Portsmouth have signed Aston Villa youngster Michael Drennan. The 20-year old forward has recently returned to Aston Villa following a loan move to Carlisle. Drennan made 6 appearances for Carlisle starting 3 of those games.
The Portsmouth boss was determined to bring Drennan to Portsmouth after scouting Drennan for a good few months now.
“Michael can get in behind people and gives us the ability to get further up the pitch.
“He’s been a real threat whenever I’ve seen him play for Aston Villa,” boss Richie Barker.
“He’s a bit unusual in the sense that most youngsters today want to play short to feet.
“We have been watching him for a few months – I wanted to take him when I was at Crawley – but he was in and around Villa’s first team squad.”
Aston Villa currently have 8 players loaned out. Samir Carruthers, playing for MK Dons, has played the most football from the Villa loanee’s, making 23 appearances scoring 2 goals. Jack Grealish (Notts County) has played 22 games, one less than Carruthers but has scored a total of 4 goals. Darren Bent is third with 19 appearances with Fulham and has scored 3 goals.
I’m a bit confused by this line;
“He’s a bit unusual in the sense that most youngsters today want to play short to feet”
What exactly does that mean?
That he likes a long punt to his head?
Or a long ball to run onto, maybe.
I can’t say I know anything about him, so would appreciate any heads up about what kind of player he is.
He scored on Saturday, as did Grealish (five this season). Positive news from somewhere at least.
