Idrissa Gueye Set to Sign for Villa for £9 million

Aston Villa have agreed a transfer fee with Lille for midfielder Idrissa Gueye (25 years). Gueye is set to fly out to Birmingham today to undergo a medical and agree personal terms. But the main headline is that the transfer agreed is £9 million, making Gueye our biggest signing since Charles N’Zogbia. Gueye is also a very good player, he is described as a defensive box-to-box midfielder that could get the best out of Delph and Grealish. Gueye is essentially a replacement for Tom Cleverly who left for Everton.

Lille fans themselves have said that they’d be upset to lose Gueye who they highly rate and believe that he is firmly worth between £12-14 million. In more statistical terms, he was Whoscored 16th best player in the Ligue 1 last season. Gueye is a hardworking player who has great stamina and fitness as he made 32 appearances for Lille last season and has been compared to Claude Makélélé.

Aston Villa would beat the likes of Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Southampton as they also eyed for Gueye’s signature. But overall this would be a fantastic signing for Aston Villa and a very crucial one as well. It has been a long time since Aston Villa have splashed out this much cash and this would be another excellent signing alongside Richards. It appears as the tabloid links have been incorrect because Sherwood has so far scouted some very exciting players. Let’s just hope that all goes smoothly and Gueye becomes an Aston Villa player.

Announced today I reckon already seen a photo of him snapped at Birm airport maybe Chery to.Utv

  2. Given the signings we’ve made over the last 4 years I was beginning to think the tide had turned and we could be starting to show some ambition. But then I read he’s a replacement for Delph and my hopes are dashed.

To be fair, he does sound a very similar player to Delph.

      1. Maybe they could work well together, Play with 2 holding midfielders?

I thought that Gueye was supposed to be a replacement for Cleverly. So the pair would play together and allowing Sinclair, Grealish and Gil to support our forward?

          1. That’s what I said Adam. I can’t see Delph leaving therefore if we do sign Gueye he, along with Delph, could possibly play as holding midfielders.

For once I agree B6. The best defensive midfield we had was was when we had Taylor and Beotang hunting in a pair tbh.

This has been reported everywhere, Skysports, Birmingham mail, you name it. Today Gueye is flying in for a medical and to discuss personal terms. The initial negotiations have so far been positive

  4. A CM selection of Delph, Gueye, Sanchez, Westwood and potentially like the link for experience to Cambiasso would be quite enticing.

  5. This will be a great signing IMO and hopefully Delph stays as well. I’m still hopeful that Benteke will stay. Perhaps he’s waiting to see the height of our ambition before commiting again. I hope the Gueye signing is a statement of intent by the club. Now for Begovic. Wouldn mind Tom Ince, but not sure who owns him these days!

    1. Andrew avatar

Derby permanently signed Ince over the summer on a free so that won’t happen. Begovic is likely going to Chelsea, they’re offering him 4m a season wages.

Not sure about Begovic: the rumours seem to say that he’d rather be a bench-warmer at Chelsea than anything else?

Agreed Ardent. Would rather shine the seat of his pants than play and put money in his pocket. We don’t need that sort at Villa – would rather stick with Guzan

  6. Thanks for info on Ince! Derby are building well and I think that they will get automatic promotion next season!

Derby mate of mine is very pleased with Bent and Andy…

  7. Somewhere I read begovic was still happy moving to Chelsea even he’ll be number 2 to courtois, obviously money hungry mind you what player ain’t.

The one drawback to gueye is that he plays for Senegal, so that’s him out for Africa cup of nations every 2 years is it?

    1. 5 weeks, that’s if they get to the final.

    2. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Shit forgot about that. Even teams with big squads like city suffer from that

  9. We’ll just give him a one year contract then 🙂

Lille’s official Twitter have sent a farewell message to Gueye, seemingly all but confirm he’s a Villa player now.

    1. I think their wait until he has his work permit granted before they confirm the signing.

  11. He moved to France when he was 11, not sure how that impacts work permit requirements

    1. Badger123 avatar
      Badger123

He’d be naturalised French then, so I can’t see a permit being a problem.

Very surprised the deal hasn’t been announced yet though.
We’re probably trying to knock £50 a week off what he wants (joke).

      1. Badger…I’m not convinced thats a joke 🙂

Well, nothing would surprise me, but I can assure you it was 🙂

Given that it seems he’s coming, does anyone know how to pronounce his name?
Is it the same as Guy?
Or would it be more like Goyaay? or Goyer?
I was just thinking about songs 🙂

          1. I think I have your song……

            We are the mighty villa
We don’t care how much we pay.

I think he wears the name Gana on his shirt.
Let’s hope that doesn’t get associated with Banana or Guana or similar.

Come on, get it done Villa!

I thought Sherwood mated holding midfielders…sounds a solid signing to me…

    1. Andrew avatar

Not really a defensive midfielder, different than say Sanchez.

      1. Andrew…how dare you give me bad info…Tom Ince is STILL a Hull City player…I’ll never trust you again 🙂

        1. Andrew avatar

Holy crap, I swear he was signed when they signed Bent. Oops.

  17. ‘Sherwood is mating holding midfielders’…..lol 🙂

Hmm, it seems Southampton might be willing to slip us a crippler and outbid us, although you would think that the player coming over would mean the deal’s practically done?

    1. Andrew avatar

Reportedly a 4 year deal, announced tomorrow. Daily Mail aren’t ever correct. I mean they honestly think Spurs can get McCarthy.

L’Equipe are saying it’s 9 million Euros and bonuses, not pounds.

    http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Actualites/Idrissa-gueye-lille-est-bien-en-angleterre/571052

Bang that into Google translate, if you actually want to read it 🙂

  20. Andrew avatar

The Guardian’s linking us, Everton and Southampton with Anderlecht midfielder, Dennis Praet. We’ve reportedly inquired into making a bid for him. Supposedly his going rate is £10m.

      1. Andrew avatar

Praet-Grealish behind Benteke. Ayiyi that would be phenomenal.

  21. steve avatar

Are we bidding for Praet because the Gueye deal is not going to happen.

    1. Andrew avatar

Seeing they’re two different kinds of midfielders, probably not…

    2. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

I think preaet is an attacking midfielder gueye defensive so unlikeky

  22. Might mean that the Delph deal will. Like it that we’re being linked with reasonable players in the 9-10 million bracket though.

Oh I wasn’t panicking, was just replying to a comment above that asked if we were moving for Praet because Gueye isn’t happening? I also think he’ll be signed up today mate :p

Reports the deal is being scuppered by saint and marseille, but the rags printing this are non-trustworthy ones. I would like the news of this being completed today please…

  24. reports coming out Delph to city…does the kid really ant to destroy his career. have these players zero brains…nope it must be money

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

He’s mad if he goes there captain at villa just to sit on bench. Though he will get at least double wages so can’t blame him. I honestly don’t rate him he’s no major loss for us tbh

  25. ifiruledtheworld avatar
    ifiruledtheworld

I thought Delph was made odds on to stay at Villa? I must be seeing things, anyway, John Percy has tweeted that Sherwood is probably gonna bid 7 million for Praet while Gueye completes his move today. I’d take his word over any daily mail reports, to be honest..

    1. odds cut this morning…
