Aston Villa Vs Tottenham – Preview

Aston Villa host Tottenham in this round of the League Cup. Both teams are expected to make massive changes due to fitness concerns over numerous amount’s of players. Aston Villa progressed into this round by beating Rotherham 3-0, while Tottenham automatically qualified due to their Premier League position last season.

Paul Lambert may give starts to Steer, Sylla, Bennett, Helenius and Kozak who are yet to start in the Premier League this season, Lambert has mentioned that he will prioritise the League over the League Cup. Tottenham manager Villas-boas plan’s to do the same, he was furious at the scheduling of the Tottenham game, which resulted in the team play 3 games in 6 days. He mentioned that no one from Sunday’s game will feature tonight due to fitness concerns.

Team News:
Aston Villa have several injury concerns ahead of this game. Christian Benteke will miss this game due to a hip injury suffered in last weekends Norwich game. While Agbonlahor, Delph, Luna and Clark have all picked up slight knocks and may also miss out. Westwood remains a doubt. Okore, N’Zogbia and Gardner all remain out through long-term injuries.

Tottenham will rotate the squad, but only Rose and Defoe remain serious injury doubts.

Match Facts:
The two clubs have met four times in the League Cup, with Aston Villa winning on the last two occasions in 1987 and 1994.
Aston Villa haven’t beaten Tottenham since September 2008, they have played 9 times since then.
They have only conceded one goal to date – Olivier Giroud’s winner for Arsenal.

Predicted Lineups:

Steer
Lowton-Vlaar-Baker-Bennett
Weimann-Sylla-El Ahmadi-Tonev
Helenius
Kozak

Kane
Lamela-Chadli-Lennon
Sandr0-Holby
Naughton-Kaboul-Chiriches-Walker
Friedel

Predictions:
Aston Villa 0-2 Tottenham

Tottenham are favourites for a reason, I  change the entire Spur’s first team and it’s still really strong. Aston Villa might’ve had an extra day of rest but if a young, inexperienced defence has to face Lamela, Chadli and Lennon it’s never going to be easy. I hope Aston Villa can get a good result and continue their League Cup run, but it’s going to be massively difficult. Aston Villa even play worse at home!

Villa will never move forward with Lerner and lambert this is a disgrace new signings are shit we cant pass, defend one man team ive had enough I wont rest until Lerner gone time to put pressure on him to sell up this is worst than eillis hit were it hurts boycott games and if any one says that would hurt the team we dont excautally cheer them on at home do we boycott all games get that American out

      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Agree but Lerner won’t give a fuck now they have sold over 20,000 STs and most if the money is now generated by sponsorship and sky. The fans money is just not that imp in the grand scheme of things now not just with villa but with any club

    2. Badger123 avatar

Villa1996, I always cheer the team on when I’m there, so you speak for yourself mate.
I can’t believe we lost this one 4-0 though. We’re at home, after all.
Totally gutted and I haven’t even seen the team sheets.
This just should not be happening and is very worrying.

As for those who say it doesn’t matter; it bloody matters to me.
A club of our standing should NEVER be thrashed at home, as far as is possible.

  3. On a positive note at least Lambert will pick them up and go again!!! Even his fuckin press conferences are as predictable as our style of play!!!

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Forget the pick them up just go!

  4. We could see how strong Spurs second team is and we can´t compete. Only positive thing were good performances by Albrighton and Baker.
We have to accept that we don´t have the depth in quality. We rely on Benteke, Gabby, Delph and Guzan. We can´t compete without them.
Young Robinson were coming on lately and showed some promise. I wonder if we couldn´t find all this Helenius and Bacuna´s in our own youth set-up.
We have no proper game plan for our home games. We are sitting too deep and we have to close down our opponents. We have to pressurize them at home but we are playing with fear. Next one Man City: we have nothing too loose so maybe..?

  5. I’ve given in lads, cannot see where we are going, anyone want to buy a Villa football kit with a season ticket. Plus a car with the Villa plate , £20,000.

  6. villa1996 avatar

Can someone give me a reason any reason to bother supporting villa or football in general? Whats the point? I dont want to frinsh 17th I want to challenge at the top not get outplayed by everyone every week

    1. There really isn’t one. Blind loyalty doesn’t work in the modern day where attending and following club is a very expensive past time and why should the fans bother when the owner doesn’t communicate or set out his plans to the fanbase.
We’re regressing down the pecking order, our squad looks embarrassing when compared to Spurs nowadays. Daniel Levy, like him or not, has done a great job in establishing Spurs, the less said about Lerner and Faulkner the better.

        Spot on villain 1

  7. Always depressing to see how far ahead of us Spurs are, they can bring in the likes of Holtby, Lamela, Paulinho and Defoe for their 2nd team, whilst we have to rely on the “quality” of Mark Albrighton and Joe Bennett. Says it all really.
Another home defeat beckons on Saturday v City, I’ll be surprised if we win more than a couple at home all season. We simply suck at Villa Park and its been that way for far too long.

  8. villa1996 avatar

We want lerner out we want lerner out we want lerner out well the real aston villa please stand up

  9. It’s a long road back to the higher echelons of the league lads.we have to stay with it. If we could turn our home form around so it matched our away form we would be getting there. Lambert needs to find that formula for home games as it’s not working at the moment. Sylla was quality today though I thought which is good I think he could be our dm for years to come.

  10. villa1996 avatar

Lambert hasn’t got a clue we had 3 managers from the Scottish league and they all be shit broaden your horizon Lerner

  11. villa1996 avatar

The way villa played tonight was like a league two side against premier league lambert turned us into a league two side, I fear playing anyone now

      Benteke out for 6 weeks

  12. Same shit different day ! Another humiliation ! Fans are beginning to realise that enough is enough. We are in transition from being shit to being a laughing stock. Fans are being conned by Lerner there is no plan other than cost cutting all this ‘ young and hungry’ shit is a con its all about saving money. Lerner is destroying the club and its time fans pulled their heads out of the sand and drive this useless turd of an owner out of Aston Villa football club. After 7 1/2 years of the twat we are worse than when he arrived. Wakey wakey Villa fans

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Agree mate. With Benteke out for 6 weeks darren be t anyone!!

      1. The guy 90% of the forum was bagging on constantly for being shite and lazy and wanted gone, is now the player they want back. And then people couldn’t see why Kozak was bought. Mind-boggling.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

I’d rather have bent for Kojak any day. Fwiw I was one if the few who said we Shoukd keep bent

          1. I would too, don’t get me wrong as I wanted him to stay too. But it’s getting clearer and clearer to people, or should be, why Kozak was bought. He’s our only other striker bar Bowery.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

True but I still wish wed of kept bent he does exactly what he says on the tin and his goals kept us up 2 seasons running. Fuck the work rate weimann works hard as fuck and how many has he scored this season ffs

          2. Yeah but then Bent’s a striker and Weimann’s the creator. Wouldn’t have Bent and Benteke playing together. Weimann’s also been way off form.

fuckin hell lads it wasn’t that bad! the result was very flattering to spurs cmon?! 4-0!
lets be objective for a minute, anyone who thought we were gonna win this were mad, we started the game against a team would are title contenders this season, they’ve lost 1 all season and conceded only 1 goal! but aside from all that we had to field a weakened squad due to injuries including our without doubt start striker.
once we went 2 down after missing out on what was surely a pen all we could do was try and attack meaning we were always open to being hit on the break so the final score is misleading as the last half hour we loked the more likely to score.
there was good effort out on the pitch but when they can replace paulinio with dembele what the fuck can we do? at 2 nil down, with loads of our best players out?……..really, get a grip!

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Firstly it was their B that beat us secondly they will not win the league CL place maybe thirdly we lost 4.0 at home to them second time in succession. Conceding 4 goals to anyone is appalling. We still can’t defend we are still n. better as a team or defensively than last year and to top it all Benteke is out for 6 weeks his replacement look like a complete pile of cheap shite which they are and that known lamberk sells bent fuckin joke of a club

      1. Vertonghen, Walker, Paulinho, Lamela are not their B team, they’re starters. Defoe is rotated with Soldado, so hardly a B team player. Chiriches just got back from injury and was tipped to start the season but couldn’t, not a B team player. Holtby was a starter till Eriksen came in, so hardly a B team player. The only real B team players they played, were Kane and Fryers. The rest are either starters or will be rotated into the starting team…

  14. Agreed though Naughtius. I see a lot of people claiming this was Spurs 2nd team, it wasn’t. They had at least 5 usual starters playing, plus brought on a couple more. They made a couple changes but nothing as big as what Villa were forced to do. And the penalty Villa didn’t get resulted in their goal which shouldn’t have happened and would have changed the game.

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Well we had at least 6 first team regulars from last season ffs. The spurs team tonight would still of beat our starting 11 on Saturday at least 3.0

  15. villa1996 avatar

No benteke for 6 weeks were be bottom by then we are awful lerner needs to go how can fans be so stupid 4 years embarrassing defeats its the worst villa team ever wake up fellow fans lerner need s to go

    1. Uhm, and who’s going to buy Villa? You? LERNER’S NOT LEAVING… I don’t get why people can’t understand this. It’s common sense at the very moment.

      1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
        OohAhPaulMcGrath

We know he s not leaving but dosnt mean to say we have to be happy about it

        1. Of course not, but repeating the same thing over and over again is complete nonsense. Having a go once at Lerner, fine. It’s like the 3rd time in his last 5 posts he’s mentioned Lerner out. It’s not going to happen.

          1. Like a tourette riddled idiot.

    2. The same Lerner who spends at least 20M+ each season on transfer spending and has made Villa the #1 youth academy in the UK? We should be praising Lerner for his achievements as well.

      1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
        OohAhPaulMcGrath

The same Lerner who now spends fuck all sells our best players and replaces them with utter shite. Tonev bacuna helenius Luna ffs all shit. Big clubs are judged on their forst team not the youth team ffs

        1. Those 4 have hardly been given the chance. Bacuna and Luna don’t look shit at all. As said, give Luna cover which he never gets which is why he’s always targeted to get triple teamed and he’ll prove to be quality enough. Helenius has struggled a bit but he’ll get there and Tonev needs to calm it down, looked better today than against Norwich.

    3. Your’e like a broken record.

  16. The sky is not falling.

We lost to a better team, there is no shame in that. With a record of 0-9 against Spurs this loss should come as no surprise. The fringe and new players had a proper run out, we saw a new formation, and played with actual wingers in the first half. All things we wanted, sadly it didn’t work out any better.

Robinson was a surprise but did well. Tonev was lively at the end and had a great strike on goal in the second half. Baker looked fit and solid at times, hopefully his fitness holds up. All-in-all, the game doesn’t mean much. If anything it reinforces the issue that we need another creative midfielder (Gardner maybe?) as well as shows what we need to work on in training – passing. Our upcoming fixtures will be tough but the closer we get to November/December the squad should hit a streak of good fortune.

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

But wev lost 3 home games in a row conceding 7 and scoring once and the goal scorer is out for 6 weeks. Ffs can’t u see we are in big trouble

      1. Nope, reason? the EPL’s quality is lowering. While a few clubs have gotten better, like Spurs, the overall quality of the EPL hasn’t and despite losing 3 games, Villa sit 13th, with 6 goals scored and 6 conceded, after the hardest start of any team. Don’t really think we’re in big trouble as we’ll still beat a fair few clubs on the road which will be enough, sadly. Although the games aren’t entertaining at all to watch.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

Not as hard a start as utd who played city Chelsea Swansea away ad Liverpool. The 2 so called easy games Newcastle we lost and Norwich we won but didn’t deserve to.

          1. We scored, Norwich didn’t, how didn’t we deserve too? They had I believe 2 shots on target.

Norwich away is just as hard as Swansea away, as Norwich never lose at home, bar to us apparently.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

Because they were still the better team for most if the match they still had a pen and a good chance in last few minutes plus a couple of goalmouth scrambles they were unlucky not to score from. Today v spurs they had 8 shots on target to our 2 a d we are the home team ffs

          2. But that doesn’t mean that we didn’t deserve to win. We scored, Norwich didn’t. They had a penalty, it was saved, they ruined their 1 good chance at scoring, that’s their fault and weren’t unlucky (luck doesn’t exist) not to score, they failed miserably.

Today Spurs were clearly better, Spurs are clearly better than Norwich. Even as a home team we were going to get beaten by Spurs, our first or second team to mostly their first team. They have a far better Manager and were able to spend over 100m on a squad after selling a player for 100m Euros. It’s probably not fair but that’s Football.

      2. We are only 5 games into the season, anything can happen. So while I am concerned about our home form and the news of Benteke is not good, I really do not think we are in big trouble yet. We still have options and the season is still young.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

What are these great options then marvin

          1. As long as Gabby and Wiemann stay fit they can come from anywhere. Both players are our creative unit at the moment.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

Remind me again how many gabby and weimann have scored this season!!

          2. Ask Benteke, without their service and creative spark half of his goals would be nonexistent. If we can keep these two fit and creating opportunities we should be fine.

          3. Well put Marvin. Weimann assisted Luna’s goal against Arsenal, Gabby assisted Benteke’s goal against Chelsea, Kozak’s winner against Norwich. Those 2 are our only creators at the moment and Benteke wouldn’t have the goals without them.

      3. wasn’t it only a few days ago that someone said on this very site that you cant tell how far we have come from a meaningless cup game. get behind the club , your comments do more harm than good i know we all feel the pain but man up and accept it we were beaten by a better team and a few quirky decisions

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

What was the excuse at home to Newcastle then

          1. A really bad game? Teams have those…

          2. that’s just a cop out response i can take criticism of my club so long as you have constructive answers other than were crap and lerners sold us down the river im no business man but if this was intentional to make more money then it must be a new secret plan that no one else has thought of

  17. villa1996 avatar

Have villa fans got short memory’s we were om a par with Tottenham until lerner sold us down the river we should be completed with the likes of Tottenham we deserve better than this

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Exactly which was the beginning of the end for MON Lerner quite rightly saw were spurs were on a much lower wage bill than MON put our ridiculous old timers on Amd do t forget how long their co tracts for ffs.

    2. But Spurs were constantly selling players and were struggling, as are we now. We just don’t have a player to sell for 100m, we don’t have more than 1 owner, Spurs are owned by a couple of investors who can put money into the team, plus a new stadium. We don’t have a manager to bring in the likes of Lamela, you really think someone as good as Lamela would come in under O’Neill? Or someone like Eriksen, of course not. Under Houllier, yes, but AVB’s a far more respected manager, they have a new sporting director who’s well respected in South America which is why they can bring the likes of Lamela and Paulinho. We have neither.

  18. Naughtius Maximus avatar
    Naughtius Maximus

so walker, vertongan, dembele, paulinio, dawson, holtby and sandro are b team are they?

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

We had vlaar, bennet, baker, lowton, sylla and kea all first team regulars this year.

      1. Not so far, Sylla and Bennett aren’t.

  19. villa1996 avatar

Ok hands up who likes villa at the moment and is happy with lerner running of the club? No hands up I rest my case

    1. What’s your point?

  20. Naughtius Maximus avatar
    Naughtius Maximus

sorry I forgot defoe, he plays for England doesn’t he?

  21. So Okore out for the season and Benteke out for 6 weeks…all we need now are injuries/suspensions to Guzan and Delph and we’ll be set!!

  22. Naughtius Maximus avatar
    Naughtius Maximus

I know ooah but your stating we got beat by a b team and that is clearly bollocks! isn’t it?

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Ok last season we got beat 4.0 at home at least by their first team now we get beat 4.0 at home by their B team doses it really matter bottom line is we are still shit end off

  23. villa1996 avatar

Fulham got sold recently so there are buyers out there Andrew were just a pension for Lerner were a shadow of a club were dead as club lifeless what happened?

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Just seen the goals on Ssn defending was woeful and yet again we concede from a corner. Just awful

    2. And they spent 5m after they sold the club… Woohoo?

  24. villa1996 avatar

Try telling lambert and hes lemmings that

    1. I meant, they didn’t spend much at all, and they were sold in early July so had more than enough time to spend. They spent like 8m total all summer.

  25. Naughtius Maximus avatar
    Naughtius Maximus

i’ll say again just in case it isn’t quite clear enough.
once we were 2-0 down they were always going to hit us on the break but its a cup match what were we supposed to do? the same thing happened to united against city.
the score line is deceiving and flattering.
im not for a minute saying its all sunshine and roses but here we go again, lambert out learner out, villa out!
