Game highlights here
I listened to the game on AVTV and it sounds like we played quite well overall.
Of course the point has been made on here by certain fans, that Rotherham are a poor team, but you can only beat what you have in front of you.
We apparently did that very comfortably today and as far as I’m concerned you can’t do much more than that.
By the same token, we’ll meet better sides who will give us a much tougher test and that’s where we’ll see more of what we’re really about, but for today we should just be happy that we got the result.
Tony Morley is a bloke I respect and his view was that Gestede, McCormack, Ayew and Grealish all played well along with Elphick and Chester at the back.
Gestede particularly seems to have had a great game, having scored two goals from headers and being close with another effort. It just shows that if you give him the service, he’ll get you goals and the crossing was excellent today.
Ayew did well and had the right hump when he was subbed and possibly rightly so, as Morley said he’d been our most creative player, particularly in the second half. But then it’s a long season in the Championship, and we’ll need to rest players as much as possible.
It was also nice to see Grealish’s name on the scoresheet too, after he rounded the keeper and scored from a very wide angle.
Overall, that’s three points towards the tally we’ll need to avoid the imminent relegation that we’re facing, if you listen to some and I’m one happy bunny, who’s out for a few beers later to celebrate.
Happy days!

Get in there.
How good does it feel to know we actually won a game, even if it was against Rotherham?
I don’t care who we beat. Winning’s a habit and a mentality and all the points count towards promotion. Do this week in week out, show a bit of fight and this journey in the championship could be rather enjoyable!!
Spot on John.
We should just savour the moment, imo.
Another game Tuesday. God, they come thick and fast don’t they?
And that’s where the squad comes into it.
Get some more crap out and a few in and we ought to be in the running.
How a win changes your outlook, eh?
One thing’s for sure. It’s going to be a roller coaster.
We still need more signings a right bk and a couple of midfielders and a wide man. Get that and we will finish top 6 but still wouldn’t back is to go up.
Absolutely – and no Richards, Guzan, Clarke, Hutton, N’Zogbia or Sanchez near the line up. I think we’re moving somewhere 🙂
N’Zog has left, thankfully.
BMail reporting that Villa are trying to arrange a season-long loan out for Agbonlahor, with RDM apparently having told him that he won’t play for Villa this season.
Can only imagine him having to drop another division or two, with Villa still paying his wages, if he’s going to go anywhere – his reported comments suggest that he’s not planning on moving…
33,000 attendance. Very decent, imo.
That is a good crowd. Is trinity still not open. What happens when we play blues will they open it for that
Great feeling – a home win of any sort has been so rare for the last 5 years.
But Huddersfield will be a big test on Tuesday…
I also wonder how long Benitez will last at Newcastle!
Agreed Ardent, Huddersfield is another kettle of fish, but I’ll worry about that on Tuesday.
In the meantime, it seems the Diawara link might be back on;
http://www.football-italia.net/89671/diawara-reconsiders-aston-villa
Huddersfield will beat us Tue they are a decent team. If we beat them we can beat anyone
Not sure I like the sound of that: a teenager who seems to think too highly of his own ability, only joining because he’s burned too many bridges and left himself nowhere else to go…?
Personally I’d rather see some more seasoned pro’s coming in to reinforce our fragile defence.
More has to do with him wanting to play for Roma but they don’t need him now they’re keeping their player.
Do we really want a player who will only use us as a stepping stone at best. Also is he the right type of player fur the championship we need grafters and team spirit more that talent and he sounds like he will sulk all the time.
Can’t just have grafters, you need quality and talent as well, or next season if we go up will be just as bad as last. And yes, he can get stuck in, he did play for Bologna, a team often fighting to stay up.
True but we’ve had quality like Zog and Ireland and look what happened there
Ireland never wanted to join us though. He was forced out of the only club he wanted to play for. He needed to be made to feel special and Villa couldn’t do that for him, Hughes could for him at Stoke though seeing he did it at City for him. That’s the difference between poor managers and top managers, it’s not just talent or hard work, it’s the player’s personality traits as well.
N’Zogbia was full of himself after his semi-okay performances for Wigan got him a big name. Much like Martinez, mediocre at best but if you can look decent at a small club you will get a big move, and most likely fail.
They’ll definitely open it for that, I’d say oohah.
And maybe a few other teams too (Newcastle etc)
Hope so thanks
You can see why the players can be fickle and expect defeat, when we as fans think Huddersfield will beat us. No they won’t. They are Huddersfield and had their glory in the 1920’s. They will not win three in a row.
Villa have turned a corner. The only way we could lose is if Ayew gets sent off. If he plays and stays on the field, we will win.
Banish these negative thoughts.
And our glory days were early 80s what’s ur point
My point Oooooaaahhhhh is Villa have turned a corner. I believe we have a strong team in the championship, which with 3 solid additions will secure us a top two position and an instant return to the premiership.
We are not as bad as we think, we are infuriating through losing the ability to win matches. Today this changed. If Sheffield Wednesday are a yard stick for this division, we have nothing to fear. A handful of consecutive wins and the division will fear us. I will out my neck on the bloc and say we are on the start of this journey.
Villa have taken a step in the right direction. We still need to see the signings on the current shopping list actually sign. If they do we might have the makings of a midfield who can scrap for it.
Lets see where we are when the window closes.
It’s a start but let’s see what happens on Tue where we play a more credible team.
What a strange feeling, Villa winning at home and playing good football! Newcastle made the mistake of buying premier league players, and they will suffer for it. RDM has made some astute signings, with championship experience. If we pull in the other 2-3 players we are being linked with, I think we will be a formidable force this season. This is where Gestade is in his element, and we need to play to his strengths.
Wouldn’t write Newcastle of yet they will be there at the end
A manager that’s never managed at this level.
An owner that’s an exploitative p##k.
A big club???
That’s won what in the last three quarters of century?
I hope they get what they deserve…
F##kall!
I must admit I’m getting a bit sick of our owner. He is a bit of a clown trying to pretend he’s one of the lads when he’s not. I like the fact he’s in Twitter but shouldn’t be posting all the time.
Agree with CAV:I think that the combination of Gestede and McCormack could well terrify most of this division in the weeks and months to come – they might need a little time to gel together, and every win helps boost confidence.
Yes, enjoy the moment I haven’t felt like this for a long time. Great win hopefully we can kick on from here .
Ha ha good to see Pep struggling media will be gutted
Remember in this league teams win for 3 months them lose for the rest of the time……we will be no different probably……
Pep / Man city….saw this City are still crap- passing for the sake of it…and not always good passes…lucky to win…own goal when for a rarity someone attempted to take on a defender……lucky win.
Agree the media will still have a fest over him and say how much better they are than last year which is a load of crap as on this evidence they were better last yr. I’m sure he will just pop out and spend another 100m though that’s all him and mourinho are good for
See McCormck is justifying his price tag, whats’s that, 3 games 0 goals.
He must be trying to beat Gabbys goals to games ratio.
Di Matteo out.
Doesn’t matter whether he scores them or just sets them up for others to score…
He had an assist though today just as good imo. As long as he is scoring or assisting I don’t care
God, you must be miserable to live with. Total tool!
First win for 6 months and some saying we’ve turned the corner. It was Rotherham ha ha ha. While some are saying we can only beat what is in front of us it doesn’t disguise the fact that it was Rotherham, probably the shittest team in the division.
It is good to win and yes, we had to start somewhere but getting erections or renewing your wedding vows based on us beating Rotherham is a bit like the day Pat was born………Premature!!
@Stubbs
Uncalled for again mate! We win for the first time in 6 months and all you can think of is how to insult others who post on this blog.
Badger can you give this nose a red card please?
Stubbs, consider this a final warning.
You’re entitled to your view wrt the team and the manager etc and we actually appreciate contrary comments, because that’s what it’s about; debate.
But you are making personal insults and we can’t allow that mate.
Any more and you’ll force us to blacklist you.
Dear Stubbs
I do find your negativity beyond the pale. At the end of the season we will see whose view is right.
As a child I was told if it is not kind, or honest or negative, then don’t say it. Wise words.
Look at Dr Xia, he is committed and with his funds he will make it happen. Just wait until all the current and to be bought players have s time to gel, we will be even better. Now that is a kind, honest and positive appraisal for this season. Top two!
That’s pretty cool mate, like it 😄
Stubbs has an opinion that differs to others and ppl call for a ban. Lol.
Mummy mummy he just took my teddy!!!
Grow up
Btw, he’s right, it was bleeding Rotherham, so put your Willy’s away gents and wait until we beat a side better side…..then play all you like.
Totally incorrect, #Helenius.
It’s been ongoing, personally aimed at Pat for a while.
And it’s just been brought to my attention that Hitchens has said he doesn’t want to post here anymore because of similar abuse.
So sod it, sorry Stubbs, but you’re gone mate.
He appears to be a bit of a prick actually
Glad someone commented on that because (as I may have mention one or twice) that, or should or say ‘Pep’s’ brand of footy absolutely bores me to the point of suicide. It’s such a pity they got a lucky win, I hope and pray for the sake of football they don’t win, well anything to be honest.
As for Villa today thank f##k we have a win under our belts, hopefully it’ll be onwards and upwards!
To Villawayndiv3.
Pep and Borinhio are the two most overrated managers in football. The fawning over them by the media is pathetic. And before anyone says anything I felt the same way when they fawned over mon when he was at Villa. Pep had brilliant players at Barca and Bayern was a one horse race bit like managing Celtic. Mourinho is a cheque book manager him and pep could never take s team like Leicester and make them prem champions on a £23m spend. Says it all
You won’t get any argument from me on both counts oohah, totally agree.
👍👍
3 good goals. Some nice football. Lots of work still to do. New additions still needed. Definitely need a RB and DM at least.
I have to say, it’s quite refreshing to see us actually playing teams we have a chance of beating, rather than getting hammered every week. Thought we were unlucky against Wednesday and were the better side over 90. Absolutely outplayed Rotherham.
I reckon a couple of seasons in the Championship wouldn’t be such a bad thing. Build a bit of team spirit and fight.
God no, Bencey.
One season, I can agree with, but the longer we’re out the wider the gulf gets, imo.
While I know what you mean, we really could do with getting straight back up.
Early days and one swallow didn’t make a summer and all that, just maybe we’ve turned the corner but more than one season?
Please dear God NO!
No! No! No!
Forest, Leeds, Blackburn, even Wolves and Small Heath – just a few ‘big’ old clubs stuck in this division after coming down for what most of their fans thought might be one or two seasons at most.
Not bad enough? Bolton, Coventry and Portsmouth were in the Premier League not that long ago – now look at them.
Absolute priority has to be to get back [UP] out of here ASAP – if not at first attempt then definitely at second, or we can forget about getting back into the football big-time in most of our remaining lifetimes!
Agree Ardent. I personally think if we don’t come bk this year it will be at least 10 plus years before we do
Great to see a positive step after the shambles at Luton… Is there anyone that agrees with me – tshibola looks class
Dan, I saw a similar comment elsewhere that said he looked solid and composed. I have to say he never got mentioned much in the commentary, but then that was all about the attack and the defensive pairing.
Hopefully, we’ve turned the corner today. Good performance and some good goals. We really need to take this into Tuesdays game and get another win. Huddersfield will be tougher opposition though.
Really happy with Elphick and Chester, and I think Baker is a solid back up. Still think we need a CM before the window closes. A RB is also needed, although Bacuna can play that position pretty well as he showed today.
If we sign another striker then great, but I dont think thats essential.
UTV!
Depends if we hold onto Ayew or not, imo.
If he goes (and it seems he showed his face today, after being subbed) I’d say there’s room for one more.
Mids are the priority for me though. We’ve been piss-poor in the middle for far too long and it’s those players that progress the play from front to back and vise versa.
Or not, in our case, which is what makes us look so dis-jointed quite often, imo.
It’s why I’d get rid of Westwood in a heartbeat.
I’m worried that we still havnt got any more faces in. I hope just because we won one game that Dr X will close his purse.
Yeah, Sunday after a game we should’ve signed a couple already. Relax… He’s clearly going to bring in a few more.
I’m not a fan of Ayew if he wants to go let him he’s no loss. He’s not exactly setting the world alight at VP is he
Yeah only our most talented, most technical and most creative player. Wouldn’t miss him at all beating defenders on a consistent basis and putting balls in the box from a position he shouldn’t even be playing, but has been able to with ease.
Just watching Arsenal they r like us last yr as soon as pool scored they went to pieces
phew so happy with that result. wish i could say it was never in doubt but i couldn’t. loving the comments on this site today. more positive comments, which i find reassuring, we all have our demons, we all think we are being cursed lately. its hard to always be positive, when we have been so poor for years.
facts are we always have been and always will be a top club,a great club, this season we are the cup final for the lesser glamorous clubs. will have to deal with that and we will. each win brings more confidence, its the opposite to what happened in last 5 years in premiership. players and fans started to accept, being a club happy to survive and accept a defeat before we played.
was always gonna be a shaky start, we have the ability, i have no doubts of that, we just need the confidence to flood back quickly. same is happening to newcastle and they have replaced more of their squad too. its the aura around the clubs, we need to take this league seriously but we don’t need to fear anybody.
Where are you Hitchins????your one of the happy villa family mate.you get the odd arsehole on here now & then who goes well beyond opinions.great win yesterday & I’ve still got an erection.
Thanks Giddy, still following. Badger and OohAh been in touch which is much appreciated. Off on hols for a month so posting difficult but will follow the debate.
Great win yesterday. – OK it’s Rotherham but we have to win these games if we want promotion. Still enjoying my hangover!
Bill pearson kindly let me know as I missed all the crap going last night enjoy your hols Alan wicker lol 😀 get it down yer mate.
That’s great Hitch, I ask Giddy because of what Badger intermated in his post, sent Badger an email to find out, was going to call you mate, that idiot tried it on before with me but didn’t work, glad all settled, let’s get back to getting behind our club , good result and hopefully more to come.
Ditto 😀
Hi Hitchy (or should that be Arnie?) I’ll be back – 60
Sally Morgan’s got f##kall on me
(give me a Crystal ball and cross my Palm with silver).
Hey Hicthy (aka Lazarus) did the return pan out something like this?
Dr Badger – Hi Hitchy, come in sit down, now what can I do for you?
H60 – It’s, well, my ego Doc.
Dr Badger – And what seems to be the matter with it?
H60 – Well Doc, I believe I may have Stubbed it.
Dr B – Come place it here on the couch, let me give that ego a little rub. That feeling better?
H60 – Much, thanks Dr B.
Dr B – No problem Mr H, no don’t forget to post at least three times a day and you’ll be back to normal in no time.
BWS,
Pack it in mate.
Stick to arguing the points made and not having constant digs at people, please.
Fair enough Badger but don’t you think that just maybe some people are just a little too sensitive to any sort of criticism?
And come on Badger you’ve to give me my prediction was spot on.
BWS,
It doesn’t matter what I think.
I think anyone can put up with the odd dig or bit of banter, but when it looks like it’s consistently targetted, it doesn’t matter, it’s out of order and frankly bullying, imo.
That’s why Stubbs went, it’s as simple as that. Even that grieved me, as I believe it’s healthy to have dissenters. The last thing we want is to have posters all in agreement. But it has to be kept civil.
You’re a good poster with good points when you stick to what’s relevant and there’s no need for it mate.
Me, I just want an easy life and don’t want to be banning anybody.
Anyway, I’m sure people don’t want to read us talking about how we should behave, so that’s it now. Subject closed.
And if he/she/ hermaphrodite/transgender finds that offensive then they really do need to get out more 😮
BWS – criticism is fine and so is having a different view or arguement but personal abuse is not acceptable in my book. You don’t know anything about me so you have no right to call into question my gender, my beliefs or my mental state of health.
Fwiw I am honest enough to accept that I probably over reacted in a haze of alchohol but that doesn’t change the fact that the comments made by Stubbs were completely out of order.
I thought you were away and it was difficult to post?
What a lovely feeling it is to wake up the morning after with a hangover but feeling really happy that we won for once😃 I could get used to this
Now let’s get the signings in we need and push on from here on in utv
Yes a villa win beats an orgasm may it continue Utv VTID SOTC
I don’t know about that Giddy?that last time I remembered was saying how about it? The reply was you’ve had that, and I cannot remember.think age caught up with me.
Mate I can only relate to the villa win can’t remember the last time I had an orgasm so I’m happy to take the win.UTV
Never mind Giddy ,just hope you get it once or twice a week then. 🙂 😀
Lol 😀 fingers crossed mate
Looks like Jedinak will be coming tomorrow;
http://www.footballinsider247.com/reliable-journalist/
Hope so just what we need
I think he’d be great for us.
There is the concern that he’s 32, but if the aim is to just get one or two seasons out of him, fair enough.
Obviously his last payday, so he isn’t going to be cheap and will probably be on 3 years min, but that’s how it is.
32 is ok look at ibramhimoc at utd. Defoe etc. The youngsters will do his running for him while he tells them how to play the game properly
Be careful mate.
You nearly sounded positive then 🙂
😄😄
Not happy about loan signing Bamford. They only care about their own performance never fight for the cayse
Yeah they might only care about their own performance, but too prove to their parent club they’re good enough, they pretty much have to improve everyone around them with their play. I agree, I don’t want Bamford either, but that’s just because he’s really not that good. Was awful at Palace, 1 decent loan to Middlesbrough doesn’t make him talented.
Terrible player, an absolute shower. In all honesty I just don’t see what Chelsea see in him and all those goals for Middlesbrough, that player of the Championship award?
He’s not a patch on the enormous talents of Westwood, Hutton and Bacuna.
Yeah, and that season before that where he had… 8 whole goals for Derby. Man he was a monster. I don’t see why a RB, a defensive midfielder and a utility player shouldn’t be able to at least match that. Don’t forget his 0 goals in 7 games at Norwich last season after he was sent back by Palace because he was simply too good for them with his 0 goals there too.
Andy mate, I concur.
You’ve posted before what giants of game Westwood and Bucuna are so I trust your insight and judgment.
IV never seen him play tbh so can’t judge. Sounds like someone who will produce in flashes but not consistent.
YouTubed him and he looks quite handy but then again who don’t?
He was player of the Championship 14/15 playing for Borro and is highly rated by Chelsea but seems to be lacking something for the Premiership, what that something is I don’t know.
He’s already proven he’s got what it takes at this level during his time at Borro.
Bamford and Jedinak at the same club? Not again, the pair had a falling out at Palace, so I think whoever is to be second in will probably decline.
What is wrong with Bamford? He is 6′ 1″ and 11st 3lb so he can’t play as a target man with a 13st centre half up his ass. He could play off a CF, Adam Lallana makes a fair job of it.
That’s a pity, Bamford looks useful (at championship level) but if forced to choose then for obvious reasons it has to be Jedinak.
Not convinced by the Bamford idea – but Jedinak would bring just the sort of ‘steel’ that we’ve lacked at Villa for a good few years now.
If his move comes off, I wouldn’t worry about his age at all – he should be good for a couple of years yet.
Great addition imo hopefully more to follow
