Capital One Cup Preview

So this week sees us in cup action as we welcome Leyton Orient to Villa Park for the Capital One cup second round.

This is a competition i personally look forward to and feel it is our best chance of winning something which is probably what 15 of the other premier league teams think too!!

There is some good memories to be had when it comes to Villa and the league cup. Who can forget the 2 legged semi-final against Tranmere Rovers and more recent was the breathtaking 6-4 win against Blackburn. There is some bad memories too but i’ll leave them for somebody else to mention.

So our opponents, Leyton Orient. Promoted from league two last season and already they are showing they are a tough nut to crack in league one. They’ve had some decent results including a fine 3-1 win at Oldham. They will come to Villa Park full of confidence having not been beaten since the first day of the season, a 2-1 home defeat to Chesterfield. They beat Plymouth Argyle at Home Park 6-5 on penalties, after drawing 3-3 to progress to round two of the competition

I’m hoping we give some fringe players a run out including Okore, Cole and Bent who can hopefully give Lambert something to think about for the weekend game.

Despite us going out the past two seasons to lower league teams in the cup competitions i feel we have more experience in our team as well as more quality. Providing we go into the game not underestimating our opponents our quality will shine through and i predict a comfortable win.

Prediction.

Darren Bent first goal and Villa to win 4-1 pays 40/1.

  1. Actually think Cleverly could be pretty decent for us. However the question is,is how do we play?

Sanchez is our only DM, so arguably needs to be playing. So he partners who? Delph? Cleverly? Westwood? Or do we solely play Sanchez at home and play a CM then an AM? Play Delph and Cleverly away? So many choices if he comes now. To play 2 in midfield or 3?

    1. Although 8m is a lot for him. Especially when at least 1 winger is much needed before him.

      1. This Cleverley deal is gathering pace with Sky reporting that a fee has been agreed.
        I despair, I really do.

        1. Cleverly for 8m, Xabi Alonso for 5m. While you can’t compare prices, this is how pathetic average English players are going for.

  2. Hearing from my sources there is nothing in the Cleverley rumours. I repeat there is NOTHING in the Cleverley rumour

  3. The cleverly rumours gathering pace I hope it’s true think he would be a good addition to our squad 8 million bit steep but he can be a class player on his day

  4. Think the big thing it shows is either Lerner’s willing to spend, as I’d doubt we’d bid for Cleverly if we only had 8m to spend. So it shows we have money which is positive.

      1. Hope so, As long as a winger and AM come in of some quality and we’re not largely wasting money on another CM only.

    1. Lets hope this one goes through, although have Manure leaked the story to get more interest …!

  5. We are hearing that Manchester United have agreed a deal with Aston Villa for Tom Cleverley. A fee of £8million has been mooted for the England international.

    1. Don’t know if anybody has mentioned it but I am hearing we have had an £8m bid accepted for Tom Cleverley.

    1. Nah, they want rid of him and a few other players. We’re just one of the few who want Cleverly. Don’t see the two having anything to do with each other.

  6. Can’t get my head round this deal.. esp at 8M..

I thought we were skint or the budget was very tight..

Of course if we still have the equivalent amount left over for a winger and a No.10 then fair enuff.. even then he would not be my choice to spend that much on..

I have a feeling it will be a midfield three of Delph him and Sanchez.. Sanchez doesn’t score goals.. delph the odd one and Cleverley has THREE in his Man U career..

Begs the question why someone like Barry wasn’t a priority and leads onto what sort of strategy are we working on..!

  7. This was the only way any newspaper summing up our transfer dealings could write
“LAMBERT BOUGHT CLEVERLY IN THE TRANSFER WINDOW.

  8. If you scroll to the bottom of this link you will see, written in Red, a warning which our manager has totally disregarded – if true he is punting £8M on one of the main reasons UTD are out of Europe and on the slide.

  9. Anyone else heard that we have app had an 8 million pound offer for Tom Cleverley accepted?

          1. Yeah she said we were low on milk so that makes sense.

Tom…not one of my favourite names but still really interesting stuff. I am surprised no one on this site had heard the rumour because it’s normally very informative regarding itk.

Don’t forget you need to tidy your room before Saturday son, your aunt Hilda is coming.

    1. BREAKING – Aston Villa agree an £8M fee with Manchester United for Tom Cleverley.

Apparently Manchester United will pay it in installments.

  10. I think this is the best ever Villa side in living memory. Our Manager is really on the ball and a stunner in the transfer market. Top six easily, and on a budget to boot.
WE WILL NOT BE RELEGATED, WE WILL WIN THE LEAGUE IN THE NEXT 3 YEARS, EVEN WITH RANDOLPH AS OUR GUIDE! BECAUSE WE ARE THE VILLA! AND WE WEAR PURPLE AND INDIGO UNDERPANTS ON OUR HEAD!
I’m off for my distemper injections now. Back later lads!
WE WILL NOT BE RELEGATED. DID YOU HEAR ME!!!!!!! AAAAAAGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!! KA-BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Steven N’zonzi who Joe Kinnear would call ‘insomnia’ if he managed him would be a good midfield signing as he wants out of Stoke. Morgan Amalfitano available on a free transfer from Marseille who did well on loan at the ‘Balti-King Baggies’ last season would also do a job in the midfield.

    1. Yea I think we could Giddy.
Can’t help but think that Roy Keane is heavily influencing this Cleverley move.
