The difference a manager makes

What a difference a new manager makes ay. Sherwood has been in charge for 10 games and out of those 10 games, we have won 5, drawn 1 and lost 4 with a total of 16 goals being scored 8 of which belong to Christian Benteke. In this same time frame, we have gradually pulled away from the relegation zone (albeit not safe yet) and have cemented a place at the FA cup final with a well deserved victory against Liverpool.

I’m an excited fan, I can’t help it. To me, Sherwood is the start of something special at the Villa and I can’t contain this feeling. The mentality of the club has changed completely under this man, for one, we can’t stop scoring! And it was this very season that we set the record for most games without a goal, lowest goals in Europe and many other tragic records that feel like a long time ago.

The rumors are going wild and it doesn’t seem too unrealistic to see Sherwood retaining Cleverly, Sinclair and the surprise player Vlaar. All season I have been adamant that he would leave come the summer but he has made a shock u-turn by suggesting that Sherwood is giving he reason to rethink his decision.

Things have changed for me in the past few months since (Tim) Sherwood took over

Then you have the likes of the up and coming who have surged under Tim cough*Grealish* cough. We all thought he was going to be something special and it really seems that he is embracing that role, I just want to see him get a goal under his belt and join the England squad (not asking for much?!). Jack is only one of the younger players, we still have out on loan Gardner who has showed match after match how good he is and much further he can develop. Notts want him, but Sherwood will not let this happen, I thoroughly expect him to return in the summer and play a major part in the upcoming campaign.

To summarize, Sherwood has turned a team that lacked everything into a team that can compete and defeat any on it’s day but come the summer, there is a long list of things to do. We need to reassess our defense because it has become one prone to injuries and reoccurring ones at that. We also need a permanent left back for the future as I neither trust Richardson or Cissokho with that role and believe that Lowton may not be the player we wanted him to be. We also have to bulk out our strike force. That is a lot, but I look at our squad and I look at Sherwood and think that this is going to be something special. I’m 100% backing him, he is what we always wanted in a manager. Style, passion and desire.

It’s premature but we will be pushing for a top 10 finish next season.

In fairness Ooah, you do have a point in saying we should see how good Sherwood is come christmas, but you can say that about any manager.
I mean, look at Pellegrini. He’s one of the highest rated managers in the world, but he isn’t doing so well at the moment is he?

Still, it doesn’t matter for me. The fact that Sherwood has a 50% win figure, given the state we were in is amazing.
He’s come in and totally revitalised the team and the fans, which for me is about as good as any manager could possibly do.

He deserves at least some credit for that, but you don’t seem to be willing to hand any out at all and you only ever look to the downside.

    Remember this;
All managers become poor at every club eventually.

But no doubt you’ll be crowing about how you were right when Sherwood gets sacked. Which he will.

99.99% of us are happy that we’ve reached the FA cup final and think we have at least a chance of winning.
Yet you think we’ve lost before we kick a ball.
Just the same as you thought against Liverpool.
Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t expect us to beat Pool, but I didn’t have the same conviction as you. And I certainly don’t have the same conviction that we can’t beat any of the top 4/5.

    My point?
Just enjoy things for what they are and stop worrying about what might be. Else we’ll never be good enough.

Think with Oohah is they’re not taking their own advice. We have to wait till Christmas to praise him, but claiming he’s a poor man’s MON and he’s garbage, deadwood etc before Christmas is okay? Ridiculous argument from him, which is nothing new.

Badger – well said, and utterly true. It’s always big smiles all around at the initial photo-call, but eventually either the owner gives them the inevitable P45, or even where the manager’s brought lots of success over the years, the fans start moaning that they’re past it and really need to retire [SAF and Wenger].

Hence why I always watch the selection/recruitment of a new manager with some cynicism – we’ve all been around for years and seen too many manager exits to believe that it will ever end differently.

So let’s give Sherwood his due at this early stage, and hope he can carry it on for a couple of years, but eventually however great he proves, the end is more than likely to be just like most of the others.

Sir alex ferguson was nearly sacked in his first years. He didn’t have the security he had 25 years later. So cross him off your list of untouchables.
wenger enjoyed great success in his early years again he has earned the security he enjoys now, league titles, fa cups and successfully managing a side through massive financial football restructuring for over a decade will do that for ya.
          Cross him off too.

See tim is talking about wanting to sign cleverly, this is where I think tim will be weak is signing players, granted cleverly has improved since tim arrived but not enough to be worth signing, how many goals and assists has he got this season? Oh yes it’s a big fat zero and yes he does work hard and gets back to defend but that’s not enough for me he slows down play too much and never wants to risk a forward pass when it’s clearly on and still only has a pass success of mid 80% compare that to grealish who is always looking for that killer pass willing to take risks and has a 96% pass success and has the work rate it just puts cleverly to shame. I thought Westwood had a much better game than him in the semi and he does pass forward even switching play every now and again and has a lot more key passed during games so can’t understand the love for cleverly, to me he is just a more expensive Westwood and not as brave.

Agree Kerry. Cleverly is hopeless IMO and maybe plays as it might be in his contract to play him when fit. He’s always made it clear from the start he would rather play at Everton so stuff him he’s no loss. Like you say no assists, no goals, no fwd passes. No wonder Utd want shot of him.

Grealish has a 91.3% pass rate, which is fairly easier to have when you play 375 minutes, compared to Cleverley’s 86.3% in 2088 minutes. I mean you wanna use stats, he has a 0.9 key passes per game ratio, compared to Grealish’s .7. Meaning Cleverley’s passes are more forward to create.

Content to let the manager decide.

Every really good team is made up of a mix of players and every team needs its adventurers who will go forward at every occasion but they also need the type of player who will steady the ship and hold things together.

Always remember when Cantona described Didier Deschamps desparagingly as a ‘water carrier’, i.e an unadventurous mid-fielder, yet when he left Juventus they were pretty crap for a few years after.

Villa also needs a ‘water carrier’ and perhaps TS sees Cleverley as being just that.

I do realize this is hard to understand, but Grealish is a winger/AM and Cleverley is a all around CM. They’re completely different players so claiming one’s almost better because one attacks and one doesn’t all the time is a garbage reason. Cleverley’s 25 years old, he’s not old, he isn’t even at peak age for midfielders which is around 27-28 and goes to around 31-32 when they go downhill. But claiming a couple great performances by Grealish who’s an all around attacker being better than an all around CM because he attacks is stupid as hell.

Agreed Andrew, Cleverly has played well since Sherwood has taken the fear away from him… He was the Man Ure scape goat and his confidence must have been severely knocked, but if he chooses Villa I will be happy… Any neutral player would have chosen Everton over the Villa a few months ago, when Lamberk was in charge, so we can’t blame him for something that was rumoured in those sorry times,

Just funny because Cleverley’s never said a word or made it clear that he wants a move to Everton. He’s also getting far more forward under Sherwood then he ever did under Lambert. If he got the bravery to shoot, he’d be a complete midfielder for us, but that’s not him. Never will be him, but his type of player is always needed at clubs. Maybe not as a starter, but a guy who can play 25 games or so a season + cup games, that’s what he is and that’s something we need. Especially if we do win the FA Cup, with European games we need the depth.

I’d have no qualms if he wanted Everton, but it’s yet to be proven he ever has wanted them. I also have no qualms with any player wanting to leave after what Lambert did, from Vlaar to Benteke to someone like Sanchez to hell, anyone. It was a complete disaster and I’d have wanted to leave too if I wasn’t a Villa fan, playing the worst football in the league and being bored to bloody tears.

By tabloids, unless I see a competent source, you should learn the definition of a fact.

As I said, he’s not going to score goals or assist, that’s not the kind of midfielder he is, but it’s still an important position every team needs/has.

Wasn’t saying cleverly and grealish are similar players I was saying grealish has had.more of an impact on the team in a few outings than cleverly has had all season! They are not like for like but you can still compare their contribution to the team and cleverly has a few good attributes like defensively responsible and runs a lot but other than that he doesn’t bring much, is it impossible to get a midfielder with those same attributes but can also play the ball into space behind defences and just try and create or score a goal? I think we already have one with Gary Gardner if he can stay injury free as he seems to.be doing a great job defensively for forest while also scoring some.cracking goals and assisting. Cleverly as a squad player yes but a 50 or 60 grand a week squad player?.eh..no.
