Villareal and a last minute stop off at the Mestalla

So my daughter ended up being able to book tickets for the game after I’d tried numerous times on my desktop and failed. In retrospect, I think it was my constant refusal to accept cookies which might have been the problem. Whatever, we got to the game eventually.
This was a game of convenience all round really. Matchday was the twins’ 18th birthday and it had long been their clan’s wish to go to Benidorm, after being massive fans of the programme with that name. So they booked a week there and we stayed the night after the game, reducing the 3 hour plus drive.

Me, well I’ve wanted to take in a Spanish game since I bought here and my thinking was probably Elche, but Valencia’s ground, the Mestalla strongly appealed. And when the lads told me they were going to stop off to take a look there, on the way, I wasn’t arguing and decided to do the same.

When we arrived, I was immediately impressed with how big the ground is! Villa park is of course quite a big ground and the Mestalla is probably similar, but it’s quite a bit higher. If you get in the right position you can see the banks of seating and the noticeable thing there was the steepness of the terrace. It reminded me of the seating in the old Filbert street, where I was actually concerned that if you were to trip down the steps, you’d have a job stopping.
So after a walk around the ground and some regrets about not having got there earlier, as you could pay on the door for a tour, we did have enough time for a swift pint literally a hundred feet from the ground. That went down well. The lads had ticked off another ground visited and were well happy, so we carried on to the Estadio de la Ceramica, home of Villareal.

The notable thing of the ceramica is again it’s size, but for different reasons. When you consider the town’s population is about 47,000 at most, the ground capacity is 23,000. Oviously, that’s down to the pull of La Liga, but it’s the equivalent of Villa park having a 500,000 limit. Ridiculous, but I find it an interesting thought, anyway.
I wondered why I’d never heard of the name of the ground and a bit of research showed it’s because it was previously known as the Madrigal, which I’d definitely heard of.
It was renamed afer it’s refurbishment and the latter means it’s very presentable.
On entering the ground, it wasn’t anywhere as sold out as the ticket map on the web made it seem, which was a bit annoying, but hey ho, you could see/hear that it probably makes for a great atmosphere on Europe nights. Six of us managed to sit together, whereas we thought we were going to be scattered all over the terrace, which meant we could all discuss our usual thoughts as the game progressed.

Down to the actual game then and I very much enjoyed it, as opposed to the Liverpool away game, which I left early, feeling quite sorry for myself and wandering why I’d bothered going in the middle of winter. I think the 30 odd degree heat helped there and seeing players stopping for drinks breaks at 9.30 pm seemed a bit surreal.

It was all played in a friendly manner, which I gather was much better than the Marseilles massacre on the previous night and I think I can sum the game up quite quickly and just say that we won, but I’m not convinced we deserved to. Villareal missed two absolute sitters and we all agreed they possibly could have got a third.
Ollie and Emi got our two goals after some nice shooting, but it wasn’t so much about the result to me. It was more about how sharp we look and tactics. On both points, I can’t say I was enamoured. I still think we look really poor in defence. I pointed out Maatsen, who I am really not at all convinced about and said to my SIL that I think he’s useless as a defender. I admit he’s decent going forward, which is the modern way, but for my money it puts too much onus on the centrebacks and we looked decidely dodgy again.
Anyway, when you actually concentrate on the Dutchman’s performance, you notice it can be littered with mistakes and poor positioning. Still Emery likes him and he sees the stats etc, so what do I know?
We still play this, at times, flowing forward play with sharp passing, only for a player to stop and play the ball back 30 yards, giving the opposition time to regroup and it frustates the heck out of me.

While it might seem like I’m moaning, It’s more just me being critical.
The aim of the game is to score more goals than the opposition, simple. We did that and I actually enjoyed it too. Football is a game where you should feel entertained and I left feeling as though I’d got my nearly 50 Euros worth.

Leaving the ground saw a friendly atmosphere all round and the picture above with the twins and the old fella summed it all up very nicely.

Newcastle next and I’ll be writing something about that when I’ve actually pondered the game.

Oops, I’ll post a couple of pics shortly.
    All very enjoyable though.

  2. Are Garcia and Ramsey on the way out? I assume Guessand replaces Ramsey but who would cover for Cash? If we lose two players and don’t sign anyone else, I think we will be in a difficult situation if we lose a few players through injury.

Don’t know about Garcia but it seems Ramsey might leave if the right offer comes in. Villa are reluctant to allow him to run down his contract (2 years left) and, so far, it seems he’s reluctant to sign a new one.

It’s rumoured that the barcodes are interested and given the financial (EUFA SCR) restrictions Villa are under then £50m (all profit) would be mightily helpful. If he was sold, a further loan deal for Asensio might follow?

Going back to Garcia – Emery might be looking for a loan player that can play either CB or RB although Bogarde has played there. It seems, despite Garcia’s initial positive input, that Emery may not fancy him.

We definitely need to unload Dendonker and probably Moreno as he seems to have lost some of his pace following his injury. The other ‘big’ money possibility remains Bailey.

      Hitchens60

Just a quick add – Bailey signed in the summer transfer window 2021 for c £30m. Assuming he was on a five year contract then his cost in the books after amortisation would be around £6m meaning a good profit could be made from his sale with decent back up already in the squad.

      1. But I doubt they can get 30 million for him, Hitch. 20 would be a good deal, anything more a bonus, based on last season’s showing.

        1. Hitchens60 avatar
          Hitchens60

Agreed BFR – I was quoting the purchase price as a base for calculating the net cost still on the books were we to sell him. Clubs do pay silly money at times!! Even £20m would return us a fair profit on his current book cost.

I’m assuming that EUFA use the amortised amounts when calculating transfers in as to whether we have a positive balance after all transfers over the summer window.

    2. Selling Ramsey would be Cahill mk2: big mistake. I’ve been critical of him for the last 2 seasons because I believe he’s got way more in the locker that’s ready to be unleashed, based on what he showed before the injury; he still hasn’t peaked, nowhere near. He needs a run of games and to feel loved and trusted; that’s the tricky part because with 6 forward players (7 including Bailey), it’s hard to please everyone; having said that, with 2 games a week from September, if Unai rotates smartly, there should be 90 minutes a week for all the ‘top’ performers; that’s ideal to keep everyone fresh. It’s tricky because you can’t tell Ollie you’ll start all PL games but no Europe and Ramsey you’ll start in Europe but not the PL. Players have to trust the manager and understand that at a top club, you’re not guaranteed to start. The only way to guarantee that is to take a step down, so if that’s what JJ wants, West Ham would be ideal. Be careful what you wish for. My advice would be knuckle down and when you get your chance (which you will), show the manager what you’ve got and help the team win games; that’s how successful teams/clubs have always operated.

As a side note, it would appear Garcia has been ‘binned’ by Unai.

  4. …so the barcodes are in for Ramsey? If he thinks he’ll start every game there, he’s very much mistaken. Barnes and Gordon have warmed the bench for long periods of seasons. It’s a side-step. All I can think is he wants more cash and is willing to leave his club to get it. Not impressed, to be honest.

  5. Anyone else fancy Palace for the Europa Conference League?

  6. Hitchens60 avatar
    Hitchens60

Ramsey to the barcodes and Asensio back to Villa on loan both gaining traction.

See what unfolds over the coming week

    1. That’s a shitty cost-cutting, profit-making, short-termism deal, in my opinion. See selling Der Hammer and replacing with an ageing Patrick Berger, amongst many others when times were lean. I don’t like to see the Villa playing with these equations; it’s shit and smacks of ‘small-time.’

  7. I don’t see any point in bringing in Asensio unless they have plans to sell Rogers. Also Buendia I think will offer more than Asensio.
My wish is for us to keep everyone except Bailey and sign another CB. Then I think we will have enough to get through till January.

    1. Exactly right, Holte; that would be the ideal scenario.

  8. Where’s RSS these days, btw; I’d be interested to hear your thoughts, mate…

    1. Hi mate, you ok?
The close season bores me to tears, all speculation more speculation sprinkled with a liberal helping of BS just does my nut in Ron.
Roll on Saturday matey and just hope we’ve learned from last season and don’t let those Magpie’s bully us all over the park (again).

      1. Looking forward to Saturday too, mate. Not watched any footy whatsoever since the United game so very much ready to go! It will be a great atmosphere and a great match, no doubt. If Ramsey plays, he will score, which will be the first batch of eggs in our faces…

    Hitchens60

In modern football, decisions are driven as much by financial considerations as footballing ones – whether we like it or not. And comparing Asensio with Berger is like comparing apples with prunes!

    1. If you’re hungry, you’d eat either…
It’s not the players, Hitch; it’s the scenario, specifically the age. You’re losing a class player that could give you minimum 6 excellent years and getting what? A loanee who’s been there and done it – sounds like a perfect comparison to me; Berger, like Asensio, WAS a brilliant and decorated player BEFORE Villa signed him. Just like Asensio.

      1. Hitchens60 avatar
        Hitchens60

All fair comment – my analogy was in reference to age – Berger was 32 when he joined Villa whereas Asensio is 29. Three years difference is a lot at that point in a players career.

It seems Emery feels Asensio has more to offer than Ramsey – at least in the short term but don’t overlook the fact that we’ve offered Ramsey a new contract.

Only time will tell – or maybe Ramsey will decide to accept the new contract offer and stay? It’s a good strategic move by Villa – if you want to stay here’s the deal and we’re happy to keep you; if you want to go it’s your choice.

        1. 3 years difference is also a good point. Asensio’s attributes are not related to pace, so he could – could be outstanding for at least 5 years. The best comparison is Sheringham who played PL and scored goals football until he was 40. Asensio is in that bracket in terms of playing style and footballing intelligence.
But. I blame him for Villa not progressing in the CL and FA Cup, and for missing out on CL qualification. It sounds harsh and unfair. But a player of his calibre is brought in to make THE difference when the margins are at their finest. He didn’t. Not even close.
So I remain far from convinced.

Ironically, Ramsey, a local boy who would’ve run himself into the ground, missed out on the semi final at Wembley and it was made public that he wasn’t happy; I think that was the beginning of the end. For what? For a superstar loanee to go through the motions against Palace and not show that he’s (supposedly) on another level to all the other players on the pitch.

It’s all academic now anyway. But I don’t trust Asensio is a Villa shirt. I expected Cantona levels of influence. But we got something closer to Asprillia. Not good enough.

  10. Having said all that, I totally appreciate that if Ramsey won’t sign the deal that’s been offered with only 2 years left on his current deal, Villa have no option but to sell. I’m more disappointed with Ramsey for not committing to his club. Very disappointed.

So not a single comment on the actual post?
    Hmm, noted.
Pure conjecture and rumours is obviously where it’s at.

I’ll stick to before and after the actual games, I think.

    1. Sorry, Badger. On Maatsen, I think Digne is very much first choice. But we can do a lot worse for a back up left back. I’m sure Unai will help him improve the defensive aspect of his game.

    2. Hitchens60 avatar
      Hitchens60

Apologies Badger from me as well – it seemed you had an enjoyable time despite your earlier misgivings. I also enjoyed the game unlike the previous one against Marseille which was notable only for their ability to kick players. In any other competitive match I suggest at least two of their players would have been shown a red!

Back to Villareal; I thought Guessand looked a handful when he came on – gave their right back a bit of a roasting. Also his tackling back looked very composed so all round it’s positive first impressions.

Congratulations to the twins on reaching beer drinking age (well, the legal definition anyway 🙂 )

    3. Bum Bum avatar

      Hmmm…Touchy!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Your trip looks awesome Badger. I wish my kids were interested but they’re not. I might come with you next time as a long lost uncle!!!!
Looks like Jacob is indeed off. Shame but not like losing Emi or McGinn. That would rankle. I’d take Ascencio in a heartbeat. A proper intelligent modern day player.
On the left back position we’re blessed having the both of them. Digne when there is more defensive work to be done. Maatsen going forward…
      Can’t wait for KO Saturday!!!

  12. Anything less than 50 million for Ramsey and that’s pants pulled down territory for Villa. It should be close to 60 in my view, keeping in mind talent and age…40 would be laughable.

    1. I think it will be around £30m BFR with possible add ons. The financial rules forced us to sell Luiz for a fraction of what he was worth to us.
Asensio is a good player no doubt and the first half of his loan last season was excellent but his form and contribution rapidly faded. The other concern was whether he had a clause in his contract which meant he couldn’t be left out and the fact his role meant Rogers was shifted out wide and became less effective.
There’s a lot to be said for young and hungry! However if Ramsey wants to go maybe because he feels Emery won’t play him regularly, then that’s something we need to respect, especially with this season being the opportunity to get noticed for an England call up before the World Cup.

      1. I do get Ramsey’s stance; it’s just so disappointing, especially if the price is not right. Surely, it needs to be pushed as close to 40 as possible? We’re robbing ourselves at 30.

  13. Also, if he signs in time for Saturday, there has to be a stipulation that he can’t play for them in the opening game; it would be suicide if we allowed that…

  14. Another bugbear is we’re selling to a direct rival, making them stronger; is that clever? What happened with Chelsea and Gallagher? Didn’t they insist he moved abroad when there was interstellar from PL rivals?

  15. Hitchens60 avatar
    Hitchens60

Mooted at £40m which is probably about right.

Interesting that the latest piece in the BBC suggests that ultimately the move is down to Ramsey – Villa have offered him a new contract.

It may well come down to personal terms or the Champions League and his understanding of playing time.

  16. Selling for 30 Mill would be crazy. Its a simple calculation, could we buy a player of his potential for 30 Mil.

  17. 1874 was a good year avatar
    1874 was a good year

I don’t get some of the points made above. Ramsey has two years left on his contract and refuses to sign another one. Doesn’t matter who the player is, the club have to sell if they get the right price. It will help with the finances and, if the player wants to go, then there is no point hanging on to him.
Also note that, prone as he is, if he gets another injury we’ll all be saying what a masterstroke the sale was.
I note that all of this didn’t happen until Guessand was bought which leads me to think that he could be JJ’s replacement. I’ve been wondering where he would play but Guessand on the left and Malen on the right (or vice versa) makes sense to me.
It’s sad that JJ feels he has to move to get playing time or whatever but perhaps he felt the challenge at Villa was going to be too great for him?

  18. 24 and not commanding a regular first team spot?
In his shoes maybe I’d be looking for pastures new? And let’s be honest it’s a bit of a win win all round?
Great business for us, £40m clear profit and young Jacob gets the deal that probably sets him for life and, one would assume, more first team football?
    Gan canny, man.

    1. Probably right. I just hope he doesn’t suddenly turn into Gascoigne, leaving Villa with eggs on faces…

  19. Talk of £40m deal paid in instalments over 2 years!
Also Asensio for £16m on a 3 year contract. I’m okay with that as long as there’s no obligation for him to start or to agree him being our number 10 guaranteed starter. Every player must fight for their place.

    1. Bum Bum avatar

Paying in installments is pretty normal. Things certainly seem to be hotting up on the transfer front…We may see 4 or 5 ins and outs at this rate.

  20. Hitchens60 avatar
    Hitchens60

Interest in Bailey also seems to be ramping up with Roma now reported has having made an enquiry as well as interest from Besiktas and the Saudi Pro League.

Seems he’s on £120k per week so upside is also removing a big earner from tye wage bill.

Ramsey & Bailey could bring in £65m of which around £55m would be profit. Add to that bits and pieces like Kaydon – Kessler; Barranechea and loan fees and it leaves room for further investment in the transfer market.

Guessand, Bizet and Ozcan account for about £8m (amortised) so still room for further investment and / or loan deals. If the Asensio deal at £c.£16m over three years is true then that just adds another £5m to the equation. Woukd have thought his wages would be more of an issue though!

Just need to move Dendonker on – maybe a mutual termination of his contract as he just has one year left.

All speculation but hey, ho what else is the transfer window about 🙂

  21. OLL again avatar
    OLL again

I think JJ is a fraction short of top class, and probably hasn’t much improvement left in him. The arrival of Guessand, who will compete for the left-sided attacking role with JJ, tells me Unai is prepared to sell, but not until Sunday.

Asensio return? He likes to get a close bond with a striker so they look to set each other up for a score. I don’t think it worked with Watkins before so it won’t work now. But he could feature in the games Ollie misses. He is a cool and clinical finisher – unless there is a white spot under the ball. Loan not buy, though.

    1. Hitchens60 avatar
      Hitchens60

A loan would be preferable but I suspect PSG want a fee before his contract expires and he can walk away.

Villa should negotiate hard – 29 and only a year left and big wages – we shouldn’t be paying in excess of £10m.

Any thoughts about the rumours that Trossard might be joining us from the Arse?
If we also land Saelemaekers (fingers crossed) then we’d have almost half the Belgian team on board!

    1. Bum Bum avatar

I HATE playing against him. Having him in our side would be great! Nice connection, but how many strikers do we need?
The media are STILL going on about our FFP situation! STILL! Bunch of losers.

In saying that, we need a sale, not loan for Leroy…

  23. Hitchens60 avatar
    Hitchens60

Reported fee agreed with Newcastle – £39m plus £4m in add ons. Ramsey due in Newcastle tomorrow for a medical. Good luck to him.

Trossard – yes would be a decent addition and don’t think the fee is going to be that high.

Reported that Roma wants a loan – rather they just bought him but a loan fee plus getting all his wages off the books is better than him warming the bench. His contract runs to 2027 so there would still be a year left but, rather like Ramsey, I reckon Villa would prefer a sale – and it would be surprising were they to offer him an extension.

  24. Our squad is a little threadbare IMO. A few injuries especially in defence will have us in trouble. Who covers Konsa? Bogarde has potential but untested long term. I think we will struggle to make top 7 with the current squad. I suppose with the need to drastically reduce our SCR, it’s more likely we will rely on loans. This makes me think Asensio and the rumoured Trossard do not make sense with their wages. Why hasn’t Bailey gone yet? I will drive him myself if it gets him off the books. I’m not a fan in case you were wondering 🙂

  25. Texas Villan avatar

Badger – looks like you had a great trip!

Holte, I actually disagree. I think there’s a lot to be said for a settled squad and hitting the early season form as a consequence. Time will tell, but I think we’re pretty well stocked bar maybe another defender and attacker (Ascencio seems to be the likely candidate).
