allowed a third stab at us and one. Not to mention the fact that Wigan would have won every game from Jan and finished in the CL.

I can honestly say i’ve never come across a pair like them, not an ounce of knowledge between them, clearly very unhappy in their personal lives and feel the need to vent their frustrations in other ways, it’s a shame they ‘support’ our club as their ‘support’ is awful to say the least.

Oh and boys, apparently Luna is rubbish, according to OohAh’s mate who saw him play 45 mins of a friendly, but Okore is amazing and is going to be our best signing, because apparently, and there are no facts to back this claim by the way, he’s a defensive Benteke.

You couldn’t make half the shit being spouted on this site up, and with ‘supporters’ like these, i feel ashamed to be associated with my beloved club at times, i really do.

I am sick of all this shit about Bent being hard done by – bollocks. What happened was Lambert made him temporary captain but then moved the arm band away from Bent as he realised he was not up to the job and basically a johnny big bollocks. Darren Bent then thought after the instability at the club he would throw his rattle thinking his goals 2 seasons in a row which kept us up along with his pricetag and wages would mean he would be playing under a new manager who didnt mug him off over the captaincy. It back fired and the lambert & bent relationship is unrepairable. Bent has also continued his one man assault on other staff in the club and basically been a prick to force a move. Dont give me this shit that bent has been hard done by, he would happily seen us go down last season. This is no bullshit.

I agree oohah. Contracts in the current game are meaningless, for both players and managers.

However I’m one of the firm optimists under the Lerner and Lembert regime. I can’t understand that some of you don’t see progression and future foundations firmly being put in place. One of the unfortunate consequences of today’s game is that fans expect too much too quickly because of oil barons coming in a throwing millions at a club and getting them CL footy and domestic silverware. A lot of us on this this site have been suckered into this mentality. Our club cannot work like that because of certain constraints. We all know the premise under which Lambert came to Villa and he still hasn’t fulfilled that commitment (slashing wages) so we can’t go out and spend 10mil each on 3 players until that is done. I would love it too but it can’t happen right now. Imagine when Lambert is given freedom to do so, I’m sure he is going to pick up some fecking outstanding players. To think of what he has bought in and for how much and furthermore how they have subsequently performed is the work of a shrewd and intellegent manager with a good scouting network. This is only good for us.

There are many improvements that still need to be made, I don’t shy away form that, it’s glaringly obvious. However as a club we were in a complete shambles and utterly desperate for someone to come in and make drastic changes, Lambert was that man and he has worked minor miracles so far IMO.
Under any other appointment I believe relegation would have been a certainty last season. It went down to wire last year, and I think we survived because of Lamberts team, and Lamberts signings not the old guard who have served us so badly in years before. Benteke kept us up last year, Lambert deserves plaudits for that much in that he signed him. Without him there was no way Bent would have done it againand especially not with the “the man who i won’t names” legion around him. Lambert took a risk, came in and completely reshaped a premier league football club and kept them up. We’re talking about the toughest league in football in the world here, that’s no mean feet.

He absolutely deserves a contract extension and I hope to see him around for another 10 years because we only get better under him. UTV

Agree to a point md8 but no one expects us to compete with the sky four but we do expect to compete with and better teams like stoke, WBA and Swansea! When u look at saints signing wanyama at 12m and Swansea Bony for the same it shows that we can’t even match these guys anymore and that is why the Lerner era is a total folly and why things will never improve. On the bent front why wouldn’t he have scored the goals to keep us up last season he did the 2 seasons before.

      1. Vaze
        Vaze July 22, 2013 at 8:45 am . Reply

I think that we’ll be as if not more competitive than Stoke & WBA, probably even Swansea who are set to lose key players, as well as the signings that they’ve made.

I think that we were the blueprint that showed success is not built on ยฃ12m signings on big wages. Lambert is going the only other route that makes sense.

The finale to last season was impressive, although we did only beat sides that in better times we would fully expect to take points from.

This season is key, it’s his side now. I’m fully behind Lambert, and I hope that the lads are fully up for the challenge.

Can’t wait for our day out to the Emirates, should be a good sign of where we’re headed.

ive said all along im giving it till jan before I decide on Lambert.
I have to say though from what I see he is a very promising manager with a philosophy im totally behind and the more I see and hear from him the more impressed I am, lambert and villas handling of bentekke was excellent and the fact the lad has stayed says a lot about whats going on at villa.
lambert is also highly rated by fans of other clubs.
I believe he is here for the long haul as this whole project is his baby and he seems to have full co-operation from learner.
a new contract? see were we stand at the end of the season.
besides as someone else said contracts these days are seemingly pointless only having the properties of being long, soft and absorbent for players to wipe their arses on as the piss of somewhere else.

Lambert is preparing AVFC for the long term. Those that harp on about last season struggles, are the typical short term ‘I want everything now’ kind of fans, who don’t understand the rebuilding process Lambert faced when he walked into a shambles of a club in summer 2012.
He has cleared a lot of the garbage out, with just Ireland remaining from the lazy players/ trouble makers.
Young hungry players have been given a platform and those that have risen to the challenge are being rewarded with new deals. For the first time in years, I feel we have a strategy and plan to move forward. I have embraced it and look forward to the coming season. Sure, there won’t be any miracles but steady progress is still progress. As for giving Lambert a new deal, I think the club will as long as they see some kind of forward momentum during this season and that is only fair.

I agree to a certain point with you Richie, however, like most of the 30 odd thousand who witnessed us at home against Wigan, Saints and Newcastle amongst others – I don’t remember many thinking ‘I know this is shite but we have a long term plan’ most people just thought it was crap.

At times last season we were undeniably embarrassing. Our defence, majority Lambert signings, was a joke to the point where the crowd cheered if we successfully cleared a corner ffs, and I don’t think many would’ve been shocked had we dropped – Thank Heaven we didn’t.

I am and always will be Villa and I pray that the new signings are more Benteke-like than Joe Bennett but to be praising Randy Lerner for his managing of the CB situation is forgetting that much of the financial mess we find ourselves in and recent fall from grace is arguably his fault.

I think a lot of people are under estimating the job a new manager had a t Villa..

His remit was to SLASH the wage bill and bring in players on 20K or less..

Tha is not an easy task.. Dunne Collins Cuellar Bent Ireland Given Petrov Hutton Warnock all has to leave one way or another..

A lot weren’t upto the task anyway BUT instead of replacing them with younger players on same wages we had to replace them with players on less then half there wages.. gulp!!

People comparing the Mcliesh season with last are living in cloud cuckoo land..

We brought in players on 10K a week with the specific goal that if you do well we will IMPROVE your contract.. which is exactly what has happened for Benteke Westwood Lowton Guzan and Weimann..

Notably Bennet hasn’t had a pay rise because he didn’t show enuf..

It was a VERY HIGH RISK strategy from RL.. and that is a different debate BUT PL has done wonders and we are heading the right way..

By next season i think we will be in a position to get a few players in for 7M plus and we have the manager with the right scouting set up to get quality in..
