Villa – Arsenal; A bridge too far?

I’ve said previously that I thought we’d be able to beat Palace, Everton and West Ham.
I’ve also said that this is a game that I don’t think we can win. I’m sorry to say I still think that applies.

It’s typical of Villa’s luck, that Arsenal, who have been reasonably mediocre by their standards have now gone on a bit of a roll and are in very good form.
It doesn’t help that they’re still very much in the running to qualify for the Europa league, although this might have been pushed to the back of the players’ minds now that they’ve qualified for the FA cup final.
You’d expect that any of their players picked will be playing for a place at Wembley, so I’m certainly not expecting them to give us an easy time of it.

Still, I’m not exactly the world’s best at predicting games and there’s every chance I’m wrong.
It’s not like Arsenal are unbeatable by any means and they have actually lost 9 of the 36 games they’ve played this season.

And then I’m struggling for positives. Clutching at straws, if you like.
Because I just don’t think we have a hope in hell of beating Arsenal, not in a month of sundays.
Where is the goal, let alone goals going to come from?
And who is going to step up and have a blinder at the back, saving the day from what will probably be a fair old onslaught?
There isn’t anyone, is there?

Even Jack Grealish, our one man team, doesn’t seem to be able to produce anything of note lately.
Dean Smith rightly pointed out that he’s due a goal though and it would be great if he could get one to pinch the points in what will possibly be his last game at Villa Park as a Villa player.

We’ll know the Watford score before we kick off, but I think it really won’t matter too much.
We’ve probably done pretty well to drag it out this far, but I think today we’ll see our number is up.

  1. Not for me it not, Reina 3 goal kicks all go out of play. Goal villa

  2. Job 1/2 done, you can see players thinking now on the pitch, closing down ,quick footwork, they look,a lot better now go out a get that win ..

  3. good controlled football by villa. we have got good balance too which has not happened much this seaosn. we are normally to defensive or to open (attacking ) but tonight. we have got things right sofar,

arsenal i have seen last two and they are not playing to the same intensity, not saying they are not playing, just that they thought they only had to turn up attitude and they have been caught out.

second half we have got to continue with the way we are. no good going too defensive holding on to a lead etc. try to get the second but do not give arsenal a helping hand to get into the game. they look like a team have bigger fish to fry and we need to keep them disinterested

mcginn and grealish are linking up like the old days. mings and konsa look solid. samatta working hard up front. not too forget trezeguet finish was outstanding tekkers

  4. This 2nd half is going to be hard on the heart, no more nails left either..please!!!

  5. Been watching Samata, he’s holding back on lots of tackles, think we need to bring on Davis. ..

  6. Davis, fuck’s sake.
Sums him up all over, I’m afraid.
    Just doesn’t have that instinct.
    Shame.

  7. I take back all I said, that was pure effort from the lads, now I think we can stay up . Well done Villa .

  8. Fair play to Smith – made two or three tactical adjustments during the game. In our own hands now but would rather be where we are than chasing the game.

Last game of the season for our first clean sheet away from home?

Not over yet but the fat lady is not on call ……….yet.

    UTV

  9. Every now and again life throughs a curve ball. I didn’t expect it but you beauties Villa boys. If you give that effort on Sunday we will have undertaken the great escape and Steve McQueen will be applauding is!

  10. i thought we played well i really did. even thou arsenal were below par we still had to be professional about the game. i thought we were rarely troubled and should have increased our lead,

got to keep on top of the situation, we are not safe its still up for grabs. keep our feet on the ground. but we are in a much stronger position with our win and man city 4 nil win which eroded watfords advantage of GD.

  11. Not good for my nerves! I’m delighted to have called it wrong. We showed character and discipline for 94 minutes. Their header against the post I thought at first view was a goal, so relieved when Reina eventually smothered it. I never imagined for one minute that our premier league safety would be in our own hands, so please let’s pray we don’t blow it.
