Deadline Day Signings Unlikely

Aston Villa have been pursuing Wes Hoolahan all day and despite putting two fresh bids today it appears as though Norwich are just uninterested in doing any business with Aston Villa. The two clubs relationship has been sour since Paul Lambert controversially quit Norwich to manage Aston Villa.

Aston Villa have identified Wes Hoolahan as the ‘number 10’ player but it now appears as though Hoolahan will most likely join West Brom on loan for the remainder of the season.

Paul Lambert has also come out and said that if he fails to land a ‘number 10’ his current side will be able to cope for the remainder of the season. Against Liverpool and West Brom we’ve seen Weimann and Bacuna play the number 10 role and they’ve both done a fairly decent job of it.

Villa could possibly still sign someone, but that appears very unlikely with time running out very quickly. The only business Villa have completed so far today is loaning out Enda Stevens to Doncaster for the remainder of the season and Shay Given will be staying at Villa Park.

  1. Newsflash Lambert. Hoolahan is not the only decent midfielder out there and we desperately need one!

    1. Bham mail wev pulled put of WH deal and no signings today. Well there’s a shocker never have guessed

      1. Lerner and Lambert would have only acted if we were nearer the bottom. Since we’ve had a couple of wins, they’re happy with mid table, and just taking the money.

          1. You know “the money” that Lerner has mysteriously made from converting loans to equity. FFS these people must think the earth is flat. Who with half a brain can’t see that Lerner has (so far) made less than nothing?

          2. The natural increase in the value of the club, massive increase in TV money. Lerner will pocket plenty DS. Don’t be a muppet.

  2. Wouldnt be surprised if the Hoolahan to the Baggies rumour is an attempt to make Villa up their bid to meet the valuation that Norwich put on him. Wouldnt be too surprised if this one still happens last minute!

  3. Lerner what an embarrassment where are the Lerner supporters who were saying let’s see what he will do in January. A disgrace the club are unable to compete with championship teams. I’m starting to feel sorry for Lambert. Lerner out

    1. We’re not allowed to comment cus we’ve had a decent couple of games.

    2. Fair enough Ted. But if you ignore Chelsea and Man U I’m not bothered what the rest have done. January is not generally a good time to do business. I think if I was Lerner or Lambert I would be reasonably chilled with what we have done earlier in the window. Looking at the league we will struggle to get into the top 8. Why spend money to try and get that?

  4. Mat Kendrick says we are done for the evening. While I agree about Wiemann – Bacuna and believe we do have proper coverage in most areas in the squad, it really is a shame we are calling it a night now. Especially after the club stated earlier this week that new signings would be coming and that Lambert himself was looking into a number of options. Are you telling me the club couldn’t come to terms with not even 1 of those 12 options or so?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Hoolahan ends up staying at Norwich to be honest. I’m just not sure how serious West Brom truly are.

    1. I am sure Hoolahan stays where he is atm. About discussion for No 10 – don´t forget N`zog. He will come back and gives us at least another squad player who could help us in the last third of the campaign, especially if we have injury problems.
Furthermore, a lot of our players can be used in different positions. Not perfect but a way to come over difficult times.

      1. No, I totally agree – I think we’ll be fine with our current squad.

N’Zog ‘may’ be back this season. I do worry about his injury and the lack of actual information about his status. So I wouldn’t hold my breathe on him making a large impact this season. Although you are right about rotating players, in our current squad we still have players like Gardner and Helenius who could also in theory play in that No 10 spot. Nevertheless, in a perfect world it would have been great to see at least 1 permanent deal, even for the youth squad.

  5. i am not overly concerned. to be honest.
obviously disaapointed i didn’t get to see an exciting new signing. but not overly concerned.
Janaury is the window of mass inflation, its a sellers market, it always has been
I know most of you don’t care about much we spend as long we get some one – i still think we can get better value in the summer.

The other thing is i think barring injuries that we can win 5/6 more games before the season is out with our current squad.

I am absolutely fascinated with what will happen in the summer.
i think we have made slow but steady progress under lamabert so far.
there has been many a low and mistakes along the way but i don’t see why that shouldn’t be expected.

overall i think we can finish 10th this season
thats not the end of my ambition for villa
I want to see more loftier targets in the future

but from Point A – Mcleish leaves .. and we had Squad x
38 pts .. dour football, finishing
    16th

    point b
    12/13 season
    better footbal for second half,
    41 pts finished 15th
    largescale Squad upheaval

Point C – just past midpoint of this season

currently 10th 27 pts 15 games or so to go
football has fluctuated from awful to all out entertainment

    I think thats fair progress.
Lets hope it continues in the vein of the last two games performances for another few games

I am speaking about lambert not Lerner

  6. Nothing to complain. More interesting how we develop on the pitch and not on the transfer front. We have quite a decent squad, maybe a little bit thin. I am sure we weren´t ready to pay over the top for 31year old Hoolahan. And that’s absolutely right. He would be a nice acquisition but a short-term one. Overall, January isn´t the best time to do business.
Nothing wrong with this. Bertrand and Holt are very good loan deals, so that’s it. More interesting we can put in a good performance and collect something tomorrow.

  7. Utterly ridiculous! I said ages ago we should hav given up on hoolahan and moved onto different targets but obviously we couldn’t cause their wage demands kept makin Lambert fall over ffs we hav desperately needed a creative midfielder for years and even when Lambert said at the start of the window a number 10 was priority we don’t get one! Just shows him to be a fool and villa to be useless in the transfer market! How many players did we sign in the summer? 8 was it? How many are even average? Bacuna is all i can think of, terrible terrible terrible!

    1. Cant agree more Kerryvillan, more bullshit PR at the start of the window to make us think we may buy someone of quality , to be let down and disappointed once again… But how can we expect any different, with an absent owner and a useless CEO.

    2. It’s easy to blame Lambert. He can only work with the moneylender gives him. Villa are a disgrace Lerner is destroying the club Lerner out

  8. Colonius81 has totally put things in2 reality and hes spot on

saying this i am disappointed hoolahan probably won’t be landed. both bacuna and weimann played the role well. but hoolahan would fit this role with experience but iam confident the squad is getting stronger each year under lambert

13/2 villa away 2 everton slap a tenner on

    1. Assuming Hoolahan doesn’t come it Is just down to the ill feeling between the clubs or Norwich do genuinely feel they need the player and can’t afford to replace him. Slightly disappointing but it does appear that we are moving slowly forward. It’s not exciting but it Is progress. The last three games have shown that we are capable of better performances so let’s wait and see.

      1. Transfer deadline day latest: Amanda Knox has turned down a move to Fiorentina.

  9. We’ll to me it poses this question, if Lambert was in for Hoolahan and by all accounts he was, he must have realised the need for that position so why has he let sleeping dogs lie, why has he not covered that players position with other options, has it become OK don’t matter we will carry on and its not my fault. I’m a little bemused as what’s going on.

  10. Oh fucking no!…..twitter full of rumours that Benteke not with squad on their departure to Everton….rememember, I am ONLY REPEATING what I have read on twitter. So dont shoot the messenger!

    1. BANG!! Mate i wouldn’t read alot into that maybe for whatever reason he’ll be meeting up with the team later.players do this you know there’s alot of shitestirrers out there.

      1. Apparently Benteke is heading up on his own later. He was constipated and couldn’t get on the bus.

  11. Where’s all this bollox come from at the start of the window coming out of the club stateing lerner acknowledges we need additions & some money will be made available to the manager.what bullshite i won’t believe another fucking word anymore.

  12. I didn’t think that we’d be breaking the bank this window.

We haven’t lost any significant players and we have brought two decent loans i , one of whom looks well worth signing if he continues to play well.

They’ve seen enough to know that we’re not in trouble this season, and I for one would rather see some of the younger lads given a chance once we’re completely safe.

Looking at a lot of the other sides and there have been some piss poor panic buys to swell the ranks.

Be great to see Gardner and others in a Villa shirt before the end of the season.

      1. That’s a better option in my opinion.

I always associate this window with Torres to Liverpool & Carroll to Newcastle than great signings.

    1. I hadn’t thought about that. I would love to see Gardner get a game .. and in an attacking role too.

i remember when MacLeish started to play him.

the firs few games he was making these runs into the box and had a couple of efforts saved or hit a post i think. ( i remember one particular header)

after those initial few games he got forward less and less and i rarely seen him within shooting range.

either the team form or the tactics or both just sucked the attacking endeavor out of him.

Helenius and gardner are 2 options for that CAM role
that for whatever unknown reason have not been good enough to start there so far this season

  13. Giddy…Lerner is a lying wanker. The sooner he fucks off the better. The twat doesnt even fucking speak to the fans to tell us his ambitions/plans. No wonder the ignorant twat got divorced….lack of communication probably cited in the divorce papers.
Fuck off Lerner, Red Bull and any other twat who wants to change our name, our ground or our colours….and fuck off anyone who lacks the funds and ambition to take this great club forward!

    1. Understand your frustration Langford but how can Lerner be a liar and not communicate with us?

      1. Ah here some of the notions on here are so unrealistic.

        Langford Villa,

not being funny but 40m? really top 6?

How long do you think it would take us to get there one season? 2 seasons? 40m per season you say or just 40m say in the summer plus existing squad?

Lets compare that to the top 7 teams spending and their squads

What did the top each spend this summer taking into account the squads they already had in place!

i would you would need to quadruple that figure and you still wouldn’t be garunteed 6th ..

so lets just ignore man city, and chelsea who will outspend you until the apocalypse no matter what you throw at it.

Man city’s first 11 team cost nearly 500m in transfers alone. they probably 100m a year in wages

Chelsea not far behind. they currently have 24 players out on loan, including one at villa! a lot of wages for nothing there

Arsenal .. cash reserves of over 100m. ( thats just cash!!!! most transfers are installment based!) havn’t finished outside the top 4 in a decade.
spent 40m + on one player this summer

        liverpool?
under rogers they have spent apprx 95m on incoming players over two seasons
to supplement the squad they had under dagleish

        totenham
spent 100m on players they are 5th!
        fair play to them
Totenhams squad minus bale plus 100m .. to get 5th so far?
plus the sacking of an expensive manager to boot

        Everton!
this is the club in my opinion we should learn from.
They gave a promising unproven manager 10 years and sold to buy for that decade.
but if you want to use Everton as an example then you can’t complain about Lerners spending.
they didn’t spend either unless they sold a player for big money

        Finally currently 7th – Man u
Won the Premier league last year but had to spend 70m this year to achieve 7th so far!

how can you honestly say 40m will make us top 6 ?

        1. It’s Lerner’s fault.

He’s making fortunes out of us apparently when he should spend half of his personal wealth.

        2. Because lets take our current team. We have a good enough keeper, a good enough CB in Vlaar, a good enough LB in Bertrand, a good enough midfielder in Delph, and a good enough front 3. I’d even say a good enough AM in Bacuna if given the chance. That leaves 40m for… A RB, a CB and 2 midfielders. That’s arguably what we’d need for a top 6 finish. This isn’t including the depth we have and the possibility that a few of our signings won’t come good. You can get those 4 positions for 40m. So yes, it is in fact possible.

  14. Agreed langford the fucking shite they spin is unbelieveable mate, when that yankee wanker ever spoke to his missus was probably through his p.a when they were still married.fucking arsehole

  15. Lerner has never spoke a word properly for over a year now, what does he care,

No one should be shocked at what we have done this window, the club us safe from relegation so why even spend £1.5M on average shite like Hoolahan. This window again proves to me any golden pot of money is bollocks and Lerner just wants to sell.

    why spend/waste money now …

        1. May as well get someone in the Summer when he knows who is going and who is staying.

Nobody other than Man U & Chelsea have made a decent signing.

    1. Where were you on Wednesday night?
      Where were you?
      Where were you?
Where were you on Wednesday night?
Wheeere were you on Wednesday night?

  16. nah it’s me, he forgot the bit where I said I wont be commenting on matches and only on stuff that affects who owns the club because that is all that matters.

  17. Sorry lads, I’ve been busy doing my tax return and just haven’t had time to look at the site.
I see it was misbehaving earlier today (I suspect a dodgy database, which I sorted, but might have taken time to get through to the server), but now suspect it’s ok.
    Can anyone confirm please?

    1. Transfer deadline day latest: Amanda Knox has turned down a move to Fiorentina.

  18. At the end of the day you can’t blame lerner, yes its him who has set the wage structure and transfer budget but its Lambert who makes the signings! He was given this budget at the start of the season, he spent every penny of it on squad players and didn’t sign any creative midfielder which anybody who has ever watched us knows we desperately need! Now in the summer i thought maybe the ones he wanted just weren’t available and i was willing to wait til Jan to see if either somebody in the squad to step up to the plate or if not we would buy one, instead we get holt on loan who could prove useful but who still hasn’t improved the 1st team and bertrand on loan which i think is a great signing as lb is a serious problem area for us (again Lamberts fault) so essentially the only player that has actually improved our team is a loan that Lambert has already said we probably won’t be signing permanently! I really don’t know why signing 8 squad players on 15k a week is better than signing 3 players on 40k who actually improve our team! I blame Lambert for all this not lerner.

    1. “I really don’t know why signing 8 squad players on 15k a week is better than signing 3 players on 40k who actually improve our team! ”

Totally agreed, Kerry and it’s something some of us have been saying for ages.
But I blame Lerner (or most likely his bellend 2IC) for that policy.
I just struggle to believe that any manager wouldn’t want expensive quality, if he was given the chance.

Did anyone really expect anyone to come in?
Hoolihan was the only one in Lambert’s sights, imo.

As for anyone expecting a decent spend in the summer, no chance.
This is as good as it gets, you’ll see.
Probably £20-25 mill max outlay, I’ll bet, which is peanuts, given the rise in revenue the club will see.
And agreed, Lerner is still owed money.
But he won’t be for long.
I think some people forget he bought the club for pennies (Villa £69 mill, the shit £82 mill, iirc and they don’t even own their ground, let alone anything else).

      I’ll ask again.
Is the site working ok now?
It seems it is to me.

      1. fine here with Win 8 and chrome

as to all the points, your right he brought it for a song and even if the debts were there he could sell and break even at around £150M

Question is anyone out there with that ?

Bearing in mind they do not have to spend on infrastructure to start with.
