Villa – Newcastle; Let proceeds commence!

Hooray, the new season starts today. I’ll be watching the Liverpool-Bournemouth game tonight, but more with a passing interest, while I wait for what could be a great game against Newcastle tomorrow.

Then again, it might prove to be a total damp squib, as many first games tend to look similar to pre-season friendlies, where both teams can be poor.
The thought of a Villa-Newcastle fixture though, is always one I look forward to, as it does tend to produce something, even if it was our first game 5-1 tonking against them two seasons back.

So what do we know about our squad?
First off is that Morgan Rogers will be available, as he’s been training since the early part of the week. That’s great news for me as he’s exactly the sort of player I like, the sort who runs at defenders and terrifies them.
On the downside, Ross Barkley and Andres Garcia are out. I’m not sure how much of a loss that is, to be honest, as it seems Emery isn’t keen on Garcia and Barkley, as much as he’s done okay, isn’t really a mainstay anyway.
Should we be concerned that Emi Martinez is suspended for this game after he blocked a goalscoring chance in that infamous Man U final game of last season? Given there was much talk of him leaving in this window, maybe not so much, as Bizot seems to be at least a reasonable backup goalie.
And then of course, it seems a deal for Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle has been done and dusted, but for some reason it hasn’t been announced yet. I don’t understand why. Do they think the fans will be upset by such last minute news? Maybe, but he was always one to go and it’s been spoken about for a while now, so it’s not like it’s a surprise. We need the money, simple.
Anyway, there’s no chance he will be playing for either side.

As for Newcastle, well the good news there is that Alexander Isak most likely won’t be playing after basically saying he won’t play for Newcastle again. I’ve seen stories that the chances of him staying at the club are increasing, but I wouldn’t bank on it. The club won’t want a seriously unhappy player and they will agree a deal with Liverpool for him. Is he the best striker in the world at the moment? Possibly.
The only player not available for them is Joe Willock.
New signing Malick Thiaw is available and might get a runout, but he’s only been there for two days.

And then, what to think?

Well, we have a really good record at home against them recently. Much better than I had in my head and apparently we’ve beaten them in five out of the last six times we’ve played them at Villa Park.
Which has actually changed my thinking a bit.
I was going to take the easy option and predict a 2-2 draw.

But now I’m inclined to think that we can win this. The bookies have us as slight favourites too, which surprises me.
Mind you, with the serious threat of Isak being out, our chances are definitely improved.

It’s got to be 2-1 to the Villa.

UTV!

    I’ve long loved this fixture.

I’m going for a draw Badger – wimp that I am.

The fixture rarely throws up a draw so one is probably due but there should be goals; there normally is in this fixture.

2-2 for me and a quiet but solid start.

        🙂

  3. I was going to post something along the lines of Newcastle -physicality – them bullying us but looking at the head to head we only get spanked at their gaff.
At home we fair pretty well, so fingers crossed.

Nico Jackson has, allegedly, said that he wants to team up with Emery again.

I think if we could get Jackson a loan with option to buy it would be a good move – assuming we could ‘afford’ it without having to sell Watkins.

Wow, Bournemouth player blatantly handballs and VAR says no.
    Utter joke decision.

    1. It’s only the Dippers so who gives a F**£??

      No surprise Badger.

All fans know VAR and every other aspect of EPL regulatory decisions are designed to ‘protect’ the ‘Sky 6’ which despite the results over the last two seasons has never changed.

Maybe we should rename then the ‘Sly 6’

Ah – got that wrong as lack of handball decision went against Pool – mea culpa.

Having said that my comment in general still holds water – he said still digging 🙂

        1. Van Dyck should had a pen against him, no doubt the way it’d have given? Or am I just a cynic?

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want Pool to win, but let’s just have it right.
Otherwise we get that crap against Man U.

  7. Dippers 1-0, time to watch The Great British Sewing Bee.

    1. Can’t believe Peter was eliminated last week despite having won garment of the week in the opening episode.

      1. 🤣🤣🤣

On a separate track – does the lack of an announcement re: Ramsey mean he’s still undecided or is part of the agreement that it won’t be concluded until after tomorrow’s game?

    1. He didn’t sign in time apparently Hitch (12:00 was the deadline) and I have no idea how that could happened given his medical was yesterday?
Unless it was part of deal??

        Badger123

That makes sense, although you would have thought a gentlemen’s agreement would have been enough?

But still no official announcement – well not one that I’ve seen.

    From Sky this morning

    https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/13412333/aston-villa-psr-club-confident-of-meeting-uefa-and-premier-league-financial-rules-without-major-player-sales

Isn’t this the sort of statement we’ve been asking for so that fans have a clear understanding of what’s happening at the club. Whether it’s sufficient to allow further signings is another matter.

Don’t suppose it will stop the media PSR BS though!

Bailey left out – reported on his way to Roma for a largish loan fee and an option to buy at €25m. As long as loan includes Roma paying all his wages sounds like a decent deal (large loan fee like a deposit encouraging Roma to take up option)

Bizot looks like a real goal keeper – so far

  14. Badger123 avatar
    Badger123

I was just going to say he inspires confidence.
Watkins, however hasn’t done a single thing right yet.
We’re losing the midfield and offering no threat again.
Not looking good at the minute.

Are all our players are colour blind!

Not a single shot on goal.

The only positive is Bizot – a really decent GK to back up Emi.

  16. Hitchens60 avatar
    Hitchens60

    Well that was fun!

  17. Would have taken 0-0 before the game so OK. We can clearly see the issues with cheap loss of possession and thats fixable. Bizot could be another great steal. Now to create chances and walk away with 2-0. We are so close to being good.

  18. One word…..Sloppy!
Bizot so far looks assured and Mings looks comfortable. Thank goodness Torres isn’t playing. Tielemans is better as a number 8 and it might be worth taking Kamara off and try Buendia to increase creativity.

    Pawson again – our nemesis

And that’s bollocksed my fantasy football as well.

    1. He’s a c***.

  20. Lethargy, Lethargy…they’ve all got it: lethargy. 🤦‍♂️

  21. I love McGinn but his game has always been about energy. He can’t sustain it anymore. Bring Dougie back. He’ll be a bargain, still a fantastic age and no settling needed…

  22. Put Emi, Don, and Evann on…need some intensity…

  23. I’d start Don ahead of the skipper tbh…

What a load of rubbish villa are I’m thinking Premier league and uefa have won in getting rid of villa threat on the favourites
    It’s all corrupted
I’m fed up with football now no enthusiasm for it anymore life’s to short to watch rubbish like this.
I don’t like to say it but has emery hit the ceiling

    1. Probably. But the fat lady…
Emery hasn’t reached his ceiling; Villa have.

  25. Another ‘purchased’ ref by the looks of it. 🤬
