Roy Keane has left the position as assistant manager of Aston Villa after admitting that he has found it too difficult to balance the roles of assistant manger for both Aston Villa and Rep. Ireland. Keane has been assistant manager for less than 5 months.
“Ultimately, my roles with Villa and Ireland and combining my commitment to these have become too much,” he said in a statement.
“It isn’t fair to either Villa or Ireland, so I’ve made this decision.
“I’d like to thank Paul for giving me a great opportunity to come to a brilliant football club, I’ve really enjoyed my experiences at Villa and I wish the management team, the players, the supporters and the Club nothing but the best going forward.” – Roy Keane
Many Villa players praised the impact of Roy Keane and his training methods, many players were also impressed and keen to learn from the experienced midfielder. It’s also believed that Keane influenced the transfer of Tom Cleverly.
“Roy came to me this morning and he informed me that, ultimately, the difficulty of combining both roles has prompted his decision, which I respect totally.
“In the brief period we have worked together he has been great in the role and I understand his reasons for leaving.” – Paul Lambert
Now Aston Villa have to find an assistant manager, there isn’t any information regarding who will take Keane’s place. But some players, such as Bacuna might welcome this departure as it’s believed that his limited game time was largely influenced by the arrival of Keane. Nonetheless, I reckon Keane did help the side mentally, especially at the beginning of the season. Our defence have become stronger and our players have appeared to be more committed at the back. His experience and presence have helped little with our attack, but overall I’m happy that Aston Villa were able to lure someone with the caliber of Roy Keane. I wish him the best

Hope lambert is next
Does Keane know the axe is about swing getting out before it happenes. Seen Lamberts lnterview last night looks a worried man.
Obviously jumped before he was pushed one down one to go
Tweedle Dee has gone fingers crossed for Tweedle Dum
the perfect replacement is Gordon Sidney Cowan surely. this villa man will get the team playing football.when you care for the club, as i am sure he does. he will succeed were others like keano, just don’t care enough to want too.
Rubbish Nath.
Cowans has been there before and failed.
Club legend but a crap coach.
i would rather have a guy that loves the club, than a mercenary who’s records with previous clubs sunderland and ipswich wasn’t to clever, hes a reputation of bullying players were today professionals won’t bow to this type of dictatorship
Lerner gave oneil too much control and too much money spent on rubbish with big wages. Ellis would have kept control and sacked him when he threw his dummy out of the pram.LERNER MUST GO FIRST BUT HE WONT AND HE IS USELESS AT EMPLOYING MANAGERS,ALL HAVE BEEN GIVEN NO HELP BECAUSE ONEIL FRIGHTENED LERNER AND NOW HE DOESNT TRUST HIS MANAGERS. You are getting us relegated and then nobody will go with lerner in charge and in the championship
Good fucking riddance as if he made a hell of a difference,LAMBERT take fucking note you have a problem dealing with just the one job.please FUCK OFF!!!!! Aswell
I don’t think he has walked because of what is about to happen..
Ireland only have two games in the next 12 months ( i think )..
Why would you walk if PL is about to get sacked.. naturally he would get the job as caretaker for a few games..
He has left IMO because he doesn’t want to be a part of the drivel that we are serving up… IF we had won 4 of our last 5 games i bet you he wouldn’t have quit..!
And imo, you’re spot on.
Lionheart that makes sense, I believe Lambert is on borrowed time, tomorrow will tell.
Lionheart you’re spot on imo.
Unless Keane was told he isn’t next in line for the job permanently, even if he was caretaker? So there’s no point sticking around if he knew he had no chance.
That or he figures Lambert’s never gonna go and he mine as well.
Just doesn’t ever seem like a quitter, or he’d have quit Ireland if he didn’t wanna be around drivel being served up. I mean O’Neill’s not exactly done a good job there.
Rumours he had a bust up with senior player prob bent imo.
i have heard it was gabby and it was flown blown argument
I can see it being Gabby, I just think Bent and Lambert had huge issues between each other. I can see Gabby being defensive and anything Keane says which is usually something idiotic probably ticked him off enough to bad mouth Keane. Gabby doesn’t seem the type to be scared of facing anyone head to head.
Gabbys too thick to be scared
Possibly, but one thing he’d always do is stick by Villa, which is why I do believe it was him getting into it with Keane and not Bent, who simply hates Lambert, like most fans do. I’d rather have a Gabby be thick and Keane walking out and then have someone scared as hell and Keane still being around moaning and whining about fans, former United players, managers, etc. He’s worse than Houllier with Pool, at least he was positive, Keane was more focused on whining about United.
Happy to take this at face value. Keane said all along if he couldn’t do both jobs properly he would drop the Villa job. Hard to say if it made a difference. Lambert is clearly under huge pressure and has just lost an ally. His future hangs on the next few games. A couple more poor results and Lerner will have to fire him. As I’ve said a few times before, I have no faith that a decent appointment will be made if that happens.
I never thought I would hear myself saying this but we need Pulis. He would make us competitive and push the club up to the top half. Maybe that would be enough to persuade Lerner to invest some more cash. There are no doubt more attractive options as manager, but I don’t see any merit in gambling with somebody unproven at this level or in English football unless he is given a large fund to completely reshape the team, and let’s face it that is never going to happen.
Lol – Same folk said he’s Lamberts replacement when he gets the sack are now saying he’s jumped before he was pushed. What an odd bunch.
That is relatively entertaining, although I had a feeling Keane was gonna take over, I have a feeling now that Keane was told he wasn’t going to be the one taking over. Never seems like a guy who’d ever quit, so I do think it’s a made up story that he quit because he couldn’t “handle” either job. He’s hardly done a thing for Ireland or Villa, and unless he’s scouting, he doesn’t have much to do for Ireland anyways.
Would have left if we were winning. I doubt it very much. Rat and Ship come to mind.
Never really cared much for Keane, I enjoyed the brand but didn’t like the product.
During his cameo appearance, as far as I can see, there has been no improvement to the club. The only thing that. Really changed is Lambert grew a beard and then shaved it shortly after Keane did…. So if that is anything to go by, lambert will surely leave as Keane has (with a huge payout though)
Lerner got to go ,it is not all lamberts fault.Whoever is manager will do no good under LERNER HE Hasnt got a clue
Can claim Lerner needs to go all people want, unlike Keane or Lambert though, he can’t just up and leave, nor would he, he has to actually sell the club because it is his. So the only possible plan now is to get a better manager. That’s honestly the best we can do at the moment until some filthy rich person decides they’re bored and wants to buy a football club.
We are more likely to end up with some crooked get rich quick merchant than some billionaire sugar daddy. If that happens we will see Lerner in a slightly different light in a few years time. I honestly feel the best that could happen is that Lerner somehow stumbles his way to the right manager who turns the fortunes of the club around, which in turn leads to a new enthusiasm from Lerner to put a reasonable level of funding in.
Lerner’s not a bad guy, he is just in over his depth and realises it.
In an already tarnished career, maybe he wanted to distance himself from yet another failing club to which he is associated with.???
So here we go again, lots of speculation..
Not sure why anyone thinks that Lambert’s only got a few weeks left – if he didn’t go last season then Lerner’s not about to push him out unless/until we’re relegated.
Keane may not have done anything obvious in the few months he’s been there, although I suspect he’s added a bit of mental toughness to a squad that was such a push-over so many times in the last few years.
Far more interesting as far as I’m concerned, is who comes in as number 2 now: much as we all admire Sid Cowans, “Lamberk” is right – Sid’s been there before and just didn’t make the grade [probably far too nice a guy].
there’s nothing more to this, than keano selling a few more copies of his toilet paper(book)
whats he actually achieved, simple answer nothing. we were crap pre keano than post keano. also hes not a quitter, really why walk away from sunderland.
big game tomorrow, might be the boost the players need, then we can say its the keano affect, like the wins he got us at the beginning of his temporary role
I think there is more to this than will ever be communicated, saying that I am of the opinion Mr Fox is behind the issue.
Tom Fox is very strude and knows how to manipulate business structures and strategies, I think this is the beginning of a turn around of management and also what the club needs to do.
Of course it is only my opinion, but Lerner has learnt, and so Fatty gone a new CEO, little steps make staircases.
Surely if “Mr. Fox” was behind this decision and is as shrewd as you claim he is, then cutting out the cancer, ie Lambert, must be the answer?
It seems that whatever happens, club put up for sale, assistants leaving left right and centre, constant shit results, he is untouchable.
The appointment of Fox is, ultimately, an acceptance by Lerner that he made the wrong choice with Faulkner, and that has been in large part the cause of repeated failed managerial appointments. Lerner must have seen that there was no imminent sale of the club, and he therefore needed to make steps to preserve his investment, and hopefully make it more attractive in the long run. If we are still at that point, and there is no sale in the offing (which certainly looks the case) then at some point Fox will push Lerner to bullet Lambert. That time is almost here IMO. If we don’t get much out of the next two or three games I really think Lambert will go. I’m no ITK, but it just makes sense.
Fox has stated they will be getting lamberk a new assistant as a priority dosnt sound like he’s going anywhere on that basis
Fox also states that they will “work with Paul to identify the right person to work along side him and to help us to continue on our journey to return the club to its rightful place in the Premier League”.
He does know we are already in the Premier League doesn’t he?
I think near the bottom is just about right at the moment. As for Fox’s statement….Well Keane has gone and we’re going to fire Lambert next…not very likely is it?
Fox sounds like he is paul faulkners doppelgänger ffs
To date Fox has signed Gabby, Hutton and Lambert. Says it all.
A bit strange the OS hasn’t mentioned it,unless I’m fucking blind.
I genuinely dont think there is anything more to him going than is officially stated, the bloke is unhinged, I just cannot see that any top brass at our club have the intelligence for strategy. Lose tomorrow, and pray god Lambert does the right thing and quits, but again, he seems the opposite to Keane in that he just seems hell bent on clinging on, never accepting his own short comings. Get GT back on the board, and put Pulis in charge on the pitch, it may not be pretty to watch, but I cannot stomach any more of the innefective long ball / route one that we are already stuck with. Lambert out.
Pullis is long ball as well! Ffs
I never rated Keane as a manager or a man manager.
I don’t rate him as a coach either and I said so at the time of his appointment.
The truth is I can’t stand the bloke, his actual playing the game apart, where imo he was bordering world class.
It’s easy to say so with 20/20 hindsight, but I knew this appointment was doomed from the off.
The appointment stunk and his departure also stinks.
Are we really to believe he’s left because he can’t handle Villa and Ireland?
Total bollocks.
Something has gone on behind the scenes imo (the rumoured player fall out sounds about right) and his departure is yet another confirmation that we are currently a club in “massive turmoil”.
Or more accurately, a total bombsite, imo.
Look at the facts.
Lambert’s support team get sacked and then the replacement leaves after a few months?
There’s something seriously wrong and if this was a company share, I’d be shorting it.
Could it be that no-one agrees with Lambert still being in charge, the owner apart?
Was Keane bought in purely as an “enforcer”, who couldn’t make it work with modern players?
That would make sense to me.
What price Fox leaves much sooner than we all expect?
Spot on badger.
It looks like Keane has jumped before the bloody lot of them are pushed. Fox seems too smart to have taken this job under false pretences though…
Oh and don’t forget the Given becoming temporary assistant after being bombed out, debacle either
My thoughts are that this is a total joke and the Lerner/Lambert combination is just toxic for the club.
And the Circus rolls on!
I wonder what the next comical decision will be? Offload Benteke for 10m? Swap Delph for Cleverley? Appoint Clark as no.2?
How about offer lamberk a 20 yr deal nothing would surprise me anymore
Lerner..”look Paul, we need some stability here, after the debacle with Culverhouse we need a role model for the kids with a proven track record for coaching”,
Lambert..”Roy Keane?”
Lerner..”Good thinking..who suggested that?”
Lambert..”The bloke that sunk you financially and flounced off like a brat 5 day’s before the start of the season.”
Lerner..”Fuckin great idea, when can he start?”
And there you nail it Benno….it has become a joke shop, no plan b on the pitch, no long term strategy off it.
ya honestly i couldn’t give a f*** .. its impossible to measure exactly what effect he had on the squad and we are not exactly much improved. for every one step forward we have taken another back in a different area this season.
impossible to tell what he had brought unless you can decipher what all the softly softly .. in his short time here …. >insert mild platitude< .. etc We won't know what the effect will be afterwards unless we take a massive step towards better football and results.
As for commitments taking their toll or being split .. etc etc .. the next Ireland game is in 4 months time. …what kind of massive commitment does that entail? ( . for an assistant coach to a part time job)
The net effect is 80% less media coverage of Villa in Ireland, and a little less circus ( in a good and a bad way)
Funny as hell the IrishExaminer believes Villa fans thought of Keane in a high regard. Guess they haven’t read facebook/tweets and are going off… Maybe Irish Villa fans? Lol What a joke. McGrath happy Keane is focusing solely on Ireland, even Gary Gardner tweeted he’s gutted Keane left and he was brilliant to work with.
It’s claimed Keane offered to stay until they found a new assistant but that was rejected and they just wanted to cut ties.
Collymore asks some interesting questions:
1.Is the club any closer to being sold?
2. Why was Roy Keane brought to Villa Park unless there was a cast iron agreement that Villa was his priority, he’s a “football man” after all, so did the manager sound out which of his jobs was most important? Seemingly not.
3. What style of play are Villa actually playing? Passing team? Counter attacking? All i’m seeing is defending on the edge of the box? That’s not coaching, that’s hoping.”
