Bristol City – Villa: A preview of sorts and thoughts on things going on

Bristol City away should be a banker and straightaway I think it will be; I’ll say that from the start.

That perhaps seems high-handed on my part, but sorry, Bristol fans, I expect to beat your team, it’s as simple as that. You loaned Nathan Baker, who wasn’t deemed good enough for us at the time, after all?
Except many Villa fans thought he was better than that.

I’ve read that Bristol want to buy/loan him, while many Villa fans don’t even rate him.
So what does that tell us?

Well, to me it demonstrates a gulf in expectations.

While I have the utmost regard for Bristol City, I think this is the sort of game we will have to win if we’re going to show any sign that we’re going to be promoted at the first attempt.

It’s difficult to explain what I mean, but if we really rate the Villa as a class apart from the rest of the Championship along with Newcastle, we have to win this game; it’s as simple as that.

Sadly, I don’t think we’re a class apart at all, although it might come in time.

Which is why I’m hoping that we’ll have enough about us to scrape a 1-0 win.
And that’s my prediction.

  1. Got rid of most of last seasons shite…only 3 days to do same with this seasons.

  2. You can’t turn a club that is so used to losing every week and throwing away the lead every time they have one in a short space of time. It will need time to change the culture and psychology of the place.
Therefore, the fans need to be realistic and realise that no matter what we’ve spent in the context of the championship, there is very little chance of even making the play offs this season.
Mid table this year and then lets challenge for promotion next season. The key is give the club, manager and new players time because anyone expecting promotion this season is deluded imo because they do not recognise the sheer amount of change this club needs. Imagine if Lerner had stayed…. we’d have finish bottom of this league as well…. thats how bad a state we were in

    1. 7 new players plus amavi who only played a few matches, can t blame last season crap most are gone just bacuna westwood few more to go,we need attacking players at least 3 more our bench was horrific no goals on it

      1. Not blaming last season…. the point is changes need time.
If you don’t give them time, you’ll end up with the revolving door of uncertainty just like at Leeds.

    2. We still will be battling relegation without Lerner.

Nobody expects instant magic but getting dicked by Bristol City, c’mon!!

We have I think 7 new players starting, those players never had the losing mentality, in fact they’re pretty damn headstrong individuals.

We’re just crap and as long as RDM persists with the keeper, Westwood and Bacuna, we’ll keep losing.

      1. Agree u can’t have a wet behind the ears keeper and expect to be promoted. Get an experienced keeper in and loan him out he needs to make his mistakes at another club

    1. And if my uncle was my aunt!! RDM is clueless he’s got 2 attacking fullbacks that can’t defend to save their lives which is ok if you have good defensive midfielders to fill in but we havnt. Bacuna is also attack minded so it’s pointless. The leaders we thought we had are obviously not as good as we thought we still collapse when we concede. We have a team that hopes to win games 1.0 which is ok when u get first goal but you have to have the defence and mental resilience. Problem is once we go a goal down to anyone even in this division we may as well go home. Unless we spend more money in the next week and buy some quality in final third then we can forget play offs as we will need to focus on just staying up

  3. You have to give a side time to gel. Most good sides develop together. It seems like we’re trying to buy our way back to the top tier, but I don’t think it will be that easy. Most of these teams in the Championship have played together for a while and have team spirit. We’re just a bunch of individuals at the moment. Need to get shot of Bacuna who is a liability and Westwood who offers very little. Gollini is looking like a liability. Would have been wiser to buy an experienced pair of hands this season. Costing us too many points. Grealish only has half an hour in him and runs out of steam. Ayew looks lively but very little end product. Long way to go. Today was pretty pathetic.

    1. These players weren’t bought in to mould a team for the future, they’ve been hand picked especially for the here and now to hit the ground running. And these players could make an impact. Trouble is, we have a select few players who offer nothing. Its like 8v11 every week. Unsurprising we’re only a point from relegation zone. We need another proven goalscorer and creative midfielder if we stand any chance of playoff’s.

      1. We’ve no strength in depth either. Gestede is a loss imo and if we lose a centre half we’ve only really got baker who’s crap

  4. Spoiling my holiday and it’s only 9am here so can’t even retire to the bar!

Feels at times like we will never have anything to celebrate again.

Bencey and Villain1 – good posts.

Uncle OohAh – don’t crow too much mate – you don’t need to.

    1. I won’t but people need to be realistic. We are nowhere near good enough yet.

      1. Agreed and I for one never expected more than being in and around top ten this season but the clear pattern of failing to convert first half dominance into goals is very worrying.

We do have a much better squad and we’ve seen evidence of us being able to play good quality dominating attacking football but I agree that we are psychologically weak and tend to collapse when we concede a goal. Elphick and Jedinak have to introduce some real steel into the midfield and we still desperately need a creative attacking mid to provide an outlet when the defence is under pressure.

  5. I have ignored most of the pre match predictions on here so far this season – a good job really.
Can remember last season a lot were moaning because the players we bought were ONLY good enough for about 8 off the bottom….whoops..
Its the same now lots expecting far too much……I am sure the last about 6 managers we have go in at half time and have an orange and cuppa and suddenly there’s not enough time to work out with the coaches what they think the other teams plans might be to stop us having another good half and what they will do to harm us…so nothing gets said except just as they run out…O.K. lads just keep it up……I am sending my Gerbil along to BMH to tell them where they are going wrong…..

    1. Probably right but can 6 managers all be wrong? Is it the lack of quality players is it lack of a quality manager or is it both? The club are so demoralised from top to bottom that it really could take ten years plus to get back up. It could get worse before it gets better. All we can hope for this year is mid table and maybe a decent cup run. To win promotion automatically you have to win around 26 games we have won one in 5 so that’s not going to happen. There are at least teams better than us so no chance of playoffs either.

  6. I said it from the start we need a total clear out, Westwood , Bacuna and Ayew ?. Westwood offers nothing in the middle. I am pissed off after todays result, maybe I am looking for a quick fix but that’s not going to happen.

    1. Agreed those 3 should only be on the bench at best. There is no quality in the final third and no one to finish of chances. We need to drop keeper as well and make a cheeky bid for hart on loan. Problem is bunn and steer are rubbish too

  7. We lost and I’m gutted. We have a break now and the transfer window’s still open so we can only hope for better to come.

Still optimistic that we’ll have a reasonable season but I said before the season started that it would take two seasons for us to get back to the Prem.

However I hope I’m wrong and we do it in one. Still 41 games to go.

    1. Thanks for an uplift pat I’m trying my darndist to stay positive & second halves like that is a good kick in the gooleys.like you say 41 to go Utv

    2. Well Newcastke are virtually guaranteed a top 2 spot so we’ve 5 places to play for. But we need at least 3 quality players and a new keeper so unlikely that will happen

  8. We suck don’t deserve the right to wear the kit my dog moves the ball better n he’s 18 weeks old

  9. don’t underestimate the teams like bristol. they just about to sell their main striker. not cause they want too, but they have too. on the otherhand we have been splashing the cash about, snapping up players most championship clubs would like in their squad.

i would like to hear how many villa fans would be willing to swap teams with them, i doubt any would, so really without being a smart ass, villa really should be beating teams like this. norwich and newcastle both managed it.

if i was dr X i would be questioning the signing of the goal.he gives the defense the shits every-time the balls is anywhere near him. 4 million. couldn’t steer have been given a chance. he managed to play a full season in this league and we go out a buy a complete novice. i don’t understand this signing maybe somebody who twitters can ask dr X for me

    1. Dr x should stop playing/selling dance dance revolution machines and x boxes n show us what he knows about football before we drop down another division god dam chinks no nothing exept Chinese food n electric devices

      1. Bet he can fix a washing machine/laptop/microwave chop suey quick football nada knowledge

    2. Problem is bunn and steer are crap too. But our new keeper is learning at our expense then will piss of elsewhere. Stuff that we can’t carry passengers in this division. We need a more experienced keeper with him as an understudy.

    1. Just seen goals he screwed up for first every game he makes a cock up he has to be dropped he has cost about 6 points already ffs

      1. Yeah agree and hopefully that puts a rocket up his arse and sorts it out…..
Cause somewhere there I think could be a good keeper!

        1. Yes potentially he could be a good keeper but we can’t afford to have a keeper learning on the job. He makes to many errors. If a young midfielder makes a mistake we can get away with it when it’s a keeper it’s usually a goal. Can’t afford to have an error prone keeper if that’s the case we may as well have stuck with Guzan what’s the point

      2. give it a rest oohah
what did keeperdo wrong for 1st goal, he pushed shot to side,2nd goal our midfield centre half partedl ike red sea

  10. They just dont believe in themselves, it seems they are not sure of what to do and happening on the pitch, coaching has to improve, we all have a go at players and never the backroom staff. The manager was never my choice but what do i know. It cannot continue please it hurts.

    1. RDM is not my choice either but then there wasn’t really anyone else out there who was any good.

  11. Not seen the game so no comment on the performance but looking at the predictions before the game it appears we (both team and fans) are underestimating the teams in this league and until we wake up and smell the coffee and start battling week in week out and lose this big time Charlie mentality this is going to be a regular occurrence.

    1. and include the bookies to that statment. next time i see villa strong favorites in a game. iam backing the other team.

        1. well they were 7/4 13/8 ish but bare in mind they were at home.plus villa fine away form i must be off my head to back us

          1. Mate their home forms inconsistent but when they’re on it they ain’t a bad side.
I thought we’d lose, had it down as a 1-0 for the reasons I posted above.

          2. form isn’t worth much, is it so early. but when you consider their players and ours news before game they are to lose their top man up front. they lost to both norwich and newcastle.

we will see when the league settles down. but i doubt they will be in the top half. going off our results, i really doubt we will be anywhere near the top half. so check mate

          3. I looked at the results from the back end of last season.
As for us I think we’ll be alright but the playoffs look a more realistic possibility than automatic but then again that could depend on how much the Doc’s willing to throw at it?

          4. look around the championship, most teams in this league are financially destitute. burton blackburn all teams are selling. before todays game bristol withdrew their best striker, is reported to be going to derby for 14mill.

be honest how long do you give RDM. i am beginning to doubt him, i never wanted him, the players we bought. except the goalie have been very good. but results are abysmal luton didn’t just beat us they rocked us out of our stride and were easy winners.

            1. Agree but who else is there that’s any good. I wanted Rodgers or Pearson I still think Pearson will come good at Derby.

          5. I don’t think sacking another manager would solve much, the damage Randy inflicted on the club runs to it’s very foundations.
It’ll take time to turn it around.

          6. Not a big Rodgers fan and Pearson seems to have few anger management issues but what does worry me is RDM’s apparent lack of character.

  12. newcastle have made lots of changes to their squad and 1st team, they are currently on a 3 game winning streak. can’t allow teams to get way ahead of us. this season could continue on, from last season. if we don’t shake off the monkey off our backs

    1. But it’s a new look team & management so don’t see how it can! I’m just a bit puzzled at the mo tbh

      1. Still got players like Westwood bacuna Ayew Lescott spreading their filth in the dressing room. Plus we got rid of one shit keeper and replaced him with another error prone idiot

      1. did you want him bws ,not sure anybody did. i wanted mccarthy or pearson but pearson seems to be struggling at derby (early days )

        1. No mate not really, my Baggies mates didn’t rate him at all but then I wouldn’t have gone with any of the usual suspects.
I’d have gone with Warburton or broke the bank to get Eddie Howe, a manager that builds a club from top to bottom, young, enthusiastic, not your journey men.

  13. then how long is RDM given and can he turn it around. i agree totally with the damage has been done under lerner. its a massive job, we have recruited well with new players. we need a hypnotist or sumat not a manager

  14. Most of our starting lineup weren’t there last season, so I don’t think we can use the excuse of a “losing mentality” anymore.

    1. What’s worrying is we all knew deep down (except for Badger bless him 😄) that 1.0 was never going to be enough. What’s even more worrying is I posted on here just after half time to Badger that we will sit back make an error and they will equalise! That’s exactly what happened. However even more worrying was the way we collapsed after we conceded that goal and even I didn’t see that coming I thought we’d hold on for a draw. It’s worrying because we now how have alleged leaders in the team like Elphnick Chester Jedinek etc where were they? Surely after conceding they were experience enough to clear their heads for 10 mins then go again but they all fell apart too. Also we made the wrong full bk choice we should of bought Yedlin I’m sick of us buying error prone attacking fullbacks RDM has learned nothing

  15. Quique Sanchez Flores was available when Watford sacked him. He’s a much better manager than RDM in my book.

  16. You build teams from the back. I must have written that 5 times in these blogs. If the Keeper plays like that the foundations are cracked and you can build nothing. Number one priority, more important than spending on a striker. Case in point today you would need to buy a guy who scores a hat-trick to win this game 4-3. Have a look at the early Prem table: who is at the bottom? The teams with the worst keepers. Why is Joe Hart on the City scrapheap? Because at the level of Prem winners and CL winners he is the weak link.

At our level we don’t need a Guzan with hair.

    1. Agreed we need to take Gollini out the firing line for his own good and ours then gradually bring him through over the next couple of seasons. We need an established keeper Bunn and steerman r crap also
