Villa 2 -1 Blackburn; We’re up to fifth.

A bit of a strange game, I thought.
We started off looking like Brazil at their finest and ended up looking, well not quite ropey, but definitely under pressure.
It would seem Dean Smith really wasn’t kidding when he said Blackburn were a very decent side with good players.

It was easy to see in their play that the lads are brimming with confidence and even Tyrone Mings showed trickery with his feet that’s not normally associated with a defender. What an absolute rock he is. His calmness just seems to have oozed into the team, but he was also passing the ball around so high up the pitch that I thought he might get a nosebleed, at one stage.
For him to get the goal with a very difficult header was just reward for his good work of late. Was he the MOTM? Possibly, but you might have a different view.

So while we played exhibition type stuff in the first half, with some excellent play leading to Tammy’s goal, it’s a good job Mings did get the second as Rovers came back very strongly in the second half. So strong in fact, that it’s difficult to see why they’ve struggled so much of late.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think they’re a great side, but they work hard and have players that can punish you. Fotunately, we managed to hold out in what was quite a nervy last 20 minutes.

So, another win and that’s five on the bounce.
It’s a shame that we couldn’t keep a clean sheet and I think Steer should have saved their goal, but he’s done very little wrong in our winning streak, so I’m not complaining and it didn’t affect the result anyway.

Happy days and I’m off for a meal and a few drinks to celebrate.

So Danny Rose can’t wait to see the back of football! Whilst I agree that racism needs to be stamped out, he has to remember that the abuse was in Montenegro which is where the British game was 30 odd years ago. For £100,000 a week (guessing) playing the greatest game in the world, in front of fans who in their vast majority are paying hard earned money to cheer him on, to say this is a slap in the face for working class people and the likes of Regis, Batson and other black players who suffered it week in, week out. Personally if I was a Spurs fan I would say if that’s your attitude, then you know where the door is. Lots of people suffer abuse in their work places whether it’s their skin colour, hair colour or whatever but have to put up with it for the minimum wage, knowing that jobs are hard to find. Pampered premier league players can rightly call out the mindless idiots who chant abuse but don’t forget how privileged they are doing what so many of us can only dream about.

Have to disagree. No-one should have to face disgusting abuse when they turn up at the workplace. Rose’s point is the constant abuse wears you down.

I’d guess that if you’re not black and in his position then you won’t have an idea what it’s like.

BTW just because Regis suffered disgusting abuse I don’t see why that’s relevant now I’d have hoped that we’d have moved on since those days.

My point was that it was abuse suffered in Montenegro. They should be thrown out of any future tournaments like England would if it had happened at Wembley. Rose has a choice in that he can retire now and never have to work again, but he won’t because the moneys too good. My other point was there are plenty who suffer abuse but don’t have luxury of calling it a day at work. I go to games in this country and I don’t hear racist abuse. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen. Look at Grealish getting verbal and physical abuse. Unfortunately I don’t think it will ever 100% go away until the punishment befits the crime.

Sorry Holte but no-one should have to suffer racial abuse whatever their work situation is. By making light of abuse aimed at footballers it makes it easier to make light of racial abuse in other situations. It’s attitudes like yours, that seems to accept a level of abuse as inevitable, that gives licence to the brain dead racists to do what they do.

          Any abuse, anywhere is wrong.

I take offence Pat that you suggest I am making light of racism. I wish that everyone could live their lives without fear or persecution, whether that be at work or anywhere in society. Unfortunately there will always be nastiness in society. I wish there was a solution to solve it and maybe education is the only answer but just like at Blues there will always be a mindless idiot who shows up now and again. I’m curious to how you would try to change things.

Holte I’m sorry if I offended you, it was not intended in that way.

It’s a sore spot for me because I”m getting on but I was born in B’ham to Irish parents and I remember the abuse that my parents used to have to undergo and all the Paddy jokes on telly about how thick we all were. Cast iron signs saying ‘No, Blacks, No Dogs. No Irish’ were actually manufactured in B’ham at the time.

Everyone should start by calling abuse out for what it is and confronting people who abuse others. When a racist shouts abuse at Danny Rose from the stands and no-one does anything about it then everyone around him shares the blame. We need to encourage people to take action.

I’m not saying that you should confront a six foot drunken yob who’s shouting abuse but at least video him on your phone and send it to the club. If the club don’t act then put it on social media. Bullies usually hate publicity.

Pat, you’re right that abusive chanting needs to be stamped out. There has been a massive improvement in the English game over the last 30 years. Montenegro like a few other Eastern European nations are still back where we were in the 70’s and 80’s.
My mom is from Kingstanding and in her 80’s now. She was brought up by her Irish catholic gran. She has told me the same stories of those shocking signs they used to display. Her gran wasn’t impressed when she married my dad, a Protestant from the Black Country, especially after she had previously dumped an Irish catholic she was due to marry before meeting my dad. Whether it’s religion, skin colour or whatever else, there has been problems but I think education is the best way forward for future generations.

Holte yes I well remember the dire warnings from priests about ‘mixed marriages’ (marrying a Protestant that is). That was as bigoted and evil as anything else.

As you say education and a willingness to confront it head on is what’s needed.

That plus 3 points against Wednesday 🙂
