Cleverley signs for Everton; I don’t expect excitement in the window

It’s been confirmed that Tom Cleverley has signed a five year contract to play for Everton.
Speculation in the Daily Star says that he’s on £50 thousand a week.
Is that too much?
It probably and definitely is in my opinion, but don’t forget this is a free transfer, where wages make up for the lack of a transfer fee, hence in this sort of deal the wages will be even more ridiculous than usual.

The question here is did Cleverley want Everton over Villa regardless? It has been suggested that he just prefers to be up north and if so, that’s fair enough in my eyes.

But could it just that we wouldn’t match that money?
That same £50k a week would certainly have put the player amongst the higher echelons at the club.

But let’s not forget Sherwood said he wanted to keep the player.

It may well be the case that there was never a chance that Cleverley was going to stay at the Villa, whatever happened and if so, well that’s football for you and you can’t complain too much.

Indeed, his five or six decent performances in the thirty odd games he played for us never convinced me and there’s not a chance in hell that I’d rate him at that sort of money, even on a free.
But it seems Sherwood did.

And if we weren’t willing to compete against a club that have equally large monetary problems as us, for a player that Sherwood wanted, where does that leave us in this transfer window?

My expectations in the coming months are for yet another period of austerity.
And I predict that those saying we are going to have a massive clearout are going to prove to be very wide of the actuality.
Even if we sell Benteke.

Put it this way, I’m in no rush to apply for a season ticket, I’m afraid.

  1. i know there is a lot of doom and gloom about with us not being able to compete with other clubs for transfer fees and wages but don’t blame Lerner directly i think this fair play malarkey hits villa harder than most clubs. hence Lerner being one of three chairmen to vote against when it was first mooted around the same time he lost interest in being a billionaire being told when to spend his money i cant think of any player being sold against his will, for profit sure we sold milner, barry, young. they all wanted away where lerner has gone wrong is not making aston villa more profitable so that more money can be spent if the whole Saudi royal family bought villa they still couldn’t spend what is required, until we can generate more profit

how come southampton can compete. everton have been in dept for years and can compete . randy has mismanaged the club and now we suffer unless he decides to sell. randy has lost interest in his toy so wont spend any significant amount on transfers or wages. the quicker he sells the better. watching him at the cup final really pissed me off . hasn’t been at villa park all season but showed up at wembley just in case we pulled of a miracle . i for one just want him gone. i will never trust the man again . its funny the browns fans used to come on saying what a bad owner he was and most villa fans could not understand were they where coming from. five years later most of us now understand why.

  2. maybe there are more overheads at the villa could do with someone with accounting skills to give us a rough guide as to how much can be spent without falling foul of these restrictions

  3. domingo avatar

more overheads , like paying his family trust fund interest on dept randy ran up mismanaging the club. im fed up with excuses . if benteke goes do you honestly think he will give sherwood the £32m plus say another £25m to spend. i’m guessing no. he will use a good chunk of the benteke money to pay off some of the dept to his family trust fund . now if he does that will the selling price of the club be reduced because there will be less dept owed to his family. i doubt it. a good accountant can pull many tricks look at google or starbuck been operating in britain for year but hardly paid a penny in tax. im not saying randy is a bad man but he comes from a banking family and i bet he has great accountants .

  4. ill repeat if it was all about recouping his personnel wealth more players would of been sold. not one player has been sold for profit, only because they were crap or wanted to leave which we haven’t done to bad regarding fees received i know accountants can make up figures all i ask is for someone a bit savvy to explain to me in layman’s terms how much that aston villa can spend on the playing staff wages /transfer funds before we start to get penalties also am i right to believe if we are to be sold to someone who has done due diligence then i am sure benteke cannot be sold by Lerner, something to do with assets as at last audit

Delph is named as a sub for today’s game, if anyone is interested.

And Giddy, I think replies should be ok now 🙂
The Youtube video gallery was causing a problem, fwiw.

    1. BADGER those YOU tube links should be banned on here can’t speak for everyone but it really fucks my handset about.

    2. From what I can judge Badger he should be on? Rooneys the biggest crap player on the pitch.

  8. here’s a bit i found on FFP from the bbc website unless things have been changed we are bolloxed we are on very close to the max on losses

  9. it would help if i posted the link durrr! http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29361839

    1. Isn’t platini relaxing the fair play rules ?

      1. domingo avatar
        domingo

there is talk of them being relaxed and with the new tv deal as long as we stay in the prem there should be no problem.

  10. for a short period i believe so that PSG can catch up

  11. its ok saying its no problem unless we can increase income we cant compete in the transfer market no matter who owns/funds us

    1. Andrew avatar

Been trying to make that argument on here for ages. It’s so true. But we can still spend a fair bit of money if we sell, and they are loosening up on the FFP rules so yeah, I think there will be a lot of leeway for money for a lot of clubs.

        Sell who exactly?
Take out Benteke, Delph and erm…
And the squad isn’t worth £30 mill

        1. Andrew avatar

Could probably get 20ish million for Guzan, Hutton, Lowton, Cissokho, Bennett, Luna, Senderos, Richardson, Sanchez, Gil, N’Zogbia, Weimann and Kozak.

  12. i think it was the wages that done us originally they are now under control but what value do any of our players command benteke, delph that’s about it we need tom fox to do his bit with a lucrative sponsor, possibly (wash my mouth out with soap)ground renaming more income has to be generated if we are to move forward and never see this embarrassing set of results ever again

    1. domingo avatar
      domingo

the new tv deal has gone up .
Combined broadcast revenue up by 48% . thats from bbc news website .
our wages were out of control silly wages paid to players who did not justify them. we can all name the players so there is no point me doing it . but most of these players have now gone. yes we are still stuck with a few but most of them are now in the last year of there contracts.
there is no excuse to not invest in the squad now .

      1. yes but they are worthless with little or no resale value we are £95 million in debt if we reach £105 million we could face sanctions or point deductions the new tv money doesn’t come in until the end of the season

        1. domingo avatar
          domingo

if we sell benteke for the reported buyout and sell the likes of Lowton, Cissokho Gil, N’Zogbia, Weimann then that should bring us to around £40m . im pretty sure you can raise 10 million from them. that leaves us with £40+ million for new players. we dont have to go deeper into dept. i’m pretty sure i read we actually made a profit this year and with the likes of bent and vlaaar leaving + the players i have already listed that should give us some wages to pay new players. i dont see how we cant spend a minimum of £40m this summer.

Florentin Pogba the name keeps popping up CB at St Ettiene

    1. Andrew avatar

Good CB replacement for Vlaar. Pogba, Clark, Okore and Baker. That’s a hell of a CB group. That would mean we would have a 22, 24, 24 and 25 year old CB group. Keep those 4 for 8-10 years together and we could have a hell of a CB group.

      1. badger123 avatar
        badger123

        “That’s a hell of a CB group”

        No Andrew, it really isn’t.
This is the bit you don’t get, imo.
It’s pretty much the same back line that has looked so poor all season, a few odd games apart.

It may well be an up and coming back line, but it’s near relegation standard and needs IMPROVING!

Exactly the same as the midfield, where those who expect Gardner to suddenly be a saviour are wrong too.

And the same in our attack, where somehow we can apparently replace Benteke for peanuts, while the rest of the attack is also near relegation quality.

By all means, stick with the up and coming, but we need some proper quality in there to help them along.
Championship and cheap foreign players will just not cut it and if we go down that road again, we’ll be, well, going down the same old road.

        1. Andrew avatar

          Badger
Our problem is, is injuries to our defense. Did we at all ever have the same back 4 during the season for say a consecutive run of 5 games? I don’t think we did. I honestly don’t think our CB’s did a hell of a lot wrong. If we have a fit Clark playing 30-32 games next season, we’ll be in a lot better shape. I don’t think I’m missing anything. I think our CB’s are of quality, our fullbacks are not and our midfield isn’t nor is the attack. I do think however Baker, Clark and Okore are a good foundation and getting someone like Pogba in to partner Clark would give Villa a great back 2. I’d also say get Villa a keeper that’s actually good enough all around and not just a shot stopper like Given and Guzan.

    2. George friend rumours now too.

  14. So bent has been released and Vlaar has been offered a new contract. FFS RON PLEASE DON’T SIGN IT!!!

  15. on a slightly different subject i know benteke wants away but i don’t think there is much interest from all the reported clubs allegedly chasing him at the £32.5 mill price tag all the media frenzy is being created by kiss me quick or whatever his name is and benteke talking to his Belgian teamates someone will come in with a £20mill offer and villa will probably make an offer he cant refuse again if you read all these various clubs blogs then they don’t want him and think hes overrated,

    1. I was looking at the odds of Benteke joining Chelsea (8/1 with skybet) and he is odds on (5/6) to stay. If he was to stay would his heart be with Villa? The fact he has stated he wants Champions League would suggest not. I’m guessing the 8/1….12/1 with Ladbrokes, may just be a decent bet.

      1. PS…With the signing of Ings to Liverpool immanent I definitely can’t see Benteke going there, Which will no doubt upset oohah 😉

      2. Andrew avatar

But he’s only ever said he has ambition of Champions League football. He didn’t say he wanted it next season, so there’s a chance. He’s never once said he’s unhappy at Villa, and if I remember correctly there’s no quotes in the articles from his agent claiming they’ll do everything to leave.

        1. You’d have to be pretty bloody stupid to come out at the age of 24 saying I want champions league football, but not next season, around the same time as it was revealed that there is a 32.5 million pound release clause in his contract! At the same time he has said that his season with Aston Villa is over so he doesn’t think about Villa and he is leaving any transfer talk to his agent. 🙂

          1. Andrew avatar

Fair point of course. He told his agent what he wants but he personally hasn’t said he’s looking to leave. I have no doubts he will, but my point is is that I think he’d have his heart in it next season if he does end up staying.

  16. domingo avatar
    domingo

but its all just paper talk. if he goes to chelsea or utd i honestly wouldn’t mind BUT if he goes to a spurs or liverpool i would be a bit pissed off. chelsea are being linked with falcao and utd with Higuaín . both of these would command much higher wages than benteke and would seem a much bigger risk than getting benteke who is premier league proven. i mean falcao to chelsea what a joke he was a disaster for utd and has scary wages lol.
if benteke does go i just hope its straight cash and no silly player exchanges which never seem to work out well.

    1. I can’t for the life of me see Chelsea signing Falcao. I think Benteke will end up at Chelsea. He’s an ideal replacement for Drogba. Gut feeling it’ll be cash and Bamford on a season long loan.

      1. domingo avatar
        domingo

my chelsea mate has been saying the same (the big glory hunting bastard) . i just really dont want him going to spuds , cant stick them and there chairman. was reading today they are preparing a £20m bid i hope randy sends them away with a flea in there ear. its time to play hardball with benteke’s agent . if the release is £32m let him know he wont be sold for a penny less than that.

        1. Randy wont sell him for less that 30 imo. To be fair to Lerner he has always stood his ground regarding sales to get the best price available (Young, Downing and Barry spring to mind) I can see us taking Bamford on a season long loan as part of the deal, that’s the kind of shit that Villa do!! Just hope Sherwood gets all of the funds if he does go.

          1. Andrew avatar

When has Villa accepted players on loan as part of deals? I can see us going for Bamford but it won’t be part of the Benteke deal. Rather see if we could get Wilson off United permanently first with Van Gaal’s love for spending.

          2. When have I stated that Villa have accepted loan players as part of a deal? You clearly mis-read. I stated it is the kind of thing that Villa do, as a reference to the Milner/Ireland transfer. At no time did I say Villa HAD taken player(s) on loan as part of any deal, 🙂

          3. Andrew avatar

Or you didn’t specify correctly? lol. “I can see us taking Bamford on a season long loan as part of the deal, that’s the kind of shit that Villa do!!” Sounds like we typically take players on loan, but maybe I did misunderstand you. I guess, maybe. I guess 1 time means we do it all the time? 😉

          4. Try not to lose to much sleep, you’re forgiven for misunderstanding if that makes you feel better. 😉

          5. Andrew avatar

I was worried, I appreciate it.

          6. Good lad.

  17. i know its all paper talk and it had the desired effect on the lead up to the final, a totally disinterested team believing their star man was away after the game if the media was to be believed, and benteke and his agent not doing anything to stop it, this is where the losing mentality remarks come from if truth be known

BBC are saying Bent has signed for Derby. Good luck to him, he saved our Premier League status 2 seasons in a row, and then got dumped in the bomb squad by Lambert.

Seems also that he only has very positive things to say about Villa and our supporters.

Wish him well, 12 goals in 17 games last season on loan at Derby. We could have used a few of those…

  19. Andrew avatar

Does anyone actually think Herd can make it at Villa? He’s had a couple good games for Villa but I just can’t see how Sherwood thinks he could impress in pre-season, no better than Championship level. And seeing he’s injured all the time there’s just no point keeping him.

    1. DSVilla avatar
      DSVilla

Saw him in a pub/restaurant on a family outing a couple of months ago. He was on crutches. I don’t know how far he has got with his fitness, but it will be difficult for Sherwood to make a judgement one way or the other at the moment. Will he make it at Villa? Probably not but he did, as you say, put in a couple of good performances.

      1. Andrew avatar

He did, I actually like him as a DM more so than a fullback like some fans. Think he could make a semi-decent squad player but nothing more. I honestly think he should be released.

It’s not the group that’s involved with Smith, Sky Sports have said its between the American and Chinese groups. I wasn’t expecting it to be the consortium involving Smith anyway, he was announced in the running, so it wouldn’t make sense for him to then request being revealed while the final talks are taking place for the takeover. Some are saying the American consortium is a group of businessmen.

Probably right though any consortium is bad it shows they haven’t enough money and struggle to raise funds I’d rather have Lerner than a consortium

  22. if someone has done due diligence then nothing can be sold without the possible new owners consent as every thing would of been audited plus i think Sherwood was in the know when he took out that bet
