Garde out, Yorke in? perhaps not.

God, you’re lucky.
Not only do you support the finest club in the world, but you get to read my thoughts two days running!

Ok, forget that; I’m just in a daft mood at this stupid time of the day, where I’m about to go to bed.

So I saw this article where Dwight Yorke says “sack Garde and appoint me”.

I thought it was just a re-hash of what he’d said a few months ago, but it seems he’s quoted as mentioning nine games to go, so it might be relevant.

So bearing in mind that it might be a bit of creative journalism and I’d never consider Yorke as a Villa manager just yet, there is a certain point that struck home with me;

“You need more than that, somebody who understands the football club, who gets more out of the players and Remi Garde hasn’t been able to do that. Every interview he’s done, there’s no positiveness coming out of it – at least show some fighting spirit with nine games to go.”

And Yorke does have a point doesn’t he, when you look at it like that?

Garde definitely seems to have been playing things down, although I can’t say I blame him, given our position and the fact that he’s been stitched up.

And yes, Garde has been trying to play things up, to a certain extent, if you want to look at it the other way.
He’s still being quoted as saying we can beat the Swans and stay up on the OS.
But his comments haven’t convinced anyone, have they? And we all know that you have to read underneath to see what he actually means.

This is pretty much a throwaway post, as I don’t think Yorke coming in with an upbeat mood would have changed much.
But perhaps you might think otherwise?

    Yorke?
I like his enthusiasm and that’s it.

He’d be hilarious. I always liked him, but he didn’t always come across as the sharpest tool in the shed…

    1. Lost my post in reply Bum bum, saying the same, players on the money train me thinks, good player in his day but team wise no. we only have 3 players with determination and he’d have to get past Lerner.

  3. We need someone with Championship experience, someone proven at that level who is young and ambitious and being a Villa fan would help.

    mmmm…wonder who that might be?

It’s a good call Pat but crossing the City can be a dangerous experience!

We have to be realistic as well because we are not going to like some of the names we will be linked with – McCarthy, Bruce et al who have good Championship records.

Is Moyes still available – I’ve lost track?

    2. Someone out of the City team?Pat57, because its getting more silly as we go on. I cannot say that theirs anyone that would take the job on with the owner we have, the club in untouchable to any descent manager.

  4. My money’s on little being next manager if remi gets pushed or steps down, as for Yorke don’t make me laff.

Warnock lads, 7 promotions ain’t too shabby at all. If we’re going for an immedaite bounceback, there’s noone better in the business. But are we too big for him?

Good point Claret & Blue, has turned things around at Rotheram in a short space of time. Beat Boro and Wednesday recently which is commendable.

Don’t think we can say a manager is too big for us these days after our six year fall from grace 🙁

It’s going to be interesting to see the direction the board does go in if Garde quits. Young manager who is untested with fresh ideas or your experienced older manager who is tried and trusted but sometimes uninspiring/predictable.

Due to the risk factor and the fact we need stability I’m more inclined to go for the latter at this moment in time.

  6. Yorke, admire his ballysness, but to be honest thats about all he cold offer,
there is a chance that could work but its slim, and then what?
we will be right back in it next season,
no we are going down lads, and its time to think about next year and the year after and hopefully look forward to some half way sensible direction from a board that some footballing nous at last

  7. I think this time round we have to go for Moyes.
I saw some of his everton teams totally batter us on several occasions.
3-1 at villa park comes to mind.
Has championship experience and will give the youth a chance.
In hindsight you could argue he did a better job than Van Gaal at Utd without the money.

Yorke was interviewed on Talksport yesterday, and to be fair he was very passionate about the club, maybe he could be brought in for some role but surely not manager. The two best young managers around for me would be Eddie Howe and Sean Dyche, don’t think we could get Howe to come but Dyche just might, would love him at the Villa. The job he’s doing at Burnley is incredible, but seems to have gone largely unnoticed.

    1. as a player.
He would still score more than Gabby(LEGEND my Arse)

Personally the club should stick with Garde, if they can. I’d rather the club give Garde time and build with the future in mind rather than chop and cut the squad to fit the needs of a ‘Championship’ manager.

Say we lose or sack Garde, pick up someone like Holloway, get promoted and then what? Sack him in a year, pay him off, purge the squad, and get Big Sam? No thank you.

I Agree with what Yorke said, but not him as manager, because i said before they appointed Garde he was not upto it and if you consider the following he has to go and should have gone after the liverpool game,
He has been in charge for 24 games now and won 2 if you look at the table if we had just 3 more wins out of those games we would be on the same points as the the other 3 teams in trouble, now i am not saying we would survive but at least we would have a chance. He has no motivational skills in my opinion as the whole squad has just laid down to die and so now nobody gives a toss, You will argue that he has nothing to work with and i agree to a point but remember this, this squad of players were winning 2 – 0 at leicester before TS cocked up the subs so surely with some motivation we could have won just 3 more games. And finally why not get rid now , its not working and give some one else a chance to be a hero and have some time to evaluate the squad for the summer clear out.

because he has a relegation clause in his contract.

we can’t bin him (without a pay off) until we are down.

the minute we are down he will be gone – ‘by mutual consent’

Beginning to agree that Garde is not the manager to get us out of
the Championship – the problem is he’s too intelligent for most of our squad to understand him.

We either need a big, rough, tough, kick arse manager with experience of the Championship – definitely a Warnock type or, failing that, we have to go for someone like Bruce with good experience in both divisions and not a bad track record.

For me though if the board want to make a statement of intent and show that they really are going to turn the club around then they should move heaven and earth to get Moyes – I think he would work well with Bernstein and Little and he is used to managing on a tight budget – I reckon most fans would support that move.

Great to hear Yorke’s passion for the club but too much of a risk – maybe assistant manager though?

  13. Think with Yorke he thinks he owes loyalty to the Villa because it was Ellis that had seen him playing on a beach and bought him over to Villa. as much as he was to Villa fans en idols to us fans, its out of what Villa did for him he’s concerned, We do need a proven manager and not one thats in for the fact hes desperate to get a job, but needs that job to further his CV in life. Lerner has to dig deap and get that right person.

    1. badger123 avatar
      badger123

Blimey Bill, have you fallen for Ellis’ bullshit on this one?

It was Graham Taylor who discovered Yorke.
But I do vaguely remember Ellis coming out with that sort of statement at one stage.
Just like he invented the bicycle kick. And actually played as a Pro.

“Yorke was first discovered by Graham Taylor, at the time the Aston Villa manager, on a tour of the West Indies in 1989. Yorke appeared in a team that played a friendly match against Aston Villa, Taylor was impressed and offered Yorke a trial at Villa.”

      1. Badger I can only repeat was was said to me by Ellis in the McGregor suite, you may possibly be right yes he was a Tobagan player at the time, but dont stop him seeing him on a beach kicking a ball around and taking the credit, that to me would be more plausible. But again not a manager for Villa .

Garde will prove to be a good manager given time. Unfortunately Garde, at this time, is not the man to take Aston Villa forward.

There are a few managers who IMO who know the championship and would get us out of it, providing they have total control of the football side of things. I would love to see Steve Bruce at the club. OK he managed Blues but he knows the division better than most and has gained promotion on a few occasions. Probably not everyone’s cup of tea but for me he is a solid choice.

Another decent choice IMO would be Mick Mccarthy. He seems to do well in the division without spending millions upon millions, something that would surely appeal to the board.

Tony Pullis who will no doubt be leaving Albion at the end of the season is another. Other names Nigel Pearson, Sean Dyche and even Neil Warnock all know the division too.

I’d happily take any of them but would prefer Bruce or McCarthy. Certainly capable of getting us up and building some rock solid foundations in which to build upon.

    1. badger123 avatar
      badger123

      Mick McCarthy?
      Good god, no!

I like the bloke, but his footy is awful and we’d probably be calling for Lambert to come back in no time.

The other names, I could live with, but Rowett would be a decent choice and probably ticks the most important box of being cheap to sack.

  15. I don’t know about a new manager I think we need a new squad.

  16. question will be, would any quality manager want the aston villa job rather than who we would like. thats if remi garde leaves being sacked or resigns. because our treatment off previous managers is scandalous.

particular remi’s who i bet, wasn’t sold the villa job in the interview with, you will have to make do with the worst squad in the league. no money will be made available for jan transfer window. also you won’t have any say in the players we recruit if we recruit.

managers we will hear want the job, will want assurances about money for players. will the club be able to match these demands. we all know the probable plan is to promote the youth around some season pros. managers which names are branded sofar will not buy into this.

i hope garde is given another crack without having the rug pulled from under him. if he doesn’t want to take the challenge on. then i want a manager like brendon rodgers or gus poyet.

I fully understand the reasons why so many do not see Garde as the long term answer, but to be honest if it was his team then good reason, but say he will not take us forward is premature. Give him a least season with the chance to build his own team in the next 2 windows and then judge him.

  18. We need to get Moyes in asap

  19. Brendan Rogers for what he did at Swansea, on the pitch and off it. Out of his depth at Liverpool but perfect for rebuilding a club from the bottom up, and playing some decent football.

  20. I don’t know if it means anything or not, but garde still has his French car, surely if you was going to be here for the long haul you would just buy a British one.

Any manager thinking of coming to VP next season will have one prior question to the board. “How many of the current squad have to be retained?” the answer they will hope to hear is “None, you can sack the lot.” However that is unlikely.

Really the difficulty of the job increases if most of the current players hang around. In that case only a kick-ass manager in the Pulis, Warnock and Alladyce mould will suffice.

However if the manager can start with a clean sheet that would also give Remi Garde a chance. I am not convinced by him – but I think it is about time the club stopped treating managers shabbily. If they will give a manager carte blanche then Remi should be offered it.

  22. Think Remi probably deserves a chance just based on how he’s handled this shit storm of a season with a bit of dignity.

The real question is does he want to stay? Lyon seem to want him back and so he has the opportunity to go back to France and draw a line under what must be a horrible time for him.

Still think Rowett is the best choice…if we could get him that is.

If the noses end up in the play off places (only 4 points off the pace) they might even wave to us as they pass us on the way up to the Prem.

Now that would just cap a truly awful season.

The board have one easy and two massive decisions to make which will determine the future if the club (I exclude removing Lerner from that equation
    🙂 )

    1 – sack Riley – no brainer
2 – appoint the right manager and give him funds and support to do a proper job
3 appoint a top class and football experienced CEO

Last two easy to say ………

  24. totally agree H60

whoever the manager for next season is, they will have to remove players that have grown roots, some players are too comfy, giving the odd decent performance every blue moon. lacking quality in every department and effort too

list of these players is endless. what worries me if gardes leaves, new manager will not have been let down by these players and give some clean slates. i don’t like pointing fingers at wastes of spaces. but Gil is a massive under achiever. never creates chances and never really scores enough to be a creative player.

today game at swansea, would be winnable if players gave 100% effort and played like lions leaving nothing on the pitch. our player are damaged goods, faulty at best.

Just read Hollis statement on OS. Says all the right things but the proof of the pudding!

He’s right though the fans have to support what he is trying to do and give it time to work. The other interesting point he implies is what all the fans have being saying for some time – the club was primarily being run on a financial not a football model and his statement suggests that is about to change.

    We will see.
