Villareal and a last minute stop off at the Mestalla

So my daughter ended up being able to book tickets for the game after I’d tried numerous times on my desktop and failed. In retrospect, I think it was my constant refusal to accept cookies which might have been the problem. Whatever, we got to the game eventually.
This was a game of convenience all round really. Matchday was the twins’ 18th birthday and it had long been their clan’s wish to go to Benidorm, after being massive fans of the programme with that name. So they booked a week there and we stayed the night after the game, reducing the 3 hour plus drive.

Me, well I’ve wanted to take in a Spanish game since I bought here and my thinking was probably Elche, but Valencia’s ground, the Mestalla strongly appealed. And when the lads told me they were going to stop off to take a look there, on the way, I wasn’t arguing and decided to do the same.

When we arrived, I was immediately impressed with how big the ground is! Villa park is of course quite a big ground and the Mestalla is probably similar, but it’s quite a bit higher. If you get in the right position you can see the banks of seating and the noticeable thing there was the steepness of the terrace. It reminded me of the seating in the old Filbert street, where I was actually concerned that if you were to trip down the steps, you’d have a job stopping.
So after a walk around the ground and some regrets about not having got there earlier, as you could pay on the door for a tour, we did have enough time for a swift pint literally a hundred feet from the ground. That went down well. The lads had ticked off another ground visited and were well happy, so we carried on to the Estadio de la Ceramica, home of Villareal.

The notable thing of the ceramica is again it’s size, but for different reasons. When you consider the town’s population is about 47,000 at most, the ground capacity is 23,000. Oviously, that’s down to the pull of La Liga, but it’s the equivalent of Villa park having a 500,000 limit. Ridiculous, but I find it an interesting thought, anyway.
I wondered why I’d never heard of the name of the ground and a bit of research showed it’s because it was previously known as the Madrigal, which I’d definitely heard of.
It was renamed afer it’s refurbishment and the latter means it’s very presentable.
On entering the ground, it wasn’t anywhere as sold out as the ticket map on the web made it seem, which was a bit annoying, but hey ho, you could see/hear that it probably makes for a great atmosphere on Europe nights. Six of us managed to sit together, whereas we thought we were going to be scattered all over the terrace, which meant we could all discuss our usual thoughts as the game progressed.

Down to the actual game then and I very much enjoyed it, as opposed to the Liverpool away game, which I left early, feeling quite sorry for myself and wandering why I’d bothered going in the middle of winter. I think the 30 odd degree heat helped there and seeing players stopping for drinks breaks at 9.30 pm seemed a bit surreal.

It was all played in a friendly manner, which I gather was much better than the Marseilles massacre on the previous night and I think I can sum the game up quite quickly and just say that we won, but I’m not convinced we deserved to. Villareal missed two absolute sitters and we all agreed they possibly could have got a third.
Ollie and Emi got our two goals after some nice shooting, but it wasn’t so much about the result to me. It was more about how sharp we look and tactics. On both points, I can’t say I was enamoured. I still think we look really poor in defence. I pointed out Maatsen, who I am really not at all convinced about and said to my SIL that I think he’s useless as a defender. I admit he’s decent going forward, which is the modern way, but for my money it puts too much onus on the centrebacks and we looked decidely dodgy again.
Anyway, when you actually concentrate on the Dutchman’s performance, you notice it can be littered with mistakes and poor positioning. Still Emery likes him and he sees the stats etc, so what do I know?
We still play this, at times, flowing forward play with sharp passing, only for a player to stop and play the ball back 30 yards, giving the opposition time to regroup and it frustates the heck out of me.

While it might seem like I’m moaning, It’s more just me being critical.
The aim of the game is to score more goals than the opposition, simple. We did that and I actually enjoyed it too. Football is a game where you should feel entertained and I left feeling as though I’d got my nearly 50 Euros worth.

Leaving the ground saw a friendly atmosphere all round and the picture above with the twins and the old fella summed it all up very nicely.

Newcastle next and I’ll be writing something about that when I’ve actually pondered the game.

Trossard for Villa? Maybe in answer to ‘Who has any cash left? Oh, Villa have just got some.’ Yet another forward seems unlikely unless Bailey is already under offer. Trossard is a clever player but surely more suited to the Irons? He is also short and we are losing height faster than a Lead Zepplin, leaving us vulnerable at set pieces.

    1. Loosing height??
Roger’s, Guessand, Onana, Mings, Pau, Konsa, off the top of my head all well over 6ft. I actually thought our team was looking like one of the most physical and athletic .

Spurs had 9 over 6ft in their last starting 11. Villa have the following under 6 ft. Cash, Maatsen, Buendia, McGinn, Tielemans.

        1. I’d argue 2 possibly 3 of those names would walk into sours starting 11

  2. Also Watkins under 6ft….

Me and Badger both under 6’ so everyone looks tall to us 😂

But then again isn’t there something about perfection being delivered in small packages?

      5’6 here. 🤣

I want a hefty defender, personally. Pau can go, as he’s poor imo.
Yes, he can distribute, but I want players who look like they might actually defend well.
Two top defenders, left and right, would be even better.
Otherwise my prediction is firmly that we will go backwards this season. Maybe 9th-10th.

Agreed. I thought Garcia might be fancied but looks like he won’t be and we can’t keep playing Konsa at RB. Either a right sided defender or CB. Although based on pre-season it looks like Emery might fancy Bogarde as backup. It’s probably time to play him or sell him at his age.

Everyone seems to be writing us off including our own fans. I think we’ll have a solid season. Everyone is expecting a nailed on top 4 of Liverpool, Chelsea, Citeh and Arsenal. Then ManUre and Spuds are expected to muscle in and well as the BarCodes.
I think we’ll break the top 4 quietly again. We have a settled side and just need a bit of luck with injuries.

Yes, it’s interesting that there’s an element of our own fans that have a negative view of this season. It’s possible of course – look at Spuds and Manure last yet they overpowered the Europa League!

Phil McNulty still rates is primarily because of Emery’s influence as an elite coach and predicts 5th with Newcastle, Spuds and Manure immediately behind us. He’s been pretty accurate with his previous forecasts.

I think we’ll finish top 8 and will be in a battle with the above three clubs for 5th – 8th spot so all to play for.

I want to see us win a trophy this year – The Europa League is the main one for me but I’d take either of the two domestic cups or how about all three 🙂

    Atalanta sniffing around Maatsen???

  8. I think the same as Badger and somewhere around 8th or 9th for me. Pau is a poor defender and Mings could easily get injured with the trauma of 2 x ACL’s. Cash also is a poor defender although i like his attitude and commitment. A lot depends on Konsa playing CB but we haven’t improved our defence from last season. Remember the number of times the opposition scored with their first shot on goal. 8 teams had a better goals conceded than us with Palace the same. Also 8 teams scored more than us with Forest and Bournemouth scoring the same. With those stats, it’s surprising we finished 6th.
My feeling is we can pick a very strong starting XI but after that, we do not have much depth compared to the top 4. Man Ure and Spurs are a lot stronger this season and i think the barcodes have an overall better squad despite Isak throwing his dummy out the pram. If Palace can hold onto the likes of Eze and Guehi, i think they will also be pushing hard for European places.
We need to hit the ground running at Villa Park. Didn’t we lose our first home game last season against Arsenal? We have a lot of games early on where we can get a lot of points on the board before we meet Spurs, Citeh and Pool.

That defensive record HAS to be something we’ve worked on close season. I’d be shocked at no improvement in this area.

  9. Aston Villa have been fined £125k after accepting breaches of the Premier League’s ‘multiball rules’ in 5 matches last season.
    A complete joke!

Whilst in the meantime City have 110 alleged financial breaches outstanding.

No doubt the EPL and Citeh are working on an exercise to exonerate them on every one!

I didn’t even know multiball was part of the rules.
And I know even less about how we broke the rules.
So what was it? Not enough balls? Not changing them out quick enough?

Still thinking about what to write about tomorrow, but I will write something.

Here’s an article from MOMS that explains it.

As they say it was avoidable but the sanction defies logic – it is the EPL after all that seem to enjoy bashing those clubs not in the elite financial positions!

In my view some of the breaches are just laughable! Perhaps we need to employ professional ball boys and girls?

In Unai’s press conference he says that we are not contenders to be top seven with the budget we have. That seems pretty honest although he does tend to play down our chances. Maybe he feels it gives an advantage to ‘fly under the radar’ somewhat?

If he honestly thinks we are so constrained financially, I wonder why he hasn’t been courted by a ‘richer’ club?

  12. “In light of the Club’s repeated breaches and frequent reminders from the League, it is the League’s view that breach (5) was intentional (i.e. the Ball Assistants were acting deliberately and under instruction), with no other reason than to attempt to affect passages of play for the benefit of the Club.”

    Such BS.

It gets funnier lads…Spuds about to demand we give them Morgan Rogers for £4.25 and a bag of sticks! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think Unai is playing a quiet game here. He defo wants teams to underestimate us at their peril. Anyone want a fiver on us being top 5 over Christmas?????
