Paul Lambert has been impressed by Ryan Bertrand’s recent performances for Aston Villa and is very likely to make an offer for the Chelsea left back this summer. Bertrand joined Aston Villa on loan for the remainder of the season and immediately went into the first team playing his first game against Liverpool. Since then, Bertrand has started in left-back every game. The only real loser has been Antonio Luna who hasn’t featured at all, and has even struggled to make the bench!
Still, do fans care? Absolutely not, Bertrand has been superb for Aston Villa and arguably Villa’s best left-back since Bouma. Bertrand has strengthened the defence and hasn’t been too bad when going forward. He has built a decent partnership with Fabian Delph with both players working well together.
But what impresses me the most about Bertrand is his positive attitude towards his move to Villa. In all his interviews he never moans, nor talks about getting back into the Chelsea team. He is totally focused on Aston Villa and wants the club to finish in the top 10. You could argue that he prefers his Villa teammates to his former Chelsea teammates!
A permanent move is definitely likely, Mourinho clearly doesn’t rate Bertrand and if Mourinho really want’s a better left-back than Azpilicueta, he’d most likely buy a new one. The rumoured price for Bertrand seems to be roughly £5 million. That may be a lot for a left-back, but he is a proven left-back with vital Premier League experience. Bertrand would offer stability on the left-side of defence for a number of seasons.
