Friday Paper Talk

We begin with some departures. Shay Given is linked with a move to Liverpool, it’s understood that Rodgers is looking for an experienced goalkeeper to put pressure on Mignolet. It’s believed that a deal could happen if negotiations go smoothly, this deal would most likely be completed on deadline day. No fee is mentioned but I believe it would be a very low fee and Given would probably have to take a mild wage cut.

Either way, I hope this happens, the more players Villa can ship out permanently, the more players Paul Lambert can bring in last minute. Steer and Guzan are above the pecking order so there is absolutely no way Given will get another game at Aston Villa.

Crystal Palace are chasing midfielder Barry Bannan, Holloway has already tried to sign one Aston Villa player but this time, there is a good chance he’ll sign his man. Bannan was in talks with a move to Blackburn, but the move broke down. Now that a Premier League club is looking for his services it looks likely that Bannan would accept a move. The fee would be probably half a million quit, something similar to what Blackburn bid.

Article Link

Lastly, Aston Villa are interested in signing Tom Ince from Blackpool. Allegedly Aston Villa and Everton are both in negotiation with Blackpool over a move. It’s believed that the fee would be from £8-10 million for the highly-rated right winger. Aston Villa are in need of more squad depth and in particularly an attacking and defensive midfielder.

Article Link

It’s believed that Paul Lambert has a few transfer targets lined up before the end of the transfer window, but he needs to ship out a few more players before he can spend. An attacking midfielder is definitely on the cards, however some people believe that a defensive midfielder could also join Aston Villa before the transfer window closes.

  2. Given, Bannan going and if only Ireland was in there to this would be our Good Friday.

  3. Apparently PAUL Ince wants Ireland? Swap deal maybe as part for Tom Ince would be absolutely beautiful!!

Ireland would be even better. I was hearing that Blackpool wanted Bannan, but if Bannan can move to Crystal Palace and Ireland to Blackpool, that would be our best transfer business over the last few weeks!

      Correct

      1. Funny how stats, pundits and fans alike saw that our defence got stronger last season after Vlaar came back from is injury. But hey, don’t let facts get in the way of your little obsession. Then again, research isn’t your strong point is it?

        1. Wake up JimT, Vlaar is like a square wheel, useless

          2. Bit like your opinion then. No help to anyone and just breeds negativity we don’t need. Vlaar is a villa player. One that looks to be improving and improved our defence after his injury last year. We conceded less goal per game with him in the side I believe. But just be happy in your misery guys. We’ll support our team and giver them every opportunity to succeed. Not just put brick walls in their way with unrealistic targets. It says a lot that I see only 2 maybe 3 of you have this opinion, yet the rest of us say your wrong. Ever think you just might be.

I’m another one who dosnt rate vlaar to be honest his positioning and slowness is embarrasing and incredibly error prone. I’d much rather start with baker or Clark with Okore than that clown. Just my opinion

  7. Cardiff just signed Maximiliano Amondarain. Now I know no one’s probably heard of him, or very few have, but this is the kind of scouting we really need to be doing for example. U-20 Uruguay international and was pretty good in the recent U-20 world cup where they just lost out on penalties.

    1. Is he a centrehalf?

      1. Actually, yes he is.

  8. watching Chelsea at the moment and it seems the way they are set up all that’s missing is benteke i really hope the chosen one doesn’t realise this

    1. They just signed Eto’o and have Lukaku, they’re not going for Benteke. Relax a little.

Here’s a change of subject just watched Chelsea defending with 10 men v Bayern and Cahill was immense. Thanks for that mon u useless twat stick zat shite up ur arse sideways!! We could have a pairing if Cahill and Okore now then we would have a great defence for once.

Strangely, every time I’m seen Cahill since he left the Villa, I’ve not been that impressed.

Villa-Bolton, for example, just shocking, but that was a while back.

          1. Ignoring the Vlaar part, Cahill was very, very good. I’d probably say Cech was just as good if not better and saved them on a good 8-10 occasions, but Cahill was phenomenal.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

My point is that that’s another tough trophy to win that’s alluded the sky four.

      2. It was a game of big spenders to be fair. Bayern spent 62m on players this summer, 70m last summer. Although they definitely bought smarter than Chelsea.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

Chelski are so boring again under mourinho. They won’t be thrashing many teams this season but Shoukd have best defensive record with city

          1. It’s sad and pathetic, honestly. They have a good enough team to at least be an exciting counter-attacking team, kind of like Villa, but they don’t. They have a huge amount of fun, exciting, attacking mid’s and they prefer to use 5 defenders, 2 DM’s and so on. But hey, Mourinho did it at Inter and Madrid as well and that’s why he’s considered one of the best, despite the fact none of his teams have ever played good football.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

True but he is highly overrated. I’d love to see him manage a club like ours that give hima £10 m budget and see how good he really is. It’s a lot easier buying world class players who know what they are doing and are finished article. Btw Lerner has spend under £10 m this window I think that he is taking the puss especially with sky money and high earners of the books. Another season of Lerner wanting to escape relegation on the cheap for third season running

          2. I feel the thing most people forget is that we have 30 first team players still, and that’s after the loaned out and let go for free earlier. We don’t have the room. We’re not like Spurs, we don’t have players like Huddlestone who are still good enough for the likes of Hull who can actually afford them. We have absolutely no choice but to sell before we buy, simply for actual spots in the team. And I don’t fully blame Lerner on not spending, I have no doubt Lambert actually wanted these players as he likes building with young players, he’s gotten on with very few older players at Villa Park.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

Yes but mcleish and houllier didn’t really get on with senior players. The difference being they were mon senior players that he put on stupid money and long contracts no wonder they wernt interested. If lambert got his own senior players it would be different.

          3. It definitely would be different at the moment. However Lambert didn’t come into such a fortunate position in that retrospect and Villa have to live with it. Houllier’s signings weren’t hard to get rid of. Makoun left easily, Bent took a while I guess but he was a wanted man still. Things would have been great under him still though if he wasn’t ill. It might take another summer but Villa aren’t in a position to just go out and spend money on another couple players without offloading a fair few.

            1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
              OohAhPaulMcGrath

Well I was only speaking hypothetically.

  17. Badger123 avatar
    Badger123

    Very good point Andrew.

We all crave good footy, but does it win you anything?

Man U were very average, but pissed the league, for example.

I really despair, sometimes, when I look at the state of the game.

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Agree I’d rather have mcleish type football and win every game 1.0 than lambert football where we have to score 3 goals for a draw. If you notice these days it’s the teams that defend the best that usually win the major honours nowadays

    2. You’re right. However there’s a difference between Chelsea and entertaining. No one can match Barca’s amazing football. No one will. However teams like Inter under Mancini, Madrid before Mourinho, Bayern before Pep and under Pep, Dortmund, Milan, Juventus, PSG, Lyon, and even City under Mancini actually attempted it. Mourinho is the most defensive coach I’ve seen in a long time. They were worse than Celtic against Barcelona and Celtic had a great reason for defending 90 minutes, Chelsea don’t. Madrid didn’t, but they did.

      1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
        OohAhPaulMcGrath

I wonder if mourinho would make our crap defence any good now if he did that I would be impressed!

  19. Deferenz avatar

Well said Oohah concerning the ‘special’ one’. I’ve said it a number of times to friends that if he is so good why not prove it at a team that…. doesn’t have a never ending pot of cash, where you can’t buy any player in the world you want, where the media give you hardly a second thought unless a sky4 are trying to poach your best player, where you get no credit for beating a top team, and where the decisions in a game nearly always go in favour of the trendier opposition….Then we will see how special he is! UTV.

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Spot on deferenz I’m sure if lambert could sign players of £30m plus we would shoot straight up the table in a heartbeat.

    2. Because he doesn’t need too, people love him and he’s not going to drop down because every big club wants him. He’s never going to drop down to Villa, Valencia, Lazio just to name clubs in the 3 leagues he’s managed at that don’t have the funding he’s gotten at the 3 clubs. It’s simply the fact he doesn’t need too and never will.

  20. Lionheart avatar
    Lionheart

Lads didn’t he win the UEFA cup and followed it the season after by winning the Champions league with a team with not a endless pot of cash..

You can knock him anyway you want but he proved himself and got the glamour club jobs by doing just that.. then at Chelsea he won the league back to back in his first two seasons in English football.. Mancini couldn’t do it with Citys endless pot..

Inter were nowhere near winning the champions league season in season out and no one had them in the top four of five teams to win it when he won it for them..

Also at real he did finish above the greatest team some people are saying thats ever played..

Ok he’s arrogant etc but this nonsense that he should go to some club with no money and do it is ridiculous.. we bang on and on about getting the best players in to our clubs yet we want Mourinhio to ignore the best jobs.. 🙂

    1. I agree with the last part, he has no reason to ignore the best jobs. He’d be an idiot too, because he other than Pep is probably the most wanted man by any club.

I disagree about Inter though. I mean the fact they shouldn’t have been in the final due to Toure had a wrongfully ruled out goal should have knocked them out, however Inter had an incredible team. They had the best goal keeper going in Cesar, 2 of the best CB’s in tn the “end” of their prime years in Lucio and Samuel, Zanetti who can still out run most players now, let alone 3 years ago and Maicon in his actual prime as well, Eto’o, Milito, Pandev and Balotelli. Cambiasso, Motta and Sneijder in their prime. I mean these players were absolutely amazing, however before Mourinho they had… Mancini. Just like with City, they suffered under Mancini. They had all the tools to be winning the CL and they did.

      1. Lionheart avatar
        Lionheart

Andrew but they failed with the same defence year in year out.. plus Cesar Lucio and co didn’t do anything the season after once Mourhinio left did they?

        1. You’re right, however under Mourinho, none of them got injured. The next season Cesar got a serious back injury, which is why his forms dropped so badly, he’s continued to suffer from it. Samuel got seriously injured and was out the for 3/4 of the season, Milito started firing blanks and then got seriously injured and was out most of the season, Ranocchia, Cordoba and Chivu were/are poor defenders, Motta got injured under Benitez. I mean they were absolutely destroyed by injuries, much like Villa under Houllier were. The only players that under Mourinho weren’t hampered by injuries were Eto’o, Cambiasso and Zanetti and players like Biabiany, Obi, Coutinho, Obiora, Alibec were forced into the deep end as Mourinho never played the younger players and still doesn’t develop anyone.

    2. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Fair point but you have to agree that it is much easier to challenge for top honours when you have top players. For example hypothetically if lambert before the window closes suddenly signed messi, ronaldo, iniesta and kompany we would overnight become favourites to at least finish top 4 not because lambert has suddenly become a better manager but because we have signed 4 world class players.

      1. Lionheart avatar
        Lionheart

OOh ahh but he has earned the RIGHT to be at clubs who have mega money.. there not employing him for the sake of it..

He smashed it with Porto and he won it with Inter.. what have Inter done in the champions Lge the seasons before and the following seasons.. even Rafa flopped there..

He might be arrogant and play dirty but you can’t fault or knock the mans C.V

Didn’t he go 8 years without losing a home game anywhere.. that is a phenomenal record no matter what clubs you have been at…

        1. Wouldn’t at all say Benitez flopped, he had them 6th with over half their first 11 injured for the majority of the time he was there.

        2. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
          OohAhPaulMcGrath

True but it’s a lot easier to achieve when uv got the finished article. Imagine all our youngsters now all peaking at the same time we would have a much better squad. Mourinho dosnt develop any youngsters except joe cole who played well for awhile under jm

Just wanted to say, not sure if anybody else read it but ooh ah said he would prefer mcdraws football instead of Lamberts! His opinion is garbage, I’ve honestly never said that about anybody before cause i believe everybody has a right to their opinion but come on mcdraw would have been the death of aston villa, Lambert is the future! Ok he has some faults but as everybody is rightly pointing out, so do the best managers in the world! I hav absolutely no problem with Lambert buying young hungry players but my only problem is why can’t we buy young hungry players that are more than 1-4 mill? Its not the price that matters but the quality of the youngster, now tonev, bacuna, okore, helenius, luna, they might all turn out to be great players in a couple years but why not buy a young player that’s already great and potentially world class? We hav a squad now but it really does lack quality besides benteke. Still i am optimistic for the season and hopeful we will get that creative player we desperately need. Vlar is a decent defender, no he’s not Paul mcgrath but at the moment he is the best we have and stats and facts prove that! Ooh ah has no basis for his argument except what goes on in his mcdraw loving mind! Which is fairly 1 track we can all see.
