Villa – Newcastle; Let proceeds commence!

Hooray, the new season starts today. I’ll be watching the Liverpool-Bournemouth game tonight, but more with a passing interest, while I wait for what could be a great game against Newcastle tomorrow.

Then again, it might prove to be a total damp squib, as many first games tend to look similar to pre-season friendlies, where both teams can be poor.
The thought of a Villa-Newcastle fixture though, is always one I look forward to, as it does tend to produce something, even if it was our first game 5-1 tonking against them two seasons back.

So what do we know about our squad?
First off is that Morgan Rogers will be available, as he’s been training since the early part of the week. That’s great news for me as he’s exactly the sort of player I like, the sort who runs at defenders and terrifies them.
On the downside, Ross Barkley and Andres Garcia are out. I’m not sure how much of a loss that is, to be honest, as it seems Emery isn’t keen on Garcia and Barkley, as much as he’s done okay, isn’t really a mainstay anyway.
Should we be concerned that Emi Martinez is suspended for this game after he blocked a goalscoring chance in that infamous Man U final game of last season? Given there was much talk of him leaving in this window, maybe not so much, as Bizot seems to be at least a reasonable backup goalie.
And then of course, it seems a deal for Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle has been done and dusted, but for some reason it hasn’t been announced yet. I don’t understand why. Do they think the fans will be upset by such last minute news? Maybe, but he was always one to go and it’s been spoken about for a while now, so it’s not like it’s a surprise. We need the money, simple.
Anyway, there’s no chance he will be playing for either side.

As for Newcastle, well the good news there is that Alexander Isak most likely won’t be playing after basically saying he won’t play for Newcastle again. I’ve seen stories that the chances of him staying at the club are increasing, but I wouldn’t bank on it. The club won’t want a seriously unhappy player and they will agree a deal with Liverpool for him. Is he the best striker in the world at the moment? Possibly.
The only player not available for them is Joe Willock.
New signing Malick Thiaw is available and might get a runout, but he’s only been there for two days.

And then, what to think?

Well, we have a really good record at home against them recently. Much better than I had in my head and apparently we’ve beaten them in five out of the last six times we’ve played them at Villa Park.
Which has actually changed my thinking a bit.
I was going to take the easy option and predict a 2-2 draw.

But now I’m inclined to think that we can win this. The bookies have us as slight favourites too, which surprises me.
Mind you, with the serious threat of Isak being out, our chances are definitely improved.

It’s got to be 2-1 to the Villa.

UTV!

I fear the worst, why didn’t he invest in a central defender. pep being given a lesson and so will Unia.sod the rules buy .

  2. Too many at VP have become complacent. There’s no energy from any of them. A rookie manager and a team that were 3-0 down against Forest early on last week. Expect disappointment.

    Now Cash limps off

Just a question – why was Cash told to get off the pitch for treatment but Schade gets treatment on the pitch to break up Villa’s play?

Torres again – no pace loses out on a ball – very lucky disallowed but once again Torres showed up. Weak by Martinez as well.

  6. Lucky Martinez. It should be 2-0 IMO.

    1. Tedious! Boring!

  7. Lethargic. Sloppy. Slow. Weak. Unimaginative.

    So, so poor.

Emery has been worked out – high effective press followed by a quick retreat into a low block knowing Villa will be slow with the ball then put pressure from the low block with a good chance of reclaiming the ball and counter attacking against a high line. Or am I talking b***ocks?

We need some wide pace on the pitch – let’s see Malen and Guessand on for McGinn and Rogers.

    So far, so bad!

Pau and Buendia need replacing, imo on today’s showing up to now.

  11. We brought Malen and Guessand to score goals Watkins, McGinn and Rogers are not doing it so what is the problem with such an obvious solution.

We armchair managers can see it, so how long before our highly rated and paid management learn that if you replace either Konsa or Mings with Torres he will cost you a goal? Half way through last season and at the Wembley rout Torres shows he has neither the pace nor the strength for a CB.
Complacency up front? Yes. In pre-season young players came in and and played as though it was their big and only chance to impress. Neither Watkins nor Rogers are making noticeable effort in this first half.

No Holte, Martinez was deliberately barged when he had jumped – it is an automatic foul on the keeper.

    1. I disagree OLL, it was a coming together that we would be fuming about if it was at the other end. We got lucky!

  13. Crap so far. No cohesion whatsoever. The whole defence needs an overhaul; they’re all getting on and look stale. Can Villa afford a complete new back 4 next summer? Trouble ahead.
As for the attack: non existent. Ollie, Morgan and Onana need to come out. Drop McGinn back and give Malen and Guessand a run to freshen things up. It all looks ‘samey’ to quote Bagder.
Opening two games without a goal will be disastrous. We’re not there yet but I’m reminded of Little’s final season when we lost the opening 4 and didn’t score in the first two. Gregory salvaged the season when Little walked in Feb after 2.5 seasons (same as Unai). I hope history is not beginning to rhyme.
Changes needed up top in the second half…

And yes, even Rogers has been bad today. Then again, not one of them have put out anything like a decent performance. I honestly find it quite concerning.
We’ve previously had at least pace or sharp, snappy passing in our favour, but now we have neither.

  15. Just heard Martin O’Neill saying Torres beaten by 3 yards in a 3 yard chase! No way would he have played in front of Mellberg or Laursen.
I agree with you Hitch that Emery has been found out. Especially when we go 1-0 down. A low block and break with pace against a slow defence. And its not even clever tactics!!

  16. We fell behind in lots of games last season and recovered well, so for me its just a matter of time. Players that have brilliant control are just giving the ball away. Back to basics please. Why oh why is Cash going from RB to take left side corners. They are all similar and Morgan or Digne could take them just as well and not disrupt our set up.

    1. Love your optimism Gerry

Holte my post about that very same topic,Emery and Pep both have been found out .

    1. I was delighted to see City concede from playing out from the back. You reap what you sow, Pep. It’s old news now. New ideas needed…
In other words, I agree with you, Bill.

Again, poor decision making by Rogers – pass the ball. Fame has gone to his head imho

A word for the ref who I think has done really well so far.

    1. He’s our MOTM so far Hitch

  20. Hmm, it’s was about now that we used to bring Duran off the bench to score a goal or two.
How quickly can you fly from Turkey to Uk?

  21. A bang average decimated team with a rookie manager doing a job on Emery and Villa. Have we assumed we just needed to turn up?

You all know what I think of our so called must keep players , Rodger, Watkins , I don’t care how many awards they get they are holding us back . Play players that want to be someone in the game because they think they are unique to the club .

    1. Also correct, Bill. Should we have taken the 80 odd million for Watkins when Arsenal came knocking? Now there appears to be no interest. This is why you sell once they get to 28, latest 29. Not pushing 30.

This is going to be three games without a goal and two red cards!

Rogers has done nothing and on the last two showings and should have been hooked.

Toothless and I can only see another bad week against Palace.

    Top 5 – really?

It’s just the biggest load of sh*te – I’ve come to the conclusion Emery has no plan B – the games moved on and he hasn’t. This walking football is old hat.

Speed and quick movement of the ball is needed.

We are toothless up front and slow at the back.

If we can get £150m for Rogers and Watkins, I say sell and get some real quality in to strengthen the squad up front and at CB.

Terrible and I can only see defeat agains Palace at VP next week; their pace will destroy us even without Eze.

    One pissed off fan.

  25. Why sign Malen and Guesand? Other teams with players whose futures are up in the air haven’t played those players in the opening games. Should Watkins and Rogers be on the pitch? There is so much uncertainty on who will still be there come September and it shows. There appears to be a lack of commitment; it looks like they don’t care either way. Someone needs to get a grip as things are unravelling. Is there a hangover from the shafting at Old Trafford? And has all the PSR talk and Ramsey leaving upset the squad psychologically? All questions that need answering, in my opinion…

      Good points BFR.

Rogers looked lethargic – I suspect he’s started believe his own hype and has stopped working hard. We’ve seen it before with players like Deli Ali and, to a degree, Foden.

I think we should get rid while the selling price is high.
