Terry Jones has asked the following;
Now I know this has got nothing to do with the situation at VP but with what has happened over the last few days with wide corruption within football, is it not a subject that should be discussed by all football fans?
It inevitably affects us all, as its our money that pays these players wages one way or another, be it through the turnstiles or merchandise.
So do you think that this as been part of the game since it first started or is it just a phenomena of the modern game?
Does it stem from the top down ie, the FA or is it just localised to players?
Or are officials, managers and maybe owners involved?
We all know about Fergie time, for example.
Villa were on the end of that more than once over his time at Man U. Could any of that been dodgy?
So what do you as Villa fans think?
In my opinion no matter how much technology is bought in it will never stop corruption unless the so-called minister for sport takes a grip and a full police inquery is implemented into football as a whole.
Come on lads what are your thoughts on this?
Up The Villa.
Perhaps, I’m wearing rose tinted glasses, but I never had the slightest clue that this sort of stuff was going on years back.
That’s not to say it never happened. Stories about this sort of stuff have been posted in the Mail recently.
But they’re small beans, imo.
Look to cricket. Where are the accusations aimed at?
Some supposed expert commented on this on Beeb news earlier.
He said that most spot betting in footy is Asian based.
But at the same time, he said this whole story is bollocks, as any bet over 100 quid on a specific booking would shut the market down.
I did immediately ask myself which market he was talking about though.
I have my own views, but will keep them private.
Suffice to say, I don’t believe it’s a big problem in Europe.
Badger mate do you remember the George Graham affair got done for taking bungs it ruined him and i for one thought he was a good manager. Now to me this is similar and does need full investigation. He got caught and we were told that a similar thing could not happen again, but look at the revelation that are now coming to light.
There’s a world of difference between taking a bung on the transfer of a player compared to actual match fixing, GG took a cut of the transfer fee, i never thought badly of him for it, i’m sure there are loads of other managers who have done the same.
Match fixing is a different kettle of fish, as you rightly said, it affects the fans.
Ah, managers, I forgot that.
A certain Mr BC was supposed to have been involved in bungs too.
And wasn’t a certain TV accused?
They didn’t get paid that much then though and I’d guess that’s not so much of a problem now.
Cause its going on take Red nap, Your right BC was taking bungs that’s why he never got the England job, George Graham gave it back when he was found out, I’d say a good many have in someway been given that brown paper bag on deals, I can remember a famous Liverpool goal keeper admitted he had done things for money, now he came from south Africa.
In fairness the South African keeper still protests his innocence to this day and reminds anyone who’ll listen that he was found innocent in a court of law.
Jaymo83 I had the privilege to meet him 5 years ago at a gents only club, 150 people listened to when he came into this country on his own hadn’t a clue how to get to the ground but was met by then manager of the club. I have a picture of him and me together, believe me he told us all that it went on in them days. That brown bag.
Was at a similar do about 5 years ago and whist he made several jokes about it he still denied it. Not saying your wrong btw bill.
No just thinking now, same with Paul Merson same place and he made comments that when he started with Sky he gamble a lot, and at one stage he had his eye a a race he had bet on, he was supposedly commenting on a game and a pen was given, we’ll they asked him what happen but he hadn’t a clue he was watching the race, I’m beginning to think all that was made up for us on the night. Might be the same with Bruce.
Where did you see them both Bill, if you don’t mind me asking?
Great post The betting element won’t be European based because as badger mentioned, large bets on unusual markets are flagged up immediately which is what prompted investigations into some snooker stars etc. the betting will usually take place in Asia where there are several “underground” bookmakers as gambling is illegal in many of these countries.
It’s unlikely that corrupt bets are placed on a result only basis as this would require to many people to be involved to ensure the correct outcome and the costs as well as the risk would prohibit this. Most of these bets will be based on outcomes directly controlled by an individual ie a booking, sending off, missed penalty, first throw in, high number of corners where a defender could intentionally purposely knock the ball out for a corner to ensure a betof over a certain number of corners won. These bets require the collusion of as few people as posibble ensuring the risk, as well as the cost, is as low as possible.
Personally I doubt it’s rife at the top of the game purely because Prem players earn so much you would logically assume they would need an enormous payment for taking such a risk -also, why would a “middle man” pay a prem player a fortune when he could get the same return from a lower investment with a player in the lower leagues. I do feel drugs are rife in top flight football but that’s another story.
Corruption in all sport is rife, although people are scared to admit it is. Makes you wonder whether an England Bowler might purposely bowl an unbelievable wide as the first ball of a major test series????
Sorry jaymo83 trotted off to bed when you asked, it was a the Haunchwood sports and social club. Nuneaton.
Jaymo, nice response, fair play mate.
I don’t really do betting, so struggle to give my own views with any authority.
But’ bloody hell, I do remember that first ball you’re on about.
And to think it was just put down as “nerves’.
Hmm.
Funny that! I’m not for one minute saying there was anything untoward but it certainly makes you think.
To be honest corruption/cheating/drugs in sport is something I have a real interest in, the stuff that’s swept under the carpet is amazing.
Also, on the brown paper bag stuff, don’t kid yourself it’s never happened at the Villa, I assure you I’ve heard several stories about 2 former managers who were on the take, from many different players/coaching staff at the time and though none of it is defrauding anyone other than possibly the club coffers and the taxman, I’m absolutely certain it’s true.
I know it goes on & has been for many years asia, south america & most noteably italy.as shearer says there should be ‘zero toterance’to this type of thing.i want to watch a genuine game of footy, not goalies letting in goals or players missing penalties on purpose.fuck me why carn’t people bet like anyother person instead of cheating.has benteke bet against himself that he won’t score another goal this season?lol
DJ Campbell has furiously denied any match fixing allegations and says he hopes to play in the 1-1 draw with Millwall this weekend.
Lol bws nice one.
Giddy you watch that Keane & Vieira – Best Of Enemies on ITV4 last night? As much as I hate Man U it was a great watch, you catch it on the ITV player mate.
Yes mate cracking viewing imo, keane as usual stole the show.when he said if giggs was an arsenal player when they played at vp he would of taken him out the game when he went 60yrd without a challenge before scoring that goal.he’s as arrogant as fuck but a character thats now missing in the present game.
Ps im still lmao at work about that dj campbell joke mate its gone down well with the lads.
Thought that was a right dig at Gigs when Keane said playing for a team for a long time don’t make you a great player, ouch!
And man does he have an axe to grind with Fergie.
Interviewer – “who’s the the best manager you have ever player under”.
Keane, “Clough”.
“Not Fergie?”
Keane- “You asked the question, I answered it.”
Again Ouch.
I agree mate im sure he didn’t make alot of friends when he was at utd.i think he’d throw his mum under the bus if he had the opportunity.a man who turned his back on his country is now helping to run it i find that fucking ironic.
Think he regrets it now, we all do stupid impetuous things when we are young.
Tell me about it the shite ive got myself in i could write a book mate, some learn some don’t the thing was that i was never in the public eye thank fuck.
Lol, the folly of youth hey Giddy.
Too right mate.
You two should get a room
Yer with me BWS and Giddy, the three musketeers, hey both don’t leave Oohah out can he join our gang.
Ron for all and all for Ron!
He couldn’t have joined last year.
Nah im into langford, bws is just my bit on the side mate.
Have utd got loads of injuries?they didn’t have many big names playing lst nite just wondered as it’s quiet on here.
I don’t think that it happens at the highest level. As has been stated, the risk versus reward is not as great.
I certainly don’t think that referees deliberately throw matches, there may be mental pressure from certain managers and mind games do play a significant part.
In fairness, the only awful refereeing decisions that I tend to see are when Villa play, I can watch a neutral match and think it’s all gone off reasonably well lol !
As for takes in the past, I think that the Balaban and Angel transfers were ‘interesting’ at the time. That’s all I have to say on the matter.
I reckon the bungs go on a lot or at least did especially back in the day, probably pre premier was worse re transfer bungs, again the rewards at the top of the game are so much higher now it would take a ridiculous amount to make it worth a player or manager getting involved.
I susspose however if a player had something to hide, drugs, scandle or gambling debts but it would be extremely rare I think. maybe internationals, the world cup fo instance, big games could be affected, it could be more widespread.
for the most part I think its very very rare especially at the top of the game. I was speaking to someone a while back who was convince the prem fixture list was, well fixed for various reasons, I cant remember which. any way I argued that it would be extremely difficult to rig that because of all the people there’d have to be involved, it just wouldn’t happen wihout it coming to light at some point which is where most conspirisory theories fall down.
personally I absolutely destest any form of cheating/fixing in sport, its one of the reasons I hardly watch boxing any more.
these people are scum and I hope they get the maximum coming to them, they are lucky enough to be involved in football at a professional level and its still not enough for them, what people would do to be in their positions and they just abuse and waste their talent.
Agreed NM you couldn’t get a better example of pure greed mate.
I have always felt that decisions go against England in the major tournaments as we head towards the final, it will probably happen again this year as well
