Brentford 1 – 0 Villa; So poor I don’t know where to start.

Wow. I find myself stunned after watching that utter, utter load of rubbish.

It was that bad that I honestly can’t find a single redeeming feature.
Looking at that, combined with last week’s non-showing, we have serious problems.

I’ll start at the back. Pau. He is never a defender as long as he has a hole in his proverbial. I reckon I’m probably faster than him and I’m old enough to be his grandad.
We pushed up far too much against a side that has oodles of pace, where we have none.
It was all quite simple and incredibly basic. Sit back, wait for us to give the ball away again and then batter us with pace. I’m sorry, but how Emery allowed this is totally beyond me.

Then Komara gets injured so we put Buendia on. Again, I’m sorry, but I don’t see that as the right move at all. I’d agree that we needed creativity, but it was more on the wings. He can go for me. He’s just not productive enough and never has been for the Villa. Don’t agree? Look at his stats.

Watkins never had a look in, Rogers didn’t look anything like getting into the game and McGinn did nothing.
It was so obvious there was something seriously wrong and Emery did nothing to change it until it was far too late.

So what was going on? I believe Emery likes to give players every chance to hit form. It’s how it works. Players just cannot be at the top of their game all the time. I get that.
But we have too many who look frankly awful and need changing out.

But then, you have to question the tactics too. We played the first half so slowly I nearly fell asleep. Yet we upped the pace in the second half, which is something I’ve noticed is a regular thing. Why is that? Why do we let teams get in first, then have to try to haul things back?
It’s poor, in my opinion.

And even though we picked up the pace, it still looked to me like we wouldn’t score in a month of Sundays.

We look totally toothless and I find that seriously concerning.
We had how many corners? And didn’t get close to scoring.

Brentford must have thought all their birthdays had come at once, while I thought it was that bad, I didn’t even watch the last 10 minutes.
I don’t remember the last time I finished watching a game on the telly early.
I can see it happening more and more too, because what was on show today was nothing like entertaining.

  1. Latest is that we’ve agreed personal terms and are now quibbling about the fee for Georges Mikautadze from Lyon. I remember him from the Euros as he and Kvaratskelia made quite an impression. He’s a striker and is only 24. If true I find it quite an exciting addition.

  2. Now here’s a strange thing – I just knew we would draw Fenerbahce away – it’s the one club I didn’t want to play specifically not away!

Fortunately we’re facing the Israeli team at home although I think they may play their ‘home’ games at a neutral ground.

Overall not a bad draw, I think.

  3. Still no signings despite the brilliant Monchi 😒Massive hint of sarcasm!
Also Mr Glass Onana has sustained a hamstring injury so misses Palace game like Kamara. I guess that leaves Tielemans and McGinn and who? as a number 10.

    1. Rogers. Where he’s supposed to be, instead of how Emery has been playing him.
England call up I see. He’s going nowhere.

  4. So our two defensive midfielders are out – again.

This is turning into a b***dy disaster already!

Will Emery play Torres in one of those two roles – playing Tielemans that deep isn’t going to solve our attacking issues.

    2-0 Palace for me.

  5. John Townley has commented on a busy end to the transfer window. How many more players are going to leave?
Villa 0 Palace 3! Goodbye unbeaten home run in the Premier League.
This season is going from bad to worse. With 2 hamstring injuries on top of the many we have already had, you have to question the training methods.

  6. The writing on the wall I fear, just the going on during the break told me we will struggle in the league. No players in, players sent out on loan, I’m beginning to think we’re on a hiding too nothing, I’ve seen nothing to excite me I just wonder if the waiting list gone down as some fans walk away.

  7. Sky reporting, currently, we have a positive £15m in transfer activity this window so, unless we sell we only have a very limited amount of wriggle room – that is if we want to register new players on the EUFA List A.

Emery has said he doesn’t expect any other player to leave this late and he implied players they were hoping to sell earlier in the window are still with the squad. What does that suggest – the continuing impact of poor financial decision making in the past?

Villa, allegedly, want to make two further signings before Monday’s deadline – but ‘only if they improve the squad’. It seems Emery wants Asensio and the issue is probably more about wages than any fee – but it’s clear that any other incoming(s) would have to be a loan with wages being the primary challenge.

  8. So all we need are players better than we have, who are prepared to take a pay cut and are not considered worth offering a contract to. Right then where does the queue start.

  9. Interesting opinion on Marco Asensio. Returning him to PSG has saved Villa 1.2 Million per month.

  10. Zepiqueno Redmond on loan to Huddersfield. Destined to be another player never to break into first team. I feel sorry for these youngsters who come in but will not be offered the time and opportunity to get to be good enough for premier league. Clubs want first team ready players. Unfortunately we can’t afford to buy them or pay their wages. Sawris and Edens will no doubt lose patience with the fact they can’t spend and they may just walk away, and who could blame them.

  11. Anyone see the “careless challenge” go against Fulham ? This game is beyond a joke now!

    1. Tom I’ve been watching that game, bent as a five bob note that ref. I’ve said it time and time again they must look at what ref goes where to a matches and not save because they are not far to travel, Fulham have been robbed by disallowed goal and not given a pen.

  12. Ok chaps, I’ve just seen the disallowed Fulham goal. I’m done. I wish you all a good winter. I won’t be posting for a good while. I need a break from this shit. The game we used to love is dead. They’ve killed it. I don’t give two shits about Fulham but I can’t take it anymore. I recommend all football fans across the country empty the stadiums in protest against VAR and the way it’s being used to favour some select clubs. If Chelsea score that at the other end it’s given, no doubt. I enjoyed a lovely goal then they take it away. The ref on the mike explaining the decision makes me want to strangle him, or worse. Football’s not fun and exciting anymore; it’s a source of stress and anger, and we have enough of that every day. All the best, lads. It’s been a pleasure. ☹️

  13. That Fulham disallowed goal was a disgrace. VAR is just another toy to make sure the Sky 6 don’t get beat. To add insult to that terrible decision, a Chelsea handball is okay followed by a penalty for a dubious Fulham handball.
The Fulham fans justifiably sang 2-0 to the referee.

  14. I keep checking Villa transfer news and still nothing has happened. Apparently we are linked to Paquetta but £50m+ is what West Ham want, and we won’t be paying that unless Rogers leaves, and with the deadline being Monday 7pm, it’s almost certain that nothing is going to happen. We can’t even get the Asensio deal done and dusted even though no-one else wants him.

  15. See Grealish is ripping it up at Everton.

You can add another loss when we go up there after the IB!

It’s so depressing at present feel rather like BFR – at least I’ll be away for most of September and early October so won’t have to watch – just going to enjoy the trip.

  16. Have you seen the stats for the game at Spuds?

Bournemouth are destroying them – Spuds XG is O into the second half with no shots!

  17. I would love Semenyo at VP. Iraola has got them playing incredible football. I don’t think Semenyo would fit in with Emery’s walking style though. How many Villa fans would want Iraola to come in to replace Emery. I will start it off with yes for me.

  18. Let’s face facts. We do not have the funds to compete with the top 6, so failing that, would we want entertaining football with a coach who can get budget players performing as a team. If Bournemouth had a proven goalscorer, they would be 5-0 up at least.

    1. Surprise, surprise after Fulham also got screwed against Chelsea.

Maybe should rename it VAR sponsored by the Sky 6?

  19. Fear not, we’re about to sign Aberdeens attacking midfielder Fletcher Boyd for (drum roll); £1m plus add ons and he’s 17!

So probably – either we’ll leave him there to the end of the season or loan him out no doubt with a view to increasing his value so we can sell for a profit!

It’s hard to criticise its football that just stinks.

  20. I hear there are some talented young players at the Dog and Duck Sunday team. Or is still a bit premature to send Monchi there scouting!

    1. Maybe Tom but will West Spam agree to a loan plus obligation to buy because we can’t afford to buy him this season.

Also supposed to be looking at CBs but again, unless we can sell another player (Buendia?) we don’t have enough wriggle room to buy.

Villa might be looking at Paqueta as an alternative to Asensio primarily because of the latter’s wages

  21. All this transfer uncertainty, VAR bollocks, bad reffing and PSR is right putting me off this season…

    1. Here’s some more Bum Bum to curdle the milk on your Sunday morning corn flakes!

The Martinez to Manure has reappeared – perhaps the media are getting desperate.

Having said that, I do think Villa are open to selling one more of their first team squad to raise funds and with Bizot looking a safe pair of hands then they may well be prepared to sell.

      1. £60m and he’s theirs. No less. The Chesty links are just boring now. In saying that, it’s VERY early in the season and we should look back at this thread next May for comparisons sake.
I also don’t think our owners will do a runner, far from it. You don’t get that rich and successful by throwing the towel in. I think they’ll be angry and well up for the fight. Again, early days, but nobody looks like a killer side as yet, just some very fluky results. So much for Spuds running away with the league!

This ‘maintaining the status quo’ bollocks is getting more and more obvious though. VAR yesterday was shocking by all accounts… Anyway Palace seem a bit destabilised too so it could be a great match tonight. Not overall keen on the Sunday night 7pm KO.

        1. Don’t think I’ll be able to watch the game – 80th birthday bash this afternoon (not me yet 🙂 ) but it’s next door so maybe I’ll be able to slink off!

The media rumours have gone a bit bonkers although if I was a betting man I might put 5p on Martinez going!

However, contrary to Villa’s normal ‘no show’ on the final day of the transfer window, I suspect they might be rather busy tomorrow!

        2. And I’d prefer €13m for Asensio than £50m for Paqueta who’s only one year younger! That deal would be a sure fire way of losing a lot more money.

  22. Rumoured we’re signing Victor Lindelof who’s out of contract on a two year deal with an option to extend by a year.

Given Villa’s financial tightrope it makes sense – hope he’s better than disaster?

  23. It’s also looking more likely that Martinez is off to Manure but, if so, we don’t want Sanchoz as part of the deal – it should be cash or nothing!

With Bizot looking the part I can’t say it overly worries me.
