Villa – Newcastle; Let proceeds commence!

Hooray, the new season starts today. I’ll be watching the Liverpool-Bournemouth game tonight, but more with a passing interest, while I wait for what could be a great game against Newcastle tomorrow.

Then again, it might prove to be a total damp squib, as many first games tend to look similar to pre-season friendlies, where both teams can be poor.
The thought of a Villa-Newcastle fixture though, is always one I look forward to, as it does tend to produce something, even if it was our first game 5-1 tonking against them two seasons back.

So what do we know about our squad?
First off is that Morgan Rogers will be available, as he’s been training since the early part of the week. That’s great news for me as he’s exactly the sort of player I like, the sort who runs at defenders and terrifies them.
On the downside, Ross Barkley and Andres Garcia are out. I’m not sure how much of a loss that is, to be honest, as it seems Emery isn’t keen on Garcia and Barkley, as much as he’s done okay, isn’t really a mainstay anyway.
Should we be concerned that Emi Martinez is suspended for this game after he blocked a goalscoring chance in that infamous Man U final game of last season? Given there was much talk of him leaving in this window, maybe not so much, as Bizot seems to be at least a reasonable backup goalie.
And then of course, it seems a deal for Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle has been done and dusted, but for some reason it hasn’t been announced yet. I don’t understand why. Do they think the fans will be upset by such last minute news? Maybe, but he was always one to go and it’s been spoken about for a while now, so it’s not like it’s a surprise. We need the money, simple.
Anyway, there’s no chance he will be playing for either side.

As for Newcastle, well the good news there is that Alexander Isak most likely won’t be playing after basically saying he won’t play for Newcastle again. I’ve seen stories that the chances of him staying at the club are increasing, but I wouldn’t bank on it. The club won’t want a seriously unhappy player and they will agree a deal with Liverpool for him. Is he the best striker in the world at the moment? Possibly.
The only player not available for them is Joe Willock.
New signing Malick Thiaw is available and might get a runout, but he’s only been there for two days.

And then, what to think?

Well, we have a really good record at home against them recently. Much better than I had in my head and apparently we’ve beaten them in five out of the last six times we’ve played them at Villa Park.
Which has actually changed my thinking a bit.
I was going to take the easy option and predict a 2-2 draw.

But now I’m inclined to think that we can win this. The bookies have us as slight favourites too, which surprises me.
Mind you, with the serious threat of Isak being out, our chances are definitely improved.

It’s got to be 2-1 to the Villa.

UTV!

    Very disappointing.

Emery needs to change approach. McGinn is on the right and Tilesman at No.10 does not work. There is no pace. Add to that Roger’s is either not fit or is acting Billy big bollocks and needs dropping.

Pace in the wide areas is needed – Guessand in those brief moments added a threat – start with him. If I were Malen I wound be wandering about handing in a transfer request. Rashford, Acensio, Bailey and Ramsey have all left and he still can’t start.

Very annoyed with the start to this season.

Sid, it does raise this question about Emery having favourites, does it not?

    2. Agree with every word of that, Sid.

  2. Sell Rogers for as much as we can get. Sign 2 or 3 players to boost squad depth. I’m starting to question whether I want Emery long term. The football is becoming slow, boring and predictable, plus he favours the likes of Torres, Watkins and Rogers even when they are offering nothing.
Unfortunately we have hit our ceiling and going downhill thanks to PSR, SCR and whatever other financial restrictions placed upon us.
Palace next up next Sunday and probably 1 point from 9. What looked like a good set of fixtures to start the season is suddenly looking difficult.

    1. The restrictions today were down to SCS and DFS. Anything else is excuses.

I can see why Badger is not in the mood to put up new posts!

Yes. Very blunt performance, we needed blades and had only hammers. There are few teams as poor as Villa at converting possession and pressure into working the keeper. The thinking is to score from about 6 yards, nobody prepared to get a shot on target from 20 yards. Buendia, who shone brightly in pre-season gets muscled of the ball in the EPL. Mings ‘never beaten as a starter’ record gone.
Have to agree – the last team you want to face when in our sort of form is Palace. Torres for the bench in that one.

Very frustrating OLL – it seems pointless continually passing across the front of the defence in the last 15 minutes when we’re a goal down.

Run at the defence with the ball, pepper the box, as you say hit long range shots, and put them under pressure do anything but this ‘patient’ side to side stuff that will never achieve anything. At least try and create a chance even if it’s through a mistake.

I sometimes get the feeling that Emery has made them into robots, programmed to follow a set of rules – Bogarde had two good opportunities to run at the defence from the right hand edge of the box but seemed very reluctant to do so – why?

Might do a Spurs this season – low in the league and win the Europa League – fat chance!

Not good is it. Summat not adding up here.

  6. I would have sold Rogers and kept Ramsey. We would have made more profit and kept the better player IMO.

      Good call Holte.

Rogers is Emery’s project isn’t he?

Unai says he wants two players competing for every place. Good, but only useful if you drop the under-performing incumbent and insert the challenger. Our forwards in the last two games should now make way.

    1. All 3 of them, even though McGinn is not a forward and shouldn’t be playing there.
Even Bizot should have kept his place. If the ‘what’s the point? I’m not gonna play anyway” seed is planted in players’ minds, you have a very serious problem that needs remedying immediately. In other words, if you’ve got favourites, you need to bench them quickly and play the ones who produce performances, goals, and results.
The team today should have been:
      Bigot
      Cash
      Digne
Torres (there’s no one else, unfortunately)
      Mings
      Tielemans and Kamara (double pivot)
McGinn (to link Tielemans with the front 3)
      Guessand
      Malen
      Watkins

Onana would’ve replaced Kamara like for like. If Unai plays the same 11 against Palace expecting a reaction, he’ll be disappointed and in the shit. Having said that, I think there will be a lot of movement in and out of Villa Park this week and at least one of those 3 won’t be with us anymore…

Right or Wrong? What do YOU think?
