Wolves 2 – 1 Villa; The stats flattered us, but no doubt they’re all that matter

As in the headline, you would think we were the better side today if you looked at the stats.
And it’s about as good as an example of why stats can’t be trusted or relied on.
(Which is exactly why I think moneyball is total bollox too).

So, I don’t do stats at all and go on my opinion from what I witnessed.
Which was utter rubbish.

Where do I start?
As has too often been the case, we started brightly, created a bit (with no penetration whatsoever), looked the more threatening side and then conceded as soon as they had a chance, with some shocking defending, yet again.
I’m sorry, but this pattern of play is all to familiar and as much as I try and give optimistic types of opinions, I can’t get away from thinking we are absolute rubbish as a team.

Is it the players?
Well, Konsa and Mings looked like amateurs today, in my opinion.
You can not go into a game with such a lax attitude that you consistently get caught out so early.
Even if I openly admit to not rating Mings in the slightest, I do rate Konsa.
There’s a problem here, somewhere.

Yet again, our midfield offered nothing.
It is set up to be more defensive than attacking, but the players don’t suit that.
We all know McGinn excels for Scotland when he’s blazing forward, pressuring their defence and trying attempts on goal and is probably the main reason the Scots might qualify for the World Cup.
He’s wasted messing around in our third.

It’s similar with all of them.
Ramsey is crap defensively (although he is nicely learning how to stick the boot in, when needed) because it’s not his game.

Luiz, who I really rate as a midfielder is in a similar position and being ripped to pieces for not being a holding midfielder and I think it’s a bloody shame. He quite rightly is sick of being a scapegoat and wants out. I don’t blame him.
You watch him go elsewhere and be valued at £75 mill in short time, imo.

I don’t have much to say about the game, because frankly I’m not interested. We offered very little. Yet again.
I’ve been sort of called out for saying we’re rubbish, but I’m sorry, we are.
All that mattered today was getting three points. Which I actually thought we would.

But I’m taking a bigger view, where I’m looking at the squad.

I think we have the players to get us into Europe.
Yet, again, we look miles away from that.

I’ve given my thoughts about Gerrard; he isn’t my cup of tea.

And here’s my prediction;

We are going to have a big clearout in the summer.
It’s what Gerrard does.
And we’re going to waste another load of money on big money signings sold at low prices (Ings, Watkins, Traore, half the team) and we buy players at inflated prices again.

Dean Smith practically wasted £90 mill and I can’t see past the same sort of thing happening again.
When, oh when will we get a manager who can actually improve what we have, as opposed to ripping it up all the time?

I’m sick of us continually having to change things and never seeing any signs of trying to build something.

I’m becoming seriously bored with the Vila.

Wolves were poor today, but when you have opponents like us, it’s all to easy.

UTV (but I don’t see it at the moment).

It says a lot about what sort of team talk Gerrard gives before the game and at half-time if we concede so early. Mings and Konsa should be better known as Laurel and Hardy. I have lost all faith in Gerrard. 4 defeats in a row, one more and he equals Dean Smith’s record, which led him to be sacked.
Let’s face it, he is totally out of his depth. Just like Lampard, too big a challenge, too soon.
Leading Rangers to the Scottish Premiership carries about as much value as me winning the Pub Dominoes League. Before anyone complains, I am Scottish.I was born in Aberdeen and consider myself well qualified to judge.
I can’t see us improving under Gerrard.

What did I say , No brains in the side, all this 1 -2 will leave the wings open that’s how we got done. Looks good to us fans but you have to know your opponents. We was stuffed. Players out not the manager as they haven’t the brains.

It’s obvious that our defence is in need of a major overhaul. Konsa and Mings days are surely numbered based on Gerrards comments. The second goal especially was embarrassing with Konsa going walkabouts and deserting his position when Kane flicked the ball past him. There was also no sign of a covering midfielder (again) plus Mings has to get closer. Maybe Martinez could have done better too.
The other overhaul has to be a clinical striker. Maybe someone like Archer because Ings has been a complete waste of money. Watkins doesn’t look the same player in a front two so maybe he needs to be sold too unless Gerrard switches his tactics or finds someone who he can link up with.

same as the Wolves match…if we had a forward like Spurs have we would have won both matches…..I know all teams can say that but some time its easier to score.

I think this will be a far-reaching result. Gerrard has only the one Summer window in which he will be backed if he starts with major surgery rather than a couple of new faces. His comments about the players playing for their futures after last week to me indicates he is prepared to sell a majority of the players who started v Spurs. He has to cut out the chronically poor finishers, and those with big mouths and a losing mentality.

Cash Martinez Coutinho Buendia are probably safe on merit, Digne because Gerrard bought him – but he seems injury prone. Douglas-Luiz might get a second chance because he is playing in the wrong slot but I think he is also vulnerable. The rest are in the shop window. Before today SG said Mings’ captaincy was under review – I think he is a goner.

After a big clear out – if players like Watkins, McGinn and Mings go – then the manager is staking his reputation on the incoming experienced players and some of our promising youngsters showing a visible improvement in results.

I can’t say I disagree with any of that but maybe McGinn’s a big call?
But then again if the price is right.

OLL/Ron, in agreements on both post but McGinn although his form has slipped over this season and playing out of his natural position I would hold on to, Luiz is marmite to me good and bad performance this season, our defence along with our strikers need replaced now, show us the likes of Archer Chukie, with some of the others he’s farmed out .the games we’ve lost would have been better seeing them youngsters play we wouldn’t be hurt so much like its done over this season.
