Villa fined £200k for pitch invasion. Scandalous. Or is it?

We all know the story.
Villa fans thought the whistle had gone and leapt onto the pitch to celebrate.
There was very little, if any animosity aimed at the Albion fans and it was all celebratory, from what I’ve seen.
But it was a high profile game shown on the Beeb and gave totally the wrong message to anyone watching, in that it’s ok to invade if you’ve won an important game.

Which would be fine, if it was just an important game.
As we all know, that particular game was, well, a game-changer for the club, one that, for me, massively contributed to the difference of us staying up or going down.

But donning a neutral cap, it’s not a good enough excuse.
While I totally believe the fans intentions were perfectly good and it was just pure celebration, I think, having had time to think about it, that it was an inflammatory action that actually provoked the Albion fans into their behaviour, that was actually way worse than ours.
My opinion says the Albion fans don’t really kick off in the way some of our other local fans do, is the point.

I understand that this might not be a popular opinion, but we have had some previous history this season.
We’d already been fined £100K for the Leicester game, a fine that had been increased after a previous £50k fine in an earlier game, that eludes me (Stoke?).

Don’t get me wrong.
I don’t blame the fans for this at all (apart from getting the timing wrong), but the fact that the game was shown live with the likes of Lawrenson saying it was a disgrace and practically the end of footy as we know it didn’t help.

Where were the stewards and police, who while I wouldn’t expect them to stop a full blown invasion, should surely have done better?
Penny pinching? Probably, given the fact that I actually got thrown out of VP for holding an unlit cigarette a while back (yes, it still wrankles, for those who remember the story. Pay peanuts, get monkeys).

Is that £200k actually a record?
I thought West Ham got the same for the fracas against Millwall, but don’t know for sure.

Summing up, yes, it’s a harsh fine, but are we really surprised, given that it’s the FA who handed it out?
They’ll happily sell their soul down the river and will do anything to pay off the stupid money that the unwanted Wembley cost.
I have the same opinion of those in charge of the FA, as they seemingly have for football supporters who are celebrating a win.

“Playing a high line with too/two slow centre backs” – Paul Scholes.

How he spelt the too/two I don’t know but they were both right. Sherwood can take the blame for this one also, because you can never turn an overlapping right back into an emergency left back, so Hutton spent his defensive time overlapping in Saints half. With the squad available today the choice Tim needed at left back was Gabby.

Saints are an extreme team – they have 3 good and fast counter-attacking forwards and fielded the lot, so the way to play them was sit back with 8 behind the ball at all times and hope to catch them on the break, as we did in the 3-2 win at St Mary’s. As it was we played right up to the half way line with only three at the back and our stay-at-home keeper a long way behind them. Saints could have given the pre match tactical talk to our team and not set themselves up better.

If Tim told them they were playing for their Wembley places he has probably written ‘none of the above’ on the team sheet after that. Come on you Spurs.

Agreed, but if he’d have stuck Gabby at left back he’d have been slaughtered… (TS not Gabby…).

  3. I’ll said that before they did, stuck out a mile.

Been no chance at staying up without Sherwood. Think people need to realize, he’s learning, but he’s still better than most young managers are. He’ll eventually learn there’s only 1 manager that doesn’t have to change his tactics to beat teams, and that was Pep at Barca around 08-09. Soon I’m sure Sherwood will learn he’s gotta change it up, doesn’t help with the amount of defensive injuries we always have though.

        Ahem!!!!

  13. Well done Tim!

He came in under dreadful circumstances, a team that didn’t know how to score, in fact they didn’t even know how to pass a ball forward, a team that was so down in the dumps that they had ‘relegation’ written through them like a stick of rock.

Tim has single-handedly pulled them out of the mire and with one game still to play we’re now safe. If he wins the last game we’ll end with 41 points, 19 more than when he came in with only 13 games to play.

He’s done absolutely brilliantly and what might he achieve next season when the pressure’s off a bit and he can buy some new players that will play the way he wants? I look forward to seeing it 🙂

UTV and Tim for World President!!!!

  14. The football gods looked upon AVFC kindly this season thank f##k it’s over and let this be an end to wallowing at the wrong end of the table.
Now let’s turn them Gooners over UTV.

Watched the game yesterday from sunny Bulgaria, which was an utter shambles, very embarrassing, the players should be ashamed of themselves. The managers comments after the game summed it up when he said the whole playing and coaching staff plus management let the club down. It would be a nice gesture if all staff and players donated their weeks wages each to ACORNS because they certainly did not earn it. I hope this gets some air time and the pressure is put on them as it is a small snip-it from their vast wealth.
At least we stay in the PL….thanks to the rest of the results.
