Aston Villa Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Rémi Garde as our new manager.

The 49-year-old Frenchman is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting coaches and has agreed a contract that will run until the end of season 2018/19.

Rémi enjoyed a successful three-year period as manager of Ligue 1 side Lyon where he led the club to the Couple de France and Trophee des Champions as well as the quarter-finals of the Europa League, successfully implementing his own brand of highly entertaining football in the process.

He is also renowned for developing young talent and the Club is thrilled to have secured his services.

Tom Fox, Aston Villa Chief Executive, said: “For the past year we have been working purposefully to transform the Club in order to build a successful organisation that can compete and succeed in the Premier League.

“Finding a manager who shares and believes in our vision and has the ability to bring it to life through performances on the pitch is essential. We are confident that Rémi is the manager who can deliver the best from the current squad and help set the club up for future success”.

Rémi Garde said: “It is an unbelievable honour to be the manager of such an illustrious football club.

“I’ve had extremely positive meetings with both the owner, Randy Lerner, and Chief Executive Tom Fox. They have ambitious plans for the Club and I’m excited that they have turned to me to help them realise them.

“Obviously we have a difficult task in front of us but I’m looking forward to the challenge with the support of everyone who loves Aston Villa.”

Chairman Randy Lerner added: “Rémi came with ideas, honesty, humour and a steely sense of what it will take for Aston Villa to be what it is meant to be – hard working, tireless, creative and unwilling to concede.

“Nobody at Villa can deny that we are way behind. We recruited aggressively this past summer and it is our responsibility to now harvest this talent rather than buckle under pressure and criticism – we are better than that. On behalf of the Board we wish Rémi every success.”

  1. Gabby’s touched the ball 8 times, apparently the lowest of the season and 2 of them were kick offs. The pundits are laughing at us 🙁

    1. And he is the Captain ! Makes it all the more scarey. Surely he should be taking the bull by the horns and try to make things happen. The guy isn’t Captain material by say stretch of the imagination.

      1. Agbonlahor wouldn’t get into most Championship or League 1 teams these days…

  2. Even Jesus H Christ couldn’t resurrect this lot, good luck Remi, you’re going to need it. Water into wine anyone!!

  3. Why would Garde wish he never took the job? Has nothing to lose, a hero if we stay up or if he’s crap he get a large payout far bigger than commentating on a few games

  4. Andrew, I can’t respond directly to your posts. So which is it? Is it poor, as you agree? Or is it being played out of position, which you also maintain? It really is simple. It is poor. If he was on the other side and made the same mistake with no cover the same situation happens.

Just because a player is not played in his favourite position (and by the way I think he played that side when he partnered Baker – but feel free to tell me that’s wrong as my memory may be failing) doesn’t mean that he cannot perform basic tasks. He screwed up….full stop. Don’t defend the indefensible.

Changing the subject to Ayew (an earlier disagreement we had), I think he looks a real player. I also agree his best position is lone CF (but he has played as a second striker for his country). Without Gestede though we have no aerial threat. If they could play together it would be great, but maybe that’s not the case.

    1. I agree it’s poor, but still maintain him being played out of position with no cover really hurt him. Especially with Hutton out of position so far up as Richardson was in position and Lescott should be backing Clark.

That’s the thing though we don’t cross without Hutton and Richardson starting. If we had Amavi and Bacuna playing at fullback and Gil/Traore/Grealish playing, we’re a through ball type of side. And Ayew is great on those kinds of runs.

      1. Andrew, sorry your previous comment got modded.
Just another glitch in the spam system mate.

      2. Out of position or not if u look at sky analysis Lescott Richardson and Clarke all in wrong starting positions before Clarke was exposed school boy error the Isabel said under 14s.

  5. Ayew looks like the making of a good player. I would hook Grealish off and give Gill a run out for half an hour.

  6. why is clark on right and not expierenced lescott where is crespo he looked better fit for clark and its why okore should got 30 mins last week, plus where are ilor gana kozak gabbby had 8 touches first half 2 kicking off my 90 gran put in more effort

  7. I’ve seen enough. This team will go down this season. There is no leader on the pitch and never has been since Laurson and Mellberg left.

  8. Apparently we’re looking great now????? WTF!!!?!?!?

  9. remi will see that you improve villa by removing gabby westwood now remove more deadwood get amavi vertout traore in

  10. We need at least six poimts during November. If we don’t get that then we know we’re down.

  11. 3-1 is fair result if we are honest. Our goal came as a result of their complete control and overconfidence. A couple of threats and then they took over again. The 3rd goal we were stretched, but the first two were avoidable. If we don’t stop conceding cheap goals we are stuffed.

  12. Different side with Gil and Ayew playing – why haven’t they been playing regularly? Best thing tonight that Garde got to see the rubbish that is Shabby and who are better players are. Thought Hutton, Sinclair and Sanchez did OK but Richardson and Clark! having said that Guzan didn’t have much to do other than pick the ball out of the net following our normal defensive cock ups! Third goal always likely but at least we finally gave it a go.

      1. I heard that says it all. Lescott and gabby have to go. Have to start with Ayew and gill and amarvi.

        1. It seems that we do have some players who can actually play good football – but they’ve been sidelined for some reason in favour of ‘old stalwarts’ who are long past their use-by date [not that some of them were much use to start with – Lescott and Shabby the obvious ones].

    1. My players to kick out would be, Gabby, Cuzan, Clarke, Westwood, Hutton I’d keep till he’s needed, to be fair we have some good footballers but lack leadership and direction.
