Cleverley signs for Everton; I don’t expect excitement in the window

It’s been confirmed that Tom Cleverley has signed a five year contract to play for Everton.
Speculation in the Daily Star says that he’s on £50 thousand a week.
Is that too much?
It probably and definitely is in my opinion, but don’t forget this is a free transfer, where wages make up for the lack of a transfer fee, hence in this sort of deal the wages will be even more ridiculous than usual.

The question here is did Cleverley want Everton over Villa regardless? It has been suggested that he just prefers to be up north and if so, that’s fair enough in my eyes.

But could it just that we wouldn’t match that money?
That same £50k a week would certainly have put the player amongst the higher echelons at the club.

But let’s not forget Sherwood said he wanted to keep the player.

It may well be the case that there was never a chance that Cleverley was going to stay at the Villa, whatever happened and if so, well that’s football for you and you can’t complain too much.

Indeed, his five or six decent performances in the thirty odd games he played for us never convinced me and there’s not a chance in hell that I’d rate him at that sort of money, even on a free.
But it seems Sherwood did.

And if we weren’t willing to compete against a club that have equally large monetary problems as us, for a player that Sherwood wanted, where does that leave us in this transfer window?

My expectations in the coming months are for yet another period of austerity.
And I predict that those saying we are going to have a massive clearout are going to prove to be very wide of the actuality.
Even if we sell Benteke.

Put it this way, I’m in no rush to apply for a season ticket, I’m afraid.

There are many of us going to be very disappointed come the deadline, imo 🙁

    1. I totally agree Badger, papering over the cracks comes to mind, I don’t know what to think after knowing Sherwood was partly to blame on the team he put out, been thinking about it he had sod all to use, he had wimps because Lambert was the one that fetched them in. I’m still with Sherwood till I see if he’s the man , being honest I’m worried.

Ffs calm down the season only finished last week , plenty of time for things to happen yet

    1. Badger123 avatar
      Badger123

      Calm down?
      I’m not even excited Markham.
Which is a bit worrying, as if we can’t keep any sense of improvement going, with Lerner investing some decent money, things are going to go very flat again, very quickly, imo.

Yes, there’s plenty of time, but I’m simply making a prediction.

  3. Randy wont pay any decent fees/salaries…he is going to shaft us again big tine. Like I said yesterday, we will be looking for yet another new manager before too long. The club is a fucking disgrace, taking the piss year after year! There is not an ounce of confidence and positivity in me any longer.

    1. Badger123 avatar

I have to admit I can’t see past Lerner refusing to spend.
I really hope he proves me wrong.

I’m usually optimistic but we just don’t feel like an attractive destination for good players right now.

  5. Lets face it….many on here saying Cleverley is shit……if we take that stance what does it say about us? It says that Sherwood cant even sign a ‘shit player’ that he wanted on a free! So its now ‘cheap, hungry and not quite good enough to be called shit just yet’ route. FFS Randy piss off…sack all the fucking players and get 20 young lads out of Aston Park! Sherwood has got no chance of success just like Lambert and McLeish before him! Do yourself a favour Tim before you get relegation on your CV in your first managerial job!

Not defending anyone here but Cleverley implied it wasn’t all about the money a few weeks ago when he was bumming Tim Sherwood and the club – he never wanted to come here, we’ve resurrected his reputation to a certain extent and his England career, and now he’s moved closer to home – I’m not sure there was much we could do to keep him.

My worry is that even if tight arse Randy opens his purse more than he has done recently it just won’t be enough as onlookers see us as a club in disarray. I think Sherwood might be the kind of man to tell Randy to fuck off of he’s not backed.

      Has Vlaar gone yet?

“I think Sherwood might be the kind of man to tell Randy to fuck off of he’s not backed.”

        Agreed Kent.
Imagine that scenario come the winter window.
        It’s a worrying thought.
But in fairness, as has been said, there’s plenty of time for Lerner to prove us wrong.

Nothing to do with us bring shit the club he joined are going nowhere fast! I think it’s purely location and he’s worked with Martinez before. We d had a lucky escape imo

  6. Do you want the truth?, no descent sponsor will come ,boxes won’t be taken, fans will hold back on buying seats, shirts will suffer on sales, staff will have be cut, he better start thinking its time to buy, because I will not take our 4 seats till they commit to us fans, just tell us what happening at Villa.

    1. Badger123 avatar
      Badger123

      That’s a good point Bill.
Who’s going to sponsor us while a sale is in the air?
If it’s any decent company offering a decent sponsorship, surely they’d be expecting a serious sign of intent? Or at least a sign that they won’t be backing a near cert for relegation?

I don’t know, but the feelgood factor is fading rapidly.

    2. Sir Earl Barrett avatar
      Sir Earl Barrett

Truth? You need a dictionary mate because that sounds like a list of your opinions Bill. No decent sponsor will touch us? When have we ever had a ‘massive’ sponsor? Even when we were the kings of Europe we had a local brewery on our tops. The boxes sold under mcclueless and dour lambert so why wouldn’t they this season? I’ve been and bought a season ticket for the first time since MON left and I there were plenty down there doing the same. If sherwood wanted cleverly so much, why did he go on holiday? He was always going to pick Everton no matter what the brum Mail reported. The cup final was a bitter, bitter disappointment but we’ve got to look forward now. If we haven’t signed any decent quality by the first game, I’ll start to worry but we’ve got two months.

      1. You maybe right Earl, on the sponsors, did you see any standing in the queue then when purchasing your tickets, carry on Earl I did for 65 years, but as they say I’m seeing the light, yes still two months to go but for them to practically black mail me by saying get your tickets now or we will sell them, ERM no show me what you going to do and don’t serve shite football. Carry on wish you luck Earl. by the way did you go last week and be humiliated?

        1. Sir Earl Barrett avatar
          Sir Earl Barrett

I did go Bill but it was the useless eleven on the pitch that was humiliated, not the 30k who sung their hearts out!! Like many, I said I’d go back once lambert had gone and I saw some great football. I took my kids to the Sunderland game away and it was some of the most attacking football I’ve seen in my 40 years. Benteke needs to make his mind up and quick so we can move on. You’re kidding yourself if you think you won’t be down there again next season Bill!!!

          1. Agree Earl, kidding myself, but I’ll make them wait like last year, they rang up and I spoke my mind, like to think I got Faulkner the boot ☝ but hat off to you on Sunderland game having a job to explain to grandkids what’s going on at Villa. Earl off abroad soon even spent on new gear to don in other countries and I will with pride.

  7. Ha ha ha..So Cleverley chooses Everton and it’s the end of the world at VP…Get a grip, he is shit. Tim, backed by Lerners millions will make us a force to be reckoned with………………Ok on a serious note if Sherwood isn’t backed in the transfer window I think he SHOULD walk.

    1. B6.. Must you repeat everything I say? I do understand why you do it though….its because I’m ‘always right’…welcome to my fan club :)…. now fuck off and find something original to say 🙂

man utd players very rarely mount to much once they leave old trafford god and maybe howard yes look at oshea brown bardsley
think sherwood knows what he wants and will have the balls to walk quick if things don t go the way they where promised when he took over didn t see many good managers beating down lerners door for job

Don’t think we’ll miss him that much. Showed his true colours in the final.

  10. Andrew avatar

A load of whining, not surprising. An Everton fan told me he believes Cleverley signed a deal in January to join them, which wouldn’t surprise me, we did have Lambert. Cleverley praised Sherwood but never insinuated he’d join us. Don’t get at all how us not getting Cleverley shows at all how we’ll do in the window. A joke at best.

    1. He would only be allowed to talk to foreign clubs in jan, I believe?!
Don’t believe he will be a great lose, although i would of been happy if he had signed!
      We move on!!

      1. Andrew avatar

True, but I think an agreement was probably there. I’d have liked to see him stay but he’s gone, Gardner gets a better chance, we have 4 CM’s still. We find another one. Easy as that. Doesn’t mean anything or prove anything about the summer.

        1. Ardent Villain avatar
          Ardent Villain

          Agreed Andrew.

Big fuss being made over departure of a player that everyone wanted rid just a few weeks ago.
He was at VP on loan for a season and managed maybe three good games before disappearing again. Won’t be missed.

And It says absolutely nothing about what Sherwood and/or Lerner will be doing over the next two months…

          1. Andrew avatar

Exactly. We don’t know if or if not a contract was even offered. Media claimed for months Vlaar was getting a new contract, yet he hasn’t been. We don’t know what Sherwood’s plans are or what he’s thinking or anything. This is his first summer transfer window ever. We know who he liked at Villa to keep us up, he now may want rid of every player he played. Who knows? We don’t.

    2. Question Andrew, why did Sherwood give him a Wembley? Knowing he had signed in January.

      1. Andrew avatar

Because he doesn’t want Sanchez? I mean it’s not like we have depth. He was also in pretty decent form, he wasn’t changing his tactics for the last game of the season. etc, etc.

  11. Tekkers48 avatar
    Tekkers48

Spot on Andrew. I think Sherwood bigged up the players at his disposal to get us over the line. Once the cup final was over he told a lot of them to fuck off they are not now needed. He had the balls to throw Grealish in at the deep end. I recon he will do the same with Gardner and Gill next season. I read somewhere that he wanted to get players that would allow him to play different styles to suit some of the current players that were not getting game time. I assumed he mentioned Gil but could be wide of the mark on that one.

    1. Andrew avatar

Gil largely makes sense in that one, only real player who didn’t get a chance. Everyone else got to show Sherwood what he was made of. He himself confirmed when he joined we weren’t going to see his true tactics, just ones he figured would keep us up, and they did. I’m for one really excited to see the style Sherwood wants to play and who we get.

      1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
        OohAhPaulMcGrath

Rubbish what’s the excuse of his tactics for saints and arsenal

        1. Andrew avatar

Did you listen to his post match? He said himself that he picked the tactics he thought would be best against Arsenal, the team wasn’t good enough. Simple as that. An Arsenal in that kind of form is going to kill us 99 out of 100 times, that’s just how it works.

    2. Ardent Villain avatar
      Ardent Villain

      Agreed again.
I read the article [think it was in the B’ham Mai, about a week ago]] and while it didn’t mention any names, there was the definite suggestion that Sherwood wants several alternative formations from which to choose, presumably depending on what style of opposition we’re facing; that implied that a few of those players who haven’t featured in many games so far will be found new roles next season.

    3. domingo avatar

gil is meant to be in talks with celta vigo. talksport reported it about 3pm today. not saying its true but i think if sherwood wanted to try him out the last game of the season would have been a start and he didn’t even get on the bench.

      1. Andrew avatar

Be a good club for him, just outside of a Europa League spot, could possibly make it there if they make signings like Gil.

        1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar

            Sir Earl Barrett

Gil is turning into Gary Gardner, he’s getting better the longer he’s out of the team! I watched Gil against Stoke at home and if I was at a racecourse they would’ve brought the screen on and put him out of his misery, he was shit. That’s not to say he won’t be a world beater given the chance but the way the fans are going on about him it’s as if he’s already got nothing to prove. None of us know what goes on at BMH and he might be a right wanker.

I’d definitely take Townsend – he’s better than anyone we’ve got at the moment.

          1. Andrew avatar

Is that good enough though? Sherwood himself said he does 1 thing right out of every 10 tries. Don’t think just being better than N’Zogbia and Sinclair is a reason to sign players, it’s really not that hard to get better than Championship players at best.

  13. Everton was his preference from the off not that sorry to see him gone maybe we got a handful of games out of him.I can’t see us having alot of action in the transfers market maybe a tweek here & there.not looking forward to next season one bit we’re fucked as far as I’m concerned

  14. Dave67 avatar

Stay positive lads , let’s see what happens during the summer. As for Cleverly he was never going to stay he moved closer to home. Benteke saga is going to be interesting. We could be all suicidal next week when Benteke up for sale and his transfer funds is the only money we have. Keep the faith

I don’t mind that Cleverley has gone to Everton. I guess he has a home in the Manchester area and will be able to commute easily. He came good for a few key moments that contributed greatly to our Prem survival, so thanks to him for that. He may have been mediocre for a large part of the season, but that is true for the rest, and largely down to Lambert. Good luck to him.

Does it mean we can’t attract decent players? Players want to play for teams with a chance of winning something, or simply for the biggest pay packet. At the moment we fail on both counts. We aren’t going to attract a stellar signing, so there is no point even dreaming that. We need strengthening across the park, and most of us agree on that. Sherwood needs to identify players like Trippier or Robertson, both of whom have been mentioned. The clever trick would be to buy them before they prove their worth in the Prem, as both of those have seen their value increase dramatically since the start of last season. The rise of Ings and Austin shows that these players are around in the Championship. Austin would be a great addition, regardless of whether Benteke stays or goes. The only issue would be that they probably couldn’t play in the same team.

It’s a bit early to panic, but it’s not that simple an exercise. To bring in 5/6 players means the same number have to leave. Not many of our current squad are in demand.

  16. What a gullible lot you are. It doesnt matter whether you think Cleverley is shit or the new Messi…..FFS, wake up as that is NOT the point. The point IS that Sherwood wanted him badly and Randy clearly would not pay his salary…..thats the relevant point here! Its NOT what you think about Cleverley but the obvious fact that Randy will continue his penny-pinching until we get sold…..the club is dieing a very slow and painful death!
Fuck off Lerner, the Villa is OURS!

    1. OohAhPaulMcGrath avatar
      OohAhPaulMcGrath

Normally I’d agree with Langford but on this occasion I don’t think your right. If u think about it he didn’t leave us for a sky 4 team paying top dollar he left us for Everton who would not pay huge wages themselves. I honestly think on this occasion it was purely geographical reason and that he wanted to play for Martinez. Either way it’s no loss for us glad he’s gone.

i think the problem is we wont get rid of even half the dead wood. but iv had an idea . we set up a tour of Iraq and Afghanistan and hopefully we can loose a few of the donkeys on it. maybe tell the lads they are having a players day parachuting and drop them into isis controlled Syria . that should get rid of a few more. then claim the insurance . just make sure we have them insured to the hilt and sherwood has a transfer war chest.
    jobs a good un.

An interesting topic on Twitter, should we just sell Benteke as soon as someone bids close to the buy-out clause rather than hold out for the money? By the time we get it all the best replacements (like Austin) could already be gone to some other club.

    1. domingo avatar
      domingo

randy will hold out for top dollar . he doesn’t care if all the best players are gone.

    2. Andrew avatar

I don’t think it’ll take long to get his buyout clause when you have Chelsea and United after him who aren’t afraid to just pay up that kind of money for the “in-form” player.

  19. steve avatar

If I remember right Cleverley was at Villa on January transfer deadline day, everton made contact and he couldn’t get to Everton fast enough only for them to try and stiff Utd on the deal. Utd refused which left Cleverley with no where to go. Hence he came back to Villa with his tail between his legs and Lambert instead of telling him where to go welcomed him with open arms.
Cleverley always wanted to go to Everton and there was nothing Villa nor Sherwood could do about. To be honest I don’t care just move on.
As for Benteke he is too good for us and if I was him I would move for the biggest deal I could get.
Vlaar is so over rated I can’t believe it. Compare him to the likes Melberg, Laursen, McGrath and many more – and he is not a patch on them. Vlaar should just go. I am very disappointed – if its true – that villa have offered him a new deal.

  20. steve avatar

One more thing on Vlaar – There is a good chance he will be injured for Hollands international this week. Nothing new there.

Also a few weeks ago – it was all over the place that the club had been SOLD for £150 million if we stayed up and a much lesser fee (unknown) if we were relegated.
Presumably this was another FACT that has proven to be just bollocks.

  21. Steve…you are also completely missing the point….its NOT about Cleverley!……see above! Not sure how many times I have to explain this but will try again….It IS about Sherwood badly wanting him and Randy not paying the salary. Now if Randy wont pay that for an England international (whether you rate him or not does not matter), it suggests that we will only pay peanuts again…..thats the point!….we will get shit again. Do you really believe that any decent player will look at that and see a club with fuck all ambition? We wont/cant buy any decent players whilst Randy is at the helm.

Fuck off Lerner, the Villa is OURS!

    1. steve avatar

I know where you are coming from and it is crap but the point I am making particularly in reference to the SALE of the club is that none of us know what is going.
e.g Sherwood says he wants to sign Cleverley. Cleverley says ok but I want £50K a week a five year deal and a signing on fee of X. Sherwood says for that sort of money I will look elsewhere thank you.
Benteke was Gone 2 years ago – stayed. Barry was going to Liverpool – stayed for a year went to Man City. OGS was our Manager – Lambert came
We’ve sold the club we haven’t.
Lerner came threw a fortune at this club got his fingers burnt and now wants out = mess – I agree with you he needs to go now if his heart is not in it. But how easy is it to find somebody to come in and throw another load of money at us. Everton and Newcastle have been up for sale a lot longer than us

    2. Are you on the villa board ? Are you cleverley s agent ? No. All just guess work.

    3. Andrew avatar

This is based on what? Sherwood’s joke that if Cleverley didn’t sign he wasn’t going to play in the final? There’s not an ounce of proof that Sherwood wanted Cleverley “badly” to sign for Villa. Not a single one. A contract could’ve been offered but there’s no proof on that either. When Everton first got linked and the day he signed, they were the only team that offered him a contract if we even pay attention to the media. Arsenal and Southampton also showed interest, but no one else offered him anything.

Why would Villa pay Cleverley 50k wages to begin with?

      1. Andrew…you havent got a sccoby doo, have you?…..its based on a LIVE interview with Sherwood saying ‘how badly’ we want to sign him….thats fact. Stop making stuff up as you go along! All the shit you come out with is ‘pure guess work’

        1. Andrew avatar

He laughed off claiming he wasn’t going to play him if he didn’t sign. That’s what he said. That’s not made up guess work, that is FACT. Simple as. Nothing I’ve said is made up.

          1. FFS….Google it! There is a Sky Sports News Video and its repeated at least 30, yes 30 times on different websites all over the net….I repeat you guess and make shit up….FFS google it! Either that or it was someone impersonating Sherwood! Your Cup Final quote IS/WAS a joke….the interview IS factual! FFS google it…..p.s. Are you a politician as you seem to love to spin the truth! 🙂

          2. Andrew avatar

Comprehension mate, think you need to learn it. Never did he say he wanted him badly.

“He said: “I want the club to talk to his representatives and I want him to stay at Villa.”
Wanting him to stay and wanting him badly are two different things. I just googled it on a Sky Sports video. He said they would see if it’s right for both parties, it’s more important for Villa to stay up. He wouldn’t want to join a Championship side. Never once did he say “I want him badly”. So again, I’m not the one making ANYTHING up in this argument, definitely seems like you are.
Unless of course this isn’t the one you were talking about.
            http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11677/9834984/tim-sherwood-keen-on-keeping-tom-cleverley

          3. I see you’ve been proved right again Langford….NOT!!! ha ha ha ha ha

          4. Andrew avatar

Just shocking too be honest, especially because I’m supposedly the one twisting things, using exactly what Sherwood said instead of interpreting them like he is. LOL

          5. ✊✌✋☝

          6. Andrew avatar

Haha Oohah, I have no problems. I just find it interesting I can back up what I say and I’m apparently the pathetic one for doing so.

  22. The problem is…ALL the half decent players will know the very low wage cap that Villa operate under. That means most of the available players that we need to progress will not even get to the negotiating stage! Herein lies our problem! We have to up our wage cap or stick with the same problem that we’ve now had for 4 years! It looks to me like we are going with the latter, and that spells danger!

    1. So your pedantic as well as pathetic….I was NOT quoting the actual words (I leave the making up and guesswork to you)! but interpreting them….you probably cant distinguish the difference!

      1. Andrew avatar

So you are making things up with your “interpretations”. He didn’t even say he wanted him 30 times, he said maybe once that if it’s good for both parties he’d want him. You are again overreacting trying to belittle a club you supposedly support and can’t even get “facts” correct.

  23. My God it didn’t take long for the doom and gloom mongers to get going again.

Problem is that all of the above is written by people who have absolutely no idea what’s actually going on at VP.

I’m going to stay optimistic and hope that, if Villa is sold that we’ll get a good owner who’ll stump up some money and if not then Lerner will at least allow Tim some cash from the TV rights and Benteke’s possible sale to rebuild the team. Hopefully Tim also has an idea of who he wants.

If, at the start of the season, none of this happens I might start worrying but not before then

What’s the point of spoiling a nice summer 🙂

    UTV

    1. Pat I used to be one of the positive posse on here, but now I just ain’t getting it.

  24. Austin will be another missed opportunity with the barcodes & spuds being more attractable financially,we simply can’t compete with imo any other premier league teams as we pay piss weak salaries in today’s game.onwards & downwards.

  25. Just looked at Bournemouth’s team and the most they spent on a player was £500,000. Now I know they’re Championship but I think they might do okay this season.

To me it’s not all about money. We know Tim favours young players anyway. It’s more about how they play as a team and whether they play with a bit of passion. I’d sooner see a group of youngsters in this season so that in a few years time we might really have a competitive team.

Although didn’t someone once say that ‘You’ll never win anything with kids’ 🙂
