Barnsley – Villa; Penultimate chance saloon?

I’d have said last chance, but it seems the press are reporting that RDM might get the Preston game too and I suppose that’s fair enough.
It’s not that I want RDM gone for the sake of it. It’s just that I’m not convinced he’s the man to motivate the team in the way that’s required to get results.
Opinions seem divided though and if we don’t win tonight I think I’m going to run a poll in the next post.

Talking of managers, it seems Nigel Pearson might have been involved in another punch-up;

Well, it’s the only reason for a club suspension that I can think of anyway.

And Fat Sam has been caught talking about third party ownership, which could see him sacked too;

I’d take either of them over RDM, for what it’s worth.

Anyway, on to the game and Barnsley are without injured full-back Aidy White and Cole Kpekawa is likely to continue in his absence. Saidy Janko is out with a torn thigh muscle, while James Bree could feature after overcoming his hamstring problem.

On our side, Ross McCormack might be fit to return and Jack Grealish will probably be recalled.

So what to think?

Ian Holloway thinks our late show against Newcastle might have been a turning point and he actually predicts a Villa win.

Me, I’m not convinced and the first 70 minutes of that game disgusted me.

I’d go for another draw, but surely the odds are against that?

So a 1-0 win for us then.
And if we don’t get it, RDM is another step closer to the sack.

  1. Fwiw I think we might actually win tonight. I’m going for a double whammy – first away win in 24(?) attempts and first time we come from behind to win in 44 attempts so 1-2 Villa.

And to answer OohAh – yes I would take Big Sam over Pearson and RDM. Not only has he got a good track record of getting teams out of the Championship but then keeping them in the PL. I bet Bolton are still rueing the day they sacked him!

  2. bolton never sacked big sam, he resigned and went to newcastle, he wanted a club to match his ambitions he thought he took bolton as far as he could.

2 nil to villa tonight and hopefully a decent run to follow.

    1. Thanks Nath – honestly thought he’d been given the order of the boot. You learn something every day 🙂

      1. i can honestly say only reason i knew this was my sisters husband is a die hard bolton fan and he rues the day he left. he also rams jay jay okocha freekick in my face. its on his mobile the only goal they ever scored lmao you know the banana freekick one

  3. Pearson – the loose cannon goes-off again, it seems.

The guy will become unenployable very soon at this rate.

  4. While I agree with most of the frustration surrounding Villa at the moment the only way I can see RDM getting the sack is if we lose the next three games in a row – which I highly doubt.

The reality is if Villa win today (game 10) that would put the club around 14th in the league and exactly mid-table. Now I can’t speak for everyone, but at the start of this season (after the shambles of last season and the great upheaval of getting a new owner, new staff, and new squad) I think most fans would have been happy to be hovering around mid table after 10 games. Personally RDM hasn’t filled me with a lot of confidence, but hearing the options I’d rather stick with the devil you know and hope for improvement.

  5. Teamsheet: Gollini, Bacuna, Elphick, Chester, Cissokho, Adomah, Tshibola, Jedinak, Grealish, Kodjia, Ayew

  6. On paper it looks like a traditional 4-4-2, which is good and the players should know their roles. Not sure Tshibola can put in a full 90 mins yet, but it is good to see him start. Hopefully everyone stays fit and I look forward to a good game.

  7. Kodjia up front, with Grealish behind and Ayew and Adomah, left and right.
Barnsley sound sharp on the counter and this Kent bloke sounds dangerous.

“Barnsley seem to want it more” 🙁

  8. “Looking uncomfortable, with no plan in attack and nervous in defence.
We need to change it or it’s going to be a difficult night.”

I rest my case, I think.
    RDM out.

  9. Not watching game and interesting comments on here. If you look at the stats we are matching Barnsley in possession, shots, shots on target, corners.

    So much for stats then!

  10. Good run from Adomah, but he’s dragged down.
Commentator saying we need to play 10 yards further up and stop sitting back.
    Kodjia isolated again.

        1. i am in northwest…. reminds me of days watching ceefax and vidiprinter for the scores when i was younger. curse the day we got relegated
