Brighton – Villa; Carabou cup, I nearly forgot.

I wrote about this when we played Crewe in the previous round, but it says it all when you have to be reminded that we have a game tomorrow.
Other web sites were talking about Brighton and I was wondering what they were on about until it clicked.

Does this game matter in the slightest?
I guess many would say not, but I actually think it does, particularly now, where it’ll probably prove very handy in giving players valuable playing time. I’d like to win it too, for what it’s worth.

I fully expect Smith to change things up as much as he possibly can , so he and us fans can get a look at what sort of shape the rest of the squad are in.
There’s a big incentive too, I’d suggest, as I’m guessing places in the first team will be up for grabs over the next few Prem games, as Smith tweaks things.
Fortunately, Brighton are in a fairly similar position to us. They won’t care too much about this game, although they’d obviously like to win it and I’ve no doubt they’ll get as many of their players in too.
I’ve always said I don’t like mass changes for cup games, but for this one, it won’t affect much on either side, so I won’t mind.

It’s a good time to be facing Brighton, as you’d expect they’ll give us a tough test, which is exactly what we need and is probably better than facing the likes of Colchester, where maybe we wouldn’t learn as much.

As it happens, I’ve just heard Colchester have knocked out Spurs via penalties. It is indeed a funny old game.

I’m going for a 1-1 at full time.
And then of course, anything can happen

  1. I’d expect to see the likes of Hourihane and Lansbury start, along with Davis.
I wonder if we’ll see Targett at all?

  2. It’s an ideal game for Targett to get some match time and fitness so if he’s not included then Benno’s recent questions become even more relevant.

I actually think it’s essential that we get a result from this game to lift the fans and the team for the game against Burnley on Saturday. We also have to prove to ourselves that we can win away from home against Premier League opposition.

Can’t follow the game as I’ll be on a big bird tonight winging my way southwards.

  3. Game should not be treated as a throw away fixture. I would rest Mings, Heaton, Grealish, McGinn and Wesley as definites but all others I would have as possible starters. We need a win for confidence more than anything. Another defeat and we will face an uphill task against Burnley.

  4. first off i hope we win the game tonight, i seen loads say couldn’t care less about this game. but if smith uses his squad like against crewe, there is no harm in progressing. these players need a run out and we need them to have the run out, so they are fit&ready if they are called upon in the league.

i never moaned about referee on sunday. but i never got to see the replays of the encroaching on the pen, the guys who were in the wall on the free kick, also the handball. hitch mentioned at the start of the season. var being not accurate and i agree then and i have to say that he was proven spot on. var has not stopped villa get fooked over by corrupt referees, var can spot a tight offside, when your big toes offside / also if that benefit a paid member of the elite clubs 2date. but can’t spot glaring mistakes, like those on sunday and dare we venture into the other 5 games.we have more examples of var not working for all the clubs . breathe god damn it lol iam now ready for tonight’s game.

  5. we picked a good team, mcGinn and Trezeguet only two who played sunday. i was impressed with Trezeguet he looks to be finding his feet in england.

  6. 12 Jed Steer
27 Ahmed Eissa El Mohamady Abdel Fattah
    30 Kortney Hause
    18 Matt Targett
    15 Ezri Konsa Ngoyo
6 Douglas Luiz Soares de Paulo
    14 Conor Hourihane
    7 John McGinn
    17 Mahmoud Ibrahim Hassan
    39 Keinan Davis
    23 José Ignacio Peleteiro Ramallo

    12 27 30 18 15 6 14 7 17 39 23
    Substitutes

10 Jack Grealish 25 Ørjan Nyland 41 Jacob Ramsey 24 Frederic Guilbert 21 Anwar El Ghazi 40 Tyrone Mings 9 Wesley Moraes Ferreira da Silva

Interestingly, the OS shows this as a 4-4-2

    JOTA scores, 1-0

    Who’s Mahmoud Ibrahim Hassan ?

  7. Seen the both goals and its looking good for Villa. Co nor Hourihane took a nice shot at goal. Villa 2 up.

Really sad news that Dr Barrie Smith Villa’s
club doctor for more than 30 years has died. Interviewed Barrie many times during my days on Birmingham Mail about how he used to patch Paul McGrath’s knees up to ensure the big man kept playing
Still saw him in Trinity stand most home games
      RIP to an absolute legend
I remember him well RIP Barie.

  8. Wolves at home and apart from Burton v Leicester…all ties are either Prem teams playing each other or lower teams playing each other

    1. So if we can get past Wolves, good chance of a lower team in the next round and more progress!

  9. Nice to open my iPad after 11 hours on a plane to see a good win for us. Did anyone see the game?

We just got to our hotel and they’ve only gone and put us in the Presidential Suite – you have to laugh – could get half the Holte in here 🙂 only downside is we’re only here one night!

  10. Just watched the extended highlights of Wednesdays match and it looks like the supposedly second-string played very well!

    1. BFR, would you include any of the players such as Hourihane and Targett for Saturdays game? Also not sure why Lansbury wasn’t in the squad against Brighton. Assume that he was injured (again)

  11. Lansbury was injured, apparently.

I saw something on Twitter about Conor’s body-language after the mach; apparently, he was very downbeat. The fact is he was in the team that got promotion, and we were 1-0 up at Spurs when he was subbed for Luiz. So you could argue it’s been down-hill since then. In other words, he didn’t deserve to lose his spot and offers plenty to the team, not least from set-pieces. Targett also looked busy in the final third on Wednesday, so at home, he’d be worth a start if Smith wants us to start on the front-foot, which he should.

So yeh, I would give both Conor and Targett (assuming his match-fit for PL) an start tomorrow…still fancy the 3,4,3 with Targett on the left side of midfield! Then it’s one from Conor, Luiz, or Marvellous in the middle with McGinn. Ain’t gonna happen though.
