Brighton 1 – 1 Villa; We deserved that one

Well, I’ve called another one correctly for once and while I’m happy with that point, I’m also disappointed as I think we should have won that.

We had the best of the play overall, created the best chances and the proof of the pudding is that Gollini had very little to do overall.

When we play poorly, it’s easy to point fingers, but I’m seriously struggling to criticise anyone after that.

Westwood even played well and actually tried to move the ball forward quickly.
What a refreshing change is to say that, as although I’ve been one of his biggest detractors, so I’ve never wanted him to actually fail for us.
I’m still not convinced he’s good enough, but tonight he tried to move us forward, which is what any Villa Mid should do.

And then it’s hard to slate anyone, as although the first half was tight, I thought we edged it.
The second half, we ruled even more.

The belief is there now and my opinion says it’s now because we quite simply have a decent manager, who knows this level like the back of his hand.

The fact that I’m somewhat disappointed that we’ve lost this one says it all.
We have no reason to fear ANYBODY in this league and I now fully expect us to make a serious charge for automatic promotion.

Consider Bruce hasn’t got a player in yet and that’s not such a daft statement.

    I actually think there could be some legs on this one;

    http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/abel-hernandez-ready-to-quit-hull-city-for-aston-villa-say-reports/story-29919383-detail/story.html

Shows we still have a strong pull as a club.

Badger reports have suggested Villa were interested in the summer but his agents wanted stupid money and, quite rightly, Dr. T said no thanks.

For him to move in January he will have to substantially change his expectations so I’m not holding my breath and, I suspect, we will have to ship a striker out – Gestede?

I think we’ve got too many strikers we need midfielders

  2. badger123 avatar

True. Although if the player digs his heels in, things could be more favourable.
There’s also the fact that Bruce might specifically want him too.

And yes, probably Gestede or maybe McCormack if he doesn’t show something.

I still think it’s Gabby’s last chance and if he doesn’t come good, I can see him going too. Moving him on would be difficult though.

  3. Just finished watching Leeds v Newcastle, an 0-2 away win.

Yet not impressed by either team. Newcastle rode their luck getting a gift goal courtesy of one of the worst bits of goalkeeping you’ll see from Rob Green. Second goal was just a piece of very poor defending by Leeds.

Newcastle looked jumpy and more than a bit fragile at the back while Leeds were just plain ineffectual.

We should fear neither of these two teams in my opinion.

  4. Pat so did I and thought the very same, nothing to worry about with that performance.

  5. badger123 avatar

Doesn’t matter as long as they keep digging out the wins and thats 8 out of 8.
I can’t see us getting above them or even catching them now (2nd is a different matter).
Encouraging though, as if they didn’t look much cop, that means we can beat them.

Does anyone know if Calderwood has officially come to us yet or not?

  7. badger123 avatar

The club hasn’t officially announced it, but yes, he’s ours.

  8. Aston Villa is delighted to announce the appointment of Colin Calderwood as assistant manager.

Calderwood joins Stephen Clemence and Gary Walsh on Steve Bruce’s backroom staff.

The former Villa defender, 51, arrives from Brighton, where he spent just under two years as No.2 to Chris Hughton.

Bruce said: “I’m delighted to bring Colin to the football club.

When I heard Colin was interested he shot to the top of the pile
    Steve Bruce
“We’ve got an experienced guy and a good football man. It was important for me to get someone of his nous.
“When I heard Colin was interested he shot to the top of the pile. We interviewed two or three people. But once I knew Colin was available there was only one person I wanted here.”

Director of Football Steve Round added: “We are delighted to secure the services of Colin.

“He is an excellent coach and an outstanding person.

“He has a wealth of experience at the highest level and will be a great addition to our management team.”

    1. Looks like Steve Round is earning his money.

Another ex-Villa player has come home, welcome Colin!

  9. Might be Pat that they are looking for dedication in the club.

Explains Tshobola’s absence. I’d completely forgotten about Kojak too!!!!

Currently watching the U-23s on FB, after accidentally landing there.
Can anyone confirm this is available on AVTV, before I make a complaint?
As I looked and couldn’t find it.

    Great bit of commentary there;

“He’ll look for a fellow Canary and found one in Crow” 🙂

  14. badger123 avatar

    1-2 🙁

I can’t say anyone stood out footy-wise, but it seemed the Norwich lads are decidedly bigger than ours?

Great line in Brum Mail blog when referring to Villa and promotion ‘do you want to bet against us’ Shades of Sir Ron’s great quote.

The force is with us UTV

  16. Badger123 avatar

That’s how I see it Hitch.
Proper manager now, so anything’s possible, imo.

  17. am i right in reading we have only moved up the table one place under bruce, we were 17th when bruce took over up to giddy heights of 16th now

    1. badger123 avatar

      Don’t worry about that.
We were 17th afer a few games played and looking shite, simple.
As opposed to now, where a few more games in, we’re still a similar points difference apart.
      Quite simply, we’ve improved massively.

Just look at the gap that was there, from us and the top few, a while back.

    2. Hitchens 60 avatar
      Hitchens 60

      And your point is JV?

    3. That’s the problem with this league a team could win 3 in a row and only move up the table a small bit. Bruce has steadied the ship and there are major improvement s to the team. Utv.

  18. My worry is our mental ability to not go on and take games by the scruff of the neck. Must be about 8? Games this season we were winning and haven’t won. Why can we never get 2-0 up? I can’t put my finger on it?

    1. Not that long ago we were regularly losing games in the last minutes so a vast improvement.

I have no doubt that it will come especially once SB is able to bring in some of the players he needs in January

  19. If Bruce brough in Lionel Messi, he’d still look like Lionel Messi. Where as before he’d have looked like Lionel Blair.
    p.s. Come on Leicester!

    1. badger123 avatar

      lol

  20. Congrats to Leicester! Into the last 16 that’s an achievement on your first go. I think they might surprise a few more teams before they’re finished.

That will be us in four years or so (and no I haven’t had a drink!)

  21. badger123 avatar

    Yes, well done Leicester!

I’ve just seen Borrussia Dortmund 8 – 4 Legia Warsaw as a result.
What a game that must have been!

    1. My prediction for Saturday us being the winners anythings possible so can’t be laffed at.

  22. badger123 avatar

    Possible striker swap/deal?
    It might suit the books for both clubs;

    http://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2016/11/23/report-hull-city-want-to-sign-aston-villa-striker-rudy-gestede-s/

    1. I’d definitely go for a swap (plus cash I’d expect). Hernandez and Kodjia working together up front would be something indeed.

Where would that leave McCormack though? With Hernandez on board I can’t see where he’d fit in and I’m sure he wouldn’t settle for warming a bench.

      1. badger123 avatar

        That’s the thing isn’t it?
I don’t see where McCormack fits in at all in our squad, unless you play him straight off Kodjia up front. Or maybe Gestede, who I’ve previously said gives us an option (albeit not the one I like) if we want to play a longer game.
If you play him, it means you can’t play Grealish and/or Ayew, who I think might be better bets.

The only plus for me is that as it stands McCormack will be available during the African nations thing (and he’s known as a late starter).
But you could say that about Gabby and he definitely isn’t our goalscoring solution, imo.

All in all, I suspect McCormack will prove a poor signing, but wtfdik?

        1. Just to compound things Villa are supposed to be after Ludogorets’ Brazilian winger Cafu.

          http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-transfer-rumour-champions-12221937?

I’ve got a feeling we might not be too short during the African Cup of Nations.

  23. Hernandez for Gestede and not getting Rhodes would be largely beneficial for us. Gestede just might fit Hull well enough and Hernandez has that all around ability, like Ayew, but a different player overall, that the team needs.

Cafu’s an interesting one as well. 10 goals and 6 assists so far this season. 4 goals and 4 assists coming in 11 Champions league games. Though most of his goal/assistss has come as playing as a center forward.

  24. Cafu??? 46????

    1. Hitchens 60 avatar
      Hitchens 60

Different Cafu Giddy! Great surname though – Barbosa 🙂

      1. Who’s he play for????

        1. Ludogorets – see his goal against Arsenal here –

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvA3BOpEwAw

On another topic BBC reports –

‘A sad end to former Everton, Manchester City and Aston Villa defender Joleon Lescott’s time at AEK Athens. His contract has been ended, just three months into his time in Greece.’

          I’m crying :-))

          1. Lol 😁. Breaks my heart

          2. Cheers never heard of the team

  25. Ps I thought he was a squash player
