That was a massively disappointing performance which leaves me wondering how we can come back now?
I can handle defeat if we’ve played ok or have been unlucky, but I struggle when we’ve played poorly and make no mistake about it, we did today. I’ll bet Dean Smith is fuming and rightly so.
I’m not sure if we got it tactically wrong or not, as there were so many poor performances that it was hard to tell.
When you have so many poor passes, it’s hard to tell what the team’s trying to do, but it often seemed that the idea was for Mings to hoof it long to Jack Grealish, possibly because the players didn’t trust our (lack of) midfield.
There was a stat that flashed up and it said our passing was actually more accurate than Bounemouth’s. I nearly fell off my chair when I saw it and it certainly didn’t seem like it.
And then there’s the fact that we lack creativity if you leave Grealish out of it.
He was head and shoulders our best player today, but even he can’t be relied on to carry a team through a whole game, although he did his best too.
The lack of movement was incredibly poor too, but what annoys me the most is that Bournemouth just looked much more up for it and did the basics right in pressuring us and working massively hard.
The good thing is that Samatta got his first goal, which was the first headed goal we’ve scored this season. I’m sure that tells me something, but I don’t know exactly what that is.
The goal apart, it was just depressing to see a team play so dysfunctionally and basically watch Grealish having to keep driving us forward. Where we’d be without him, I shudder to think and we’re in deep trouble as it is.
I’m off to drown my sorrows, as having to keep thinking about how poor we were is putting me on a proper downer.
We have an international break now and then it’s at home to Spurs on the 16th. Oh dear.
We’d better start getting some practice in, as it doesn’t seem like they’re doing much at Bodymoor Heath, does it?
If we continue to keep playing like that and let’s face it, we have been poor even during our recent victories, I currently see little chance of survival.
I really hope McGinn recovers quickly.

Forget Ellis.
We were struggling to keep the lights on at BMH if you believe the rumours and it’s why he had to sell out.
It’s not down to our current owners either, imo.
If the players aren’t good enough, it’s because we can’t spend the hundreds of millions that most top teams need.
It’s FFP and the rules, unless you get lucky, like Wolves, who basically skanked things.
Again, it is what it is.
The difference between us and Wolves is Jorge Mendes.
We’ve spent far more than they have, they just have a very good agent with very good contacts and players on his books.
We have done same old trick of buying all and sundry and hoping a few of them turn out to be gems, Suso needs shooting, he’s awful.
More to it than that, Guest, imo.
Champions league players, let’s not forget.
They bought above their weight and got away with it.
What’s the alternative?
Buy average players and get relegated or buy CL players whose value will still hold if we fail?
Fact is we both took a risk and Wolves has paid off.
Bent deals, Guest.
Only because of the agent though, you’re correct there.
Oh, as for Smith not signing the players, I thought that had become obvious by now?
I doubt he’d have signed Basto or whatever his name is, for a start.
Can’t get a start for Swansea and apparently on £50k a week, where we’ve taken over his wages???
For a backup player, who will never start?
Shocking signing and has “bung” written all over it, for me.
But of course, we don’t do brown paper bags in football anymore, do we?
The Baston deal is madness, I’d have rather we kept Hogan to be honest.
Hah, see below.
Are we unlucky or what?
Oh and now I’ve just read that Davis was taken off, hobbling, with what looked like another hamstring injury, for the U23s when Brunt clattered him.
After he’d just hit the stanchion.
Sounds very typical of him, as much as I like him.
He’ll never make it at top level.
Maybe that’s why we signed an unwanted Swansea striker?
I’d rather put Andre Green up top, than spend that money, myself. At least he’s quick.
And typical Villa luck – where injuries are concerned.
Andre Green up front is a great shout.
That’s terrible news if he done hamstring again looking like he out for season too,as took enough time off last time.got to hope that 9 more points are enough although that’s looking hard now.back to square one and rebuild properly in championship
Hopefully, it’s just a tweak.
And just to confirm, the team are going off for some warm weather training, although I’m not sure where.
Usually Spain.
Maybe they’ll turn up on a beach near you Badger and you can point Smith and Terry in the direction of your recently digested coaching manual 🙂 🙂
Heaven knows they need help from somewhere!
WTF was Smith thinking by playing Davis in a pointless U23’s game. We all know that he is injury prone so surely playing in 2 games in a few days was plain stupid. So it looks like we are down to 2 strikers now. Relegation here we come! Strange thing is I have become disinterested about Villa this season compared to last and speaking to other villains, I’m not alone. The premier league is unfortunately a case of the haves and the have nots. At least in the championship the gulf between top and bottom is hardly anything. Okay we might have a points reduction but we will have a parachute payment and huge fees for Grealish, McGinn and Mings to rebuild. Just don’t let Suso or Purslow get involved with future signings. #CHWC!
If we go down and have a FFP problem then we’ll have the same problem if we stay up! The reason being the cumulative losses stay the same – £65m over 3 years (2xEFL + 1xEPL). The EFL have transferred the issue over the stadium valuation to the EPL.
It was probably about improving his sharpness, imo, although I’ve seen a few comments suggesting similar to what you’re saying.
And tbf, u23’s are not usually rough games to be involved in.
Chris Brunt is a tough mother though.
Agreed, if Davis is crocked and we lose Samatta to an injury, things do look bleak.
Although, tbf, we did ok when we played without a striker.
Maybe that’s the secret?
I was reading about Baston earlier.
He’s scored 12 in his last 80 games, including Spain.
I still find it difficult to believe we signed him on £50k a week.
I can only assume Suso saw he has some good stats somewhere.
In other news, it’s being reported that spurs might terminate Victor Wanyama’s contract, so he’d be available on a free.
He’s rated at around £10 mill, so that doesn’t make sense to me and it makes me wonder what’s up with him?
But if he was fit, he’s just the sort we need, imo and would add some serious meat into our midfield.
Wages would be stupid, so it won’t happen, but it’s a thought?
Oh, as for being less interested in the Prem, I was thinking last night that I’m definitely not enjoying it as much as last season, as much as it had it’s ups and downs.
It’s not good watching your team struggle at anytime.
That said, if we were challenging for top six, I’m sure we’d both have different opinions 🙂
And unfortunately, it’s the only place to be, if the club’s going to seriously matter in the game.
Badger, you’re right of course. It’s a catch 22 that financially we need to become an established premier league team again. It’s a shame that the heart and soul has been ripped out of it. When I was younger, football even at the top flight was a working mans game. Now all the premier league teams care about are the corporates and the prawn sandwich brigade. I guess the arrival of Sky and the demise of standing terraces created the predicament we are in. I know a few Baggies fans who are enjoying this season and aren’t keen on promotion because they know it’s very likely they will be fighting relegation next season.
Mungo Bridge and Louis Barry. May as well get them on the bench and start giving them some game time.
Agreed BFR – we need a bold new strategy. As long as the fans don’t get on Smith’s back if it fails!
Shit, how could I forget it was Lerner who wouldn’t back MON?
Apologies for that one, but the rest still stands.
He deliberately broke up a European cup winning side, purely through ego, because he wasn’t involved at the time.
Yes, we had some good times.
But it should have been so much better and we should at least be equal to Arsenal and Spurs, even with the London factor taken out of it.
We’re by far the biggest club in the Midlands, after all.
My opinion says Ellis massively failed to keep up with what was going on generally, because of the “Mr Aston Villa” thing and it massively held us back.
But whatever, he no doubt splits opinions and is therefore Marmite.
Yes agree he ruined the league and European championship team as you said all because he wasn’t in charge at the time. And he did back his managers but held back from really going for it.shame he never built on the 82 team instead of breaking it up that was the chance to establish us as a top team.also the first year of the premier League he should have spent big but he always wanted to keep within budgets and not go into too much debt.i can’t see us being a top team in my lifetime unfortunately FFP spoilt that just to keep the top six at the top
Digby-Jones once said of Ellis – ‘he knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing’.
Digby Jones is a prize tw@t to be fair. If he said that about Doug it was probably the only time he has been right.
Hah!
I quite liked the idea of Digby-Jones.
Well known and speaks for the Midlands and all that.
Until I actually listened to what he says.
Yep, a prize twat, I agree.
